I was visiting the Akron Art Museum on a Friday and wanted to grab some fish and chips so a quick Yelp search led me to Kevin O'Bryan's. Located South of downtown Akron just past all of the Bridgestone facilities KOB is a small dive bar on a corner. You enter through the side door and find a dark bar, which was fairly crowded, especially at the bar. Even though they put up some plexiglass barriers between tables I decided with Covid 19 it was better to sit out on the patio, which had four good sized tables. I headed out and grabbed a seat in the shade. Service was friendly, but a bit slow, probably due to the number of guests. The menu is the usual pub grub, so since it was Friday I choose the fish and chips, which is specially priced at $8.99. It took a while for the food to come out, but well worth the wait. The fish and chips comes in a basket with a nice portion of creamy crunchy coleslaw, a heaping portion of crispy battered pub fries and four nice sized pieces of fish. The fish was great, flaky cod cut thick with a nice beer batter expertly cooked. All of the food was well prepared with no surprises, just nicely made straight ahead food. They are not trying to be cutting edge or trendy. KOB has no real ambiance, other then being a dive bar, service was nice, but slow, however the food is good at a reasonable price. Just moved to Firestone Park and wanted to check out this place! Went on a Saturday night and it was not busy, one girl was working the bar and the tables. She was super nice and attentive! The 10 Oz steak dinner was jicy tender and cooked perfectly The real mashed taters were fluffy and flavorful and the large salad that came with it had cheese,croutons ,tomatoes and radishes with onions nicely toppped with homade white,French. The $2.99 side of fries was big enough for 3 people and were hot and mouthwatering . My wife had 3 fish tacos for o verrry reasonable price that she raved about . We also took home 12 boneless wings that were the best for only 8 bucks . The bar maid waitress was so good and friendly . The place is not real large so go early . I LOVE the burgers here. I asked to meet the cook, and he came out and introduced himself (James.) I told him the burger I'd just had, the Chipotle burger was the best I'd ever had. I think he may have blushed. :) I've tried the FPC burger with the fried egg on it, and now it's my favorite. Come on Tuesday, it's trivia night (free to play with prized) and also $5 burger night. They bought and redecorated a very old bar that was in dire need of either being torn down or revived. And revived they did! This is my second time eating at KOBs since coming to town for work. First time the food was amazing! That Shamrock Chicken sandwich and loaded fries is where it's at! Tried a different sandwich this time but went back for those fries... While the Notre Dame Chicken was on point, the fries this time were a huge disappointment. Having worked in the food service industry for years before a career change, and knowing my way around a kitchen, I can confidently say the kitchen just reheated a left over order from last night and sold them... KOB's is one of the best bars in Akron you've never heard of. One of my friends lives near this neighborhood, so we frequent this Irish themed pub often. The building itself is a little small, so it can get a little cozy when it's busy. There's a pool table at one end and a small stage/dance floor at the other end. TV's line the bar wall as well as the back wall for entertainment. They often have bands playing on Friday evenings (check their website for events) and Thursday karaoke. I personally sound like a cat in heat when I try to sing, so I'm not there too often for that. The bartenders are very friendly and fun to chat with when they're not too busy. Kevin O'Bryan's goal is to serve the best burgers in Akron. Well, if they are not the best, they are pretty close. I stopped in last night for their Wednesday $5.00 burger night. Not having been there before I had no idea what to expect. From the outside it looks like an old, dumpy neighborhood bar in an old, rundown building with not much parking. Just the kind of place I love! Inside, it IS an old neighborhood bar, with dim lighting, TVs along the long walls, a bar down one side of the room with tables and booths along the other. The bartenders/waitresses were as efficient, nice and friendly as imaginable. The menu listed several burgers along with a build-your-own. I ordered the FPC Burger, a half-pound burger with American cheese, bacon, tater tots, a fried egg and chipotle mayo, cooked medium-well. Burgers come with a side of Irish Pub Fries. It