We were headed to a concert that evening and, as usual when we're traveling, Yelp helped us find dinner. Onions Pub & Restaurant turned out to be one of those places that makes you glad you trusted the reviews. Housed in the historic Tilton Inn, the restaurant has plenty of character before you even open the menu. We chose the pub side, which has a fun, relaxed atmosphere and felt like exactly the right place to kick off the evening. We started by sharing the French onion soup, and I'm glad we did. It was outstanding and easily one of the better versions I've had in quite some time. My partner ordered one of the entrée salads, which looked fresh, generous, and every bit as satisfying as my fish and chips. I paired the fish and chips with a Smithwick's Irish Red Ale. The fish was crisp, flaky, and satisfying--the kind of pub meal that's hard to improve on. The service added just as much to the experience as the food. Our waitress was also tending bar and happily shared the story behind both the historic inn and the restaurant's unusual name. As we learned, "Onion" is actually an affectionate nickname for Bermudians, a nod to the island's once-famous onion exports. Since the owner is half Bermudan, the name fits perfectly. She was one part bartender, one part server, and one part docent, and it made the whole experience that much more enjoyable. Onions is a little quirky in all the right ways, with good food, welcoming people, and a setting that feels like it has stories to tell. If you're in the area--whether you're heading to a concert or just passing by on I-93--it's well worth the stop. Five stars. read more

Excellent food and service. I stopped in here tonight on the recommendations of the ladies working the front desk of the hotel I'm staying at. The atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for, a beautiful, local restaurant that was not a chain restaurant. Out of all the meals I had this week on my trip, this was by far the best I've had. It needed to be thicker and some shrimp since it was called shrimp bisque. I would go back because the rest of the menu looked good but I have to try it first before I comment on it. Ambiance was nice. Nothing annoying like loud music or a non working TV. This was an unexpected joy over the Thanksgiving holiday. We were staying in Tilton for the long weekend and needed a place to grab something to eat Friday night. The onion soup was delicious. The drinks were good and strong, and the customer service was amazing! My mother, who is 80, is fighting all of us moving to the New Hampshire Lakes region in retirement. Every server I've met there is kind and accommodating; I deeply appreciate their talented bartenders, and want to shake hands with their chef after every single meal. Truly. The Bermuda fish chowder is a stark contrast to New England's heavy cream-and-butter variety, but trust me, it'll make a convert out of you after one taste; it's a spicy, aromatic tomato-based delicacy with a hint of clove and a splash of rum and sherry vinegar on top. Don't skip on their garden salad, which might be the best salad in all of New Hampshire thanks to a fantastic range of super fresh veggies that will convince you they have a full-on greenhouse out back. The vegetarian tacos are a satisfying bite, particularly with a cold Fiddlehead on their front porch, but if you want true comfort food look no further than their shepherds pie. You really can't go wrong with anything, to be fair. Grab a booth or a high top next to the cozy fireplace and treat yourself to my favorite spot in the lakes region. I called to ask about live music as a musician and was basically attacked by the man who answered the phone. I understand that the restaurant is busy, but there was no other number available for this purpose. I asked if I could speak with the person who books their performers and was met with "in the middle of service?" I replied "sorry I'm not sure what you mean by that" and was again met with a very angry, "in the middle of service? We're extremely busy-" and I cut him off right there as I was not about to be disrespected like that. As a teenager, it was already very intimidating to call in the first place and I don't feel as though he should've responded that way. Just seemed like a very miserable person overall. Desserts were excellent too. The quality of the food is fantastic and you can tell everything is crafted FRESH! Prices were very reasonable and quality is great. Ambiance: Was fine - very clean and well kept, but nothing fancy or cutesy. They keep the kitchen door open and it looks clean in there. Just a simply decorated dining room that kind of gives diner vibes (doesn't really match the impressive quality of the food). The bar side looked a bit more modern. There are some parking spots in the front of the restaurant and there is also a little lot down the street a few steps towards Cumberland farms! Service was wonderful, our waitress was a pleasure! We came in on a Sunday afternoon around 1:00 and were seated at the bar instead of at a table without being asked if that was okay (strike one). The bartender/server didn't come by for about 10 minutes (strike two). She took our order and served drinks and we didn't see her again for another 10 mins. My Coke was flat and she was so sweet and apologetic in getting it replaced for me. Excellent customer service moment there. The restaurant has basically cleared out. It's been 45 minutes since we ordered. The bartender keeps saying it'll be one more minute and the chef just needed to get caught up (strike three). The chef needs a new job if he/she can't get two sandwiches made in 45 minutes. I will never come here again. read more

