I started going to Keiper Spine about 14 years ago with lower back pain, and for years, I would periodically get cortisone injections in my spine that offered amazing relief. But about 5 years ago, the pain wasn't going away after the injection like it usually did, and in fact seemed to be going in a different direction. So, Dr. Keiper ordered an MRI of my left SI joint, and sure enough, that was a new problem. A year or two of successful cortisone injections fixed the problem - until it didn't. Dr. Keiper told me that there was a surgery he could perform that would probably relieve all of my pain, and I agreed to go forward with that plan. But my insurance, Blue Cross, denied me the surgery several times, claiming that it was not medically necessary. After the injections stopped working and surgery was going to be the only way for me to be free of almost constant pain while moving (On the 1 to 10 pain scale, I was between 6 and 8 the majority of my awake hours), which was severely impacting my quality of life. Even doing simple household chores like vacuuming, laundry, gardening, etc., was miserable. Finally, Blue Cross did approve the surgery, which was performed by Dr. Keiper, and the results have been amazing. For all of the years I have been seeing Dr Keiper and his other staff at Keiper Spine, I have always been impressed with the friendliness and professionalism from the front office to the nurses and medical assistants. Horrible front desk. I drove 5 hours, was 10 min late and they made me wait for an hour and a half.....With a small dog in the car parked in semi shade waiting for me.When I asked them they only said "awhile,"not an hour and a half. If they told me it was going to THAT long after I told them I had a dog in the car, I could have done something to make her more comfortable. Inexcusable since they only see patients for 10 minute. Wife was referred by her GP to a spine specialist. Six week wait. Referred to Keiperspine, downtown Eugene. Scarce parking, dingy crowded waiting lobby that didn't seem very clean. The female specialist that saw my wife seemed distracted and uninterested, argued about availability of an X-ray (finally found it), spent less than 15 minutes without discussing diagnosis or treatment and rushed out to the next patient. We have both Medicare and private insurance, total charge was $417, we were billed $152.76 for what we consider a worthless visit. Wouldn't go back. read more

My first experience with Keiper Spine was in 7/2024. First off I work in the medical field. The office staff is right on point with their skills. If they said it would be done it was. All of my Spine scans were in Central Oregon where I had lived for years. Britney the CMA was fantastic. Everything with orders etc was swift. She is helpful and down-to-earth My new doctor was going to be Dr. Sherman. He had come recommended by an excellent PT. The only scan Dr Sherman had to look at was a CT on my kidney. My records never showed up. He said he took one look and knew this must be a surgery situation. I was already fused for S1 to L4, and 3 had ruptured since and been repaired. I was in miserable pain with no life. An MRI was ordered and Dr. Sherman explained the entire situation. I did not know what was best. This was a very major surgery that I needed. Hardware removed cages, and a lot more hardware up to T levels. I decided to go for it. I am 64 years old with no life because of pain. That was the BEST decision ever. Surgery was done on 10/1/2024. I can't believe where I am currently to last summer. I start back to work next week. Dr Sherman is an excellent surgeon and I enjoyed seeing Zack Manning NP for DR Sherman for several visits for follow-up. He is so easygoing, funny, and very educated about these surgeries. He helped control the pain. Answered all the questions and never made me feel rushed. I pray there is never another surgery for me, but I would hesitate to go back to this clinic. I was impressed with all the staff and how I was treated. Very Positive !!! I could barely walk during my first visit. My meeting with Dr. Sherman was very informative. He explained to me all the risks involved and about the amount of time it would take with PT, to heal and have a better quality life. He took time to answer all my questions and concerns. My surgery went well and I have a much better life.. I can now walk the beach. It was the best X-Mas present I could have. My care was first class. While in surgery I showed signs of having Afib. I was referred for a Cardio exam. and was later diagnosed positive. I consider myself very lucky my team picked up on a major health issue. Being from out of town (Bandon) required lodging. We found the Timbers Inn which is 4 blocks away from KeiperSpine. It was just right. Good breakfast and very clean and the staff are the best... read more

