This is a pretty average sushi place ran by Chinese family. The sushi is somewhat on the smaller side and nothing special. I tried their house roll and a chop scallop roll. The chop scallop roll was not bad. The house roll was pretty average. The ingredients are fresh. Prices are basically what you expect at other restaurants. Parking is free in the lot on Sunday. Monday to Saturday, you do have to pay for parking. Service was ok. You only get service if you ask for it. The salmon gama is a pretty good deal here for $10ish you get 2 halfs of the salmon head. Tasty but somewhat snack sized Japanese place close to Metropolis. Parking is available in the plaza lot but it isn't free, which is totally stupid. Park on a side street instead. The inside is pretty modern but bare bones. Staff here speak Cantonese. Disclaimer. I had the Bento Box 1. The bento box is pretty spartan if you ask me. A few pieces of sashimi and some tempura, then a salad and some white(!) rice, and a bowl of miso soup. Honestly it would've better if they at least included some teriyaki. Recently ordered house roll takeout (photo shown with 4 out of the 5 pieces). I am used to rolls with 6 pieces and this order's house roll was slightly disappointing because only half of house roll had avocado inside and I love avocado. I commend them for fast takeout and an easy place to park, grab and go for a simple sushi fix. Server was nice and offered me tea while I waited for takeout. Past dine-in experience was usually for their set lunch and dinner boxes. This place may not be run by Japanese but they offer spacious booth seating available, clean layout, convenient parking and friendly service. Parking is free, reimbursed with ticket. Attached parts of its menu in photos as they showcase quite a variety of dishes. As with many restaurants, prices have gone up... their signature winter California rolls now priced as $10.95 but they still carry a decent selection of reasonably priced appetizers such as Agedashi tofu for $5.95, rolls starting at $3.75 and teriyaki dishes from $13.95 to 18.95 (not shown in menu photos). When arrived the young Chinese waitress with an attitude scolded me that I did not need to call that I should have just come in person and check with her?! Who was she kidding? After being seated, I had to use the ladies room. I must say that I am VERY impressed that for such a LARGE single bathroom that they didn't double it as a storage room for the vacuum and mop etc etc. It was prime dinner time, there was no line-up ... was that a hint from the Big Guy above? We were seated at a booth. I think they made the booths to accommodate people 6 feet tall and taller. The distance between the seat and the table was about 1 foot. So if I wanted to sit back comfortably, I couldn't reach the table. If I wanted to eat my food, I had to sit on the very edge of the seat (that hurt my butt). We ordered a small Sashimi, a Philadelphia roll, and 3 pieces of Massago. The bill came too ... $39 (blink blink) I had to do a double take. $39?? We did not order alcohol. Granted the prices were right there on the menu. My fault I didn't look at the prices, I just assumed that seeing we order almost the same thing at all sushi places that the prices would be similar ... uuuuh ... nope!! WRONG-O!! Salad dressing tasted like blended onions and there were pieces of lettuce that were black. I ordered a winter roll and it tasted off and had almost a tablespoon on mayo on each piece. For a Chinese run sushi place, its a good price and they give you quite a bit of food. Obviously, their rice is a bit too thick, flavourless and mushy. Their spicy salmon roll was disappointing with just a giant squeeze of sriracha on top...the tataki was also poorly sliced but huge slices of fish. Lots of crab meat in the alaska roll (the chinese kind not the korean kind) but again, good prices. Way too much rice on the chicken teriyaki roll though... Also came by with a groupon once and we got a deal with gyoza, chicken teriyaki, some nigiri and sashimi as well as a roll. Again, spicy salmon roll was not very good and everything else was average. This little restaurant is an amazing place right by my neighborhood. My boyfriend and I frequent this location often as it's less than a 5 minute drive away from home. Food: their food has never disappointed. I have always had an amazing service both in-store and take out/delivery. Service: In the store, the staff are all amazing, always knowing exactly when to come and clear our empty plates. That being said, on my boyfriend's birthday, I ordered take out for him. I decided not to pay tip by card because I had coins on hand that I wanted to get rid of. I sent instructions to call me as my buzzer was not working - he did not follow those