After a very challenging travel trip to this area, the discovery of 492 BBQ around the corner from my hotel was a gift. The pulled pork BBQ was exactly on point with its smoke flavor and being tender. The sausage links had snap and just enough smoke. The brisket was tender and full of flavor to just what I wanted. Even the beans were spot on for a very tired and hungry BBQ fan. I look forward to returning to the area for work and are moving 492 BBQ to the top of my places to be sure to return to. read more

I was in Edinburgh Tx. Decided to stop by this place instead of Rudy's BBQ. The server was friendly and knew the menu well. I ordered the 3 taco combo with corn Tortillas. One was brisket, pulled pork and regular sausage with a side of beans. I loved the smoke flavor of the pulled pork and all the meats were moist and juicy. The beans could use more flavor. It was supposed to be to be charro beans but was missing ingredients that could be the reason it was bland. Also ordered the strawberry lemonade and it was delicious. It is served in a large mason jar. Ambience is casual and yes it is a bit chilled inside but with this Texas heat it is understandable. I will not complain about that. This is good bbq. The brisket was seasoned well, good texture and a nice bark. The sausage had good flavor and a good casing, not too chewy. If I had anything that would keep it from a 5 star were the sides I had. The beans were flavored well, I would just like a thicker roux. Also, the mac and cheese tasted wonderful. It was creamy and well portioned, however it had a smidge of a gritty taste at times. I would definitely be back but try new sides. read more

I've asked the question before, but it bears repeating: "Is it even possible to get 'bad' barbecue in the state of Texas?" Every time I'm back in the Lone Star state, I need to get my fix of 'cue since there is some essence that gets lost when the art of "slow and low smoking" of meats leaves the Southwest and migrates East and North of the Mississippi River. And for sure, it's difficult if not damn near impossible to find decent barbecue in the DC area. For an establishment that has been in business for over 15 years (since 2009), 492 BBQ has a criminally low review count. So allow me to add my ringing endorsement for some of the best 'cue you can find in the Rio Grande Valley. 492 is a not a fancy restaurant with tile flooring and multiple dining areas which have various seating configurations. But the place is clean and well lit, which is always appreciated. I was warmly greeted by the hostess and shown to a table, where my friendly server Christina suggested the three meat platter. Any good TX 'cue joint is judged on by one cut of meat and that is of course, brisket. The brisket at 492 is superior! There is a thick bark resulting from hours of slow cooking over mesquite wood coals. And you won't need any of the slightly sweet sauce on the table, since any good brisket can stand on it's own with just salt, pepper, and smoke. The ribs were also tasty, although I slightly preferred the pork vs. the beef short rib cut. Both the pork and beef ribs were "fall of the bone" tender, but perhaps I just like the texture and taste from the fattier pork. Both versions were still darn good. Sides were delicious...of course. The Mac and cheese was made in-house and from scratch ingredients. It was creamy, well seasoned, and didn't have that artificial taste or weird fluorescent color from box mixes. I'm glad I went with Christina's recommendation and tried the rice/beans combo. I've not sampled something like this, but the slow cooked pinto beans were added atop fluffy rice to make an almost "stew like" dish with pieces of meat mixed in. Really good! Service was attentive throughout the meal with water glasses being filled when empty, and take home boxes offered since there was waay too much food to be consumed at one sitting. My 3 meat sampler, with just water and no dessert, came to about $28 with tax and tip. A bargain really since I had the other half of the meal for lunch the next day. read more

I'm always on the lookout for a new place to get some BBQ in the 956, and luckily 492 BBQ just opened up. So this is t a typical BBQ joint where you walk up to the counter, order your food and take it to a table. It's a standard restaurant where you sit first, get your menus, and order. Menu had great options, combos and one of my favorites-tacos! I ordered a two meat combo with short ribs and sliced brisket, potato salad, beans and a brisket taco. But being that this is the RGV, beans were charro beans and I chose tortillas rather than white bread. Food came out pretty quick and it all looked great. The charro beans had good flavor, and the potato salad was good but I could tell it came from a commissary. However, the meat was cold, not even like warm, and I was anxious to give it a taste. Short ribs were flavorful, almost like a Thai flavor sauce was lathered on the ribs, and it was really tender but for the price it was a thinly sliced of two short ribs not more than 2 inches a piece. Brisket was also tender but cold as was the brisket in the taco. Unfortunately my party was in a hurry so I didn't send it back for a reheat, but if it were to be served warm then the meat would have been fantastic. read more

The place is really nice and clean. Has a really cool modern look. The staff was kind and quick to service us. The brisket was delicious, but the sides weren't that great. Charro beans and rice were pretty bland. My husband got Mac and cheese and potato salad as his sides and he agreed that his sides were also bland and the meat was delicious. read more

I'm a bbq snob and it takes a lot to impress me. 492 BBQ exceeded my expectations greatly. The baby back ribs were smoked perfectly - fall off the bone tender with a wonderful 'bark' full of flavor. In fact, I'd rate these in the top ten ribs I have ever had in a barbecue restaurant...and I've eaten ribs hundreds of times across the USA in a 60 year period. Restaurant is located on a small mall and the smell of barbecue that hits you once you walk in is stuff from heavens. I like that they set up a big sink for hand washing near the restrooms - something necessary for hand held food. The staff was attentive to our questions and requests. They recommended the short ribs, brisket and the green beans. We also got pulled pork and some coleslaw. Everything was really good but the short ribs are amazing. I would say even get a double order. The green beans are made on butter with onions also great. I wish I had pictures but the food was gone in minutes! read more

Most recently tried the lamb ribs, and they were excellent. I did request that they toast them on the outside and the flavor was bar non-awesome. Also highly recommend the pulled pork and cheddar jalapeño sausage. read more

We ate at the original location and loved the rustic feel. The chicken and pulled pork were very good. Juicy and not over smoked. The brisket was cooked very well, but was sliced a little thin for my preference. The bbq sauce was very good and the beans were fantastic. Our server, Elizabeth, was a rock star.
