We chose the pub side, which has a fun, relaxed atmosphere and felt like exactly the right place to kick off the evening. We started by sharing the French onion soup, and I'm glad we did. It was outstanding and easily one of the better versions I've had in quite some time. My partner ordered one of the entrée salads, which looked fresh, generous, and every bit as satisfying as my fish and chips. I paired the fish and chips with a Smithwick's Irish Red Ale. The fish was crisp, flaky, and satisfying--the kind of pub meal that's hard to improve on. The service added just as much to the experience as the food. Our waitress was also tending bar and happily shared the story behind both the historic inn and the restaurant's unusual name. As we learned, "Onion" is actually an affectionate nickname for Bermudians, a nod to the island's once-famous onion exports. Since the owner is half Bermudan, the name fits perfectly. She was one part bartender, one part server, and one part docent, and it made the whole experience that much more enjoyable. Onions is a little quirky in all the right ways, with good food, welcoming people, and a setting that feels like it has stories to tell. If you're in the area--whether you're heading to a concert or just passing by on I-93--it's well worth the stop. Five stars.
