Would definitely recommend for lunch if you are in the area! We found this tavern as we were exploring the area on a whim. We were super glad we stopped in. I ordered the house salad with steak tips and my husband had the Bart's salad, a vegetarian southwest salad. Both were large and filling. The steak tips were a little over cooked, but they didn't ruin the meal. We had the poutine as an appetizer and it was very good. The gravy in some of these small places can be very gelatinous and nasty but this was not. Plenty of cheese curds and crispy fries. Staff member was very friendly and attentive. The bar itself was fairly quiet and clean. Had a definite neighborhood gathering vibe. read more

We found this through Yelp driving down Route 1 in Waldoboro. It's tiny inside and looks like a local tavern..my kinda place. Red Sox were on tv which enticed us to stay. The waitress is the bartender so be patient. She's hustling to get it all done. She knows the menu so ask. They have a decent wine selection so I grabbed the Leese and Fitch Pinot Noir. Decent wine for a tavern. We ordered apps to include wings (yeah baby) and spinach artichoke dip because hubby is obsessed. Good stuff Our meals were great too. Hubby got the grilled chicken wrap and me the portobello burger. They have vegetarian dishes. Go figure! Find this place, be patient and relax, foods great! read more

It's a small local tavern with locals (go figure) and very casual vibe. Not much seating available so have to time it right. We were there around 7 on a Wednesday night in June. Good selection of beer and food. The fried haddock Rueben sandwich was very good but fries were a little greasy for my liking. My wife enjoyed her food selection as well. The cheese curd appetizer was of the frozen generic type so don't recommend those (I'm from Wisconsin originally and have a high standard for cheese curds). I was hungry but I was put off by the server's attitude and what I saw as defensiveness when I asked if she was vaccinated. She declined to answer, saying it was personal. Who would have thought that this little haunt could turn out such great food and atmosphere? Especially in little Waldoboro village where there really isn't anything else besides an adorable little trinkets shop. I will say, the first time I came here with a friend was a busy Friday night and it was made pretty clear to us that tourist season was over and the waitress was catering to the locals and NOT my friend and I. We made it clear from the start we were in a hurry to get to the high school football game and despite asking her numerous times to bring the check with the food she did not, and then she took forever to bring us boxes for the food we couldn't eat because it came way too late, and couldn't even eat it while we were waiting because she never brought us silverware. She was incredibly rude. That being said, the second time I went back was with my boyfriend who is a local and it was on a much slower Sunday night. The service and atmosphere were great and the food was FANTASTIC. I had the hot pastrami sandwich with hand cute fries and a class of Cab Sauv while we played cribbage and watched football. We were a group of five plus a baby who had just finished a hike in Camden. Heading back south, we were looking for a place that was casual but had upscale pub food and great cold beer. After reading a couple recent reviews we decided to give Narrows Tavern a shot. Service was great, beer was cold and the food was amazing. We started with onion rings which had an amazing tang, great crunch and we loved them! We all got something different and everyone loved their food. Our choices were the chicken Caesar wrap, the Rachael (haddock Rueben), pulled pork, steak and cheese wrap and,my favorite, the Mr Black pastrami. The accompanying fries were crispy and delicious also. The good beer selection helped make this whole experience a winner. We were so full we couldn't fit dessert but the selections sounded yummy. I would wholeheartedly recommend a visit to the Narrows Tavern. I just wish I lived closer! read more

