Stopping by at one of my favorite places to eat Japanese food. Got the ten sari soba The food was great and service was awesome

Great shrimp tempura. Sushi is tasty. Not too much variety. Simple. Can tell its quality without the bells and whistles. The servers were on top of it. Any time my water is filled without me needing to ask is a win in my book. Small area. Get there before the rush.

No frills, Japanese restaurant in kalihi that offers teishoku, sushi, and many other options at a great price! I always get the 3 option combo. Hard to find a spot that doesn't charge extra for butter fish. Lots of food, so you'll walk out leaving full. Highlights are the chicken katsu, teriyaki beef, and spicy tuna rolls and shrimp tempura. Perfect for satisfying if you are craving Japanese food.

A friend recommended this place and the shrimp tempura. Located in Kalihi, my husband and I decided to give it a go. Parking lot and spaces are compact but it didn't deter us. Upon arrival, it had a very casual atmosphere and we were seated and served with hot tea and water right away. The wait staff was prompt and friendly in taking our order. Our dishes didn't disappoint. I ordered the combination that included shrimp tempura and miso butterfish. Tempura was light and crispy and butterfish was two generous pieces and saturated in flavor. My husband ordered sushi, which came out quick and was fresh and delicious. This place is a great find and we will be coming here regularly.

It's been over seven years since my last review, and I'm happy to say this place is still great for both lunch and dinner. Kikuya offers a wide variety of items, and their lunch and dinner combo options are a popular choice. Being able to pick two or three items, makes it easy to try different dishes, and everything is serve served quickly without sacrificing quality. Prices remain very reasonable, and it's nice to run into familiar faces dining here. This really speaks to how much people enjoy this restaurant. Definitely a reliable go to if you're looking for a satisfying and efficient dining experience. Yumm!

Authentic Japanese food. They have a sushi chef so sushi comes out quickly. Clean with lots of table seating. Prices are reasonable. The food is on par with the quality you'll find in Japan. Highly recommended.

Each location has a different vibe, setup, etc. The King St. location is quaint, Japanese atmosphere. Lovely staff and the tempura plate is always wonderful. One of my favorites. Parking can get tight during busy hours.

Misoyaki butterfish + grilled ahi + vegetables tempura

Each time when I go there, the server is always ready without waiting for a long period for them to come to get your order. Although the restaurant is not very big, but it's cozy and feels like it's in Japan. It's one of a few authentic Japanese restaurants that's located in the Kalihi/Dillingham area, away from Ward/Kakaako. I've only been there during lunch time, so my go to is always the lunch box set. It comes with 2 choice of proteins + rice + miso soups + salad + tempura. The tempura vegetables is good! Very Crunchy and favorable. The shrimp tempura is not as good the vegetable tempura. The shrimp is soft inside which is like eating a mushy meat. The butterfish & salmon is pretty good portion, but it doesn't have enough flavor. The teriyaki ahi, I will not get that one. The ahi is overcooked that the fish texture is hard. It has no flavor. However, with this price that comes w/ 2 options of proteins + miso soups + other sides, it's a deal that can't find in town nowadays. It's reasonable and affordable. Overall, I will give it a 4/5 with the reasonable price that comes w/ a decent portion of the food for a lunch combo.

This is normally our go-to place for Japanese food close to home, and we usually have great experiences here, which is why this visit was disappointing. We're not sure if the staff was overwhelmed, but several things were off. We typically receive soybeans and pickled vegetables at the start of the meal, but they never came. One of the sushi entrées didn't taste very fresh, and our drinks were never served until we asked. Throughout the meal, we had to repeatedly ask for items that were ordered. Overall, this visit fell short of our usual experience, which was disappointing because we genuinely love coming here and hope this was just an off night.

Combination options: tonkatsu, miso butterfish, sashimi, nigiri (comes with miso soup, salad, and rice) Tempura Roll

I'm gonna be truthful, this is a very biased review. Me and my family have been going here forever and have gained a respect and love for this restaurant and the ladies that work there! We are known regulars. But, take into account a lot of what is said below: Very nice and homey dine in Japanese restaurant. I would say it's one of the better affordable sides. Good sushi, good dinner combos, and good seafood over all. Their three choice combos is one of the best deals, but any of their specialty rolls are great too! All the aunties will treat you well! Recommendation: -Super California -Caterpillar Roll -Kikuya Roll -Spicy Fish Stew (great for when you're sick)

Lunch Box: choice of miso butterfish and teri fish. Next time, I'm going to order sashimi wirh miso butterfish.

