Tucked away on 29th street between 7th and 8th avenues, Kilogram is a new quiet spot attached to a residential building that brings great coffee and baked goods to an otherwise nondescript block. With beans from local, small- batch Brooklyn roaster BKG Coffee, their 100% Arabica coffee beans taste great as an espresso alone or in milk drinks such as lattes or cortados. The barista was super helpful, service was quick, and the ambience is very intimate and relaxed with lots of seating for twos. They're aiming to get a beer and wine license as well. I'm looking forward to coming back as their menu continues to expand.

Where Ninth St Espresso once lived comes Kilogram a snazzy coffee joint using Brooklyn coffee and tea. It's new pseudo tropical design feels welcoming. With new hotels opening on the block hopefully Kilogram lasts a long time. Bought Brooklyn beans to go- $16

Great, new hidden gem in midtown, and I selfishly hope it stays that way, but I know it won't! The coffee is excellent; I got a hot latte with honey and regular milk (no soy or 2%) and the price was fair, too. The service was so nice; the guy manning the counter was friendly when I was ordering and was cool with me staying there for hours, even though he did not have to be! The ambiance is elegant and modern, but cozy and welcoming. They've managed to put in as many seats as possible in the space, with lots of outlets and strong WiFi, as well. The owner and manager were there separately, and they both chatted it up with me. There's a bathroom down the hall, too. Oh and they're getting their liquor license, so it looks to be a buzzing place in the evenings soon. Overall, excellent new addition to the area and I hope they thrive!

Beautifully decorated small cafe near Penn Station. The interior designer really did a great job. The finishes make you feel like you entered another decade. The food and coffee itself isn't great. It might be because of the milk they used but my iced vanilla oat milk latte was borderline good. The vanilla flavoring is the same standard flavoring Starbucks or other non-speciality cafes use. There is no depth to the vanilla and it tastes artificial. The oat milk they use is too watery and not rich enough to complement the taste of the espresso. As for the dessert, the chocolate chip cookie is very soft but is slightly strange in chew. Also, it is very sweet for a cookie (which may work for others but does not work for me). There are some window seats as well as some seats with tables in the back but I'm not sure if there are restrooms as it shares the entrance with a hotel/apartment.

Great coffee shop! Super clean, AC, plenty of seating, and outlets!! The espresso was delicious, smooth. Great place to do work or take a meeting. Seats comfy!

The sepia reflections of five or so office workers streak across the dark storefront window. One streak solidifies into a woman as the rest move on. Her fingers comb strands of frail black hair out of her eyes as she squints into the window. There is just enough light outside still that the glass is opaque and she can only see her vague silhouette between heavy green curtains. Her blue dress flutters against her calves as a boy on a skateboard skids past. She glances down at the gold-embossed sign, 'Kilogram café,' and thinks, good enough. She just needs a place to sit and wait. She opens the door as someone pushes a heavy garment rack over the pavement behind her. The noisy clanking diminishes as soon as the door closes, the worker and his cargo off to some anonymous fabric-strewn factory in the garment district. She does a double take once she is inside. Green and brown dot her view and she wonders if she stepped inside a Starbucks by accident. But there are no rickety tables, plastic green straws, or espresso machines screeching over loud conversation. She likes how small and quiet the café is instead, how the barista's bar extends across the middle of the room like an arm shielding the tables behind it, how the green of the tables and seats is a deep unabashed emerald, glowing under the yellow lights. Beveled glasses and green teacups glisten on the shelves. She lowers her backpack, holding the top handle with two hands. She presses her lips into a line as she considers the dark purple night ahead of her, imagines sitting across from her daughter in one hour, who will have taken the train here three hours just to see her. Her daughter will complain that she needs to stop drinking coffee, especially so late, because of some paranoid ideas she has about caffeine. But she needs this. Her head pulses. She feels the lines in her face deepen, her hair grow frizzier. It's fine if the night ends with her sleepless again. She wants to enjoy dinner with her daughter. After getting her coffee from one of the two workers behind the bar, she takes a spot on the green bench in the back of the room. She lifts the gold handle of the cup and puts it to her cheek until her skin blushes under the heat. It smells pleasantly chocolatey and bitter. There are half circles under her eyes. The truth is that she hadn't slept last night again. She lays back against the bench. It is quiet, the air unbroken by the jazz playing from the speakers. There are two other customers, one sitting by the counter in front of the window reading a book, the other one two tables away from her, typing steadfastly into their computer. She texts her daughter where she is and puts her phone down. She worries about how soft her daughter is, more strait-laced and afraid than she had ever been. She wishes that her daughter had stayed in the city, not just to be near her, but also so that she could remain close to the world instead of hidden in a house in a silent sunny neighborhood. She knows that she had accidentally helped mold her daughter this way. When her daughter was born, she was so stunned by the life in her hands and loved her fragility so dearly that she worried, uncharacteristically, for her until she saw her anxious face reflected in her daughter's. By then, it was too late. As she stares at the black lines slicing through the green and gold marble pattern of the table in front of her, she tells herself that she doesn't know her daughter and never will. Her daughter might not be as soft as she sees her to be. Her heart hurts anyway. It's aggravating. She thinks she's too old for her heart to break over her daughter, but it's only on the rare days of the year when she sees her that these thoughts roil inside of her. She decides to watch a video for the next hour and rests her temple on her palm. Her eyes close. In her dream, she is ladling soup out of a large bowl at the center of a green table and pushes it over to her daughter. Her daughter's face is a blur. She squints. Then her daughter is on her lap. She is a small child. Her hair is in a fluffy braid that smells strongly of oriental medicine. The scent is so incongruous that she wakes up. As she opens her eyes, she realizes it is the scent of the shampoo that she grew up with. Her daughter had never used it. She becomes aware of where she is. She is nestled like a regular in a soft crevice of the café she has never visited before. She lets her frizzy hair fall over her face. Her lips are slightly open, the lines around her mouth less prominent. She checks the time on her phone. After finishing the last sips of coffee in her cup, cool enough now to bite the tip of her tongue with unpleasant bitterness, she stands and leaves. She appears ready for whatever the night holds.

