I can be found here at least once a week, on Sundays, when the microphone is taken hostage by a bunch of wacked-out poets and musicians. It's my home away from home; it is my church. Maybe it's because of Spoken & Heard (the open mic event), but I think it's mostly because the atmosphere of Kick Butt is so warm and welcoming that I can't find myself satisfied for the week unless I've been there at least once. How many places do you know that a) Have a Wii b) Know you by name c) Have a Chuck Norris poster on the wall d) sell foam nunchucks and shurikens e) have a full bar f) have AMAZING coffee and food ?? I think you'll find that the answer is ONE. KICK BUTT COFFEE. Because there can be only one. read more

I stopped my because I was craving a sandwich and saw such great reviews for this place. I ordered a BLT with a side of queso/chips to go. I was disappointed with the BLT became there was just so scarce of ingredients for the price. I expected a regular layer of each ingredient but not the case, two small pieces of bacon a croissant with one leaf of lettuce and a slice of tomato. Just have just ordered a croissant somewhere and saved the money. And the queso that you get is quite literally the size of a small salsa container you'll get with a breakfast taco. I was so excited about this place but will not return. read more

I could care less about atmosphere; music, dancing, martial arts, creative arts - whatever. I patronize an establishment to get what I need and no amount of frilly curtains or stand up comedy will encourage me to return if my basic needs are not met. I started out ordering a large latte once or twice a week from KBC but soon discovered that it was close to $7 and I rarely finished it so I quickly cut back to a small. Another employee picks up our coffee order and while I was satisfied with the flavor I always thought it was a little expensive even for the small at over $4. I thought, okay, they specialize in coffee, what do I know, so I kept having my coffees. Today we decided to try out the lunch menu and placed the order by phone using the non-priced online menu. Never ... let me make that perfectly clear, NEVER will I ever order anything from this place again. I mean, who do they think they are catering to? Location--less than favorable neighborhood near a defunct mall, and in a strip mall no less, in a working class area. Now adding a community college into the mix and this place charges $15.00 for a dammed cold cut sandwich? Newsflash, they are not an upscale restaurant no matter what they think ... and they are surrounded by fifty places to buy a $6.00 - $7.00 sandwich every bit as good as what they are putting out. Advice from me is, get pricing on everything before you commit. Three people at my work ate lunch today to the tune of $45.00 - three sandwiches, with chips and salsa as sides, two cookies and one small coffee and a 16 oz bottled diet coke. Still in shock. By the way - it might not hurt to get some heat sleeves that actually stay on the coffee cups. What a pain to always have to tape it in place. UPDATE TO OWNER RESPONSE I appreciate your prompt and courteous response to my review. Maybe I've watched too many episodes of Bar Rescue and sometimes it seems that so many conflicts could easily be resolved with forethought about location and target markets. Since yesterday I have read repeated reviews about the prices at KBC but it never occurred to me to check them beforehand as I am in retail and understand about competition and the value of being consistent with other companies that provide similar products and services. Nobody likes a nasty surprise, so when a customer complains about our pricing I can always respond with, we are competitive, you will not find a similar product cheaper anywhere else. If you feel your product has a higher value, maybe pricing on the web site would prevent the kind of shock that we went through when we picked up our lunch. Do you sell any sandwich for under $9? if so that would be good information to have beforehand. I don't think any of us paid less than that and we all ordered different things. You cannot always rely on the customer to ask for pricing nor can you rely on remembering to warn them about an unexpected high price. It's not necessary to treat us all to lunch, although the offer is appreciated. Your web site offers detailed information about your menu, if you could add pricing, that should resolve the issue for future customers. You guys are like right next to the blood bank, this is not a downtown bistro that caters to upper end customers. Offer some affordable lunches for the working class and college students that you are surrounded by. I wish you the best. Cheers. read more