This restaurant was packed...no tables available inside. To our surprise they offered us to sit outside. That was the best table because it was very nice and quiet vs sitting inside. When it started to rain pretty hard, we were so lucky that they were prepared with a strong tarp & we didn't get wet at all. Great food options....so many choices. We will come back with reservations.

Debating between Chubby Boy and Diners, we saw Kikuya in the corner and decided to try something new. From the looks of the dining room, it was filled and lively. Coming in we were told a 10 min wait but a table cleared up as the rest of our party joined us. The service was great, coming by often to check on us. The young male server was great at answering our questions and giving us recommendations. I originally wanted the Grilled Hamachi Kama Special, but they were all out. The Ume Shiso roll also caught my eye, but I ordered it, only the Ume was available - which I ended up taking. I eventually ended with an Unagi Don and the Ume Roll. The Unagi Don was great. Very soft and the sauce that its grilled with was perfectly caramelized. But the Ume Roll was soooo so sour - making it almost inedible (to me). I had someone from our party try it and they had the same reaction. I wish I could give 4.5 stars overall! Will definitely come back to try other items!

Is there a semi private or private room for about 15-20?

Yes, its outside

It was his dream to open his own authentic Japanese restaurant using his special omakase experience from Japan and one of the first authentic sushi restaurants in Honolulu. It was a concept of "bringing Japan's finest to Hawaii" with a desire to "build a bridge between the two cultures of Japan and Hawaii." In 2018, operations were taken over by Testsuya Matsuda. A 2nd location was opened in Kahala in Jan 2024 by Hiroshima Mazda, whose specialty is traditional Japanese sushi (or omakase). Yohei Sushi 's menu offerings include: * Teishoku (or set meal). Comes with miso soup, rice, Japanese pickles, cold soba noodles, seasonal side dish. Main entrees are sashimi, tempura, maguro, misoyaki butterfish, ahi steak, saba. Salmon, ahi belly, katsu, and more. * Sushi Bar. With miso soup. Menu offerings are deluxe & standard assorted sushi, maguro don, Chirashi sushi. * Noodles. Choice of udon or soba with various combinations, e.g., nabeyaki, tempura, tororo, tanuki, zaru, kitsune, tori, tukimi, kake, and ojiya udon. Also, combo meals of tendon/noodle, sushi/noodle; and donburi of unaju, oyako don and ten-ju. * Side order & ala carte. Ahi belly katsu, misoyaki butterfish, saba, seafood tempura, maguro temprta, ahi steak, salmon. We've had the following: * Tendon and Noodle. Deep fried tempura of shrimp and assorted veggies in a rice bowl with sauce & hot udon. Very filling and tasty! * Tempura Teishoku. This teishoku had 3 large pieces of fried tempura shrimp and assorted veggies, e.g., carrot, eggplant, green beans, pumpkin, that were light and non-oily. Our teishoku meals came with pickled veggies, cold soba, rice, and miso soup with lots of wakame and radish sprouts. Very flavorful! They also offered a complimentary birthday scoop of ice cream with a dollop of an as a topping, which was refreshing and paired well! * Maguro Tempura Teishoku. Hubby's choice of fried tempura tuna set, and he noted that there were 8 large tender pieces of maguro that was lightly fried and non-oily. Very delicious and filling! * Unagi nigiri. The unagi was so flaky, tender, and light and had the right amount of sauce. Loved it! The presentation of the meals was beautifully plated with real, authentic Japanese small dish bowls and plates. The food was of good quality and very flavorful! Customer service was excellent! Diners are greeted by staff upon entering and thanked when leaving. The old-time servers were very patient, attentive, welcoming, and gracious! Our food orders came out in a timely manner, and the servers, with smiles, frequently asked if everything was okay and if we needed anything else. Hours of operation are: lunch daily from 11a to 2p, dinner from 5p to 9p, closed Wed. Happy hour is from Thurs to Tues from 1:30p to 5p. Located in Kokea Center that looks like a run-down strip mall at Dillingham Blvd and Kokea St, the restaurant interior has a great ambiance as if you were dining in Japan, as it is comfortable and welcoming. It was amazing to see almost every table was taken by dining customers. Reservations are a must, as people are turned away. Good thing I called for lunch reservations at 12:15p on a weekday, which was tha last table available. And the restaurant was packed the entire time that we were there! Free parking in the private lot shared by other businesses, as well as metered street parking. Yohei Sushi has been successful over the past years in its presentation, flavors, taste, and customer service, and we hope to return to try different menu offerings!

