I hope you got money to burn because this office is doing bigtime insurance billing upcoding. They billed $1,566.00 for my 15-minute consult. I went in for a consult about an elective procedure - not the procedure itself, just a meeting to discuss potential side effects. The entire visit took about 10 minutes, but I'll be generous and say it was 15 minutes. Dr. Verma did a laryngoscopy that took less than 2 minutes and then explained the process for the procedure. I learned nothing new about the procedure that I hadn't already read on Reddit. But fine, this initial consult is required for the procedure. Figured it wouldn't be that expensive to just ask a doctor if Reddit was right (BTW he confirmed Reddit was, in fact, a good resource to learn about this procedure). When I got the bill for this "consult" I figured there had to be a mistake. They had billed the office visit as a code 99205 at $974.00. That was **in addition** to the laryngoscopy code 030575 at $592.00. That's a cool $1,566.00 all-in. Dude's billing $6,264 per hour? That's Beyonce money. If you look up the description for a code 99205 "provider visit", you'll find it's typically 60 minutes with a comprehensive history, comprehensive exam with high complexity decision-making and an extensive amount and/or complexity of data to be reviewed. This exam was none of those things. That's called insurance upcoding, my friends. This was a code 99202 (99203 if I'm being generous). My insurance adjusted his $1,566.00 to $1,035.79 and then billed me $530.21. I spent about 2 months trying to get Dr. Verma's office to bring the billing code down. Always difficult to reach, always referring me to the billing department at UCI Health (who couldn't do anything for me), but I finally got the office to lower the provider visit code. These MF'ers lowered the 99205 at $974.00 to a 99204 at $739.00 and said that was the lowest Dr. Verma was willing to go, like he was doing me some big favor now. And then, of course, somehow my insurance increased what I was responsible for. I finally had to say F it and just pay the bill. So all said and done my 15-minute exam to rehash what I read on Reddit cost me $556.10 and my insurance paid him another $497.38. Complete f'ing scam. I ultimately decided against doing the procedure before I got this first bill, but man I'm glad I didn't go through with it because if this is what he's charging for a short office visit, I'd probably have to file for bankruptcy after doing the procedure. I would have been better off setting fire to $556.10 cash than doing this little office exam. Then I at least would have gotten some warmth from the flames. read more

I found this doctor to be incredibly arrogant and downright rude! I went to his office with my son in March after setting an appt. which was only after his team prequalified us to go there. They obviously do not know what they are doing because they wasted my time. I can get over the fact that they didn't know what they were doing, but I cannot accept nor should I accept, rudeness from a doctor. After going in and sitting for 4 minutes at most, he asked a bunch of questions which he never even gave us the courtesy to ask politely. He was invasive and condescending with his questions. Then, he without even asking permission, just walks right up to my son and sticks this scope up his nose. I literally was watching him, and when my son twitched, he didn't even apologize! He just said in a condescending manner "you're okay" as if he was entitled to stick things in people's nose because he is a doctor. After that, I was shocked when he said "I can't help you........." and then dismissed us. Here's the real part that put the icing on the cake for rudeness which made me want to rate him on here. He waits until we leave, but listens over his shoulders for the nurse attendant to say to me "Oh do you want to schedule an appt. with us for a follow up?" Before I could even get the words out, he abruptly interrupts our conversation from afar, mind you, he was in the office and she was in the hall at this point; just to say "NO" as if he had to make it clear that he couldn't help us twice. It's like he wasn't able to trust that I heard what he had told me? He had to repeat it and say it in a condescending an arrogant manner. So I left that appt. feeling 1. defeated and annoyed, but also angry. Why was I angry; not because he couldn't help. But you know that saying "It's not about what you say, but how you say it?" This guy needs a quick lesson on empathy and EQ. During the time he was in the session with us which was only 4 minutes, he rudely interrupts our session to read a text and take a call from someone. I was so turned off by the rudeness from him, that as desperate as we were to get a doctor to help my son, I knew I would never ever want him going there. He's rude, obnoxious and arrogant. He treated both of us like we were2nd class citizens that were not worth this time. Upon leaving, I actually felt embarrassed and noticed he talked down to us like as if his degree was giving him a license to treat people poorly and look down on them. What he needs is a quick class on empathy and compassion. He is a very arrogant man that thinks that he is doing the earth a favor by having a practice where he looks at ears and noses and throats all day. He is also lacking basic courtesies like "asking a patient before putting a scope up their nose." That is just common sense to me which he lacks. Then, the real icing on the cake was how UCI sent me a bill for his services. The guy never did anything but tell us he couldn't help for 4 minutes; that was the total time we spent with him, but I think the bill was $600 or more for that little nose scope thing and the total bill was over 1k. We are at a loss for good doctors that care and this guy is a sham. Find a good ear and nose and throat doctor elsewhere. Just because UC Irvine has a good reputation, does NOT mean their doctors are better. I have been to many UCI doctors and found the same or better care at other clinics with a lower cost. Don't waste your time with him or UC Irvine; seek out UCLA if you need a good doctor. They are actually the best and their culture is caring and empathetic with patients, as opposed to being apathetic like this doctor was. Also, it is very obvious to me after reading the other reviews on here, that this guy lets people come to his office and uses that larynoscopy to charge the high price point, but all the while knowing he cannot help them. He's practicing insurance criminal behavior and that will only be a matter of time before he is caught. He knows what he is doing by leaving people stuck with a huge bill, for services he performed after he already knew he couldn't help them. I know there is a dishonesty and poor ethics issue there, but it may take time to catch him and UC Irvine. What is assuring to me is that 'what goes around comes around' and just like BlockBuster went out of business for overcharging and being dishonest, this guy will soon and UC Irvine will be hit with a lawsuit to go with it. read more

