Top notch 100%!! Third stop along the way - the others didn't have heavy cream and this place KICKED BUTT! Ordered the usual decaf flat white with heavy cream (10oz). Our barista knew exactly what she was doing- it's delicious, very coffee forward, HOT and exactly what we were looking for. Yet, as she handed it to us, she asked us to take a few sips and try it- if it wasn't right, she wanted to remake it. (Now THAT is kick butt customer service!) The whole "Kick butt" thing will make sense once you get here- this place is obviously partnered with the dojo next door. And it definitely has the "old Austin" vibe about it - even on a random mid-day Friday. Awesome study spot with great drinks and plenty of outlets and seating. It's connected to the martial arts studio next door, so there's some traffic going through the cafe sometimes. It's otherwise pretty peaceful, and the music is relaxing and not too loud. Parking is easy, plentiful, and convenient. I had an oat milk latte with their raspberry syrup, and it was made perfectly. Such a vibrant and fun environment/community! I came here to see a friend perform her poetry pieces during a Sunday open mic. It was an entertaining night for sure. They had cocktails/well drinks for $5.25 which was great. I have to take off one star for the drinks! I ordered a simple matcha and the server did not blend the drink as I watched him make it. He stirred it with the end of a knife which seemed unsanitary and odd that they did not have proper equipment. Definitely check this place out. read more

LOVE this place!!!! I came yesterday because it is next to where my son is attending summer camp. I came again today. I love the coffee. The caramel macchiato and the breakfast sandwich on a crossaint. It's a chill atmosphere. The staff are very nice and helpful with suggestions. Stopped by this coffee shop on my way to work and was definitely a pleasant surprise. It's tucked away in a small shopping complex but it's huge on the inside and features a full bar! I grabbed an almond milk latte and two breakfast tacos and it was 20 dollars with tip. The tacos were really good and the coffee was better than some other really over priced shops in the area. It's a hidden gem and the service was nice. This place should be more crowded for the quality of food, WiFi and just abundance of space. A note to folks: their default tipping percentages are higher than other places -20,25,30% but I feel it's worth it. read more

I was pleasantly surprised by this cafe. Funky fun Austin vibes. BUT THAT Chai latte ! It was easily the best I've had around town. Bold spices that didn't hide behind the milk. Delicious. My review is solely for this location as a music venue - I didn't get any food or drink here. It seems like a cool place for that, though. They've got a cool corner stage, enough room for a dance floor, and vendors set up during SXSW. I'd recommend bringing earplugs if you're here for a while - the sound setup is legit and it is loud with a small space. This is a nice cafe with a more serious venue/restaurant type of vibe. Honestly I'm struggling to accurately describe it. If you go in on a regular Saturday morning it's a dingy little coffee shop with pastries and an extensive breakfast or lunch type of menu. Staff is fast! They crank out orders so smoothly. There's tons of posters on a couple of the walls about events there and around town. Poetry readings, concerts, book clubs, etc. I always take a look at what's coming. So some nights here, the vibe is completely different. I went on a Monday night, like 8pm, and they were hosting a burlesque show! There were a few tables near the stage but most of the rest of the space was filled with rows of chairs. The perimeter had vendors and the tech folks handling the lighting and sound for the stage. This was so fun. I had no idea what to expect, but this was a blast. I'm told buying a VIP ticket is totally worth it. read more