Was able to call ahead and reserve the SUSHI BOAT which is definitely a highlight of the night. Already want to go back do that I can try more of the menu. Got to try the Guava Pork and had no problem asking for a grill change so that when my wife cooked her food it didn't taste like guava. Unfortunately, while the…read moreconcept has potential, the overall experience fell short of what we've come to expect from comparable KBBQ and yakiniku restaurants. The Good -- A Creative Local Twist I appreciate what they're trying to accomplish here. The concept blends traditional KBBQ/yakiniku with local flavors, from the meat selections and marinades to the banchan and desserts. The variety stays relatively true to traditional BBQ while introducing familiar local ingredients. Even the banchan incorporates some creative touches. I'd say this is where the restaurant shows the most promise. The Bad -- Flavor Without Balance Unfortunately, the execution doesn't quite match the creativity. Both the meat marinades and banchan were overwhelmingly salty. Maybe my palate has changed with age, but good banchan should complement the richness of grilled meats, not compete with them. There's a difference between bold flavors and overpowering seasoning. Unfortunately, much of what we tried leaned toward the latter. The Ugly -- An Environment That Needs Serious Attention This was arguably the most disappointing part of our experience. Parts of the ventilation system were loud and dripping condensation. To make matters worse, our table's burner couldn't produce enough heat to properly grill the meat. We ended up changing tables twice: first because of the ventilation issue, and again because of the inadequate burner. And that's where I draw the line. When I go out for yakiniku, I expect to grill my meat, not slowly steam it over a struggling burner. Proper equipment and a comfortable dining environment should be the basics, not an afterthought. My Overall Impression: There's potential here, but potential alone doesn't justify a disappointing dining experience. The young staff appeared energetic and eager to work, and I genuinely hope management gives them the tools, equipment, and working conditions needed to succeed. Kale, as the chef and someone associated with the restaurant's direction, I'd encourage you to take a closer look at the experience being delivered beyond the kitchen. Your creativity deserves recognition, but the food, equipment, atmosphere, and service environment all contribute to your restaurant's reputation. A good concept got me through the door. Unfortunately, based on our first visit, this isn't an AYCE yakiniku spot I'd be eager to return to. There's potential here, but there's also plenty of room for improvement.

Funny enough, everyone dining that evening seemed to be couples, and we were the only two ladies without men, so we got seated at the corner of the counter. What sets this omakase experience apart from others I've tried is the chef's attention to detail. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared with precision, creativity, and a unique touch. The ingredients were of exceptional quality, and the presentation was just as impressive as the flavors. I'm terrible at remembering every dish, but one that really stood out to me was the black sesame tamago. It was such a comforting, warm finish to the experience. Watching the chef prepare it was fascinating, especially knowing how much time, patience, and skill went into perfecting it. By the way, the ambiance is great. When we finally closed the deal on this trip, we searched online for a nice gastronomic experience. Indeed, we found Hiro No Uchi, a sushi omakase establishment that fit the bill. Little did we know that the experience would take us to journey including a speakeasy environment with a doorbell that would usher us into this small intimate restaurant which used to be a bank complete with a vault and secret passageway connected to a hidden bar. And within that small enclosure, he transformed into a wizard creating wonderful, out-of-this-realm nigiri that played tricks on our palates. The quality of the fish was nothing short of superb. His creative use of ingredients popped in our mouths - a literal party in every morsel. We could not help but close our eyes, shake our heads and do a slow appreciative clap for each and every bite for all fourteen plates. One of the most memorable meals we've ever had. Dare I say top two? Yes! The intimate setting itself lent a relaxed and genial atmosphere. All the patrons sat entranced at the wizardry of Hiro's magic.
