Came here because Checker's on rt 9, Howell closed permanently. First time visit here. Never see any traffic or cars here but decided to give it a try. $3.00 more for hot dog, med coke & fries. $12.10. Hot dog was short. Didn't see them cook the hot dog, but it appeared bolied & not grilled; not really hot, either. The place has a short counter, a few tables and is filthy. Waited quite awhile for my order (not becaise they were busy) so I got a chance to see it while I was waiting. Sorry, this will be my first & last purchase. Good luck to you, though. read more

Writing this review after I went a month ago or so here, food was great but I haven't been able to get out of my head the fact that one of the employees, a girl with long black hair and gauge earrings making a weird comment to the guy in the back about her co-worker, dropping the name of this co-worker even. This co-worker also happens to be my friend. I found this experience pretty unprofessional and off-putting so I'm writing this a month or so later because I genuinely can't stop thinking about it and need to get it out. First of all, I haven't been to Stewart's root beer in howell in a while, but I had to go to have some test done at the hospital and on the way back, I wanted a hot dog (& also one for my pets to share) so I stopped at Stewart's on my way home. The place was banging and there was a lot of people there, there were only two people working ! and they were non stop.... Very impressive ! The line cook was consistently changing his gloves and if the front end manager/waitress had a spare moment she would assist the line cook , she also was taking orders and delivering orders to the car hop !! Skip the food get the float. We were greeted when we entered by two employees who were the only ones there at the time. The tables were clean but the counter was dirty. Unfortunately they didn't have most of what we tried to order from their menu. No gravy for the fries, mushrooms or zucchini sticks and stopped asking for things after that. Regular hot dog, cheese fries, Mac and cheese bites and root beer floats. The fryer stopped working briefly while we were waiting. The fried items were burnt and the dogs were nothing special. Stewarts is one of those places I always pass by but never went in. It looks like a truck stop and it certainly feels like one too. They even have car hop service which is old school... all you have to do is honk twice. I ordered the jumbo chilli cheese dog and it was legit. It is sloppy to eat but loved the flavors. The regular dog with sauerkraut got a little soggy in the bag so look out for that. The onion rings were also sneaky good too. Place is kind of divey but what do you expect?! I enjoyed my meal there and washed it down with a Stewarts root beer. Old school spot that hits the spot. I would come back! read more

I'm sure everyone in the food industry is trying their damnest to present the best possible situation for their diners. This was the case here at Stewart's. The car hop is still in practice today, as I approached an empty parking spot a few afternoons ago. Something quick, before my tennis match 2hrs hence. The masked server, a high schooler at most, presented a tray with a menu and condiments. My only problem was the damn window. NOTE: Be careful you don't hit the window button too long or bam, all what's on the tray will be on the ground. It almost happened. A bacon burger with jalapeños and a cream soda appeared in 10 minutes. Everything went smoothly. Good tasting for a chain that's been around since 1923. read more

Maybe I'm just in the wrong decade when it comes to Stewart's. In my adolescent fantasy it's supposed to be a throwback joint where I can hook up with Richie, Ralph Malph and Potsie while we crank the Duke of Earl and cruise chicks in a Chevy Nomad with some really righteous fuzzy dice. Then I wake up and all I can remember was a really tasty root beer choked down by a very mediocre burger and fries - not to mention a very vivid reminder about the distinction between nostalgia and just plain old. I don't know if it's me or Stewart's but one of us has definitely jumped the shark. You roll into this place off of Route 9 and... nothing. Just a dilapidated burger stand and some decrepit benches. They claim to be a mid-century Car Hop but I saw virtually no cars and very little hop. Like I said, their signature root beer was frosty and delicious but my cheeseburger tasted like it was grilled in Arthur Fonzarelli's Brylcreem. A meat-like orb swimming in a pool of greasy kids stuff and a side of listless fries. Stewart's was a real let down and a one and doner - not my Happiest Day and definitely not perfectamundo. I fricken love this place. Yes it's usually a wait and yes the menus are sticky but the food is fantastic and the people who work there are just lovely and hardworking. The Stewart burger is my favorite-- bbq, bacon, onion ring, with the standard cheeseburger fair. They also have a slammin Impossible burger. Totally vegan. The waffle fries with the Cajun seasoning are vegan too. The cold mugs of icy root beer is the perfect compliment to the meal. This place might have the best burgers in town. No wonder it's hopping on a Friday night after all these years. read more

I guess I'm suffering from memories of things long ago. Yup, growing up I lived close to a Stewarts Root Beer Stand. It was awesome! Loved everything about Stewarts. Wife and I decided to grab some dinner here. Something basic. Walked in and received a friendly welcome. Place was empty (Not a good sign on a Saturday night at dinner time). We proceed to the dinning area and found the only table that did not need to have the crumbs wiped off. Both the cook and the server were sitting at the counter checking what ever they check on their cell phones. The server did come over and took our order after a few minutes. While waiting for our order we noticed that the ketchup and mustard squeeze bottles were crusty at the nozzles and the actual bottles were dirty. Floor needed to be swept. Place looked run down and messy. Employees still checking their cell phones. Hamburgers and hot dogs arrived. Burgers were burned. Hot dogs were not so good. French fries looked like we got the bottom of the bag. Nothing longer than an inch. No followup by the server. Gotta check that cell phone. My Stewarts food memories were dashed on the rocks of disappointment. Their food used to be excellent! What happened? The root beer was excellent! Came in a paper cup with lots of ice. I guess the frosted mug that Stewarts was famous for is long gone. Dashed again!!! So putting all the memories aside, other than a really tasty root beer this Stewarts location is a dud. Sorry to have to say this about any Stewarts. Message to the owner- Spend some time training your employees. Your customers deserve it and so do your employees. No reason this place should have been a mess. No reason that food should be burned. This was my review of this specific location on a specific night. Your experience may be totally different. I was really disappointed stopping in today. The place is run down, dirty, and the staff was speaking negatively about their jobs in front of the customers. Family and I have eaten IN here only once- 4 burgers, 4 fries and 4 root beers. The burger patties themselves are the size of the buns you buy at the store. I actually thought they would be a lot bigger being a burger joint. All cooked through and tasty. Fries were good and of course lots and lots of ice cold root beer to wash it all down and quench the thirst. It was a little expensive per hubby for the size of the burgers and such I did agree- but he was ok with the food as was the rest of the family. Since that initial dinning in, I have really only been back to order shakes to go and service has always been friendly. They have nice outdoor seating and private lot to park, its a little loud outside with it being on a main corner but its easy to get in and out of the lot because the corner has a signal so you can go either way on Rte 9, N or S without dealing with a jug handle. read more