I began singing when I was 14 and for the last 20 years have sung professionally in clubs, restaurants and other venues throughout the west coast as well as in the UK and Europe. At some point I began having occasional difficulty singing in my falsetto register, but attributed this to problems with allergies instead of seeking treatment. As time went on, however, I lost use of my upper range completely and had to pivot toward singing different material, lowering keys and attempting different vocal approaches. From talking with some other singers about these challenges, I was advised to consult with an ENT physician. I sought referrals from my network of musicians for an ENT specialist and was extremely lucky to learn about Dr. Sunil Verma M.D., a board certified Otolaryngologist at UCI Head and Neck. He identified a large lesion, also called a polyp, on my right vocal cord. Although I was somewhat in shock seeing this on the video footage, Dr. Verma reassured me the condition was fairly common, completely treatable and that I would likely regain full vocal function. I went from being scared to 100% confident that I had found the right professional care. After reviewing options, I decided to have surgery to have the polyp removed as soon as possible. Working with his staff at UCI Health was an outstanding experience and Dr. Verma performed the surgery quickly and masterfully. Not only did he remove the large polyp, but also identified and removed a smaller lesion on my left vocal cord that had been obscured by the larger one. A week after my successful surgery, I am feeling fantastic, grateful and looking forward to returning to performing regularly once my recovery is complete. For anyone experiencing voice or vocal issues, I would highly recommend consulting Dr. Verma. He is a recognized expert in his field and, though he frequently works with high-profile professional singers and actors, goes about his work with a pleasant confidence, good sense of humor and absolutely no pretensions. read more

My wife had an office visit to Dr. Verma recently. The visit took no more than 15 minutes. During the visit, Dr. Verma performed Laryngoscopy on my wife. The procedure took no more than 2 minutes. Today I received the bill. Dr. Verma charged us more than $700 for the office visit, and more than $800 for the Laryngoscopy. With the insurance adjustments, we still have to pay about $1,300. I find it very hard to justify this price for the medical service provided. BTW, Dr. Verma did not cure my wife at all. read more

I saw Dr Verma at the UCI Head and Neck office in Irvine. He himself was efficient and informative. However, the office was the typical disorganized mess of most medical practices: 1) I had an 8:45am appointment, but wasn't seen by the doctor until 9:20. 2) I was told I'd be emailed info about referrals and the online portal, but haven't received anything 3 days later. 3) I gave my information over the phone when I booked, and when I arrived I had to fill out paper forms and forms on an iPad. Why not just collect all of this before I arrive on the web? 4) Anti-infection control was haphazard. I wasn't asked to use hand sanitizer when I arrived, and the receptionist ignored the plastic partition in front of her. For the forms in (3), I had to use a shared pen and clipboard and iPad. It turns out that the office had misspelled my name in my email address: that's why I didn't get any emails. read more

