The hubby and I were jet-lagged and hungry, on the verge of HANGRY! Good ole Yelp directed us to Kick Back Jack's, this little diner that was open at 6:00am. We were the first customers of the day and we were promptly greeted and seated by the friendly waitress. After looking over the menu, I decided on a breakfast dish with 1 pancake, scrambled eggs, and 2 sausages, served with an unending cup o' joe. The pancake was ENORMOUS! The eggs and sausage were a normal-sized serving. The food was fresh and tasty. I finished everything but the pancake; I think I could get a couple more breakfasts out of that pancake alone. We were looking for Salmon Benedict but it seems that they've changed their menu. We ended up ordering the country fried steak and blueberry pancakes. The portions are huge, definitely shareable. The country fried steak is better than other breakfast places and the hash browns were on the crunchy side, just the way I like them. The pancake had a great crunch to it as well. They tend to put a lot of butter on toast and pancake, but wasn't a big deal. Overall a decent breakfast. The portion sizes here are huge!!! I'm from out of town so I didn't know what to expect but I loved my whole experience here. If you like pasta or mac & cheese, definitely get the shrimp and pork mac & cheese. I doubt you'll be able to finish it but the flavor is out of this world and you can always take it home LOL The Chilaquiles were basically nachos with rice and beans on the side, and drizzled with meat, eggs, and guac that was bursting with flavor. My one complaint is that they were more like nachos because there was no sauce or wetness to them. The dirty breakfast burrito was good, it had a ton of Carnitas but I was hoping for something other than that because it was mainly a big bite of Carnitas every time. The dirty sauce is amazing, it taste like nacho cheese combined with the chipotle cheese and you can't go wrong with adding that to any of your orders. I always enjoy the food and also the choices. Most the time the servers are friendly and usually mention how long they worked there. Last time was past Tuesday with 2 friends and we had breakfast. I'm sure they have some tasty menu items, that are sure to satisfy all cravings but $11 for 2 eggs and bacon, seems pricey, even for California. For an extra $3, they will throw in toast and hash browns. When I type in "gluten free food" in yelps search, Kick back Jack's shows up in the #1 spot. Although after reading their very lengthy menu, I could see how some items could be prepared that way, but there was nothing on the menu that indicates gluten free. That could use some improvement. Walking around the restaurant, you could see the portions are large and satisfying, but still overpriced in my opinion. My husband ordered 2 scrambled eggs, bacon, side of wheat toast and hash browns for $14 I opted to play it safe, got a side of cup of fruit (mostly cantaloupe) couple pieces of sliced banana, grapes and half of a half-ripe strawberry, (wasn't impressed for $3.50) and 2 sausage links for $5.50 (even less impressed). What I did like, is they had a nice sized room for large parties, had multiple stalls in the women's bathroom and clear glass coffee mugs (which I think is way cool). They also had a little display case of items close to the host desk. $32.00 for 2 cups of coffee, my 2 sides as a meal and my husband's 2 scrambled eggs. Just seems steep for a first meal of the day. We got there around 11am on a Thursday Morning. Waited for about 20 minutes to be seated, we got sat got some menus, the server, I didn't catch her name, but she's tall, on the younger side and slender came over briefly to ask if we knew what we wanted and we had said no as we had just sat down. She then proceeded to have us wait for 20 minutes until she came back around. She took our order, and left again not to be seen until the food was done. The food was mid. The best part was the pancakes but the hashbrowns had a funny texture, and the chicken salad just kinda looked thrown together but it wasn't very good. The food took around 25 minutes to come out. Order of pancakes, house salad, waffle combo, and a chicken salad. The sides of the waffle Combo came out first, with the pancakes and hashbrown side. It was another 10 minutes before they got our salads out. Funny right? The server also brought whatever dressing she wanted and said she would come back with the dressing I had asked for and then didn't. We finished our food, and she came around and we asked for a box, and she said she would be right out. She came back out and tended to some tables around us, no box, and then left. We waited a bit before I got up to ask for a box since the server didn't know what she was doing very obviously. To be honest there was 3 tables around us, 4 including us. Not super busy for her section, but it was obvious they don't have any sort of system, just looks unorganized. And it was $73 for what we ordered, no drinks. This place was so close to a five for us. We gave it a four but it is the highest four that we have given thus far. The service was exceptional. The food was well beyond what we expected. The portions sizes are large enough to share. We will be back again so that we can try the family breakfast platter option that they have on the menu. The highlight of the entire meal was the bacon. If you're looking for a place to get great flapjacks, then KickBackJacks is the place. Expecting the usual batter, I was pleasantly delighted to discover their version was more like a corn meal base. It was not at all heavy or dense. They had a "dirty" section depending on the meal, meant you had a Nutella-like spread or "dirty cheese". Maybe next time I'll venture over to the savory side and try the dirty cheese. For now, I was very satisfied with the berry banana flapjacks. Another treat was the sweet cream cheese discreetly placed along. Now that I've covered the flap jacks at length. Let me review the other items at the table. The oatmeal was oatmeal with the usual add ins. I was disappointed that they wouldn't make the accommodation to substitute toast for a single pancake. The ambiance of the restaurant was fun and carefree. While waiting for our table (15min for a Saturday morning). Many various murals around the place of the Kickback Jack rabbit makes for silly conversations and distractions for kids. We noticed there is bar seating for those dining alone or for a quick bite. It's first come first serve so it's a risk you take. And just like this review, I feel this place has a lot going on and it can't decide what exactly it wants to be. Came here straight from ONT starving from an early morning flight. Did not disappoint. Tried the pecan waffle (syrup and sugar on side), Santa Fe farm skillet, and fresh basil omelette (with hash brown). Really good!!! There were lots pecans in the waffle and it was filling.
