This is a restaurant that is easy to forget. That's because there is nothing spectacular to remember. As the name suggests it is located on Kennebec River, but I am not sure they fully exploit this prime piece of real estate. The staff is very friendly and accommodating providing great service. The food is hohum at best. I've eaten here several times mostly to accommodate first timers to Bath. They believe the quaint setting will lead to a dazzling experience. I've had entrees like the Baked Stuffed Haddock and the Ginger Lemongrass Salmon. The protein was prepared okay. The accompanying Rice Medley and Seasonal Vegetables are the big distractor. These sides take a salvageable meal and reduces it to hospital food. That's why I say this restaurant is so easy to forget. read more

We stay at the Hampton Inn whenever we are in Bath Maine which is every three years or so. Right across the little road on the Kennebec River is this cute little quiet restaurant. It is our preferred stop for a lobster, a Dark and Stormy cocktail, and some fried clams and haddock. It has never disappointed. read more

I tried to order a beer from to bar to enjoy it at one of their tables by the water. I was told no, that I would have to see the host for a table out there. "Only 2 of a good 30 tables had people at them" I saw the host who then told me I could only have one of the tables under the awnings and nothing by the river. Ok menu and decent setting but plan to be there for most of the day if you go for lunch on a Saturday when the weather is nice because every single aspect of this restaurant's Operations is SLOW! While the restaurant appeared to be only about half full, it took almost 15 minutes to be seated by a lone hostess who demonstrated no urgency and hustle to seat all of the parties waiting to be seated. We even had a reservation and had to wait in a long line for our table. Once seated another 10 or 15 minutes until a server materialized and then incredibly long waits to get our drinks, then appetizers and then our main course. All told we were there over 2 1/2 hours for a simple lunch. If this place was extraordinary, maybe lunch there would be worth this investment of time. For a thoroughly ordinary place, it was not worth wasting our day having lunch here. read more

Definitely now on the avoid list. My son has a shellfish allergy and ordered nachos. Suspect cross contamination as he was violently ill after eating there. However, I also ate some of his nachos and I wasn't feeling great either. I had a seafood platter for $32. It had four dry scallops, 2 medium shrimp, and half a lobster tail. No fish. Good food at a slightly high price. The view of the river from the deck is good (over the marina) and the employees are friendly. We had the mussels and salmon which were both cooked well. It seems as though service just isn't what it used to be. I've eaten at the Kennebec Tavern before, and had a 3-4 star experience there. Food is good (not great), service has been acceptable. Tonight, though, things weren't up to snuff. Our waitperson took our drink orders and disappeared before we could place an order for appetizers. Once she returned with our drinks, she did hang around long enough for us to order an appetizer of deep fried parsnips (an app they're well known for in this area). Our food order was taken at the same time; nothing remarkable that would take an inordinate amount of time in the kitchen. 10 minutes or so after the app and entree orders were entered, our waitperson returned with the parsnips (crispy, flavorful and lightly salted) to refresh our drinks. I asked for another beer, but never received it. Our main course arrived after another 25 minutes; the appetizer was long gone by then and I didn't have another beer to tide me over, so it seemed even longer than it was. This was remarkable given that there were only 3-4 tables occupied when we placed our order. Our waitperson commented to the effect "Oh, I was supposed to get you another beer," and I responded that there wasn't much sense at this point. The food was of the usual quality; my clams were nicely done, hot and crispy yet tender inside, and the fries were excellent. The same was true for my son, his girlfriend, and my wife. My plate seemed a little light on clams, but not enough to make a fuss about. 60 minutes into our meal, with all plates either empty or pushed back, our waitperson returned to ask if there was anything else we needed. We declined and she brought us the check a few minutes later. Then she disappeared. 15 minutes later, I figured I'd better take matters into my own hands, went to the host station, handed the hostess my credit card and the check and asked her to take care of it. Like a startled bird, she flitted about the restaurant, apparently unsure of what she needed to do. She eventually settled on our server who had magically reappeared, and handed her the check. It still took another 5 minutes to close out the bill and get me something to sign, and I signaled my dissatisfaction with a tip in line with the service received. Sorry, folks . . . the food is good, but the service needs some work. read more

