We love ordering take out from Kim's! Everything is freshly prepared and has great flavor. We typically use the phone and dial in old school but I am fairly confident online orders are also accepted. Some of our favorites include the chicken lo mein, cream cheese wontons, egg rolls and sweet and sour chicken. Tried Kim's for the first time. We ordered veggie lo lein, Kung Pao tofu, mushroom fried rice, cream cheese wontons, and veggie egg rolls. Start with the good. Friendly staff and quick service. The lo mein was delicious. I like the skinnier noodles they use. I added some hot oil at home and SO GOOD. Wontons we're also very good. Now for the mediocre. The fried rice was just ok. Had a bit of a different flavor than some other places. Also had water chestnuts which I'm not a fan of, but they were big enough to pick out. The egg rolls were a bit dry. Definitely had to use sauce with them. The Kung Pao sauce was good but the tofu was a too soft for me. I wish it was crispier. I might order from here again and try a shrimp dish but I'm in no rush. read more

A little overpriced, food was just OK. We got the sesame chicken, cream cheese rolls and lo mien. Rice was very dry and crunchy, and not quite sure what it was but the sesame chicken sauce was strangely lemon-y. Was just ok, but overpriced in my opinion currently. Stopped in for some much raved about wings and egg rolls. While the wings were okay they were quite small had barely any meat on them and were basically all batter. I like wings that are plump and have some meat in them. These were really lacking much meat. Egg rolls were good, but not the best I've ever had. I wish I would have saved pictures of the food but it was spot on. Came in to hang out during a school bus trip and stopped by this little Chinese spot because it was the one food option next to where I parked. Got the curry chicken with fried rice, pot stickers and egg drop soup and it was nothing short of phenomenal. Generous portions with well seasoned and cooked food. I expected the tray to be one part rice and other part chicken but it was all chicken and the rice was in a separate container. It was some of the best Chinese food I have had in a while. I love old-school Americanized Chinese restaurants, especially those in the Midwest. Kim's Chow Mein is like a time capsule and serves a rapidly vanishing style of cooking. It's not spectacular, and the leftovers don't hold up well, but it's perfectly respectable (hence the 3 stars, which is not a bad review in my book). Located in a turn of the century building in St. Paul, it's neighborhood-centric and perfect with thick blue carpet and office ceiling tiles (I know, that sounds dated and weird, but I love it; it reminds me of my childhood). The vegetable egg rolls ($5.25) are great here: a layered wrapper with a nice filling. Not oily, not dry, not mushy. Just perfect and nicely crisp. The kung po tofu ($11) doesn't have a ton of flavor, but is fine (I got mine without celery). The tofu is destroyed, though, and slippery/soft/soggy in the liquidy sauce. The curry tofu ($11) is better with a fragrant sauce, but has a similarly watery/liquid sauce. That said, it's flavorful and better than the gloopy, cornstarch-laden sauces at other Chinese spots. Lastly, I liked the freshness and lightness of the vegetable lo mein ($10.50). Stop by Kim's Chow Mein for solid Americanized Chinese food. Hunan Restaurant in Bloomington and Yangtze in St. Louis Park are even better. read more

This is a solid option, and is virtually the only Chinese place within the neighborhood. Which I imagine gives them huge leverage. The restaurant doesn't abuse this privilege, however. It has solid potions and a very reasonable menu. That said, as a transplant, the selection skews a bit outside my go to favorites, and I think they could be a little bit more adventurous in their offerings. But that's mostly a matter of personal taste. I think those accustomed to midwestern Chinese American fair will find this a great option. read more