Who's Sifu and why is shameless self promo bad?!? We love this place. We only went because one of our friends takes fencing lessons nearby and doesn't wanna drive I35 back to S. Austin while her daughter is in training for a mere hour. Where's the reviews for I35? Think I'll find one. Anyway... we were up that way because we went to the really kick ass haunted house 'House of Torment' (which I should review soon because me and my 12yo daughter went partially through before she defied gravity and wrapped herself around my head like a cat screaming bloody murder before a zombi snuck us around the back to get out... she was positive death was upon us). Oh yeah, Kick Butt Coffee. True. My favorite part was the fact that they have a full bar and can put liquor in your tai chi. Brilliant and delicious. Their open mic was one of the best I've seen. We heard two new favorites that are new to Austin: The Greenlight Express and that other pop rock band from El Paso with the rad bass player. They definitely lose a star only because we had all our babies in our crack alley house near Highland Mall and despite what they say, it's not getting better and actually seems to be getting worse... read more

Chuck Norris? Check. Kung-Fu movie on play? Check. Kick Butt Coffee? Check. Kick Butt Coffee is one of many cafes within walking distance of my home, however, my girlfriends and I keep coming back. Why you wonder? We love the theme --- kitschy? We think not. It is playful! We love that NPR plays on early Saturday mornings and that the cafe is well-lit. We appreciate the spacious booths and the power of the iced coffee! I am most definitely a regular. read more

Despite the fact that the music can be a bit too loud and the prices are on the high side...KBC makes a mean dirty chai so I keep going back! The new expansion is great (and was much needed)! There's now plenty of seating and parking is never an issue. read more

200/10 stars for this place. Kicks Butt. Great for studies. vegan donuts. good-looking cookies. so intrigued, I think the waitress lady was a professional cup stacker. which is impressive. The logo f*cking rocks with a karate man holding a cup of coffee, which I sadly did not get the chance to try. But they also have smoothies and frappes. Good food choices. Good parking. dope interesting music taste. I would go here just to listen to the great amazing tunes. Good wifi, good study spot in my opinion. Definitely would come again. read more

Better than a Boot to the Head! But, wakes you up just the same! What a cool local joint. I'm a big supporter of local biz. And I gotta tell ya, this is a great place to support! Weather you're up at 7 in the morning ready for great cup of JOE or out late looking for a hip place to grab a good beer, this is the place to be. By the way, the even have liquor, that's right! You want a shot of Tito's with that Latte, HELL YEAH I DO! Try ordering some Austin made Vodka at 5bucks, sorry not on the menu pal... Check it out, you'll be glad you did! On the DL, I heard rumor that Chuck Norris was the silent partner (but, I'm not supposed to talk about that) I'm just hoping to get a picture with him in there sometime next to the poster of "Chuck sayings". See ya at the KB! read more

I know I seem like a chump for rating two places five-stars in a row, but check it out: I can't help myself. Kick Butt Coffee rocked my face off last night. Every Monday night they have live music that... wait for it... doesn't suck. And it's not too loud. It's instrumental, a mix between funk and jazz that actually really works for a light, casual party atmosphere. I was just expecting a nice cup of coffee, you know? Additionally, you walk in there, you get yourself nice happy hour deals, scrumptious inventive cocktails, and full, free use of an in-house Wii if'n you're into gaming it up. My barista ("baristo" for a man?) was Naiman-- now there is a dude what knows how to rule the hospitality industry. Dude was straight making up new cocktails for me on the fly. Dude opened a beer for my friend, cut his hand from a beer bottle malfunction (New Belgium, we are calling you out), and made a hilarious joke about it. Never missed a beat. Also didn't serve the bloody beer. I highly recommend this place to anybody who likes coffee, alcohol, good chill music, video games, or funny customer service workers. That ought to cover just about all ya'll if I'm not mistaken. read more

I went in here to get 2 iced coffees and 2 pre-made sandwiches. I had been here before over the years and this time I noticed they have expanded, taking down a wall and taking the spot next door. It looks great. The vibe is hit or miss and the food is average but the cookies and iced coffee are great. However, something was different this time around. The prices are not good anymore. My 2 iced coffees to-go and 2 cellophane wrapped cold sandwiches came out to a whopping $24.51 I really thought the barista said my total was 14 something and we were talking when I was signing my credit card slip. As I was walking out it hit me; "did she say 24?" Lo and behold I looked at my receipt and it was 24 bucks. I returned to the counter and asked the barista how much the sandwiches were and she said "I don't know, like 6 something and the coffees like 4.50 or 5" I let it go in the moment but thought I'd share this here with the yelp community and my neighbors in Hyde Park and surrounding areas. Great food, pretty cool staff but L.A. prices on the food is not Austin cool. I won't return but solely for the over pricing. If you're in the area try Corona Cafe, Epochs or Quacks instead. read more

