Note: Rating is for the area and price per quality. In terms of flavor/complexity, I'd put it at a similar level as Kettl, but below Sorate and Setsugekka. I was at this quaint tea shop east of Koreatown earlier in the evening before going to a meal at the excellent new Thai place, Wanglang. The staff was very friendly, and they specialize in matcha, along with having hojicha, genmaicha, black tea, and sencha. Along with more traditional drinks, they also have fruit options as well as black sugar jelly (I presume kuromitsu) and a Japanese citrus that's not seen much here, hyuganatsu. Along with the citrus, this place is rather unique as they had three different matcha options in terms of variety. As I tend to prefer teas pure and without add-ons, I ordered the Matcha Americano, which is simply matcha and water. I went with the 12-oz version for $6 + tax and ordered the Hajime, though I would likely get the Fuku No Midori next time based on descriptions online. The matcha was solid and had a mild sweetness and a light earthiness. However, it lacked some of the mouth coating found in very high-quality drinks from Sorate or Setsugekka, while being similar in price. Still, that is comparing to some of the best, and this was still very tasty and a lot better than 90% of the places in the city, being more comparable to Kettl. I wouldn't mind going back and ordering the other matcha varietal to see whether that is a better comparison. Outside of this, I enjoyed my drink, and the staff was friendly. I hope they do well. read more

The entrance to their door is inconveniently heavy, alongside their spot being very tiny. The service was fine, they helped me order as I wasn't sure what to order. Their matcha however was very grainy, though they did whisk it, it definitely needed more effort and attention. read more

The matcha here is sooo delicious and even though I ordered the strawberry matcha with the hinata blend matcha, the matcha shone through the strawberry, which is my favorite type of strawberry matcha drink. It was well balanced and the store was very cute with different matcha accessories you could purchase. I'll absolutely be recommending this place. read more

One of the best matchas I've ever had! I went with the earthy matcha and chose the black sugar jelly flavors It had similar taste to boba but more of a jello-like consistency. Next time, I'll probably get the strawberry instead which my friend had and was AMAZING! The matcha itself was incredible and the small team working in there were very friendly and helpful when ordering. Will be adding this to my itinerary again the next time I'm in NYC. read more

Updating my review - I work nearby and come here three to four times a week at this point. It's become part of my routine and honestly a must. I get my custom half matcha, half strawberry order, and the staff is always so accommodating about it. Everyone is genuinely so sweet, Mika is incredible. The matcha is a 10/10. So good. I'm just really grateful this place exists near my office because it makes my week better every time. read more

I wished the black sugar jelly were smaller. So I can enjoy it with my drink. It said all the jelly got stuck at the end. Don't get me wrong the jelly was good just preferred it smaller. I didn't get to try the matcha but I like how they give you option what kind of matcha you prefer with your drink read more

Service was super quick and the staff was very friendly. The spot is small and cute, no place to sit. When it comes to the matcha, it was definitely tasty. The flavors tasted like they came from the fruits and not artificial flavoring. Despite no additional sweeteners, the strawberry and mango matchas were on the sweeter side. Got it with almond milk (+$0.75). While I could get some matcha taste, I would've still preferred a stronger matcha taste with a hint of the flavor. Very cramped store - uncomfortable to wait inside with other people. Looks a little chaotic behind the counter when there are a lot of orders and people waiting. However the matcha tasted great and I loved the (Midori?) I believe. My friend however tried their smoky matcha (I forget the name) and didn't like their drink at all. Service was friendly and they were pretty fast with making our drinks. Liked that they weighed our matcha and sifted/did everything properly right in front of us. Both the unsweetened matcha latte with whole milk and the mango matcha latte with whole milk were delicious. When ordering, you can choose between three different matchas and customize your milk. This is my go-to spot for matcha when at the office. It's a small, almost hidden shop. I love their matcha latte, very well balanced and you can tell that they use a high quality product. this place serves high quality fantastic matcha with great variety in flavors. I got the mango matcha latte which was absolutely delicious. The mango puree was fresh and carried just the right amount of sweetness to where the flavor of the matcha still came through but was balanced. Staff is also so sweet! I came here on a Thursday afternoon and ordered a strawberry matcha latte. The service was pretty fast and despite there being a line I got my drink within a 10min wait. The shop itself is tiny so it's definitely not a sit and study kind of spot. I liked that they had different matcha powders to choose from. I do think that with my drink the strawberry puree overshadowed the matcha but not certain if I just chose the wrong blend to go with. Authentic matcha in NY's Koreatown! I ordered the strawberry matcha and thought the flavor was pretty solid - I wish the matcha shined through a bit more, but it's possible that the strawberry puree overshadowed the flavor. In terms of price, the matcha lattes do run pretty steep (I believe it was over $9 total with oat milk) so just be prepared for that. Overall, a cute grab and go spot to pick up a matcha latte if you're okay paying a bit more. If I were to return in the future, I'd definitely want to try their matcha cookie! read more

Heard a lot about this matcha spot so I was excited to finally make it out here! The shop is pretty small and would recommend for a grab and go vibe, but it's cute and they have a small selection of Japanese goods to shop from. Service was friendly and pretty efficient! I got a strawberry hojicha and a mango matcha - both were a great, fruity flavour and nice tea quality. Personally giving bonus points for the ability to make a hojicha fruity, which I haven't seen too much of. As others have said, these drinks are a bit on the expensive side (over $9 for each for the smallest size with oat milk), but I really enjoyed it and would be back next time I'm wanting to treat myself to a nice matcha / tea drink. read more

