every time I go back to the I HAVE to Khan's grill. they have about three locations all throughout the valley, but my favorite location is the one in pharr. The service here is so quick, and I've never had to wait more than 10 minutes to be seated, even on the weekends. this location has ample parking and a lot of seating inside. I always go with combo number one which comes with one protein bowl, and one veggie bowl. I'd like to grab the vermicelli noodles and stack on some veggies like broccoli, onions, chives, corn, carrots, and mushrooms. For my protein, I usually just go with beef and the seasoned chicken, but I've heard great things about their sausage and seafood options. They have a seasoning bar, which I like to put peanuts on the beef and everything seasoning as well. Once you have your veggies and protein ready to go, you'll go to their grill section into the next number and someone will take care of you there. I always plated to go because the portions are huge and my go to is there fried rice. Definitely recommend adding an egg onto your plate. I also grab a side of eggrolls with my dish. The quality the food is amazing every time. It's very consistent. The sauces pair of delicious with the proteins. and everything is just so well seasoned. The concept is fast and efficient. SERVICE- the service was the worst part. The waitress was very nice but the cooks are the big issue. They seem annoyed by the customers and don't allow you to take time to make your selections of oil and sauces. So in the end he added whatever he wanted. Including a spicy sauce that made it way too spicy to eat. One of the cooks didn't allow a father to help his child make selections about the sauces so he chose for the kid. It is totally irresponsible. Specially because he doesn't know what the child might be allergic to. The manager got involved and tried to defend the obvious mistakes and in the end agreed with us that it was not right. But to be honest leadership starts from the top, the waiters act this way because they are allowed to. They need new management and new cooks. AMBIANCE- the ambiance is not bad but the whole service experience made it uncomfortable to be there. I would like to give this place he benefit of the doubt. I have never eaten at Kahns before, but I've heard it mentioned from time to time. As I walked in, I was greeted by a very nice host. She was eager to show us the ropes and asked us if we had been to a Kahns before. We said no, and since the restaurant was practically empty at the time, she walked is down the line and explained the different colors bowls (green for veggies, red for meat). She did give us a warning that if the bowls were overfilled, we would get charged extra. Good to know. It feels like a buffet style, but it isn't. You get in a line, put veggies and pasta in a large green bowl and meat in a small red bowl. Everything in the bowl is raw. You then take your two bowls to a seasoning section and apply the seasoning you want. All things have explanations as to how it will affect its preparation. Upon adding seasoning, you then take your bowls to a giant kitchen area where several visible cooks will take your bowls and cook them for you. You will get asked what kind of oil you want first. A menu high up in the wall will show you the options. Then, towards the completion of your cooked meal, you will be asked what kind of sauce do you want. Again, refer to the menu for the sauce varieties. My pasta was undercooked and some of it was soft while the rest was still crunchy. It wasn't cooked long enough. The meat was great, though. O asked for olive oil and sweet orange sauce, which made my meal sweet. Personally, it was too much sauce that they put on their. Had I known, I would have said, "easy on the sauce." A second reason for the star deduction is that I was taking pictures of the food and menus for future Yelpers to enjoy and plan ahead of time. However, a manager approached me and told me I couldn't be taking pictures. He then wanted to know why I was taking pictures. I told him it was for a Yelp review to bring more awareness to his restaurant. I asked him if he knew what Yelp was. He said yes, but that if we wanted to take pictures that we needed to contact corporate. I found that odd, but it's not my business nor do I manage the place, so I was respectful enough to follow suit. I may give the place a second chance. Khan's Grill is and has always been a great spot to grab a great freshly cooked meal. I'm a big fan of their "prep-it-yourself" style of dining. It might take a few tries before you put together a mix you'll enjoy. This is how it goes: First you grab two bowls; one for your pasta and vegetables, and one smaller one for your meats. Fill both to the top with whatever you'd like but don't overfill to avoid extra charges. Second, you make a quick stop at the seasonings station. Here you add the flavor to your creation. Choose from curry, pepper, garlic, lemon-pepper, paprika, sesame seeds, peanuts, fajita mix, etc. Then, you head on to the grill and place your plate on the numbered spots of the grill countertop. There the friendly cooks will ask you for what type of oil or butter you'd like and which sauces you want on your platter. From here, it's all down hill as you choose from fried or steamed rice and wether you'd like to eat in or to go. I'm always satisfied here at Khans Grill. It's easy to recommend a restaurant like this one. Will keep inviting friends here for dinner and lunch. read more