Kick Butt Coffee - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Austin, Texas

Great atmosphere, food, and drinks. It's conveniently located near my new job so I suspect I will be visiting often in the future. I'm currently here for my second time today. The staff is also really friendly. 10/10 Would Recommend. read more

Good coffee, yummy pastries, pleasant staff, comfortable booths, and crisp red and black decor. What's not to like? There aren't tons of outlets, but the place wasn't ubercrowded the morning I was working there, so I had no problem. And you've got to love the martial arts theme. Kick Butt, indeed. I'm just a regular middle-aged female writer, and I especially appreciated not being treated like an intruder because I'm not a hipster wannabe and don't sport any tattoos. Not that I have anything against tattoos. Some of my best friends have tattoos (you know the shtick). But so many coffee joints are so into the whole too-cool-for-school thing that I wonder if they go to the city dump for their furniture. It's wonderful to find a place that is clean, well kept, and comfortable. Now, if there were just somewhere that didn't blast music all the time, although "Sympathy for the Devil" is on the loudspeakers as I write this, and that's hard to beat. read more

Kick Butt Coffee - Coffee & Tea Near Me - Austin, Texas

Long time customer of Kick Butt here. My husband and I have been hanging out at KB since June 2008! Since the expansion this has become THE PLACE to be! The venue is really awesome. If you haven't been in a while, you'll want to come check it out. My favorite drink is the iced caramel latte (made by Alyssa!). Unlike some other places, the drink is really smooth & has the perfect amount of sweet caramel. KB also has a pretty decent menu of food. The Mediterranean pizza is really yummy. I ask for extra toasted. The Tyler Durden sandwich is also really good. I get it with a Cesar side salad & a side of cha cha sauce for my sandwich (on toasts croissant). So good! Kick Butt has events every night of the week. The Thursday night music open mic is the best in town. Fantastic musicians & great crowd. And Dan serves up some mean drinks! If you didn't know, they have a full bar! read more

The coffee ninjas here are the best! The coffee is good and strong. And every cup has a minimum of 2 shots. I come here so often I don't even have to ask for my coffee anymore. This is one of my favorite coffee shops in Austin. Why -- the customer service and you get an E-normous cup of coffee!! I hadn't been to KBC in a while because I moved, but I was excited to stop by for a breakfast taco--which are super yummy. The owner was there and he was very welcoming and talked to me for a while. In the past I've been to a couple of their various music nights, and I think it's a great smaller venue to really connect with people and enjoy a more casual night out. There are so many coffee houses in Austin, it feels good to go to one where the barista isn't a snob. Kick Butt is a great community of kind people. Thank you! read more

The place is great, all the staff is extremely friendly. Unfortunately due to a series of events we will not be attending, promoting or performing at Kickbutt coffee anymore due to Mike. We recently performed with a touring band and we were told there will be a door person and sound guy and none was provided nor no reason why except for one person being sick. It was disorganized and we were expected to run our own sound with unfamiliar equipment. The touring act was mistreated and insulted by Mike and it showed how Kickbutt doesn't care about touring and local musicians. We will not be recommending this place for future acts. We hope this issue gets resolved. It sucks to down such a cool place because of one person. Here is a link with more details that was just posted on indie on the move from one of the bands. https://www.indieonthemove.com/venues/view/kick-butt-coffee-austin-texas read more

Extremely impressed with Kick Butt Coffee! The store front is VERY inconspicuous, don't be fooled - once you enter this legendary venue you'll be transported into an insanely cool bar, full of awesome people, local color, and KICK BUTT ATMOSPHERE! Yeah, lame pun but it's a damn cool place. I would highly recommend going here because not only does their coffee kick butt (it's smooth and delicious) their homemade cookies and breakfast tacos are da bomb! Check out Kick Butt Coffee if you live in the North Loop/Airport area because it's a hell of a lot cooler here than it is at the other hipstery "too cool for school" coffee houses nearby. read more