Literally stumbled upon this cute little shop! Looked at the Yelp reviews and was like yep, I'm walking in. It's a cute little place located right next to Bangia just up the stairs. They have a few spots to sit and enjoy your drink. I got mine to go since we had dinner reservations. Greeted when I walked in and order taken immediately. The staff was very friendly and ensured they ask if I needed a milk alternative which I did so I opted for Oat milk. I ordered the strawberry matcha latte. Not only is the drink esthetically beautiful but it also tasted delicious! You can definitely tell that it's high grade matcha. I also noticed that they sell loose leaf tea as well as matcha. I purchased the black mango tea loose leaf and can't wait to make it at home. Definitely recommend. read more

Love love loved the hojicha cookie and strawberry hojicha that I got from here. So glad to have another spot in the city giving quality hojicha and presumably matcha if it's any indication. Sad to see Elly's Pastry go which was here before, but I think this place is better! The hojicha they used in the cookie and drink were really high quality, the items weren't too sweet and their flavor was really being honored without being pulled away from by other ingredients. They sell matcha sets, and other types of drinks such as matcha strawberry, lattes, etc. I'll say there are lots of places that use hojicha and matcha, and a lot of them get by with just average tasting items just to stay on trend, but this place really honors quality and is a standout in my book. This is a pretty decent matcha place. However, it is definitely on the pricier side- $9.25 after taxes for a small strawberry matcha latte with oatmilk. The space is very small with pretty much no seating - more of a grab and go type of deal. The service was friendly and given how packed the place was and that they hand whisk the matcha, the drinks came out in a reasonable amount of time. As for the drink, the strawberry puree they use is pretty good, but the matcha tasted a bit too grassy and bitter for me. The drink is also on the non-sweet side, so keep that in mind if you do like sweeter drinks. read more

I love all the cookies here at Mika's Direction but warning, you have to get there by 5ish (they close at 7pm) to get one bc they sell out. The cookies are chewy, soft, and pair perfectly with the different jam flavors. The matcha here is also very good. They whisk it very well and the shop smells of matcha. Wow, the strawberry matcha drink here is incredible!!! I love that it was not an artificial strawberry syrup. The matcha was also well whisked and didn't have any graininess in my drink. I got it with Planet oat milk, and I appreciate they give you the option of Oatly vs Planet (as well as other milk types). The store is pretty small and there's really only one real table for two people. It's very cute though and they also sell things like matcha whisks. The woman who helped make my drink was very kind and patient with me as I was reviewing the menu and the options available. I would definitely return! read more

It could be little hard to find without the sign board they put outside. The shop is small but still has 4 seats. Two counter top seats, and two seats by the window with a small round table. They had three "types" of matcha to choose from. I ordered hijime matcha latte with oatmilk 12 oz. They have options of non-dairy milk which is great! Wow! This place made me one of the best matcha lattes I've had in NYC. The mango matcha latte was mildly sweet with a mango flavor that didn't overpower the matcha. The matcha itself was very rich and had the perfect consistency. I think this place might be my new go-to for matcha! For snacks, they have matcha and hojicha cookies. They also have 2 options for oat milk and other milk substitutes for an extra fee. The cafe is located in a small area up the stairs, which can be easy to miss. Such a lovely new matcha café that opened recently. The entrance can be a little hard to find (and the name is stylised with a か, which added a little bit of confusion haha), but the unassuming entrance belies the wonderfully fragrant and cosy inside. The decor is very no-frills, which I appreciate, and they have some interesting gift-shop-esque items for sale in the back. The matcha was delicious (rich without being too heavy) with just the right amount of sweetness (tasted a hint of the underlying bitter flavour) and a perfect proportion of milk (wasn't too watery). Price point ($7.something) wasn't too bad actually -- practically a steal by NYC latte standards nowadays haha. I was really impressed with my drink and would love to come again! read more

This matcha was soooo good. I don't normally get fruit matchas but the strawberry matcha was lovely. The strawberry purée was not too sweet and the matcha had a great color and flavor. Only thing is that it was hard to find the place at first cause they didn't have the shop name on a sign, but it was on a menu on a sandwich board outside the door. The inside is pretty small as well, they have a little table with two seats inside with free wifi. read more

The purple Yam Souffle is just like the other locations. Hot, soft cakey texture balanced with an ice cold red bean Ice-Cream. So delicious! The squid tails on the other hand was not what we expected. It came out burnt and hard. The outer batter was not crispy either. We informed one of the waiters and he brought it back to inform the kitchen staff. We received a new batch that was not as burnt and had more flavoring this time around. However, the squid was still hard and not like the ones we get from other locations with smaller crispier pieces. Overall, it was still a good experience and I love the decorations at this location! This might be my second favorite location after the Flushing one. Would love to come back for brunch or hi-tea. Or regular food options when I have not already eaten dinner. My usual go-tos are the twister fries, Santa Fe chicken rolls, fried salted crispy chicken, and the trio dessert combo. However, this location has a lot more variety! At this point, we did not care for it anymore. We would have been fine if the staff acknowledged our concern.