Where exactly is Mongolia? I am not the best at geography but I wonder if they have Mongolian grills on every corner and if so, I think I need to go visit. These kind of places are very hit or miss due to quality of vegetables and meat. Khan's has never disappointed. I like that they give you two different bowls (one for veggies & one for meat). The choices of vegetables is endless and always fresh. Even the meat they offer ranges from turkey to tofu. Right before you get to cooking your food, there are tons of spices that you can add (and peanuts which give the food a lil crunch so make sure to throw some into your bowl). Sauce choice: get "house" no question. It comes with a combo of sauces and you choose how much chili-garlic you want in your food. You get fried or steamed rice and then this buttery/toasted roll on top of it all. The cooks & waitstaff are always friendly, fast and efficient which makes the experience that much better! This place was unexpected and amazing. My coworker and I stumbled upon it accidentally while trying to eat at the next door restaurant that was closed. What a find! It's located in a strip center and doesn't look like much. When you walk in, you're given instructions to take one white bowl and one red bowl and fill them at the salad/meat bar. The white bowl is larger and used for noodles and veggies and the small red bowl is used for raw meat and/or fish. Once each is full, you add spices to it then take it to the "bar" and the watch the guys cook it, Mongolian style. They ask you to pick an oil and then sauces and once it's done you can add either fried or white rice and a roll. It's a TON of food and only $8! The place reminds me of "You are cooks" where you basically make your own plate but watch someone cook it. It was delicious, cheap, and fun. I HIGHLY recommend going here! read more

I love Khans but this one wow. Didn't get greeted and attended right. The host/lady had attitude plus our server took a long time with our drinks we ordered water which is not that hard to get. Also it wasn't that busy for her to take long. Furthermore as the cook handles me my food I see that it's a little burned. I was like okay let me try it before I say it's burned. After I tasted my food I'm like no all the food was burned I didn't want to say anything to anyone so I just left my plate and paid. One things for sure not going to recommend coming to this Khans. Oh man have things changed since they first started! The new location is big, spacious, and clean! As usual the service is great, and the food is exactly what you want... because you make it. Word of caution beware of the soy sauce it can result in an extremely salty plate. For those of you who are intimidated. You walk-in tell the waitress your drink order, they'll tell you which table you'll be seating at. Then you pick up a red bowl (for protein) or a green for pasta and veggies. Then you walk down the line and fill them up! There are also spices you can add in a different section. You then walk up to the grill part tell them which oil you want (olive, butter, canola, sesame, etc), then they start cooking. In the middle of the cooking they ask for your sauce preference (I do orange and chili garlic, but there are tons.) then for the finale your rice selection (steamed, fried, or brown). This is a valley staple, and everyone who I've introduced to it loves it. The prices are extremely reasonable and portions are huge. read more

I never feel like it's enough food when I'm putting the raw toppings in my bowl but once it's done being cooked and I eat sit down to eat, I can barely finish half of my plate. There's so many different vegetables, seasonings, etc to choose from. I love the fact that you can even choose the type of oil you want to use. You're making the food to your liking and taste so if you don't like the taste of something, there's really no one else to blame, lol. Yes, I am aware that giving Khan's any fewer than 5 stars is the Valley is blasphemy. Please hear me out before calling me with death threats. We'll start with the bright side. The food is delicious in that gooey, nasty, I-can't-believe-I-actually-like-this, Big Mac sort of way. The food is certainly plentiful. You get about 13 standard serving sizes of rice or pasta with every plate. The food is also