Where is an "office visit" ALWAYS an "outpatient office visit?" UCI Medical Center and each of its faculty practices.
I saw a doctor at UCI Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery Faculty Practices for a 12-minute visit. The letter they sent me in advance referred to it as a "visit."
University Head & Neck Surgeons billed my PPO insurance $901.00 and UCI Medical Center billed my PPO insurance a "facility fee" of $688.00.
UCI Medical Center never disclosed to me, before I went to the clinic office office next to UCI Medical Center, that UCI Medical Center charges "hospital" facility fees to patients who receive services at doctor's offices and outpatient clinics next to or affiliated with UCI Medical Center, even though the services are non-hospital, outpatient services and no hospital facilities are actually used, and had I been notified of their practice I would have declined to be seen. I did not learn of the $688.00 "hospital" facility fee until I received the $688.00 bill and began asking questions.
My PPO insurance did not consider this an "office visit" for which there would have been a $45.00 co-payment, but rather an "outpatient office visit," determined the allowed amount as a participating provider to be $699.73 for UCI Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery and $688.00 for University of California, Irvine Medical Center, and applied those to my deductible, making them my responsibility.
I had Mitchell DecisionPoint Medical Expert evaluate the bills, and it determined the appropriate amount based on generally accepted billing and coding rules and practices for UCI Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery to be $179.83 and University of California, Irvine Medical Center to be $593.00. I submitted the Mitchell report to both, who agreed to accept those amounts as payment in full. I am making payments.
Why is a patient, or their insurance, billed $1,589.00 for a doctor to look down their throat? Why does the doctor bill $901 when the appropriate amount is $179.83? Why does the hospital bill ANYTHING unless you are seen in the hospital? MONEY