As this was my first time here I was pleased the egg foo yong was very tasty although they were a little stingy with the shrimp I promise you it was about three shrimp per patty... I like the ones were there's shrimp in every bite! other than that we had beef fried rice I've had better when the beef is too chewy,i think I'm eating something else and I can't enjoy it! We also had beef and broccoli again the beef I could've did without. Unlike some other MN establishments, Kim's cuisine has resisted Americanizing their Chinese food. Their craft is basically perfect for a non Dine In experience during the pandemic. I ordered a chicken fried rice and opted for the large option. While the large option was humongous and could've stuffed Shaquille O'Neal, it was extremely delicious and affordable. This was truly the worst Chinese food I have ever eaten. We got two chicken dishes, and the chicken in both was SO dry and stringy that we couldn't eat it and threw it away. Also, the sauce tasted like watered-down ketchup. I have eaten at MANY Chinese restaurants in several different states, and I've never thrown the food away. I recommend calling ahead - long wait for to go orders but also it's a friday night. they were very efficient though and the food was HOT which was great! Orders were also correct which seems expected but youd be surprised. On our way back from the International Film Festival, my friends and I decided that we should grab something to eat before we returned home and went to our meetings, respectively. It was 8:05pm and Kim's working hours read that it closed at 8:00pm; however, a working student who is familiar with us let us in and we were able to order something to go. Apparently, if the door is not locked and the sign is still lit then there is a chance that you can still order food for take-out. For $12 I was able to special order broccoli and pea pods with garlic sauce and 6 cream cheese wontons. A small steamed rice and two fortune cookies came complimentary. This lasted me for two days and was decent for being a quick take-out meal. Considering how easily you can rack up $12 for a less satisfying meal at my school, I was pleased with what I got. I got the Beef Lo Mein and I was very pleased with it. It was simple, but delicious. Noodles were not dry, veggies were cookies perfectly and the beef was tender and not fatty. This place is a location restaurant. Don't come here for the food. If you do the only thing that I have found to be at all good on the menu is the Fried Rice. Don't order anything else if you have developed your palette at all as everything else will disappoint. They could do a lot better. The market is there. look at the blue door... crowded every day of the week... while this place has 1 or 2 people who don't work there sitting inside. Hire people that speak at least some English... which is funny is because in my opinion the only people that would like this place's Chinese food are ignorant people who have never tried another Chinese place... and actually believe American Chinese food is accurate representation of food from China and Hong Kong. . . They love it because it's "exotic" lol. . . Just like Leann chin's - that's an inside joke for all the Chinese Buffet buffs out there. The fried rice isn't bad though... just nothing else. read more

I discovered Kim's in 2008 with some friends. It's right near St. Thomas and is in walking distance which was great as a freshman with no car. Kim's is a small very casual establishment with pretty typical food offerings. The very top reason I continue to go back to Kim's is there AMAZING, and I'll say it again, AMAZING egg drop soup. The best egg drop soup in the twin cities, hands-down. It's fresh, not overly oily and has chives, peas, and carrots in it. I typically get a bowl of egg drop a side of white rice to eat with the soup, and a split order of cream cheese wontons with whoever I'm dining with. The other great thing about Kim's is the service. They are so friendly and accommodating and know me pretty well by now. In fact, they almost always know what I'm going to order! I have tried the lo mein and fried rice before, which are both decent, nothing overly special, but not bad. Overall, I love Kim's for the atmosphere and the great soup. It's a great, inexpensive, quick meal when you aren't looking for anything fancy. read more

This is probably the most inconsistent restaurant I have ever been to. When ordering from Kim's I always worry whether they will get it right. On multiple occasions I've had to make 2 trips to pick up food they forgot. And the last time I visited Kim's was to get my money back from an order that was just butchered. The food was cold and inedible. They use some funky chicken, beef, and pork. Sometimes I couldn't even identify the meat by look or taste. Their food is extremely greasy with so much salt! This applies to their entire menu. Also, I'm not up to date on child labor laws, but I have seen on separate occasions, what looked like an adolescent cooking in the kitchen. Now with all that being said, Kim's is very cheap and pretty good when you eat it after a long Friday night out. But of course anything would be good at that time. read more

Nothing to get excited about, trust me. I had the Shrimp Lo Mein here, and boy, was it mediocre. This is very typical Chinese food, like 90% of Chinese restaurants in the Twin Cities. To it's merit, the portions are gigantic! You could get two filling meals out of one order. Even though this is true, I'd rather have one meal worth of good Chinese food than two meals of average Chinese food. The weird thing is, there are quite a few people I know that make a ritual of coming here when they are in town. I don't know what for... They always get the Chow Mein, which I haven't had, because frankly, I don't like Chow Mein. I guess if you're a big Chow Mein fan, it may be worth a try. I will admit the Twin Cities has astronomically good Korean food. I've not been let down yet. However, i come from a place that has astronomically good (and simultaneously cheap) Chinese food. Since moving here I've been struggling to find a similar place locally. Occasionally Hotdish, Tapas and I want to spend a Friday night in with Chinese take out and movies. The first three tries were abysmal. Barely edible. These places made the old, bad joke "Chinese food is really dog" believable. On a trip to Izzy's to wash the taste of horrid, old grease fried egg roll out of our mouths, i noticed Kim's. We gave it a try on out next Take Out Friday. Kim's is not bad. I may be damning it with faint praise to say it was the best out of four, but it's definitely edible and fairly tasty. It's not Queens Chinese by a long stretch, but comparatively speaking it'll do until i find something better. They have odd things on the menu like fried chicken and french fries, but the usual suspects are present, with the exception of hot'n'sour soup, which is disappointing. Tapas loves the mini fried sugar donuts, which is pretty state-fair-y, but not a bad addition. They keep the kid happy and are cheaper than Izzy's next door. So. Kim's is just fine.
