Extremely impressed with Kick Butt Coffee! The store front is VERY inconspicuous, don't be fooled - once you enter this legendary venue you'll be transported into an insanely cool bar, full of awesome people, local color, and KICK BUTT ATMOSPHERE! This coffee shop is about 2 seconds away from my new house so while my boyfriend's family was in town helping him to unpack we decided to stop in and get some coffee. First thoughts: - The theme, while a bit overdone, was very fun. - The employees are not the exuberant and over the top ones I find at Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf or any other chain restaurant... YAY! I haven't had my coffee yet, that's why I'm here, I'm glad you're not bouncing around giving me a headache before I get my caffeine. - Mint Mocha? My two favorite things, yum! - Kung Fu Panda was playing in the back when we got there and there was live music. It seemed like a great place to come study or just hang out. - They don't skimp on the espresso. We all really enjoyed our coffee and I've been back several times since then. While I've seen others say the uniforms are a bit ridiculous I really think the whole thing is great - the kids I babysit love to come in with me which is way different than if I go to Starbucks where there's nothing for kids to look at! ++ They take Go Local! cards for 10% off?! What a great customer service experience I had here today! My boyfriend and I stopped by this place because we happened to drive by after getting our license plates and registration at the nearby tag office. He was in need of coffee and I needed coffee and breakfast. We ordered two coffees and I got an orange muffin. I know other Yelpers have commented about the price of the coffee, but my total for all of that was $8 and the regular sized coffees are quite large, so I think the prices are pretty reasonable. Anyway, I eat my muffins kind of weird (I pick around the edges and then eat the middle. Yeah, I don't know, either . . .), and when I got to the middle, it was gooey batter. Oops, it wasn't cooked quite long enough. No biggie, I just threw the rest away. Then, I noticed the QR code on the cup and the advertisement to win a $250 gift certificate if you scanned the code. I'm always up for contests, so I scanned it. I mentioned the undercooked muffin in the comments and within 2 hours, I had an email from Gregory, the manager, apologizing for the muffin and offering the next one on the house. Thanks KBC! I will definitely be back for that muffin and for more excellent coffee. read more

I haven't been to the new one at the triangle yet. I use to like the one on airport but the drinks are not as good as when they first opened. Well, if decor is what makes or breaks a coffeehouse for you, Kick Butt certainly delivers that. Or maybe you're looking for a cup of grounds, with a little coffee in it... they've got that covered too. Drip coffee worse than 7-11 (seriously guys, use a FILTER), horrible music/comedy open mics. The only coffeehouse in Austin with worse live music is Genuine Joe. That's saying a lot, cause that place is horrible. The staff always seems like they have something a lot more important than you going on. Style over substance. Hey, it's what Austin's all about these days, isn't it? Maybe to that end, Kick Butt is giving people what they want. Maybe I just have old-timers syndrome about "Austin-That-Was" or something. Close to my kid's school, check. Great coffee, check. Free Wi-Fi, check. Locally owned, check. Fresh made pizza, sandwiches, and pastries, bonus! To be honest, I've never tried their pizza or sandwiches since I've only been there in the morning but they sound really good. As I walked up to the counter today I noticed what appeared to be a fresh out of the oven cinnamon roll and could not resist. Oh yes, it was fresh from the oven and was very good. Great service! Nice people, very friendly & accommodating. But the coffee shop? Not so much... Despite the mixed reviews I thought I'd give it a try since I was in the area & had bought a living social deal. Living social, u get me every time!! I opened the door and a wall of stale air & funky closet/ moth ball scent hit me in the face. At first I though I'd opened the wrong door because the staff was in panda express attire, oh "kick butt, like Bruce lee, I get it now" Ok it's a themed coffee shop, I'll allow it. I went for a large mocha blended situation to bring to the hubby at work. I asked how many espresso shots it had, none. Frapes are made with ice coffee. Good to know but that's not ganna get the buzz on, so I added 2 shots of espresso to it. I sampled it on the drive & it was a delicious sugar mess of tastiness (but I can only imagine the calorie content has to be extreme) I got a small iced americano with almond syrup & rice milk. Small has 3 espresso shots. Wahoo! It sounded good but something was off... Like a sour tang of flavor that had no business in ice coffee. I couldnt place it, unusual almond syrup? Funky cup? I hope it wasn't the rice milk.....Eeeek! Not bad but if want something really good, like real really good? I could care less about