I had Seoul Sweets bookmarked for a while. I'm in KTown a lot for dinner - it's close to the Path and Penn Station, so it's a great meet up spot - so I'm always on the lookout for dessert spots. It's a really big space - there's a lot of seating both downstairs and upstairs. The pastries are a little bit pricey. I tried the mango cake and also the black sesame rice cake. The rice cake was good, but the sporks they give you are completely useless against the rice cakes. The mango cake was about the blandest cake I've ever had in my life. One good thing is that, at least on the upper level, they do not rush you out whatsoever. You can literally stay for as long as you want. read more

I don't understand all the good reviews for this place??? I had the worst experience here. First of all- confusing checkout process. I was told the tea set is for dine in service only so when checking out, I paid a 20% tip but then I find out there is NO service & everything is self serve (pick up at the counter and also bus your dishes yourselves). Secondly, how is this $40? Definitely not worth it. The tea is much too mild, the strawberry cake was disgusting and really hard (and the fruit didn't taste fresh...). I liked the Yakgwa and that was the only thing I liked. And then the most important issue I had was the lack of sanitation. The dishes and cups were dirty. There was lint, hair, dirt in the cups and the teapot. I don't understand why they didn't wash them. I complained and got a partial refund at least. But they also made an excuse about why the ceramics were dirty and apparently the only way to guarantee cleanliness is to use a disposable plastic cup. The place is pretty but that's it. Also there was a guy sitting across from us who complained that he wasn't given the espresso that came with his tiramisu. He asked and they forgot and he had to buy another one, so they didn't even comp him for their mistake. After dinner in Ktown, we stopped by here for some dessert. The space is clean, minimal, and spacious. All of the sets and dessert are also so aesthetic, but definitely pricey. We decided to get the Da-On Sang Set ($26) and Injeolmi Bingsoo ($21). Everything came out so quick --it was ready within a minute after we ordered. To start off, the bingsoo was super soft and silky. We really liked this one, especially the muted and nutty soy bean flavor of the injeolmi. As for the da-on set, I really didn't care for this one at all besides how cute it is. Everything was too sweet that we didn't finish any of these small bites unfortunately. It was also kind of tough to cut and share, especially with the wooden knives we were given. I'd mainly come here for the bingsoo. It's also a nice spot to get some work done or hang out. read more

Cute dessert selection. The matcha mochi has fresh and juicy strawberry in the middle. It's definitely an upgrade from a regular mochi. I love the Dubai cookie. The pistachio filling has good amounts of kanafee, wrapped in mochi . So crunchy. To go container is quite sturdy to protect delicate pastries. The guy at the counter is very quiet and stoic. We really liked this place!! I came here with my partner for a quick coffee in the morning and the interior is beautiful. We came early enough that the restaurant was quiet and calm with music playing in the background. Service was quick too and they dont rush anyone to leave. Nice spacious atmosphere and unique desert. We went after dinner on a Saturday evening after 9pm and it was still very crowded. Choices of deserts were limited as they had sold out of a lot of their items. We had the strawberry mochi, the Joo Ak (fried rice donut) and a vanilla latte. Everything was tasty. Mochi and Joo Ak were both chewy, nice texture, not too sweet. I would have loved to try some of their other items. I did think some of their "sets" and mini cakes were priced a little on the high side. There is seating available upstairs. Korean cafes here in New York's K-town are a nice spot to relax, get some work done, or meet up with some friends for a causal hangout. Seoul Sweets is the epitome of that and now a go-to when I'm in the area. The decor felt sophisticated in both of its levels. The bottom floor gave a busy cafe feel where there were individual tables to hunker down and do work, while upstairs is more brightly lit and made for get-togethers. You order everything from the machine when you first enter. Once your order is placed, head inside on the first floor for them to prepare the actual items. During my first visit, I ordered a lemonade to sip and tried their Strawberry Daifuku with red bean. On my second visit, I ordered a Strawberry Matcha Latte with non-dairy milk, and sipped on that for hours upstairs while doing some work on their good Wi-Fi connection. One recommendation I have for them is to have a nutrition/ingredients menu available or to mark items on what it may contain allergen wise. The staff misinformed me about a few items that I'm sure weren't actually vegan but I didn't let that bother me too much. Passing by this place as we headed for our dinner reservation, we decided we definitely wanted to try desserts here instead of at the restaurant where we were headed, and we were so glad we did. After dinner, we came back feeling a bit too full, so we shared the matcha bingsoo. It was incredible because it was light and not overwhelming, with no extra things like mochi and tapinaki. This had light shaved "snow" with matcha ice cream, topped with matcha powder and syrup. It was not overly sweet, thankfully, and it was the perfect way to conclude the night. They have three types of bingsoos: matcha, mango, and strawberry. There are two kiosks by the entrance that we used to see what the different bingsoo would look like. You can place your entire order at the kiosk if it makes it easier for you, but I definitely urge you to go in and see their entire dessert offerings. Their dessert display is quite extensive, and all the desserts looked quite pretty. Being so late, we chose not to have coffee, but they offered complimentary herb-flavored water on the side by the cashier. The aesthetic is serene and modern. There's fun music playing in the background, but we were still able to hold a conversation without resorting to shouting. There were signs displayed on the wall requesting us to leave the dishes on the table after eating, and the staff quickly came over to take the dishes and cups away and clean the table and seats. The service was quick, and the servers are very friendly and helpful should you have any questions. I like the concept of this place, but was very disappointed by the food. Desserts seem more pretty versus actually tasting good or even seeming fresh. Came on a weekend afternoon and there was no line, but lots of people seated. Seems to be a popular place to study, read, just hangout, etc. Quite large with an upstairs and has a nice ambiance. Unfortunately I found the desserts to be a disappointment. Everything lacked flavor and it didn't taste fresh - textures even felt off for some of them (overly dry or really hard). I ordered one of the dessert sets that comes with multiple things (see photo). It's a good price, but again, nothing tasted fresh so I only took a bite out of each. I love it here. The Koreans take cafe culture so seriously and I am so happy to see it in NYC. I've seen cafes with a waterfall in Seoul. Just stunning. The decor is so lovely. We ordered to share: 1) oreo petite cake, 2) gaesung joo-ak, 3) gaesung yak gwa, 4) black sesame einspanner drink. Oreo petite cake - It was very delicious & interesting. The top oreo part was crunchy, soft, creamy & had the right amount of sweetness. The bottom part was the rice cake & it gave it a nice chewy texture. Gaesung joo-ak - This reminded me of a small petite chewy donut that kind of tasted like a yak gwa. It was delicious. Gaesung yak gwa - I like this one more than the gaesung joo-ak as this one was more crunchy and flakey. I tasted yuzu/citron on it & I loooove yuzu/citron so much! Black sesame einspanner drink - Loved the drink! It was very flavorful, not too sweet & you really taste the creaminess and the sesame taste in it. Portion sizes were small like how they do it in Asia, but they were all very flavorful. Excellent desserts! I am not familiar with Korean desserts so this was going to be a surprise. The mochi square was chewy but had no distinct flavor but the cream and strawberry were familiar. Korean and Japanese desserts tend to be rather insipid like they fear a pungent flavor. The Einspanner had a lot of foamy cream but the one at 10000 coffee is far superior in taste.