It's a Stewart's. You go for a hot dog and float. And it's better than any fast food joint or competitive hot dog place. Be patient. The staff works hard. It was slammed this afternoon. And all diners seemed very satisfied including us! It's a generational landmark. I've been wanting to come back here for awhile because I'm a fan of their burgers and fries. Daughter and I came here and we were immediately seated. She had a plain hotdog with mustard and relish and she added ketchup to it. She liked it a lot and was glad that the hotdog wasn't as large as Costco's! LOL. I ordered the California Hamburger and liked it a lot. It was slightly burnt, but it was still good nonetheless. We also shared a side of French fries with bleu cheese and thought it was delicious and crispy. For drinks, we ordered two root beers. It should be noted that the condensation eventually wears off the mug and leaks onto the table. The table got wet, so we had to put napkins underneath our cups. After we experienced this, we noticed that other diners were doing the exact same thing! Service was quick and friendly. We will definitely return to try other items on the menu. read more

A grilled juicy dog with chili & onions, a plate of crispy fries, and of course a large root beer float made with the best root beer on earth. Don't go here.... The staff sucks you better get new people to work there because the girl behind the counter is horrible. The cooks don't do their job food came out 40 minutes later for two small hotdogs and fries and they weren't even that good... probably on their phones instead of doing their jobs like they're supposed to we were the only people in the place besides one couple and I food still took almost 30 minutes... I I don't know what the cooks were doing behind the line but they sure as hell weren't doing their job horrible horrible place and dirty as hell.. Mom and I stopped in for a quick easy bite for lunch. The service was rather slow, our hot dogs took close to 10 minutes. It was 3pm, so not in the middle of a lunch rush either. The hot dogs were brought out without our waffle fries, which were another 3 to 5 minutes. By the time they came out we were almost done eating. At least I can say the fries were hot and fresh, but they came out in a basket that was nowhere near full. In fact, we counted... there were 8 waffle fries. 8. I know waffle fries are somewhat bigger than other fries, but this probably equated to the amount in a Dollar Menu fry. Maybe a medium fry. And they charged $3.45. For 8 effing fries. Won't be going here again. Couldn't be called "fast" food and it was waaaay over priced. read more

Sad and disappointed!! We enjoyed the food at Stewart's of Howell for over 10 years, we became regulars. With new owners we were pleased to learn that they promised not to change the quality of the food offered. This is now our third visit that has caused us to question that promise. In the past the burgers were top on my list... today there was no question that they have resigned to poor quality, frozen and tasteless burgers. As much as I want to support local establishments, I will wait to read reviews before I consider going back. read more

I came to this Stewart's after visiting Six Flags in Jackson, NJ because it is the perfect distance away and I've grown up drinking Stewart's root beer so I thought I'd give this a try. It was old-fashioned and had great service. Highly recommend the Frank Stewart burger with a Frosted Root Beer Float. Great combination for a great price. I will definitely be returning. read more

disgusting. I got a grilled chicken sandwich and I bit into it and the chicken was rubbery and chewy. They didn't even put the lettuce and blue cheese on. Probably the best hamburger I've had since I've been up here. Granted I haven't been to that many burger joints. The burgers are kind of small and lettuce and tomato have to be asked for. Their pickles are quite delicious though. It comes off as a hole in the wall joint, which is why I gave it a try. It was reasonably priced, however, a star was taken off for the actual size of the burger. The fries were delicious and I'd go there again just to order them. I'll be back again, but it's not necessarily a place I'll crave and just have to go there again. It'll be more of a, "that place sounds good; I haven't had it in a while," type of thing. If you haven't eaten here, it's worth a stop if your close by. I didn't have any of their root beer or floats or anything so I cannot comment on that, but I will next time read more

It appears Stewart's opened up a deli next-door I have to tell you they have the worst customer service that anyone can possibly imagine. I go to Stewart's all the time and frequent the deli at least twice a week after today I will never return to neither one of those miserable disrespectful horrible places again. I went their yesterday ordered a burger fries and chicken fingers and drinks. I will start with the drinks the sodas tasted flat even after I sent it back after waiting 10min for the waitress to return can back the same way do you think I wouldn't notice . The Burger was frozen and white inside tasted horrible . The chicken fingers were so well done my daughter couldn't eat it the only thing good were the French fries. Wow. The neighborhood landmark with the great burgers and friendly, effusive staff is gone forever. Today was the first time I visited the place under its new ownership, and I definitely won't be returning. My California burger, an old favorite, was salty and stiff, the milkshake muddy and bland. There was no camaraderie, no chat, no laughter, none of the easy and welcoming rhythm that characterized the place for years. When a particularly curt member of the staff (actually, she seemed to be the owner) swept away my reluctant tip with nary a nod, I knew I was done. It's not healthy but it's soooo good. The root beer also tastes better than bottled Stewarts. A local delight for sure.