The menu offered some great sounding options and seems to have a connection to Bermuda. The fried pickles were super dilly and yummy. The fish chowder was an interesting flavor - not sure I would get that again. The haddock was wrapped in potatoes, which was interesting, but then it was served with another starch. It didn't have much flavor. The house salad was filled with fresh vegetables, and the apple cider vinaigrette gave it a nice brightness. The steak tips looked great. I made reservations for my wife's birthday dinner here yesterday. Probably should not have even bothered as when we got there a little early these was actually only one other table with guests seated. I was a little surprised, but soon learned why. We chose this restaurant because we have eaten there over the years at least a dozen times together as a couple and several times with many family members. There are always mixed but mostly good reviews from others but the past two times that we have been here/there were unfortunate experiences. We started with bruschetta and a shrimp cocktail. The two pieces of bruschetta were quite bland and small, though they were served on a large plate with lots of lettuce and a cute squiggle of basalmic reduction which BTW taste-wise was the best part of it. The shrimp cocktail was likewise a smaller than usual size. Normally shrimp cocktail are made using 16/20 (2 1/2 to 3 inch ) or larger shrimp, these ones were quite small, probably 26/30 or perhaps even smaller. A good shrimp cocktail is two-3 bites of the shrimp, these were one. The menu also states they would be served with a tequila, lime, cilantro cocktail sauce. What we got was a standard cocktail sauce of a tomato base with horseradish, nothing special there. My wife ordered their signature dish the Onions Wellington, which is what she usually gets and is never disappointed (at least yet). I ordered the 'Jumbo' scallops. The use of jumbo (U-10) in the size of the scallops was quite a stretch, they should have been described, much better, as simply large (10-20) or just plain 'sea scallops' without overstating. 'Scallops and asparagus' over Saffron rice or Risotto is one of my all-time favorite dishes, and I have ordered it dozens of times in restaurants all over the United States, and a few foreign countries as well. I must say this was one of the worst I have ever experienced. Unfortunately, the asparagus was so bitter that it imparted that terrible flavor into the scallops, that along with a rather unpleasant old or odd oily flavor from the cooking process and you get the picture of a very poor-tasting dish. This being my wife's birthday dinner, I did not want to disappoint her in any way and so ate most of it, including some the quite pasty risotto. In doing this, I had to drink lots of coffee to wash it all down and ended up having to get two refills to do it. Very unfortunate, and the only saving grace seems to be that the coffee was actually very good. The server was cordial enough but seemed bored or mildly upset with us even though we were the only customers in the dining room and I'm fairly certain that we did nothing to offend her, perhaps just being there was enough? Who knows. We were happy, even chatty, and I never let on anything about the meal in front of my wife or to the server. Note: I rarely review restaurant meals however as we have been there so many times and I felt it was necessary to at least let the owners know that sometimes the kitchen crew can drive customers away. We dine out at several other NH places on a semi-regular basis, and the majority of them are much closer. If we do go back, it will be only at the insistence of my wife or family. MAG read more

Stopped on trip up to Maine and found it to be cozy, friendly, thrifty and better than average pup/bar food. Wife had fish and chips saying the best she has tasted since our vacation to Galway, Ireland. I went for the burger that was grilled to perfection. We started with steamed clams and garden salad. Draft beer/ale selection was substantial, crisp and cold. Waitress (Liberty) was efficient without hovering or disappearing like Houdini.