Kick Butt Coffee is one of my favorite local venues in Austin to go see live music, or to play at with my bands Frogmouth and Öld Phükkerz (shameless self promotion)! The venue is intimate, with great sound (both on stage and off), and the staff and management are always very accomodating. What's even better is that it's all ages and I get to bring my kids out to shows, and the whole family has a great time! The food and drinks are the icing on the cake, as their baked goods and tacos we've tried have all been high quality. This spot serves a variety of purposes in the community, whether it a be a great coffee shop that has fun and inviting ambiance, or a great venue giving up and coming bands and performers a place to share their craft with local music lovers. I tried their green dragon focaccia sandwich and their small black ice coffee. It was around $23 for both. The sandwich came with a side and i choose their chip and queso. I enjoyed the sandwich, but I wish the mushroom on it was cooked. The queso was really good. I've had friends tell me to go by this place for years. I came in on a weekday at around 3:00pm, and I think I was the only guest there at the time. Time for a post-pandemic update. While they still offer coffee and baked goods and sometimes more food items, Kick Butt's music focus has morphed into a much harder, louder scene that makes it feel and smell more like a bar than a coffee shop with music. Most of the bands seem to be punk or hardcore, with an occasional rock show. Not my scene, but it may be yours. The sound system is powerful enough for a room four times the size of this club, with an array of speakers both hanging and tucked under and in front of the stage that literally vibrate the floor and walls. The focus appears to be on producing videos of the live shows, which they play afterward on the mounted TVs and on their YouTube channel. But the end effect for the attendees is that this is an extremely loud club. Earplugs may not be enough if you're sensitive to very high decibels. I've been seeing live music my entire life and always wear earplugs, but it was still painfully loud for me. Many of us spent half the evening or more out front, where they have a few tables and speakers hung up so you can still hear the music, but it was a bummer not to be able to watch the show we came to see. Fair warning. They don't serve hot food during shows, just drinks and whatever baked good are in the display case, so plan ahead if you want to eat a meal before the show. I'm fairly certain it's still just a coffee shop with a somewhat edgy vibe during the daytime hours, and the proximity to ACC and I-35 makes it convenient for those in the area. read more

Stopped in on my way to work, greeted the staff as I walked in without being greeted back. Made multiple comments with no recognition- so customer service aspect is a bit lacking imo. Ordered a large matcha - the milk absolutely overpowered the matcha, could barely taste it. On the other hand.. a large here is huge! 24oz. This was my first time to visit and loved their concept of coffee, eats and live music. Very Austin and I appreciate the hustle. I came in for coffee and to meet a friend mid morning on a weekday. Coffee was good, but a couple of things didn't work well. One was they had the front door open and it was 45 degrees outside so we were super cold. Maybe there was a reason i wasn't aware off. Also, they were slow behind the counter. One person working with a long 7-9 person line. There were other staff, but no one was bothered by the customer line. Decided to check it out because my husband played at this joint years ago before we're about to leave Austin permanently. Typical atx hipster, overhyped and overpriced BS. Came here with an appetite (we train powerlifting) so needless to say we over ordered because that's how we're used to eating a big breakfast. I barely touched my food. Way over salted, to the point where you could tell they twisted the cap off and dumped it. Could feel the crystals crunching on my teeth through every bite. Muffin wasn't moist at all, more crumbly than anything, not sweet and tasted more like a scone than a muffin. Sucks to be a former baker who knows the difference, I guess. I don't know if they make all their stuff in house but they really need to hire more experienced chefs. I'm no Gordon Ramsey either but damn, I can cook, bake, and be a better barista all at once (for way less than $60 for two people) than what they seem to take so much pride in. There's a reason the first thing you learn in culinary school are all the different methods of cooking an egg. You mess that up, you're not only a bad cook but you literally messed up someone's entire day with a bad breakfast. Way to leave us with a horrid taste in our mouths before we leave this wretched and forsaken city. In addition, I came back into the restaurant to ask for a refund and overheard the manager saying how he "wishes the place was full of people like it used to". Put a bit more effort into the food you overcharge for, and don't just cover up the crack on the front door with colored tape and make it look like a crafty "explosion" to be quirky about it and get a laugh out of people. As I stood online I watched the white dude in dreads make the customer ahead of me her drink and he just eyeballed the amount of syrup going in. He didn't have that much of a welcoming energy and was kind of whatever throughout the whole transaction. Let me start by saying the 5 star reviews for the tacos....all lies! These "tacos" are what nightmares are made of. We'll get to that in a minute. When you walk in your hit with them smell of patchouli. I mean it's strong. This place looks, smells, and feels more like a hippie head shop. Against my better judgement, I got some tacos. They are premade. The older lady told me "if you don't like them, you come back and tell me about it! People loves these. They sell out everyday". Yeah well you're full of shit honey! Rudest employee I've ever experienced. Went in for a coffee and the cashier asked me if I like something to eat or coffee, then suggested their breakfast tacos. I asked if they were made in house and she said they were. I told her I appreciated the offer but declined and told her I work for a local company (I shared the name of the company) that also sells breakfast tacos. Her direct response was "those are garbage!". She could tell by the look on my face, how offended I was by the comment. She immediately apologized but the damage was done. What kind of hospitality is this? Is it a practice to insult your customers whenever they feel the need? I told her that her comments were completely unwelcome and unacceptable.
