    Trying the Nashville hot chicken
    Will H.

Apparently their Nashville hot chicken tenders are all the rage on the social media these days. Yelp is the only one of those platforms I use these days, but my boo uses the others and had an interest in trying this nationalized attempt at a regional chicken speciality. Following a stop in lovely Allentown, we continued east on 195 to end up in this dystopian area off the highway near great adventure. We didn't hit this KFC simply for the adventure factor or attraction to the sprawl of ocean county (or is this Monmouth still? Who knows). We also came here because they were the only store out of others we tried that actually answered their phone! Not only did they answer, they confirmed that yes indeed, they have the trendy, sauce-slathered and now in a supply chain shortage poultry we so desired. Accompanying our Nashville tenders was another overhyped, suddenly trendy item: the chicken sandwich! This revolutionary concept is back at KFC (did it ever leave?) and their version is quite decent. I ordered mine sans Mayo and didn't even eat most of the bun, but the chicken tasted fresh, crispy and had the colonel's famous 11 herbs & spices (you mainly taste black pepper) within. I enjoyed it, but the Popeyes iteration is superior. However it goes without saying that KFC's version blows McDonald's out of the water. Another surprise: the biscuits here were fresh, buttery and soft! While I haven't been to a KFC in years, their biscuits are usually a bit stale tasting, I guess the lard hardens up after a while? At 180 calories a pop, these were worthwhile! As for the reason we came? It too is worth a try. The "Nashville" hot sauce has some cayenne powder in it, and while it packs some heat, you'll be OK. I'd say it's maybe 3/10 on the "will I drip sweat and burn my mouth" scale. We opted for ranch dipping sauce and it complements the heat very nicely. One star deducted because they charge 15 cents each for additional sauces. We wanted to try the "KFC sauce," no idea what it is, maybe a chick fil a sauce knock off? Well, we still don't know, because they forgot to deliver the product while stealing our 30 hard earned cents. Drive through line was too long to make it worth the time value of money. All in all, give this KFC a try if you haven't been in a while and have a hankering for some poultry. I think their location near great adventure ensures a fresh product that doesn't sit for too long. We'd make the schlep from Bordentown again if that says something.

For…read moreweeks, cars have lined up in the shoulder of Route 33 like pilgrims on a fried chicken crusade, all of them seeking enlightenment in a red and yellow shrine called Dave's Hot Chicken. Naturally, I had to see what the fuss was about. I ordered takeout because the cars stretched past the entrance way like a metal conga line led by hunger and curiosity . The object of my investigation was Dave's Sliders with fries. The sliders arrived on little potato buns, as if each were the pride of a humble Idaho farmer, topped with kale slaw, pickles, and Dave's sauce. And reader, they were beautiful. Everything worked in harmony. The crisp of the chicken, the brightness of the slaw, the subtle rebellion of the pickles. I chose the "medium" spice level, which turned out to be about as dangerous as a well-mannered librarian. Next time I will go "hot," maybe even "reaper," because if I am going to suffer, I would rather it be for art or poultry. Now, as for the mac and cheese: tragedy, pure and simple. It tasted as though it had been boiled in a space-age pouch, the kind of food that might be served in the afterlife if the afterlife were a public-school cafeteria. It was mac and cheese that had given up on its dreams. Still, the name of the place is Dave's Hot Chicken, not Dave's Existentially Redeemed Macaroni. The chicken was excellent, and that is what matters. So I will give Dave's four stars out of five, because perfection is a myth, and because next time I intend to burn just a little brighter.

He knew the menu inside and out, gave great recommendations, and pointed us toward the Pink Beans. Absolutely delicious. Honestly, I could eat those by themselves and be happy. We ordered the 1/2 rack of charred ribs and a Cuban from the Combos menu, with yellow rice and peas, pink beans, and black beans on the side. Every bite was flavorful and satisfying. The ribs were falling off the bone, tender, savory, and seasoned flawlessly. The Cuban was also solid, and the sides pulled everything together perfectly. The food and service were fantastic, and the prices were very reasonable for the quality and portions. Only thing missing? Mac and cheese and cornbread. If they added those, I'd probably be there right now. I'd definitely go back, and I'd absolutely recommend it. If you stop by, ask for Brandon and tell him this review brought you in for lunch. As someone with a gluten allergy, I was a little nervous at first, but the grilled nuggets are a total lifesaver, and they even have broccoli as a side. I went with the medium grilled combo and paired it with the Smokin' J's BBQ sauce -- the nuggets were juicy, packed with flavor, and incredibly fresh. The portion was generous enough that I brought home leftovers for later. I also tried their homemade blueberry lemonade, it was refreshing. For anyone who can enjoy gluten, the wings and nuggets looked amazing -- and the sauce options alone could spark a serious debate! Service was quick and friendly. It wasn't crowded when we walked in, but I can definitely picture this spot getting busy during peak hours. The staff was fun to joke with, and the place was clean with plenty of parking. It's a great spot to get tasty food fast. Downsides: limited seating, so not ideal for larger groups wanting to dine in, and no bathroom on-site. Being part of a strip mall, though, you've got other stores nearby if needed. If I lived closer, this would definitely be a staple spot. Highly recommend for anyone looking for flavorful, fast, gluten-friendly nuggets!