I had one visit with dr Verma and I left with no treatment or answers! I have been suffering for a year now I'm going through the most darkest times this doctor won't show interest in helping, I have symptoms of throat cancer, Food gets stuck, I have a little bump in top of the pallet and white bump on top of the tongue in the very back, looks like ulcers, and I get phlegm with blood, I'll post a picture because these doctors are ignoring my concerns I can show them a pictures and they can still tell me nothing is wrong when I'm in major pain, I also experience sore throats, I feel a lump in the throat as I swallow my saliva it's what's causing my pain, food gets stuck, experience shortness of breath and wheezing sounds, my lips bleed and peel,how can you say nothing is wrong? as you see me in pain?! So he sends me to see a pain specialist they only help manage the pain but this doctor still needed to figure out the problem not just leave it alone for months! The pain specialist recommended cepacol to numb the throat ridiculous! So I recently called the office and and they called me back saying Dr Verma is sending me to see a neurologist now they don't have an appointment until Nov 22nd my condition has been bad and I feel like I'm running out of time! I went to UCI emergency room about a month ago dude to swallowed tonsils and white stuff on the tonsils everything I'm experiencing is a sign of throat cancer! read more

Dr. Verma is the best!!! I first called Dr. Verma when I developed a hoarse voice. I had been to three other ENT doctors who couldn't figure out what was going on. I found Dr. Verma through his website, www.throatdisorder.com and made the drive to Orange County from Los Angeles. I was nervous at first, but boy was it worth it!! From the beginning, Dr. Verma was different than the other physicians. He carefully listened to my problems. He diagnosed me with vocal cord paralysis (one of my vocal cords doesn't work) and performed a procedure on my throat with me awake!! It didn't hurt a bit and after a vocal cord injection my voice was back to normal. I ended up needing surgery six months later to permanently improve my voice and after performing thryoplasty (placing an implant in my voice box to strengthen my voice) my voice is great. I would highly recommend Dr. Verma to anyone with a voice or swallowing problem. He was available for questions whenever I needed him. He is funny, kind, and best of all - a great surgeon! read more

Maybe if he spent less time being on television he might do a better job with his patients. I went in for surgery being told that I would get a balloon dilation in my throat to help with my stenosis. 2 years later when the surgery needed to be repeated by another surgeon, I found out that he did NOT put the balloon in there. After several months of care for a paralyzed vocal cord by my local ENT here in Palm Desert (including expensive acupuncture not covered by insurance), I was referred to Vocal Cord Specialist, Dr. Verma. My ENT had told me he had heard really good feedback about Dr. Verma from his patients and other ENTs. Since I am about two hours away (without traffic), Dr. Verma and his staff did every thing possible so that I did not have to come back for a pre-op appt.... he coordinated all the tests, etc. with my local primary care doc. I then had a pre-op conference call with an anesthesiologist and a number of pre-surgery calls from "Monica" at UCI Medical Center. The vocal cord surgery went so well that I was able to leave the hospital as an out-patient instead of having to stay overnight. One thing that struck me as rare was seeing Dr. Verma in action at the hospital.... I had a really good pre/post op nurse... Nurse Choi. (Amazing how much information these nurses need do review prior to surgery) Dr. Verma and Nurse Choi had a conversation, and then he started to leave, and he walked back and said "Thank you!" to her... I told her I had never seen that before, and she said, "Dr. Verma is like that...!" I am sure it made Nurse Choi feel great to be appreciated. After 11 months of not being recognized by telephone voice response systems, of not being understood by overseas call center agents, and of not being able to go through drive thrus for fast food, I am thrilled to now have my voice back. I can't believe the malcontents who would give this fine doctor a low rating due to insurance or financial issues. Not sure why all those good reviews were posted. They were very misleading and I personally can say that my experience was absolutely negative. I was seen by Dr. Verma on 01/30/20 and there was no one in the waiting room which can be sometimes a bad sign. A nurse spray some lidocaine plus some other component inside my nostrils and told me that a test will be conducted later on by Dr. Verma. I saw Dr. Verma after a few minutes and I told him everything about my chronic cough and the throat infection that I went through a month ago...He did not conducted the test which i received the lidocaine for, he looked at inside my nostrils, my ears, my throat and his response was that I had enough medication, even though I am not taking anything for the last 10 days. He said to come back if the cough continues beyond February. Last night, my ear was popping and felt inflamed with a little bit of pain which usually happens due to my constant coughing; so, I decided to call the Dr.'s office. I was told that he doesn't work on Fridays and that his nurse will helped me out. His nurse which I did not get her name said that Dr. Verma is just a throat specialist that if I have ear problems I should see an ear specialist. I wonder why then he is called an ENT, didn't he go to school to be trained in ear, nose and throat conditions? My ear problem wasn not severed, just needed some basic ear drops for my inflation. The nurse insisted that he only sees throats! I told her that he looked at my ears and nostrils yesterday and that he probably know the basic issues related to ears...besides these three body parts are very well connected. My take is that this practice only cares about taking your money and that the nurse needs to retake her continuing education and get a broader education on the ENT field and about the Dr. what can I tell you his 5 minutes and were easily cover with my 50 dollars copay, I am sure my insurance will double or triple that charge. I hope I don't get charge for the unnecessary lidocaine spray since no test was conducted. I was told that my "cash" was no good here. I offered to deposit several thousand to show that I am financially capable, but to no avail. I emailed the doctor twice explaining that I am suffering with pain and he seems to be one of the best ENTs and no response. The policy is specific to him only, so it is not a UCI Medical Center policy. I had a great visit with Dr. Verma today. I was very impressed with his care and the amount of time he took with me even though I work with another doctor currently. He spent a good hour going over treatments and options as well as his experience and ideas for my future care. I was a little worried that with all of the TV shows he is on that he might have an ego! But in all actuality he was the complete opposite. Very humble and open minded. Yet he was straight forward with his opinion and thoughts on a very complicated and rare condition. Confused about other reviews, because my experience has not been good at all, maybe because I have HMO or maybe other factors involved, I have a rare vocal disorder and came to see if I can get an operation which the Dr stated he cannot because of lack of experience..so I was wondering what throat operation the other reviewer was talking about..and second he is horrible at least with me..very uncaring.. I think Dr Verma may be a good doctor and although he didn't find anything wrong with my throat, he suggested I see a vocal therapist. My 1 rating is a direct reflection of the cost! I was with Dr Verma for 10 - 15 minutes and my bill just to see him was $729.00. He used the Laryngoscopy scope which took a couple of minutes and the cost was $809. I called to complain about the cost and was told "that's the cost to see a specialist at a teaching hospital". No adjustment was made so I have no medical solution and a $1,538.00 bill for less than 15 minutes with the doctor. I really feel cheated. read more

