This isn't the same place that I remember growing up. I drove 40 mins while in town and it wasn't worth it. They got my order wrong. But you know jersey, you have to use a jug handle to go around so I said nvm. When I got home, to heat the food up, it literally had the foulest smell. I ordered cheeseburgers. Belly bombers, sliders, White Castles....whatever you call them they are still the same addicting little burgers I grew up eating and when the craving hits (which is about 2-3 times a year) I must indulge. Things have changed from the White Castles of old. You can no longer stare at the giant glass window facing out into the restaurant to watch those thin square burgers cooked in front of your eyes on the giant grill then covered with those delicious perfectly tiny diced sauteed onions, a slice of pickle and perhaps some cheese, then topped with their proprietary bun until the steam from the grill infuses it with the burger and onion flavors. Oh, and I also remember the tubular plastic thing hanging down from the ceiling that was used to squirt just the right amount of ketchup on each burger. Finally, each burger is placed into a perfectly sized box (yellow for cheese and blue for regular). Today, everything is done behind the scenes but I assure you the original burgers taste very much the same way I remember them and they still come in the same boxes. White Castle also offers an Impossible plant based slider and it's pretty good. The first iteration when it was released was a hand formed round one and didn't really hit the mark. However, they made some changes to make it more like the original by making it square and a little thinner. My only issue is that they use a different bun for it and it's not as good as the original slider bun. Additionally, although I appreciate that the impossible burger is thicker and has more meat I still think it should be made just as thin as the original. Burger King has an Impossible Whopper and you would be hard pressed to tell it apart from the original. This is not the case with White Castle and I'm not sure why. Anyway, I did order both burgers (the original and the Impossible) as well as a few different cheese options (jalapeno cheddar, smoked cheddar, regular american) and all were good. They also have the best onion rings around. Although, I'm not a fast food fan I have to admit that White Castle is still one of my guilty pleasures that I'll continue to enjoy when the crave hits. Tip - if this pandemic ever ends you may want to try White Castle for Valentines Day. Yes, you read that right!! A long standing tradition by reservation only White Castle decorates their restaurants and provides waiter service on Valentines day making it both the most cheesiest and also fun and unique experience. I don't know about runs to White Castle after 2:00 am when the bars close. Never tried their sliders as a hangover cure. Haven't done a secret visit to pick up and devour their double cheeseburger brick packs tight in their white paper sacks. I don't relate to any of those attitudes and secret handshake pleasures. For me, White Castle has been a fun place to go for delicious onion juiced square burgers with holes since I was a kid and my father took me to my first one in Bayside, Queens, NY. We drove all the way out from Washington Heights, Manhattan. I was 8. The only thing he told me was that, "It is time to find out what great delicacies there are in America." He was so right. That first bite. My dad watching me to see my reaction, and breaking into a huge snorting guffaw when my eyes opened wide and I gasped in total pleasure. After that, the pilgrimage to Bayside became a monthly ritual. It was our bonding experience. My older sister never felt it. But, my friends came along sometimes and became part of the White Castle Club. When we moved to New Jersey, my father promised there were more WCs in the Garden State to encourage me that we weren't moving away from civilization. When my son was 8, we drove from Bucks County, PA, to Route 1 in Middlesex County, NJ, to introduce him to the glory of these sliders. It was over an hour away, but this right of passage had to be continued with the next generation. We continue this tradition as often as possible now that he is 18 and about to go to college. He assures me that any school he attends must have a White Castle with 50 miles. I believe him. He has a map on his bedroom wall with all of them across the Eastern USA pinned. So, when I found this store on RT 9 in Howell, NJ, on my way to a meeting, I had to stop and taste the flavor of my childhood and reminisce over a couple of double jalapeno sliders. When I was driving in NJ, I saw White Castle sign on the exit sign. I had it a long time ago so I kinda forgot the taste of the food here. Also, my friend never had it and he wanted it because of Harold and Kumar. So we had to take a quick detour to visit this place. Due to Covid, the dining in area is blocked. No big deal. We got the share-a-meal no.8 (10 sliders, 20 chicken rings, and fries) and clam strips. The food was okay. I forgot how thin the patty in the slider is. The clam strip was pretty good but there were more fried doughs without clams. Overall, it was not bad and I mean you should try it if you have ever watched Harold and Kumar. Service was atrocious. Went to the drive through and had two cars in front of me...TWO, not