Great Location. Terrible service by some of the hosting/senior wait staff. I have friends and family that live in the area and have tried the place several times over the past five years, thinking that the rude attitude was just one hostess but have had less than friendly service by additional host/senior staff members. Food is very good (quality/portions) so I rated high, but the prices are too high. While I expect to see that in the summer, if you go there off season, it's always empty and they close early on Saturdays. Meanwhile, the other places in town are jam-packed (and they have the best food in town too!). Hmmm...I guess they don't see the obvious (?). They don't get that their prices (I hate to say it, but- greed) will be their downfall. This has happened with so many restaurants. They should do this to attract an ALL season, diners following, like my husband and I. We're retired professionals, who live nearby, and would gladly come every weekend, if it were a bit more reasonable. (and the beer/wine cost a little less too) We'd bring our family when they stay with us too! You need to get families and couples, who live in the area, year-round, into a habit/tradition of going there regularly. Now, I know you're probably thinking that you'll lose money by lowering the prices (or having specials, i.e. 2 for 1), but that's NOT statistically true. You will have "volume," and that'll make it all worth while. Plus, people will drink more, and that's always a good profit margin. One more point - Please keep the lights down to a pleasant level in the dining room (atmosphere is as important as good food!). There's nothing worse than eating an over-priced meal in a room so bright, you'd think it's last call! (Don't you want your patrons to linger for another glass of wine, or desert/coffee, or mosey into the bar afterward for an appertif? Make sure the atmosphere is conducive to that.) When we do go there, I usually get the lobster bisque and salads. Which are really good. My husband likes the pasta dishes in the evening, and the burgers for lunch. Waited an extremely long time for our food and when it finally came it was not very good. Our waiter was nice but that's as good as it got, I got the fish less and chips. I got 5 little crunchy fish pieces that were tasteless. My family's food was just as bad, the view is the only thing this place has. read more

Stopped at the tourist room information center and the lovely lady recommended Kennebec Tavern. We were on our way home and had lobster in several places and were disappointed (after all this is Maine and lobster should be very good, right?) After a short wait for a table I saw someone having the lobster roll. So I mentioned to my hubby. Boy that looks good. I think this is the place. Well it was EXCELLENT. My first impression was that the hostess was not very polite. But that wasn't going to ruin my experience. We started with the oysters and fried pickles appetizers. Those appetizers were good so I was kind of excited for my diablo burger and my wife's swordfish. My burger tasted like char and mayonnaise. The mayo was supposed to have a chipotle flavor but i didn't taste it. My fries were flavorless. My wife's swordfish was average and her broccoli was subpar. I had high hopes for this restaurant given the menu that was online. Upon arrival, the staff was disorganized and slow. We waited for several minutes to be greeted by a hostess. We waited several more to be seated. The restaurant was a little busy but I wouldn't consider it "slammed". We were told the only Available seating was inside, although they looked to have a nice patio on the water). The Shore Dinner was what I ordered. The clam chowder was good. Slightly thinner than normal which was fine, and great flavor. The lobster was good, I wish they would have told me before the kitchen could have cracked it for me. The fries and corn were disappointing. The corn was hard and the fries were just ok. Online I read you got mashed potatoes and cole slaw as sides, I guess that is subject to change. The waitress was pleasant although very slow. We waited for a very long time for our meal. Then a long time for our check and an even longer time to pay. Mediocre food, slow, not-so-great service. We just had lunch. Fried pickle chip appetizer and two haddock Reuben's. While very difficult to do with sauerkraut, thousand island dressing and rye bread, the sandwich was flavorless. The haddock might have been previously frozen...not sure but there was so little of each ingredient all you could taste was mediocre rye bread. The place was not that busy but clearly understaffed as we waited for over 30 minutes for two sandwiches. The server never checked on us or asked about the meal. We will try it again in the off season but a big disappointment. read more

This is a lovely place with great views of the Kennebec River. Open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. Full bar. Our Seafood Sampler was wonderful; deep fried seafood was lightly breaded and not greasy. Generous portions and reasonably priced wine by the glass. Outstanding lobster stew. My husband had the haddock Reuben which he enjoyed and I had the scallop sandwich which I thought was very tasty. The line to get a table was over 20 people long and all we wanted was a beer on the deck in the sun. Sixteen tables were open there. We finally went and sat down. Servers not only ignored us, they turned their backs to us after helping other tables. Incredibly rude but instructed behavior we are sure. We went in to the inside bar and the bartender was very apologetic that we could only get a drink there and not take it to the deck. While they were clearly understaffed for the day, they need management that troubleshoots better than this. read more

My wife and I stopped here for an early dinner after visiting the Maritime Museum. We were seated promptly. While we were perusing the menu several other couples and groups were being seated. We waited for a waitress to come take our order as were both hungry and thirsty. There were two waitresses working the outside area and everyone that was seated after us had their order taken first. Finally a waitress came over to us and said she didn't know who was seated first so she just started taking orders. Anyways, the food was tasty (hence the two stars) but the portions are small and the price is big. $27 for six scallops and a plate of fries, $24 for eight fried oysters and a plate of fries. I felt like having lobster but they wanted $33 for a single one pounder. That's high for even Maine. I can get twin lobsters for $17 back home. I can't write a good review of this restaurant because the service was so slow and inconsistent that it ruined the experience...Beautiful setting-The four of us sat outside on the river...Got there for lunch at 1:30pm...It was a bit crowded but began to thin out at that time...Three lunches finally arrived at quarter to three...My lunch arrived 10 minutes later...Waitress apologized that they were short handed in the kitchen but there is really no excuse for that kind of service....Food was okay when it finally got there...But I can't recommend this place...Too annoying and they didn't even offer anything to make the wait more palatable...They just looked embarrassed... read more

Food was awful...I had the grilled meatloaf sandwich this time. In the menu it said it was grilled with tomato, lettuce, cheese & bacon...sounds yummy & gooey, but it was dry, the cheese was just sort of stiff & melted, molded over the thick slab of meatloaf. No dressing, sauce, or condiment of any kind on the bread. And while I got a thick slab of meatloaf, it was dry, and no flavor except too spicy -and i like spicy food. I understand that tomatoes aren't exactly in season, but mine was one shade off from being white. Oh, and where was the bacon? Never saw it. We had lobster fritters for starters. The outside was over fried, the inside was gummy & tasted only of red bell pepper. If there was lobster in there you coulda fooled me. Dad was paying for lunch, but even he said the entrees were ' a bit pricey'. Yes, there's the view, but we live here & don't have to pay for that. Don't order a lobster roll at the Kennebec Tavern unless you like it to be ALL claws. I was told by the waitress that they use only claws in their lobster roll. It's they only place I have ever had a claws only roll. Not worth it. read more

This was the first time eating at the Kennebec Tavern at the suggestion of a friend. The outdoor seating and view were nice, but the plastic chairs felt wobbly while sitting in them. We both ordered the Kennebec burger, hers well, mine rare. When the burgers arrived and I took a bite, I thought our waitress had switched our order. She had not, both burgers were cook to a well done state. When the waitress came back I had her take the burger back. The burger that she brought back was cooked medium well, little pink on inside of burger. At this point, instead of sending in back a second time, I just ate the burger because I was hungry and my friend was almost done with hers. I was brought another water, my friends was not asked if she wanted another ginger ale. We received 10% off our total bill which was $1.90. As we were leaving I did express my displeasure with the waitress about the overcooked food. For less money we could have gone to Burger King and had Whoppers, which would have at least have been juicy and flavorful. read more