Kick butt coffee is the best! Been going to shows here for years and everyone behind the bar is so cool, both coffee and booze selection and prices are good, and the variety of shows and events is unmatched. Love this place read more

I love the funkiness of the place. I have a travel mug from here and I get a comment (and a smile) out of almost everyone who sees it. "Kickbutt coffee?? How strong do you like it?" -or something to that effect. Makes me lol everytime. the coffee's great. I love the caramel machiattos from here. No one else can do them like these guys. My bro likes to try everything on the menu. He's got no complaints either. read more

Great spot close to home... Had never been here but heard about a Friday night comedy showcase and coupling that with the word of mouth reviews, I finally gave it a shot! Coffee was great, and Dan definitely left a lasting impression that will bring me back for my second visit. I love this business model and vibe! I've been told this is the best place to see improv comedy in Austin and I know it's a great venue for punk rock shows. Ive been regularly visiting Kick Butt since my office moved in down the street. I recommend the (1) chai tea latte blended with their two different chai mixes, (2) the americano with two shots of espresso, (3) and their iced coffee. All are wonderful drinks to refuel your engine. If you can get there early enough, I also recommend you try their tacos! Delicious. This cafe is a bar too so... Yes, please! The service is always great and the atmosphere is original and cool. My only gripe is that the drink prices are comparable and sometimes more expensive than the big chains. If you're like me in this respect, grab a punch card for your 10th free drink and look for the many opportunities for BOGO! read more

I have to admit the first time I went in here i was NOT impressed. I *must* have caught them right after a rush. While i'm not impressed with their coffee their lattes are THE BEST I've had in Austin. Hands down. I've had the coffee twice now. I go by around 4pm and maybe that's a strange hour but one time my coffee was luke warm and the next time it tasted burnt. After a wicked crap day I stopped again and said it would be the last time, that's when I got the latte. + That latte was ordered, paid for and in my hands in less than 2 minutes. Super barista! + That latte was goooooooood + the employees are very polite. + I didn't have to repeat my drink order + there were zero snarky comments when I asked where the 'sugar free' list was (you know who i'm talking about...mermaid logos, attitude problems, over priced everything?) - not a big fan of the coffee. *might* try that one more time I don't know if i'll swing by to try and "adult bev" any time soon after work but I will eventually and update from there. read more

I like this place. I warn you coffee aficionados though. The coffee is average, yeah like meh. Sorry, just honest. The atmosphere is nice. Waited quite a while to get my coffee since there was only one batista who also took the orders despite the fact that it's a café and one shoujd expect a morning rush (i entered the place at about 10am). By the time I got my coffee there were 8 people queuing. Had a medium size soy cappuccino with flavor. Nice that they offer non dairy milk. They had old looking gluten free chocolate dounouts but nothing vegan (unlike what was suggested by their menu). Coffee was given in a plastic cup though I wasn't going anywhere which is a real pitty. Coffee was way too hot and burn my tongue. Had a blueberry muffin as well- it wasn't fresh. I won't be coming back. read more

Under normal circumstances, I'd have given this place four or five stars. I've been in a few times, and despite a bit of inconsistency in how my drink was made, it was always delicious. However, last night when I went in for a drink before rehearsal, the barista was extremely unfriendly and unhelpful. I ordered my usual drink (a soy/coconut iced latte), and he made it hot instead of iced. I don't like to be a pain with baristas, but the drinks here are just insanely expensive, so I asked him to remake it. He took the drink back from me, and right in front of me, poured the hot drink over ice. At that point, I didn't want to interact with someone so rude anymore, so I took it and left. Anyone who has been through food safety training as a barista knows that it violates health code to pour a hot drink over ice. So not only was I left with a watered down drink, it was potentially unsafe to consume. Last night, I paid $14 for two lattes and a cookie. Am I wrong in thinking that $14 entitles me to have my drink made correctly? read more

The service was horrible. The workers were rude and took forever. They took forever to cook my bagel and when they brought it out I discovered that it was burned to the point where I couldn't even bite into it. Also, I waited for like 20 minutes for my coffee to be ready and when I went to check on it, the man said that he thought someone else was getting it and walked away. Overall, the service and food were horrible and I would not recommend going here. read more
