I like this place, the atmosphere, the friendly staff, the space to work and the variety of the people that come in for coffee. I like the coffee. I like the decor, although I don't view it from the mirror of is this representative of the Asian culture. It's just one guys take on what he wants for his coffee shop, no more, no less. This place is super awesome!! I brought my girls here after a fun (and very long) night of partying dowtown before the wedding and I swear Kick Butt Coffee saved me. They hand-press espresso and mix it with whatever you want...the BEST coffee ever! And the coolest deco...and have a great beer selection :) The ONLY downfall is that there usually is only one girl working so the service is pretty slow. But I will tell ya, it is totally worth it!!!!!!!!!! A great find. read more

I love this place. Best time to go in my opinion is Thursday night for the open mike music. I go almost every Thursday. Never had a bad cup of coffee or bad service. The only reason I didn't give a full five stars is because I use a wheelchair and it's a little cramped for getting around when it fills up. That's not a deal-breaker, though and I don't see how that could be changed without taking away seating. Funky decor, interesting feng shui. I very much like this place. I started going when they had a location in the triangle and I liked the old martial arts movies playing in the back ground. That was good enough to get me to come back a few times, but then the service kept me coming. I brought my daughter there with me and the barista took extra special care to make her non-caffeinated drink look and taste especially appetizing. I judge a lot of places by the service they provide for my kids. This place gets high marks for exemplary customer service every single time I've come in. read more

This coffee shop is close to my office, so I stop by often when I am in need of caffeine. The staff is consistently friendly. The theme of the cafe is fun and unique, though I find the martial arts movies in the background distracting. This place is the perfect place to go when you want a taste of Austin, they have a menu that consists of not only coffee but food and booze. I only gave it 4/5 stars because it's pricy, and their mocha drinks tend to be a little too sweet. I have a sweet tooth so normally that wouldn't even bother me but lots of times all you can taste is the chocolate and no other flavor. Stick with the spearmint green tea! read more

I have yet to receive good service when I come into this place. Granted, I come in early in the morning as it is the only place open which is awesome and why I gave it two versus one stars. The staff has been lest than polite, so when I have to pay 7 dollars for something that I would only pay 5 for in SoCo, its pretty irritating. I am not sure if there is a level of pretentiousness here that is only found in Dallas or what it is, but it is awfully disappointing. read more

I went to Kick Butt Coffee Music & Booze last night (07/24/2015) and had an absolute blast! The musical performances were fantastic, the barista/bartender was holding it down and super friendly despite the crazy crowd, and the decor was awesome. Dig the logo too, and can't wait for my next trip! Didn't get to try the coffee, so that is a definite must for my second visit. read more

This place is great! Two of my favorite things rolled into one: Gongfu and Coffee! I haven't been to the second because I like the first so much I don't see the need to go. The interior is a good blend of new age coffee shop meets ancient China. I've been here a few times and had no trouble with any staff or my drink? I order simple coffee though. The coffee it self is flavorful and fresh, not to mention carries a pretty good kick(pun intended). I recommend this place, if you can't enjoy it's atmosphere move out of Austin and open up a seat for me! read more

FYI the Texas Hill Pecan beans are sort of gross. The vanilla is too strong and made the coffee taste like we used crappy flavored creamer in it. So, if you only like coffee that doesn't taste like coffee, give it a shot. If you like coffee with soft undertones of other flavor stay away. read more

This is a great little spot with good food and good treats. I love their giant cookies. And the baristas are wonderful, one of which is Ian. He works about every Sunday when I'm apart of a weekly event, and he is not only integral to the whole thing, he also makes up really good drinks (both alcoholic and non) and allows his personality to shine through his performance as a member of the kick butt team. This place is what a coffee shop should be. It's not overcrowded, you don't get shuffled through an obnoxious line. Then at the end of your short wait, you are given an great cup of joe. I haven't tried all the different mixes they have, usually I am headed to work when I get some. The drinks and food are a bit pricey for what they are and for the taste and quality. But what really makes this place stand out is their environment. They have plenty of musical guests and other events that are entertaining enough to keep a steady flow of people coming back. I had been here when it was relatively new and they were even selling little ninja stars and other paraphernalia to go with their theme. Since then, they have found new ways to improve - expanding the menu, adding more comfortable seating, etc. It is different in the sense that it's like a coffeeshop-bar, because of the alcohol they serve alongside cream or caffeine, and also in the entertainment aspect. However, if coffeeshop-bar IS what they are going for, the ambience can be improved upon and the motif will maybe need to "grow up" a bit more. As it is right now, I think Kick Butt may be trying to do too many things at once and the conglomerate product isn't polished quite yet. But it's a nice place to hang out with friends and check out the variety of things they have to offer. The local bands that play here are always pretty good whenever I go, so check them out as well! read more