In the prep for my surgery everybody was nice. The surgery went well enough, except that it didn't cure my back pain. And the torture machine they used on me gave me the worst pain of my life for two solid months after the surgery, waking me up all night long feeling like my left leg had been shot over and over and over again. Then came months of burning pain. Five months after the surgery the outside of both of my thighs is still numb from being forced into some kind of frame. I also had a refractory UTI that lasted months after the surgery, plus vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea. I would not have known what was going on without a urologist explaining that the nerves in the area had been immobilized by calcification in the spine and were set free in the surgery, so the pain was the nerves "coming back to life". That didn't help the pain, but it eased my mind. Keiper Spine would only say, "Some patients experience discomfort" with no other explanation. This was hands down the worst pain I have ever had, by miles. Don't trust anything they say. But the worst was yet to come. After my insurance paid the sadists at Northwest Neuro Nerve Monitoring, I had a balance of about $37 to pay. I was billed by their office in Pennsylvania, and according to their request, left a check with the Keiper Spine office. They lost this check, which is incredible for a medical organization. I then made a debit card payment, but I lost the card before the debit was paid, so it did not go through. A second attempt was stopped because my credit union turned off all its debit cards with only one day's warning, so that payment didn't go through. Each time I got nasty letters from the sadists. At their request I left another check with Keiper Spine, and, incredibly, they lost that one too. So I got a fourth angry letter. Keiper Spine finally got through to the sadists and I got a call from them to tell me that somehow the check was deposited and cleared on their end (and it showed paid in my account too) so why was I calling them when there was a problem on my end? I finally lost patience and began screaming at them over the phone. I'm not proud of it, but everybody has their limits, and I reached mine. So that's where we are. And the surgery didn't even help the back pain...it's as if it never was. You have heard my story. There are plenty of good to great results in the Yelp reviews, so go over them all and make informed decisions. read more

Please don't be in pain any longer, go to Dr. Keiper. I had surgery on a Wednesday and felt a huge change right after the surgery. By the next Monday I was not taking any medications, not even Tylenol. The back pain I had for years is gone!!!!! This doctor is great at what he does. With that said, protecting what Dr. Keiper has done is up to me. I will observe the restrictions on lifting and bending. I had severe spinal stenosis, both inside along my spinal canal and on the outside of my vertebrae, impinging on my nerves, and herniated disks. It was a lot of digging, chipping, and putting in of hardware. I have healed beautifully, with no complications, and after a rough first month of recovery, (which I was warned about), I am now out of pain. Three months post surgery and I am walking, lifting, sleeping, basically living life with just a few limits on twisting and running for 9 more months. But most importantly, I am pain free, med free. A month ago Dr. Keiper a Eugene spine surgeon required a. Second MRI to view my middle back because the original MRI did not show enough of the area for him to install the spine nerve stimulator. He sent me to his imaging center, Willamette Imaging, which used too small a tube/ I protested. Keiper's office arranged for me to return to Peace Health Oregon Imaging with their new larger machine that had taken my first MRI,. I'd been told I needed to come in for an INR (clotting test) the day prior my surgery. I called Keiper surgery two days before surgery to find out when I was to take that test, They returned my call the following day saying that I must go to.Legacy Lab to have it done, and go before 5pm, I went at 3pm. The Legacy Phlebotomist on duty said I needed to make an appointment. He could not take the blood test without an appointment. There was no one in the business but he and I. So Keiper Spine Center arranged with Peace Health Anti Coagulation lab, to step in and fax their results Kiepers Anesthesiologist called the previous night with a repeat of my prep instructions as did their head nurse .     Today Dr. Keiper staff asked to see my vaccination card in the surgery center "I told them, It is with my passport in the top center drawer of my desk.  I wish someone would have asked for it, If the vaccine card it is requirement in order to proceed, then we will have to cancel."I said .  I will find a doctor who has a staff that communicates better! I left, I also told them they appeared to be amateurs, that I had lost faith in the Keiper Spine Institute's capacity to communicate, Its all much too casual. read more