instructions then got annoyed at the fact my buzzer didn't work. He commented that if I was too cheap to pay a top then I should pick up my own orders. I guess he didn't see the coins in my hand. In this day and age, why should we as consumers be judged based on how much tip we give? If this is the kind of restaurant they are, I cannot fathom how they will continue to keep customers despite having good food. I decided to order a party platter through delivery. As the ordered was placed, there was no indication that they had limitations to how far that they were willing to deliver. We waited the anticipated of 45 minutes...and finally, when it arrived, the delivery guy said, "Just to let you know, we don't normally deliver to your area...." The reason I eat so much sushi is because I always manage to convince myself that sushi is healthier than whatever I plan to cook at home or the wherever am planning to eat out at. Run by Koreans with some Korean inspired dishes. I'm not complaining though since they know how to make their food! The restaurant itself is really cozy with booths and private rooms. TVs around the place and is a great way to wind down the day, go for lunch or just hang out with friends. With an extensive menu that is well priced, there is something for everyone! Every time I come here (which is not often enough) I get the tuna oil tataki, baked salmon sashimi, winter california roll and spicy tofu. At lunchtime there are really affordable boxes which come with an assortment of goodies. There are also roll combos and such to share and are a good value. The baked sushi and sashimi is what distinguishes Kiku from other Japanese places and there are many restaurants especially around the Metrotown area! They bake the rolls with a mound of scallop and mayo in top and their salmon sashimi with a ponzu sauce and mayo. When it bakes the mayo is gooey and easy to eat and although it is fattening it is so yummy (my friend thought it was cheese once)! Okay, so it might not sound all that appetizing when I explain it, but it is really quite something unique. Their spicy tofu is a korean inspired dish and is kind of a stir fry dish with veggies and tofu in a not overly spicy sauce. It comes in a fairly large portion so it is good to share. This sushi restaurant has very good food at good prices. I have eaten here often. I have started to eat out a little again during this Covid pandemic and when I entered this restaurant I found the servers to be wearing masks which made me feel comfortable. But I was horrified to see the older sushi chef preparing the many orders of sushi without wearing gloves or wearing a mask! He was talking continuously with the second sushi chef who thankfully was wearing a mask and gloves. The mask prevents droplet spread of this disease and I was so surprised this restaurant could be open and serving the public when they aren't following proper protocols. Disturbing. When I unrolled the last one I found it was made of three flat end pieces full of sinew , the parts that are usually discarded (photo on request) or cooked for BC rolls. You couldn't tell from the top because of the large dollop of siracha sauce The BC roll filling was unremarkable, mostly skin, no meat The spicy tuna was the best out of all, although still chopped, there were no traces of sinew I was excited to try Kiku given its rating and proximity to work but was quite disappointed. This was one of my favourite restaurant until I was eating near the sushi prep table. I heard one of the chef let out a soft short cough, every few seconds while continuing making sushi. At first I thought he had a cold so I came back two weeks later and his cough was still there. I tried to have lunch there again a month later, same situation. I think something is wrong with him and he should not be handling food. I was thinking of ordering delivery since it's been a long day and I just wanted to stay at home. I searched Burnaby delivery and found Kiku. I noticed that on their website they have an area circled out. I am guessing it is the location that they would deliver. Where I live is unclear on the map. So I thought I would give them a call to confirm if they are able to deliver to me or not. I called them, gave them my address and asked if they could deliver to me. They said they can deliver to me and told me to order online. After deciding what to eat on their website, and inputted my address to make an account. The website said that "Sorry unable to deliver to that address". I was in shock, I called them to asked about it and all they said was that they couldn't do anything about it. What?! I don't understand if the staffs there doesn't know how to use a map to search out what area they deliver or what it is. But this kind of mistake is