2 stars is generous as he was nice, but the appointment was a complete waste of time. We had to wait 5 weeks with a 3 hr commute just to be told something I could read online from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Well I'm sorry based on my experience with my LO the AAP is wrong, I did what they recommended, pumping and bottle feeding, for the 1st 3 months of her life and her symptoms just kept getting worse. I had clogged ducts alll the time and an over supply from attempting to breastfeed and pumping. When she drank from a bottle milk leaked out the sides of her mouth, you could hear her tongue clicking, and her lips smacking on the bottle nipple. Finally it became too much and she went from being a happy baby to a baby I was afraid to take anywhere because I wasn't sure if she was going to scream her head off. She also went from sleeping 4-5 hours every night to waking up every hr in pain and hungry. I eliminated dairy, eggs, peanuts, and green leaf vegetables still no change. We did baby yoga, massage, gripe water, and gas drops. Nothing helped so I got a referral to see Dr. Huoh. After making her appointment I kept looking for someone that would take my insurance that was reputable in their field because I couldn't let her suffer anymore. I found a pediatric dentist and he performed a frenectomy using a diode laser that night she was able to latch onto both a bottle and the breast. She slept without screaming her head off, she takes naps during the day, she no longer snores, and she doesn't choke on her saliva or spill her milk all over her. I don't care about the AAP's position regarding tethered oral tissue because the American Speech-Language, Hearing Association disagrees. Not sure how you can tell a mom that a child with restrictive tongue movement is going to be able to control a bolus and perform a proper swallow or that it's not going to impact articulation later in life. As a Speech Therapist I have seen it's impact on child's ability to produce certain sounds and their dentition and I'm not just taking about the gap in their front teeth. If tethered oral tissue was normal then the ICAP (international consortium of oral akylofrenula professionals) wouldn't exist. It's no wonder Team tongue tie down in San Diego is the place to go when your child has tethered oral tissue. They take care of the problem, provide access to IBCLC lactation consultant, and speech therapists. I am grateful that I found a pediatric dentist that took my insurance for her lip and tongue tie. Now I have a month to find someone willing to due her buccal ties or do them myself. In hindsight I should have drove down to the experts in San Diego got everything taken care of and submitted the paperwork they give you for reimbursement, but I tried to follow the HMO process and what a waste of my time and money. Next time Dr. Huoh if you are just going to tell a patient something they can read online do it over the phone and send them a bill, I can't imagine if I had waited 5 weeks just to hear that and then have to leave that appointment with a baby that is physically suffering. Again I am grateful there are other professionals out there to help mom's and babies with tethered oral tissue so babies can eat, children don't struggle with food, articulation, or sleep disorders when they grow up as a result of having tethered oral tissue. read more