Stopped in for a taco and coffee while having my car serviced in the area. Had the mocha, which was very good. I especially liked the salsa that came with the taco. Atmosphere was laid back with a steady stream of regulars coming through. I noticed the guy at the counter knew many of them by name and greeted them like friends. I popped open my computer and did a little work while listening to The Everly Brothers and other oldies playing in the background. Overall, was a nice experience, and a great departure from the "chain" coffee shops in an area of Austin that desperately needs something like this. I've noticed a few other reviews complaining about prices. I'll gladly pay an extra buck or two to support locally owned, fair trade businesses. read more

It's ok..... the coffee wasn't that great, breakfast tacos were little babies, I work for a taco place that make fresh, use local fresh ingredients and sells their tacos for the same price at double the size. Order from another place or call them tequilas cuz those are not tacos. Also, I know I'm not a regular but that doesn't mean while taking my order you have a conversation with the person behind me. I also work at a coffee shop & know it's possible to please non-regulars. Maybe I'm being picky cuz I work in two places that do better what I paid way too much for today. I do not personally drink coffee, so I can't really review the coffee. But every time I go to Kick Butt, which is quite a bit because my dad is somewhat of a regular musician there, I order their strawberry banana smoothie. And every time I order it, I am very satisfied. The Yin Yang cake is also delicious. I found the customer service to be quite friendly, and I kind of like the decor of the cafe. I mean, it certainly isn't the best interior design I've ever seen, but for a homey little coffee shop, it's fun and relaxing. The only real complaint I have is that if you're going to play there as a musician, I'd be mindful of the sound system. It can be a little whacky at times, but not by much. read more

My Granddaughters and I go to Kick Butt Coffee every morning before school. We love the breakfast tacos - our favorites are potato egg & cheddar and bacon & egg. YUMMY! Excellent customer service. All of the baristas are great, but Bruce really takes care of everyone during the open mic nights at Kick Butt. He is very attentive to everyone & knows his stuff. I have been going to Kick Butt Coffee for years, and I love their coffee (Americano is my morning beverage), tasty tacos and pastries, and their unique atmosphere. I always support good local businesses, especially ones that divert from the norm. If you want a boring chain coffee shop, then you can go to every other corner and drink their sludge and eat their processed food. I've never had a bad experience here and the staff has always been friendly. As a plus, it is open later and hosts musicians and other crazy local events - at which time you can drink coffee or alcoholic beverages or one with both. I'm from Austin and this place IS Austin - not some hoity-toity establishment - hence the kick butt name (which I think is AWESOME, by they way). I wish I still lived up North where I could go there more often - maybe they'll open one South some day and make my day start out much brighter! read more

First of all, this place smells so bad that I could never stay here by choice for more than a few minutes. Immediately upon entering, you're hit by an overwhelming chemical smell. I want to like this place because of its convenient location, but I'm never impressed. Most recently, I stopped here to grab an iced coffee and a bagel. The barista asked if I had a few minutes to wait because the bagel takes longer to toast than people usually expect. I really appreciated her warning, but I thought it couldn't possibly take more than 5 minutes. Over 15 minutes later, I still hadn't received my bagel. When I approached the counter, it was clear that the barista had forgotten all about it. She apologized, said the toaster doesn't work very well, and stated that the bagel wasn't completely toasted and still needed a few more minutes. At that point, I just wanted to get out of there, so I took the bagel and left. It certainly wasn't worth the time I waited for it because it was cold, hard, and tasteless. Another thing that annoyed me about this place is in regards to the email list I unknowingly signed up for after completing an online survey . A few weeks ago, the email included a personal ad from the latest gift card winner. I found this to be extremely weird and tacky. read more

If I could give this place no stars I would because technically I can't write a review about their drinks. On 8/5/2014, I went to meet a friend here before an appointment. I come in and their is a short line. Great! I order and pay for a Hot Caramel Mocha to go and pay for it. The guy in front of me has his order messed up and they get him fixed immediately. I sit and wait. The barista grabs the phone and walks out the door. The cashier goes in the back and starts doing dishes. No one is making my coffee! Ok, maybe she needed to wash something before starting my coffee, so I wait but stand close to the counter as to show I am still waiting. She looks up but doesn't move. New customers walk in. She stops to wait on them. She takes one order and realizes I am still waiting. She verbalizes to me that she is going to take care of it. She comes back with the wrong order, some Chai Tea looking cold drink. Okay, you know what never mind. I am now late to my appointment give me my money back. The perplexed looked she gives was as if I had spoken in Greek. She then proceeds to hand me $1.50 back, instead of the full $5.50 I gave her to begin with. Incredible! read more