twelve, not twenty two. First car pulls up after ordering and it took the geniuses inside five minutes minutes just to get the second car's order. I placed my very simple order next and pulled up and waited...and waited...and waited. After a total of seventeen minutes (AFTER ordering) at the drive through I finally had my food. Four people working the back area of the kitchen...and seventeen minutes at the drive thru-completely unacceptble. Why did I wait? I have no idea...especially since we passed two more White Castle's driving North on Rt 9. This is a review of the food. Their new meatless burger and cheese curds were the only edible things. I gave them an extra star for them. Their regular burger is just awful. I'm unsure how they are still in business. I could see them stop selling meat burgers instead because it's actually a much better tasting product. I stopped in this White Castle and took a chance. I am so thankful that my local White Castle did not make me regret eating this more then I could have. I got the for burger meal with fries, and 6 chicken rings. Everything was fresh. I enjoyed it very much until the belly bombs did what they do. At least it wasn't stale food and made me regret eating this at two am. Thanks White Castle for being fresh at 2 am. Oh, White Castle. If there was ever a king of the indigestion kingdom, he would surely reside in a place such as this. Let me get this out of the way, and please don't hate me for saying it: White Castle doesn't make good hamburgers. There, I said it. But don't fret, because while they don't make "hamburgers", per-say, they do make "White Castles / Sliders", which I place into an entirely different category altogether. These miniature cousins of the humble hamburger are downright delicious, and I can easily go through a sack of 6 of these suckers before realizing how much of a pig I'm being. If you've never had one, the sliders (we'll call them burgers for simplicity's sake) are a really different take on the classic burger. They take a thin meat patty, throw it on top of a bed of onions, and steam the ever loving heck out of the meat, the buns, everything. The result is a really soft, sometimes soggy, onion-y burger that's 2 inches on all sides, and goes down easier than they should. As if the mini burgers weren't weird enough, the chicken nuggets here are in ring form, and aptly named "chicken rings" - also very tasty. Sure, your stomach may hate you for the next 3-6 hours, and your significant other may refuse to sit near you due to the sheer stench of the onions, but if you have "the crave", all of that doesn't matter. Free refills at this location is a huge plus, since you'll likely be ingesting more bread than is healthy. Quick service, clean location, both a plus. Open 24 hours too, so if you're feeling extra slobbish, you can roll out of bed at 3AM to stuff your face full of burgers. read more

However, the holy grail of all White Castle sliders: the garlic cheese and mushroom. They're in limited supply when they come out, but OH MY GOD. Amazing. In every possible way, AMAZING. Once upon a time, there was a little, castle shaped burger joint which was dedicated to feeding the masses of late night revellers who needed to eat on their way home from their evenings of debauchery. The burgers were very inexpensive, hand pressed, cooked with onions, ordered by the dozen, and easily eaten with four bites each. Then the castle grew up to become a depressing corporate empire which serves cardboard faux-meat which is pressed to 1/8 inch and flavored with greed. It's a sad story. I really don't favor writing negative reviews and I think this is only the 3rd time I've given a 2 star review; but sometimes it's necessary. The food, regretably, can only be described as 'food' in the loosest of terms; it was awful. If you get the urge for White Castle, fight it. read more

I like White Castle. I mean, c'mon - they aren't kidding about that "crave" thing and you know it. Sometimes you just *need* a few sliders. And unlike some people I know who need to coddle their delicate digestive systems, White Castle has never put me in the bathroom for an hour after eating there. Whenever I go, I always end up ordering more than I should. The burgers are small, but they aren't *that* small - I need to stop ordering 6 or 8 of them at a time. I like the variety, though. I want a bacon cheeseburger, and a jalapeno cheeseburger, and a chicken ring sandwich, and what's this? They have chili cheese fries now? Sold. This particular location is always clean, and unlike some other White Castles, doesn't have the workers behind an unsettling cage of bulletproof glass. Feels a little more welcoming without that, you know? But despite actually enjoying their food, and despite the fact it's not a bad value for fast food, I can't bring myself to click higher than 3 stars. I do like the food, and I never regret eating there, but there's not a single item on the menu that doesn't taste better in a full-size version somewhere else. This is probably one of the most creepiest white castles I have ever been to. They were really stingy with the ketchup. Also, there were multiple English speaking Americans at this location yet they have the one minority who barely speaks English taking our order while the other English speaking employees were just staring at us like a deer in a headlight.