atmosphere; music, dancing, martial arts, creative arts - whatever. I patronize an establishment to get what I need and no amount of frilly curtains or stand up comedy will encourage me to return if my basic needs are not met. I started out ordering a large latte once or twice a week from KBC but soon discovered that it was close to $7 and I rarely finished it so I quickly cut back to a small. Another employee picks up our coffee order and while I was satisfied with the flavor I always thought it was a little expensive even for the small at over $4. I thought, okay, they specialize in coffee, what do I know, so I kept having my coffees. Today we decided to try out the lunch menu and placed the order by phone using the non-priced online menu. Never ... let me make that perfectly clear, NEVER will I ever order anything from this place again. I mean, who do they think they are catering to? Location--less than favorable neighborhood near a defunct mall, and in a strip mall no less, in a working class area. Now adding a community college into the mix and this place charges $15.00 for a dammed cold cut sandwich? Newsflash, they are not an upscale restaurant no matter what they think ... and they are surrounded by fifty places to buy a $6.00 - $7.00 sandwich every bit as good as what they are putting out. Advice from me is, get pricing on everything before you commit. Three people at my work ate lunch today to the tune of $45.00 - three sandwiches, with chips and salsa as sides, two cookies and one small coffee and a 16 oz bottled diet coke. Still in shock. By the way - it might not hurt to get some heat sleeves that actually stay on the coffee cups. What a pain to always have to tape it in place. UPDATE TO OWNER RESPONSE I appreciate your prompt and courteous response to my review. Maybe I've watched too many episodes of Bar Rescue and sometimes it seems that so many conflicts could easily be resolved with forethought about location and target markets. Since yesterday I have read repeated reviews about the prices at KBC but it never occurred to me to check them beforehand as I am in retail and understand about competition and the value of being consistent with other companies that provide similar products and services. Nobody likes a nasty surprise, so when a customer complains about our pricing I can always respond with, we are competitive, you will not find a similar product cheaper anywhere else. If you feel your product has a higher value, maybe pricing on the web site would prevent the kind of shock that we went through when we picked up our lunch. Do you sell any sandwich for under $9? if so that would be good information to have beforehand. I don't think any of us paid less than that and we all ordered different things. You cannot always rely on the customer to ask for pricing nor can you rely on remembering to warn them about an unexpected high price. It's not necessary to treat us all to lunch, although the offer is appreciated. Your web site offers detailed information about your menu, if you could add pricing, that should resolve the issue for future customers. You guys are like right next to the blood bank, this is not a downtown bistro that caters to upper end customers. Who's Sifu and why is shameless self promo bad?!? We love this place. We only went because one of our friends takes fencing lessons nearby and doesn't wanna drive I35 back to S. Austin while her daughter is in training for a mere hour. Where's the reviews for I35? Think I'll find one. Anyway... we were up that way because we went to the really kick ass haunted house 'House of Torment' (which I should review soon because me and my 12yo daughter went partially through before she defied gravity and wrapped herself around my head like a cat screaming bloody murder before a zombi snuck us around the back to get out... she was positive death was upon us). Oh yeah, Kick Butt Coffee. True. My favorite part was the fact that they have a full bar and can put liquor in your tai chi. Brilliant and delicious. Their open mic was one of the best I've seen. We heard two new favorites that are new to Austin: The Greenlight Express and that other pop rock band from El Paso with the rad bass player. Waited quite a while to get my coffee since there was only one batista who also took the orders despite the fact that it's a café and one shoujd expect a morning rush (i entered the place at about 10am). By the time I got my coffee there were 8 people queuing. Had a medium size soy cappuccino with flavor. Nice that they offer non dairy milk. They had old looking gluten free chocolate dounouts but nothing vegan (unlike what was suggested by their menu). Coffee was given in a plastic cup though I wasn't going anywhere which is a real pitty. Coffee was way too hot and burn my tongue. Had a blueberry muffin as well- it wasn't fresh. I know I seem like a chump for rating two places five-stars in a row, but check it out: I can't help myself. Kick Butt Coffee rocked my face off last night. Every Monday night they have live music that... wait for it... doesn't suck. And it's not too loud. It's instrumental, a mix between funk