This establishment welcomed our family of 22 with open arms to a lovely location on their deck for dinner. They did a great job of serving 22 great meals in a reasonable amount of time, seafood, lobster, beef and a couple of kids meals. They even cheerfully accommodated a birthday cake we brought from a local bakery. The food was great, and some fantastic desserts were offered, and reasonable prices. This was just ok. We had the haddock. It was ok with a mixed rice as a side. We have had better haddock no doubt. The most disappointing part of the meal was I ordered Maine Blueberry pie that came with ice cream. The pie came icebox cold. I have never had a dessert that was paired with ice cream where the main dessert was not warm. Not sure why you would serve a blueberry pie icebox cold. Doesn't make sense to me. We sat outside at night near the water and unfortunately were eaten alive by mosquitoes. However, my meal was very good. I got the goat cheese / mushroom ravioli. It was $22, which for that price, I was expecting a much bigger serving than what I got. I think there were 5 or 6 ravioli. It did not even come with any bread. Yikes. Generous portions. There was a changing table in the women's restroom and they didn't bat an eye when I asked for a side of watermelon to keep my picky kids happy. Minor drawbacks: we had to wait a bit for fresh bread to dip into the delicious mussel sauce. I have cooked in many establishments. In all my experiences, the lobster stew is the best. It is the right contrast of buttery goodness and cream. The lobster is fresh and not frozen, and very generous! So worth your drive off of RT 1 in bath. read more

Food was 2 stars, I gave it 3 stars only because of a good server and location/atmosphere. Lunch for two of us was smoked tomato soup, clam chowder, scallop po' boy, and haddock sandwich. Soup tasted like regular tomato soup and the chowder was a pasty mess that didn't taste like anything. For $15 the po' boy came with only THREE scallops! And on a tasteless hamburger bun with an underripe tomato slice and one limp piece of lettuce. The haddock looked like it came right out of a frozen fish box from a supermarket, also served on a tired hamburger bun with one piece of limp lettuce and plastic-like cheese. Fries were ok. I've been here twice before for drinks on their deck as the location is great. If I go again it will not be for the food. read more

This by so far is one of the most horrible places we have eaten at. We got the dealchicken coupon to go to this place and the 2 reasons why I give it 2 stars: view was great and mixed drinks were actually pretty good. When you enter the restaurant, the hostess and the staff is just dragging and not having a bubbly personality. Their tones were very monotonous and it is like they didn't want to be there. The food. This was the worst part of the visit. I can't believe they served these food to us. They need Robert Irvine to do a restaurant impossible on them. The menu looked really promising. We ordered beet salad and toasted raviolis as an app. The beet salad - beets and goat cheese was just fine but the spinach that came with me - half of it was wilted, brown, about to go bad. I couldn't believe my eyes. They gave me a blue cheese dressing to go with it and it was gross. The toasted raviolis were the frozen kind and it was not that good. Very bland. I ordered a bowl of french onion soup and the garlic burger. The soup was really missing few key ingredients in this soup. This soup was 100% bland and the best part of it was the melted cheese on top. The garlic burger - I had high hopes for it because they said it had roasted garlic. Did not have it and the pesto really overwhelmed the burger. It wasn't handcrafted burgers. Look like they got it premade from a supplier. My boyfriend's burger was overcooked and had no salt. They overcooked my kid's dinner! She wanted pasta so she got pasta. They cooked the pasta to death and it was so dry even with the butter. She didn't like it at all. It is like they are so afraid to use salt or any kind of seasoning. I agree with a review that is is more like for old people - bland food for them. read more

My girlfriend and I were in the area for a little birthday getaway. We were hungry and looking for places to eat and stumbled upon this place. We go in to a nicely lit dining room with a beautiful view of the water. We started off with an app of potato skins which were on special. Personally thought they were a little over fried for my liking but tasted ok since I was starving. Then our entrees came. I ordered the haddock Rueben which I saw on here and sounded delicious, and it was good. My girlfriend ordered the Arcadian crab melt which the description sounded so good, but it was gross... when I think of a melt I think of a sandwich that would be at least somewhat warm. The crab was cold, cheese not melted at all, just disappointing dish. We told our waitress and she responds with,"I'm so sorry you didn't like it but I've never had anyone not like it. But I just tell it how it is." Kinda made my girlfriend feel a little uncomfortable. It was taken off the bill however but I would think a manager would come over and talk to us. Nope. Didn't even see one walking around talking to guests or anything. We did leave a tip based off the original bill still because I work in the industry and would never short a server on their hard work, but I would never return here due to this bad experience. Plus flies flying all around you constantly swatting at them during your whole meal. read more