I was lucky enough to get referred to Dr. Verma by a colleague. My father has been having voice problems for a long time and was misdiagnosed by another physician. Dr. Verma was able to give the correct diagnosis immediately, performed surgery shortly after and now my dad's voice has dramatically improved. Dr. Verma was our savior. My partner had severe papilomas surrounding her vocal cords and and her airway was almost completely blocked. He went in and was able to remove everything from around the vocal cords and she now has a voice for the first time in months. My local ENT recommended I go to the Irvine Medical center to investigate Laser surgery for Cancer on my Vocal Chord. I did the research into Radiation and scheduled an appointment with Dr. Verma. He and his staff were excellent. He is highly respected and very professional. He took the time to listen to all my concerns and suggested I do go forward with the Laser Surgery I am now in the 8th month after the surgery. My voice is clear and I don't have any hoarseness. Yes, I gave Dr Verma 5 stars! And I would probably give him 5 more if I could. For months on end I suffered with vocal chord issues. I was seeing another ENT, who was actually very good, but just could not get to the bottom of my vocal issue. He strongly recommended that I see Dr Verma for a 2nd opinion. Let me preface this by saying before seeing Dr Verma I did weeks, and weeks of voice rest, speech therapy, bought a steam inhaler, special lounges, gargling with salt water, prednisone and "nothing" worked - I couldn't get any relief! On my first visit with Dr Verma in Irvine I was greeted by the wonderful staff - really nice people who were both friendly and helpful. After a very short wait I met with Dr Verma and he went through my case history and examined my chords using the the flexible scope that is inserted through your nose and down your throat (not very comfortable, but ya know, it is what it is and you just deal with it). After looking at my vocal chords (I got to view them on a screen as well after the exam) he gave it to me straight: I had a hemorrhagic cyst on my right vocal chord - which is basically what I was diagnosed as having by my first ENT. Dr Verma went on to explain that it really needed to be surgically removed. He told me that "realistically, no amount of vocal rest was going to make this go away." Yikes! I will be honest and tell you that the thought of any one messing with my vocal chords frightened me to death. I am a public school music specialist (fancy term for music teacher) and play in a local OC rockabilly band (yes, the 2 can coexist). As you can imagine, my voice is everything - it is my livelihood! Anyway, Dr Verma was very understanding about my fear and assured me that I would be back on my feet in short order and that this was fairly routine. He explained the procedure and even encouraged me to watch it on youtube - I told him "thanks, but no thanks" to the later. Through a lot of prayer, coaxing from my wife and friends I decided to go ahead with the surgery - I really did not have much of a choice - i was not getting any better and it was affecting "everything" in my life. On a Monday morning I went to UCI to "get it over with" and was greeted by a wonderful staff. Like the staff at the Irvine office, the UCI staff was gracious, kind and helpful. The short of it is: Dr Verma performed the surgery and within 3 weeks my vocal chords are healthy again, my voice is clear and I am back to work. It all happened just as he said it would - how is that for service? Thank you Dr Verma for being amazingly competent, patient, an exemplary doctor and for giving me my life back. read more