costs $9.00 on any other day but Wednesday. I've become a fan of the fried-egg craze that's become a standard menu item at places specializing in burgers. But this is the first time I've had tater tots on a burger. With the bacon, it's like having breakfast on a burger. I have to admit: It works! Cheese, topped with four slices of bacon cooked til crisp, covered with tater tots, hot and crispy, then a fried egg. The beef was seared perfectly with a slight crunch on the outside and still juicy inside. I literally could not open my mouth wide enough to eat this. So, almost every bite was different. First bite was of bacon, tots, egg and bun. Next bite: bun, burger, cheese and bacon. Next bite: burger, cheese, bacon, and tots. Then: burger, cheese, tots, bacon and egg. You get the picture. The bun was toasted nicely, but, even at that, had trouble lasting all the way through the meal without getting soft and barely remaining together. With all those toppings, what else could you expect? The fries tasted great. Not thin cut and not too fat. Their crispness stayed with them until they were finished. It was a fantastic meal. My only complaint is the egg had been cooked just a tad too long. The yolk should be runny so it can drip down and smother the burger. This yolk was soft but not runny. But it certainly wasn't cooked to a consistency of rubber like those quarter-pound places do it! (Yes. That was a shot.) The burger I had contains so many parts that need to be cooked just right to make it come all together. And as this was my first visit there I cannot vouch for whoever else cooks there. But tonight the chef was a master. He balanced everything on my burger with that of two others at my table who also ordered intricate burgers. The only caution is that if they are busy it may take a while to get your order. One person at my table ordered from the appetizer menu for her meal and it came out well before our burgers. Two others in my party arrived late, after we had ordered, and their order came out when we were almost finished eating. So if you are in a hurry you better get there early, or just deal with it. Took 20 minutes to get a drink with only 4 people inbar, we order 2 appetizer which were the pretzel bits and the Kevin fries. 30 minutes later we got the appetizer the bites were good . My fries were horrible. They tasted over cook and very dirty oil. I told out server. She took them and said he is the bad cook then never took it off my bill. I've been frequenting Kevin O'Bryan's for years and it is one of my go to bars for their drink/food specials and numerous TVs for watching Cleveland sports. They feature daily drink and food specials. Thursday Long Island and Taco night is a favorite. The tacos are always different but usually feature chicken, seafood or beef. Kevin O'Bryan's features a full bar with a variety of different beers on tap including some specialty brews. The staff here is friendly and efficient. Went in for lunch. Service was good, female staff very friendly. Food was average for average cost. But, when I first walked in it smelled old and musty. Holy Crap! Went into O'Bryan's for St Patty's day at 7:00 PM yesterday! Packed and loud with a good band. Fun times...right! WORST CORNED BEEF SANDWICH EVER!!!!!! I realize that I came in late to the game for Patty's day, but there has to be a time when you say: we're all out of corned beef! It was microwaved lunch meat on toast. Funny thing is, we ordered Rubens and got total crap!!! No sauerkraut, No 1,000 island, no napkin...THREW THEM OUT. $2 to get in, $12 for 2 beers and $12 for two lousy, uneatable and samll sandwiches. WTF $26 Bad experience! St Patrick would have punched Kevin O'Brian in the face for that dog food. We spoke with a woman who said that she has been there many times and that the food was really good! I believe her. It's not like I hated the place and I expect to pay more on Patty's Day, but to serve food that is that substandard is unthinkable. I imaging that earlier in the day, the sangies were probably great, but at some point they ran out of corned beef and went to the gas station for lunch meat and then nuked it, slapped it on toast and served it. I bet even the bread was disgusted with the meat! We had to stop on the way home to get something to eat. Shame on you O'Bryan's, know when to stop serving SHIT food! I really wish that I would have taken a photo so you could see how crappy the food was. I was so disgusted, there was a trash can right next to us...and in they went. We had the chicken tenders which were good .only drawback, as one of the urinals was out of order and it really needs some TLC.