In terms of food, we've eaten here 4-5 times -- keep to the burgers and beer (pretty good fries too). Servers work hard (and, in our case, found themselves apologizing for the manager's behavior). Visited Kennebec Tavern with our daughter, son in law, grandson and two close friends who came via their boat. The atmosphere and the deck were very nice and everyone there was very helpful and friendly. The beer selection on tap was good with a few local brews along with some more popular craft beers to choice from. The food was good, but by no means great just your typical pub grub. The haddock my wife ordered was over coated and she swears it was cod, while my clams were good but it's tough to mess up fried clams. I would say that it is worth visiting, but don't set you expectations too high though you will definitely enjoy the deck. read more

Went to Kennebec Tavern with my sister and 3 nieces when we were camping this past week. After a sleepless night of rain we decided we needed to dry out and eat a good meal before heading back into the woods. We arrived and the manager and hostess greeted us and were very pleasant and provided crayons and kids' menus. We were seated and our order was taken promptly. The food, however, took forever to come out. The place wasn't busy and we didn't order anything complicated or with long cook times. When the food finally arrived two of the children's meals were burnt to the point that as an adult I wouldn't eat them (let along trying to serve charred pizza to children) and the pasta for the third child was in the process of being re-fired because the "chef didn't read the ticket that said no cheese" (waitress' words) and the child has a milk allergy so we weren't just being picky. When the waitress came back around about 5 minutes later to deliver the pasta she asked how everything was and we politely told her it was "fine" but the pizzas were so burned the kids wouldn't eat them. Thus far, we were very unhappy and the whole experience was a bust. About 5 minutes later the manager came to our table with the waitress to apologize for the state of the food and to comp the kids' meals and offer free dessert for all. The manager and the waitress were superb and truly knew how to work in the food industry. Their care redeemed some of the experience which is why they've earned 3 stars. Bottom line: I'd try it again... but I'd leave the kids at home next time. read more

We were very disappointed in the service yesterday. We were seated on the outside deck and waited more than 20 minutes before I asked a staff person if there was anyone assigned to serve our table. We then waited another 5 to 10 minutes before our waitress showed up and apologized for the delay. We placed our order for drinks and food immediately. In another 10 to 15 minutes we waited until the waitress showed up with my wife's drink only. I then waited for her to go back to retrieve a beer for me. Finally the food came. I had ordered the special chowder (crabby shrimp and corn chowder). My wife ordered the haddock chowder but she is not certain that is what she received. The chowder I received was something different since there was no shrimp, corn, or crab to be found in it. While I told our waitress that it was tasty, she agreed that it was not what I ordered. After investigating the mixup, she told me that they gave me the special from the day before. It didn't make sense to us. Anyway, while the food was okay, the service was SLOW and we will not be going back there again. read more

Great location. Terrible service and terrible food. We had dinner there on a Friday evening. As we pull into the parking lot, the proprietor demanded to know if we were going into the restaurant. First impressions are very telling. We waited over an hour to have our orders taken and another hour to get the food. The potatoes in the chowder were hard and uncooked, the lobster macaroni and cheese was underwhelming, the haddock was extremely dry, and even my son did not like the French fries. The waitress was nice, but way over stretched. Seems like a management issue because we have heard decent things in the past. You are better off driving to Brunswick and eating at the Sea dog brewery or the Great impasta. After being contacted by the tavern manager, yelp filtered my review. When I looked at all filtered reviews, there were 9 other negative reviews that were filtered. Very deceptive. read more

The view is spectacular, the food is....ok at best. Crab cakes were wet and a bit mushy. The prime rib was overcooked and the au jus needed some desperate flavor. The fish & chips were not what i expected. Instead of a beautiful filet i received what i can only describe as "fish nuggets". Chunks of breaded fish. It wasnt bad but it wasnt good either. The only bright spot besides the view was dessert. The peach pound cake with raspberries was delicious and the brownie sundae with caramel sauce was fantastic. Service was great. View was great.