Dr. Verma is one of the best doctors I have ever had. He is kind, patient, understanding. He takes the time to answer questions and never seems like he is in a rush to get out of there. His surgery on me was perfect. Aside from the long wait I had in pre-surgery, once I got to surgery Dr. Verma and his team were perfect. My surgery went great and his team was there for my follow up call with questions. I felt so comfortable in his hands and I am now perfectly healed. We wanted to check whether our teenage son's voice changes were proceeding normally since he's training to be a vocalist. We took him to be seen in Dr. Verma's office within the UCI health system. Dr. Verma performed a 'diagnostic laryngoscopy with stroboscopy'. We received a bill for $1158. Upon checking with other local ENT specialists on the cost of flexible laryngoscopy, we found that this was as much as 6X of what other doctors quoted. We appealed to UCI Health. After a month, we received a response that the billing data that we had provided corresponded to CPT code 31575 while we were billed under a different CPT code 31579. We then collected billing data from local doctors for CPT code 31579 and found that the original amount charged by Dr. Verma's office was still 2X to 4X of what other doctors charged for the same procedure. We filed a second appeal with UCI health providing details with names of local doctors (including a doctor who is also part of the UCI health system) and how much they charged. After another month, we received a second response. The letter avoided any mention of the billing data from other providers that we had detailed in our appeal. Instead, it informed us that they had verified that the coding and billing were accurate. As you can see from a few other reviews here, our experience with Dr. Verma's billing practice is not unique. So be prepared to be overbilled with no recourse within the UCI health system. read more

He's not very helpful or compassionate. He'll blow you off if given the chance and doesn't seem to care about his patients' well being. I was very disappointed with his professionalism and standard of care... he seems to be concerned with making the most amount of money and seeing the most amount of patients without actually spending time or listening to those patients. I couldn't have found a more knowledgeable, professional and compassionate voice specialist to treat me! I cannot imagine what the previous reviewer was talking about regarding Dr. Verma, it is like we are speaking of two different physicians. He is engaging, compassionate, takes as much time as you need without being at all impatient, has wonderful assistants at both facilities, gentle as possible with procedures. Aside from all the glowing attributes I have just given him, the most important is he is extremely proactive with getting to the bottom of what is happening with you. This is a terrific physician! I was referred to Dr. Verma by my local ENT and I am eternally grateful for that referral. I had an exam in his office and he performed a throat surgery for me. In the office he was so attentive and easy to talk to. I had been seeing ENTs and pulmonologist and having many tests for months. I assumed he would do a cursory exam and schedule me for a procedure to really begin to investigate my problem. Instead he had me stay and did a scope in office, while I was wide awake and able to watch. He was so skillful! And it allowed him to directly look that day and finally diagnose me and plan my treatment. I cannot tell you how wonderful that offic visit was for me. Let me start by saying that like many other writers on this page, I was being treated by an ENT doctor for vocal chord issues, ( carcinoma incitu ), but after two laser surgeries my voice was not improving. The aggressive growths on my larynx kept coming back. Serious depression hit me. As I was unable to speak for myself, my brother searched months for the Best laryngologist in So. Cal. Thank God, we found him. Six months ago, Dr. Verma performed surgery on both vocal chords. After two weeks of healing, my voice came back. He is also an oncologist and was cautious to avoid radiation treatment at that point as it does damage soft tissue and the cancer had not spread.He did a six month follow up two weeks ago and the white coating had not returned. I've learned a lot in the last three years. First, there is a difference between an ENT and a Laryngologist. Second, if you are regarded as one of the best in your field, there is a reason. The worst. Go to him if you want to waste your time and money. I went to him in February for a bump in my neck and saw him for less than 15 minutes and he took my $$$ (no insurance, cash patient). Referred me for ultra sound and had to wait for over 6 weeks for results even though I kept repeatedly calling back. I can only guess as to the reason for the unresponsiveness or lack of service. You might fare better if you have insurance! read more