cheap! What can be so bad about lots of delicious cheap food?? The answer is Salmonella. Room-temperature raw beef, chicken and pork out in the open, and only laughably covered by cough guards. I witnessed people serve themselves chicken and shrimp and then put the chicken back! Allergies, people! This place is a nightmare for anyone with seafood, peanut or MSG allergies. I would be totally fine with this place if the cooking process actually killed off the bacteria. But it doesn't. I have been to Khan's three times. I have been violently ill three times. Immediately following my visits. I say, give Khan's a try. Hopefully you have a steel stomach that can savor the deliciousness while simultaneously fending itself from foodborne illness. If not, well, I've failed three times and still haven't died yet... This place completely fails to treat the customer like they are wanted there by making you wait for your meal at the counter. Why must I stand and wait for them to cook my order when I can be sitting down and having a conversation with my friends or family at a table? It would be much easier if we were able to grab a seat at a table and would also create less havoc and congestion around the grill. Do you seat yourself and the waitress comes and slams a ticket down at your table? Anyone ever just stood there at the door? If this were a different part of the world - or Texas, for that matter - where people were actually considerate and knew a teensy bit about food safety, I'd feel more comfortable, but in an area where children run rampant with no supervision and the adults are mostly just bigger versions of children, your raw food will most certainly be tossed in and out of bowls as choices are made. Raw meats that are dropped can sit on the counters for a while before being cleaned - not good. The variety of sauces is amazing. I (and I may be the only one in McAllen) get Hoisin every time. For those who haven't tried it, it's essentially house sauce rolled into one dark sweet sauce. Food, cooked in butter of course. My biggest complaint. The one gripe I have that completely prevents me from going higher than two stars - you really have no say over the done-ness of your food, even the beef. Granted, given that it's just been sitting out for God-knows how long and should probably be well-done anyway, I don't like well-done beef. This is typical of most Valley eateries, though, where "bien cocido" (well done) seems to be all anyone understands or appreciates. How anyone rates this place less than 4 stars is beyond me! Perhaps they don't know how to maximize their dish. The Edinburg location was a great addition and upgrade to the McAllen location on Nolana boasting a larger grill and seating area with a modern look. Not to mention a bar, The Thirsty Bronc, that is connected next door which has Modelo on tap! I have tried Ghengis Grill and was not impressed after growing up with Khans. I'm sure the other mongolian grill place (Ron Fu's?) is also inferior to Khans deliciousness! To say RUDE is an understatement. Worst service ever from the actual manager of the restaurant. TOM I believe his name is. As I paid for my plate I asked the cashier why they were charging me extra veggies given that I just had an all veggie plate with tofu as my protein source. The manager was in the cash register next to the cashier and he started responding that I must have filled the bowl to the brim which I did not. I told him that I only used the green bowl for the noodles and veggies and the red bowl for the tofu. And he said "Oh, that's why sweetie." Sweetie? He said as long as I grab a red bowl it automatically counts as extra veggies... I responded that the TOFU is labeled in RED so I used a RED bowl for it. To which his response was that they messed up on the colors and that everyone in the world knows TOFU is a vegetable. I've been vegetarian for 5 years, I think I know what a vegetable is. I also told him that I remember when the TOFU sign was GREEN but they changed it to RED so I used that bowl because that's what a normal person that follows directions would do. He was so disrespectful to say the very least because he was screaming at me in front of other customers that were waiting to pay for their meal. The whole time I was wondering when or where I told him I refused to pay for the meal for him to get all defensive and start raising his voice at me in front of everyone like that. All I did was ask the cashier why they were charging me extra veggies and he decided to join in on the conversation and be disrespectful. I felt so embarrassed for the young lady that was the cashier because you could tell this happened frequently as she just looked down and said she was really sorry about what had happened. I don't know who the owner of this restaurant is but I would consider a quick change in management ASAP, take it as advice from one business owner to another.