This a a great spot. It is a little off the beaten path so probably overlooked more than it should be. My go to meal there is the ribeye. Great price, big portion, perfect mashed potatoes (like home without the hassle), lightly blanched broccoli. My favorite appetizer is the fried mushrooms. Fresh mushrooms, batter fried, lightly salted. Portion is large and priced so that you must order. Delicious. The challenge? You can't eat the mushrooms and the ribeye dinner at the same time without a takeout container. The sandwiches all look great especially anything on a sub roll. The chicken (as a meal) - ask if it is dry. I have found it to be cooked to dry- can't stand that! The burgers are good. There is always a drink on special and listed on their specials board. The dining area is completely rustic pub style. Bar and dining are in the same room. It ain't fancy, but it is a place of regulars. The regulars are friendly and social. This is not a clique place where you feel like you are intruding. If you want to talk so do they! From the bar you can turn around and check out what everyone is eating. Typically someone in the dining area picks up their plate and angles it so you can get a better look. And they'll tell you what they think of it. Had read the many positive reviews for this tavern and wanted to give it a try while in Maine on a short vacation. Our party of four started off with the corn and shrimp chowder which was well seasoned and hearty. Two of us tried the sandwiches - the Rachel with blackened haddock and the Mr. Black with pastrami. Both were great- just the right balance of meat to sourdough. One in our party had the mussels (she loved them) and the other had broiled haddock with the daily vegetables. We finished by sharing a fried dough, which was a new experience for us. Our waitress was delightful and the service was prompt and cheerful. What a nice little local tavern! As we walked in we didn't get the "who are these strangers" look from any of the locals seated at the bar. Instead the nice barmaid came over right away and handed us a menu and took our drink order. I always like to try local brewed beers when I travel so I asked her to get me a dark local beer. She returned with Gritty Black Fly Stout. It was a lot like Guinness and I was very happy. I drank that every time we popped in during our stay in Maine. The place was very homey and you could tell the locals enjoyed coming because there were many mugs hanging over the bar for regulars. Even though the tables were all like picnic tables and not the most comfy of seats it seemed right in this environment. I ordered the haddock chowder and it was tasty. I'm used to chowder being a bit thicker but this is the style back east. There was plenty of flavor and plenty of local fish. It was a bit cold temp wise. But I was hungry and it was late. My dining companion had the seafood alfredo - Fresh scallops and Maine shrimp sautéed with garlic and herbs, tossed in a creamy alfredo sauce and fettuccini, topped with fresh grated parmesan cheese. She really enjoyed it and the scallops and shrimp were plentiful. I will admit when we returned another night for just a beer before heading back to our B&B they had a jam session with local musicians. It was loud and off key and a big turn off. We drank our beers quickly and left. If I were a local and knew the entertainers it might have been tolerable. But after a long day of sightseeing and driving it was just too much for us middle aged women to endure. read more

I ended up at the Narrows Tavern twice while staying in Waldoboro this past weekend for a wedding. What a great spot! It's super comfortable with solid, reasonably-priced food and a nice vibe. If you're in the area I would definitely recommend it for dinner and/or drinks. They also serve food LATE. The atmosphere is very charming and eclectic, with a rad 1800's Maine map that every other review mentions (it's very cool), two excellent paintings of the bar itself, a Jerry Garcia painting, beer signs like Anchor Steam (yay SF!), nautical stuff, etc. The lighting is a bit bright but makes it seem like more of welcoming tavern and less like your average bar that happens to serve food. Each time we went (around 7 p.m.) there were folks of all sorts - whole families with young kids seated at the large family tables, one table full of older ladies happily drinking wine and playing cribbage, and some crusty fisherman-looking dudes sitting at the bar. It felt really genuine and unpretentious. The food was surprisingly good. The first night we tried their haddock chowder, which was very creamy, with large chunks of haddock and potatoes and lots of dill. It definitely satisfied the fish chowdah craving. The next night my partner enjoyed the Rachel sandwich, which was like a healthier Reuben and came with fresh cut fries. I ordered a steak tip dinner with red wine. The tips were cooked a bit unevenly, some a little over, but were smothered with luscious pepper and onions. The broccoli side was almost raw (I like mine steamed a bit more), and even though the rice pilaf was clearly from a box, I will not deny that it was perfect to sop up the juicy steak and onion bits with. Beers are thoughtfully selected with local brews and East Coast craft beers like Magic Hat and Dogfish Head. We had Snakebites with local cider and Guiness, which were not only delicious but fun to drink. It's hard not to love libations with magical layers! They have a special mug program for regulars where you get 22 oz. for the price of a pint, so all the personalized mugs were hanging over the bar. I loved looking up and thinking about the local community that drinks here. They also have a small but decent wine list (honestly I was surprised they even HAVE a wine list - nice one, guys) and hard liquor. I live in San Francisco and am lucky to have a plethora of good food around me all the time. Unfortunately many places around the country just don't make much of an effort, so I really appreciate a restaurant in rural coastal Maine that really cares about serving quality & tasty food, some of which is sourced locally, and is conscious about carrying local beers. The staff is personable and friendly, and put you at ease. Even when the place is hopping busy, they are attentive as they possibly can be. This bar gets a lot of local and out-of-town visitors and has retained its local feeling. On the wall is a terrific old map and some oil paintings of the interior of the tavern itself! Very charming. The waitperson provided menus promptly and served us right away very matter of factly, delivering our beer, fries, nachos and coffee in quick order! One customer asked for iced tea with sweetener and was served some lemonade as the closest match as this is just not a tourist spot. read more