and jazz that actually really works for a light, casual party atmosphere. I was just expecting a nice cup of coffee, you know? Additionally, you walk in there, you get yourself nice happy hour deals, scrumptious inventive cocktails, and full, free use of an in-house Wii if'n you're into gaming it up. My barista ("baristo" for a man?) was Naiman-- now there is a dude what knows how to rule the hospitality industry. Dude was straight making up new cocktails for me on the fly. Dude opened a beer for my friend, cut his hand from a beer bottle malfunction (New Belgium, we are calling you out), and made a hilarious joke about it. Never missed a beat. Also didn't serve the bloody beer. I highly recommend this place to anybody who likes coffee, alcohol, good chill music, video games, or funny customer service workers. I went in here to get 2 iced coffees and 2 pre-made sandwiches. I had been here before over the years and this time I noticed they have expanded, taking down a wall and taking the spot next door. It looks great. The vibe is hit or miss and the food is average but the cookies and iced coffee are great. However, something was different this time around. The prices are not good anymore. My 2 iced coffees to-go and 2 cellophane wrapped cold sandwiches came out to a whopping $24.51 I really thought the barista said my total was 14 something and we were talking when I was signing my credit card slip. As I was walking out it hit me; "did she say 24?" Lo and behold I looked at my receipt and it was 24 bucks. I returned to the counter and asked the barista how much the sandwiches were and she said "I don't know, like 6 something and the coffees like 4.50 or 5" I let it go in the moment but thought I'd share this here with the yelp community and my neighbors in Hyde Park and surrounding areas. Great food, pretty cool staff but L.A. prices on the food is not Austin cool. I won't return but solely for the over pricing. Good coffee, yummy pastries, pleasant staff, comfortable booths, and crisp red and black decor. What's not to like? There aren't tons of outlets, but the place wasn't ubercrowded the morning I was working there, so I had no problem. And you've got to love the martial arts theme. Kick Butt, indeed. I'm just a regular middle-aged female writer, and I especially appreciated not being treated like an intruder because I'm not a hipster wannabe and don't sport any tattoos. Not that I have anything against tattoos. Some of my best friends have tattoos (you know the shtick). But so many coffee joints are so into the whole too-cool-for-school thing that I wonder if they go to the city dump for their furniture. It's wonderful to find a place that is clean, well kept, and comfortable. This is one of my favorite coffee shops in Austin. Why -- the customer service and you get an E-normous cup of coffee!! I hadn't been to KBC in a while because I moved, but I was excited to stop by for a breakfast taco--which are super yummy. The owner was there and he was very welcoming and talked to me for a while. In the past I've been to a couple of their various music nights, and I think it's a great smaller venue to really connect with people and enjoy a more casual night out. The service was horrible. The workers were rude and took forever. They took forever to cook my bagel and when they brought it out I discovered that it was burned to the point where I couldn't even bite into it. Also, I waited for like 20 minutes for my coffee to be ready and when I went to check on it, the man said that he thought someone else was getting it and walked away. Long time customer of Kick Butt here. My husband and I have been hanging out at KB since June 2008! Since the expansion this has become THE PLACE to be! The venue is really awesome. If you haven't been in a while, you'll want to come check it out. My favorite drink is the iced caramel latte (made by Alyssa!). Unlike some other places, the drink is really smooth & has the perfect amount of sweet caramel. KB also has a pretty decent menu of food. The Mediterranean pizza is really yummy. I ask for extra toasted. The Tyler Durden sandwich is also really good. I get it with a Cesar side salad & a side of cha cha sauce for my sandwich (on toasts croissant). So good! Kick Butt has events every night of the week. The Thursday night music open mic is the best in town. Fantastic musicians & great crowd. And Dan serves up some mean drinks! The place is great, all the staff is extremely friendly. Unfortunately due to a series of events we will not be attending, promoting or performing at Kickbutt coffee anymore due to Mike. We recently performed with a touring band and we were told there will be a door person and sound guy and none was provided nor no reason why except for one person being sick. It was disorganized and we were expected to run our own sound with unfamiliar equipment. The touring act was mistreated and insulted by Mike and it showed how Kickbutt doesn't care about touring and local musicians. We will not be recommending this place for future acts. We hope this issue gets resolved. It sucks to down such a cool place because of one person.