what drive customers away from your restaurant. Service here is alright. I was seated promptly but it took me a while to flag down the waitress to take my order. The waitress who took my order was emotionless and cold, however another waitress came back to check up on me was nice. However, the food was really a dissapointment. It may be due to the fact that they changed management, because Kiku is now run by Cantonese people. Winter California Roll 2/5 stars This was the only reason that compelled me to go to Kiku Sushi haha. On Urbanspoon, yelp and foursquare everyone was raving about this roll! The winter california roll is topped with a scallops and a sweet mayo sauce that is then torched. This was definitely one of those gimmicky foods where the presentation was better than the actual taste. The Japanese mayo itself was tangy and sweet and had charred flavour to it, having being torched, however the flavours didn't mesh well with the california roll. In Japanese restaurants, there are usually two kinds of imitation crab meat. One of a firmer variety and another of a mushier, creamier variety. Kiku's imitation crab meat was of the latter variety. I felt that it could have worked better if the crab meat was of the firmer variety, to add some contrast, because the mayo on top just made the roll too mushy. read more

For appetizer, get the beef tataki if you like your meat raw once in a while or sometimes. You will not regret it. The other appetizers pale in comparison. I never had it before I came to Kiku. Now I think this will be one of my top choices at a Japanese restaurant. Ended up ordering a second plate. Though Kiku is a small, privately-owned restaurant, it's got a good selection of beers. We ordered a Sapporo first, rinsed the food down with a large Asahi, and finished with a Kokanee. I'm giving a bonus star for a clean and fully-stocked washroom. I come here all the time with my boyfriend and/or my sister. It's always my go to place for sushi :) I love their awesome roll. It's basically a California roll with spicy salmon on top the restaurant is very clean and presentable & all the staff/servers are all nice. Sometimes it can get quite busy on a Friday or weekend around dinner time. It is paid parking, but they reimburse you if you save your ticket and give it to them inside. As a sushi-holic in Vancouver, I think Kiku is an average sushi joint. The goods: They definitely renovated between the last two times I went, which, was 2.5 years apart. The decor is nice and all that, but quite honestly, I couldn't care less about looks. The okays: Sushi is okay, but it looks hastily made and such, however, if you're like me and prefer taste over presentation, the sushi is live-able. The non-sushi dishes fare better in my opinion, the udon is tasteful with many toppings, and the portion of the chicken karrage was generous, even if the chicken was bland. The poors: They only had 2 servers for the whole restaurant that night, so service was short and hastened. Like many Japanese restaurants in Vancouver, the servers spoke Mandarin. Including to us. And my biggest complaint, is that contrary to the decor in the restaurant, the bathrooms are deplorable. I generally don't make comments on restrooms, but this one was dirty and cramped, with a near-broken faucet. At least they had tp and paper towels. Overall, I would not plan another meal here, and especially living in Vancouver, I would definitely try a different Japanese restaurant. I have a thing for hole-in-the-wall sushi joints. I find they're usually the best ones, cheaper and more accessible than the large, splashy, Robson Street type places. Kiku is no exception. The place is located in a kind of strip mall, across the parking lot from a London Drugs store on Kingsway. It happens to be right near my work, which is why I first stopped in. I've kept going back because of the food. Particularly, the sashimi box. This combination is exactly right. You get some tuna and salmon sashimi (always good quality -- I actually find I like the salmon better sometimes, which is unusual since I mostly prefer tuna), some chicken teriyaki, a couple pieces of tempura and a miso soup. You also get a little green salad and fried banana, which frankly I could leave because I think the banana is not a fruit that lends itself to cooking, except when baked into bread. Kiku is a busy little place, so if you're in a rush, I'd avoid it at lunchtime during the week. Also, it's not the cheapest sushi on the block: the combo I mentioned will run you about 11 bucks. But for me, it's the Buffet Philosophy of eating--I'll pay a little more to get exactly the food I want. However, given the number of good, cheap sushi joints, I'll take one star from this place for the higher prices. read more