I was at this quaint tea shop east of Koreatown earlier in the evening before going to a meal at the excellent new Thai place, Wanglang. The staff was very friendly, and they specialize in matcha, along with having hojicha, genmaicha, black tea, and sencha. Along with more traditional drinks, they also have fruit options as well as black sugar jelly (I presume kuromitsu) and a Japanese citrus that's not seen much here, hyuganatsu. Along with the citrus, this place is rather unique as they had three different matcha options in terms of variety. As I tend to prefer teas pure and without add-ons, I ordered the Matcha Americano, which is simply matcha and water. I went with the 12-oz version for $6 + tax and ordered the Hajime, though I would likely get the Fuku No Midori next time based on descriptions online. The matcha was solid and had a mild sweetness and a light earthiness. However, it lacked some of the mouth coating found in very high-quality drinks from Sorate or Setsugekka, while being similar in price. Still, that is comparing to some of the best, and this was still very tasty and a lot better than 90% of the places in the city, being more comparable to Kettl. I wouldn't mind going back and ordering the other matcha varietal to see whether that is a better comparison. Outside of this, I enjoyed my drink, and the staff was friendly. I hope they do well.

The space is extremely compact, functioning more like a takeout counter than a café, with only minimal room inside. The main focus here is matcha, with a distinctive approach that lets you choose between three blends: Hinata, which leans creamy and nutty; Hajime, which is more smoky and earthy; and a more traditional-style matcha profile. Drinks like the mango matcha show how they play with these bases, though fruit purées can sometimes overshadow the matcha depending on the combination. They also offer matcha powder for home use and occasional fresh pastries that add a warm, baked aroma to the space. Service is one of the strongest parts of the experience. The staff is consistently warm, attentive, and willing to explain the differences between blends in detail. The atmosphere is cozy but extremely tight, built for short visits rather than lingering. It is not a workspace or hangout café, but more of a quick stop that stands out because of its hospitality and focus on craft. Even in a busy area, it leaves a memorable impression through its matcha quality and genuinely personable service.

And I commonly see the upstairs for private events like baby showers, bridal showers, or birthday parties on social media. After dinner with my friends, I was looking for dessert and I was glad to see this location closes relatively late on a weekday night at 11 pm. Upon walking in, I was greeted by a waiter who led us to one of the purple velvet chair booths that was perfect for two people and another waiter brought us a pitcher of water almost immediately. The menu is on a QR code already on the table and we were given ample of time to decide. My friend and I both already knew what we wanted to order. I got the purple Yam Souffle which takes 25 minutes to make and my friend got the fried squid tails. We also got a signature Rose Green Milk Tea to share. The waitress who took our order has great memory and recalled all of our items without writing it down. She also reminded me that I could adjust the ice and sugar levels of my drink which I had completely forgotten and would have got annoyed if my drink came out 100% sweetness. Another thing is that my drink order frequently comes out wrong at other locations so I was glad she got it right! Green tea instead of black tea and with milk instead of without milk. The purple Yam Souffle is just like the other locations. Hot, soft cakey texture balanced with an ice cold red bean Ice-Cream. So delicious! The squid tails on the other hand was not what we expected. It came out burnt and hard. The outer batter was not crispy either. We informed one of the waiters and he brought it back to inform the kitchen staff. We received a new batch that was not as burnt and had more flavoring this time around. However, the squid was still hard and not like the ones we get from other locations with smaller crispier pieces. Overall, it was still a good experience and I love the decorations at this location! This might be my second favorite location after the Flushing one. Would love to come back for brunch or hi-tea. Or regular food options when I have not already eaten dinner. My usual go-tos are the twister fries, Santa Fe chicken rolls, fried salted crispy chicken, and the trio dessert combo. However, this location has a lot more variety! FYI - there are two unisex restrooms in the rear for customers to use with really cute wallpapers too.

We ordered potted rose milk tea to share, Dubai affogato and Brown Sugar Boba Mille Crêpes Cake. We came on a Friday around 4pm. Originally I wanted to try the strawberry matchamisu, however, was told that it sold out. What a bummer. The rose milk tea came with a themed pot and cups which is really cute. The rose fragrant smelled so good and the milk tea also tasted good and has a hint of rose taste. The cake was good, the boba was well cooked, chewy and flavorful! This time there was an unpleasant experience. At first when the Dubai affogato was served, we did not realize that the amount of the coffee was little until we saw another customer's dish that the volume of their coffee looked significantly more than ours. My friend brought it to the waitress attention but the waitress brushed it off and did not acknowledge our concern. When we finished and were about to leave, the same waitress came over and showed us that the container of the coffee was different and hence the volume of the coffee looked different. At this point, we did not care for it anymore. We would have been fine if the staff acknowledged our concern. We thought that maybe using standardized containers for the coffee would avoid this problem. Other than that, the food and drinks were good.