My husband and I know that Dr. Angeles is a top notch surgeon as both of us have had spinal fusions. After I suffered with neck pain for 5 years, in 2018 I went to see her on a friend's high recommendation. The minute I woke up from surgery the debilitating pain was gone and has not returned. My husband had a fusion Sept. 2020 and was completely amazed at how well he felt right after surgery and beyond. The pain in his legs was eliminated and his surgical pain was at a minimum. If I could give them a lower than one rating I would! Dr. Sherman left me crippled for the rest of my life!!! Now I am on pain medication, nerve medication, a spine stimulator, an AFO brace because my leg that was perfectly healthy before my surgery now collapses and I walk with arm crutches or a walker or in some cases I will use a wheel chair. After my nerve conduction test was done to tell us what happened during surgery, it stated I was left with a ruptured L-5 nerve. Right after surgery my left leg was paralyzed and Dr. Sherman flew off to Paris, how nice. He got a vacation I got a blood clot. He tasted new food I tasted new medication and got accustomed to wearing all my hardware. PLEASE do your research before making such an important decision as I did about having back fusion and make sure your doctor is up to the task. I also found out that I may not have needed the surgery after all. I found out there were others out there just like me that had gone to same doctor almost same procedure or a little different and had horrible outcome. One good thing came out of this whole nightmare was that I did get my faith with my Lord Jesus Christ became stronger. I called on Him, I leaned on Him, I yelled out for Him, the pain was so intense when the nerve was trying and I do mean trying because it actually never grows back the way it suppose to; the pain is so horrendous that you just want to die. HE answered, Yes God answered and helped me find a great pain clinic Neuro-Spine has a fabulous pain doctor and PA Dr. Phillips and Mark Wells that gave me a life I can live with. I live in pain 24/7 but it is manageable with pills every 4 hours and a spinal stimulator. So make sure you research your surgeon no matter what type of surgery and make sure your doctor is qualified and good and is highly recommended. Who cares about bedside manners that doesn't get the job done great surgeon gets the job done. I have never experienced such a wonderful staff at any clinic. Everyone is so helpful and genuine and really seem to care. After years of PT and chronic pain Dr Jack Burndt recommended RFA to eliminate the pain. I went from being basically disabled to being almost 100%. Other institutes recommended a surgery that would've probably left me in a worse condition. These guys are game changers read more

Be mindful of this physician. First visit looking for a new local Spine Specialist and started here. Dr. Keiper was not personable and his personality will have to be overlooked. He did not once ask about my past back history or surgery and surprisingly my nerve damage from it. When I would speak he would cut me off and he asked me twice "What is it you want from me?" I was taken aback by his lack of listening skills. He also stated that I needed to get with a primary care physician to get pain medications to which I had to bluntly state that I do not need any pain medications that is not why I was there. It was a very unproductive, awkward and unprofessional office visit. I would not recommend this guy to anyone truly needing serious back/spine monitoring. I'm not sure how competent he is but struck me as being exceptionally arrogant and obviously he has no reason to be. Final note: I've been told by two different physicians in Missouri basically the same diagnosis and prognosis based on my current back status. This doctor said something completely opposite of what these others told me. He said to me twice "Everybody has back pain." He was most unhelpful and I do know a thing or two about ruptured disc and the pain that stems from them. Mine herniated and then fragmented off and severed the nerve to my left leg. The disc was removed and fragments were cleaned out as much as possible by neurosurgeon at the time. I lost complete use of my left leg and was confined to wheel chair, walker and crutches (dragging it along) for some time. Obviously, I need someone who is capable of monitoring my back since its not well. It will apparently never be okay again. That's why I went to this person. That all being said.... his receptionist Bridget was very personable and fast with the check in process. She is a great fit for that job. She was the only good thing about my visit to this office. read more

First time around, I was thrilled. I had spinal stenosis and had a spinal decompression surgery. Follow up was great!! Second time around makes no sense, had to wait...in severe pain....met with Ralph finally but symptoms dismissed and ZERO follow up. I had to call 3 times to hear that they weren't even positive which PCP to call for permission for my surgery (due to some gastric issues I guess...he didn't really tell me). HE NEVER CALLED MY PCP and I was told by the MA on the third call that I didn't need to call back...that Ralph would call me after he talked to my PCP (same story 3 times). A WEEK LATER, he still had not called my PCP. What he doesn't seem to realize is the distance that caused with my PCP. My word is my bond....why isn't a doctor that way after taking an oath to be that professional. I completely wasted a 6+ hour trip, the cost of gas, time, and increased back pain from the trip....WTH, WHY NOT ORDER IMAGING? I just don't get this lack of professionalism at all!! read more
