My 2010 MacBook Pro was not working. It would turn on to the white screen, gray Apple logo, and loading bar. The bar would take forever to load, and even after it did, the system would freeze. I took it to Keane. After describing the problem, they diagnosed it immediately as a bad hard drive. I paid $129 for a full diagnostic analysis, including testing my battery. After a couple hours they emailed to confirm the issue, and I approved a new hard drive installation (hardware cost $99). They fixed it same day, and now it works perfectly! I decided not to shop around because I thought my time was more valuable. Keane made the whole process very easy. $228 is definitely much cheaper than $1000 for a whole new laptop. These guys are amazing! So originally my laptop would do this annoying thing where it would freeze and a gray screen with a flashing question mark file would come up. Then when I took it to the apple store the guys at the Genius Bar told me I had liquid damage in my 2012 MacBook Pro and Apple Care does not cover that. So their solution would be to ship it somewhere else and replace three parts for $800. That's ridiculous. I might as well go buy an 11 inch MacBook Air for $999. Then they recommended me to Keane where they were super friendly and detailed when describing the process they were going to take to see what's wrong with my laptop. It turns out the liquid in my laptop wasn't effecting my laptop at all and I just had a wire loose in my hard drive! They also recommended I replace my track pad. So for a new wire and track pad only cost me $168! $168 compared to $800 at the Apple Store is a steal. Now my laptop works brand new! Thank you so much guys! After taking my G4 Powerbook (The Baby Machine) to the Apple Store's Genius Bar because it stopped turning on, I was informed that my Hard Drive needed to be replaced. Apple said they can fix it... for $400. $400 for a 60gb HD... no way. There must be someplace cheaper. YES, there was someplace else... the GENIUS at Apple gave me The Powerbook Guy's contact info and I emailed him right away. Daniel K. Janisch, the Powerbook Guy, is so awesome. Very easy to talk to and located not too far from the Apple Store on Market. There was no way anyone could have recovered any of my files so I didn't even let Daniel try -- I was ready to move on to a bigger, better HD (100gb)... no strings attached. I paid only $216 for the HD replacement, labor and tax included. A great deal, I say! My 2009 Mac had been warning me for a couple weeks that the startup disk was full, which I, of course, ignored. But I must have had some sense because at least I performed a full system backup onto an external hard drive. Eventually, my computer was really full and unable to initialize when I turned it on. Long story short, I bought a new Mac Book Pro and wanted to have my old computer wiped so I could sell it. I was a little confused about what that would entail and was prepared to drop $300 on the Keane service to have my data recovered from my old computer and then wiped. The sales guy pointed out that I had just backed up my computer on the external hard drive and, if I didn't need anything that I had saved in the last two weeks, it would be a lot cheaper just to pay them $75 to wipe the hard drive. They wiped the hard drive, wrote over the memory in random binary code, wiped it again, took all the stickers off and cleaned up my computer (it had been to Burning Man a couple times and had a lot of playa in it). I was very happy with Keane's customer service, the finished product, and I always love it when sales reps are super honest and help me save money on their services. Spilled a glass of ice water on my MacBook Pro. It died a horrible death. I panicked. Googled Mac repair in Sf and Keane came up. Daniel was patient and matter of fact. He was able to save my files from the hard drive. The Mac was toast, however. Daniel sold me a refurbished Mac Book Pro, same year and model as my dead one. He loaded the files on it. I had spilled some tea on my MacBook pro 2019 16" and was concerned about keys on the keyboard that were sticking, so I arranged an appointment with this establishment and brought my precious laptop with me. Daniel was great. He could have easily sold me a bill of goods, taken my laptop, done some lackluster effort to diagnose/clean it, handed it back to me, and charged me $150. Instead, Daniel was very honest about the situation: he inspected the computer, and concluded that, based on the model of my computer, the difficulty in removing the keys for my particular model, and the fact that he did not have replacement keys on hand for it, instead of potentially breaking a key(s) and having me go on a goose chase to hunt down some replacement keys on my own, he recommended that I try to get some AppleCare for the MacBook and have Apple take a look at it. the cost for that would not be cheap, but the outcome would be far more desirable. I appreciate that kind of honesty. To me, it showed a real professionalism on Daniel's part. I am sure that he is a gifted technician, times are tough, I am sure he could have used the business, but he stood by his principles and guided me down a path that would have a potentially far better outcome for me, the customer. My hat is off to Daniel, that kind of professionalism and commitment is rare these days. Apple fried my G4 with a totally unnecessary update, and when I took the little guy in, the Genius... Real quick here: Could they have named their on-site tech support something a little more grating? I mean really. It's not helping things at all that they have better hair and shinier gadgets than I do, now they're friggin' GENIUSES? I know that the whole point was to massage delicate Mac users into a sense of safety, of Apple providing nothing less than the most intelligent possible people in the world, but c'mon now. Really. So the Genius he says to me, "We can ship it off for a new hard drive for $350, or you can..." and here his voice got quieter, "...take it around the corner to The PowerBook Guy for a faster turnaround and it'll be cheaper, too." So I did. First off, The PowerBook Guy is in The Flood Building, a beautiful old thing that I'd always wanted an excuse to go into. Second: Daniel- the "Guy" in "The PowerBook Guy"- sounds EXACTLY like Frank Oz. This instilled in me an instant sense that The PowerBook Guy was a guy I could trust. He did some computer voodoo, told me that he couldn't promise to save the data, gave me an estimate, and told me he'd call me within the next two days. He called me the next day. Computer's fixed, data's there. I picked it up today. I'm so happy! I feel like my cat just came home from the vet- just lookit the little guy over there, all covered in stickers, happily purring away... A review actually worth writing! Powerbook guy was sent to SF by God. After dropping a few pints of Hefeweizen on my powerbook at Jade numerous times, I needed to replace my keyboard. The genius bar fuckers at Apple Store said 1000 bucks, the Mac Repair junkies said 800 bucks + shipping to some undisclosed location but Powerbook guy fixed it for less than 500 and in less than 12 hours. He has his cute little shop at the Flood building in Union Square area and is quite handy with his Apple tools. My powerbook is about 2 years old, but also powerbook 'god' touched it, it feels like new. read more

First of all, I am now convinced you can't get decent service if you are a young female. This has taken a year to write, because I've been choosing my words carefully. I am a graphic design student, so my laptop is my life --- I searched the web for hours for months trying to find a safe place for it to get fixed. After all, I was only bringing it in for a generally cosmetic procedure. I wanted to eliminate a noise that my computer was emitting when I lowered the brightness, and thus draining my battery. Right off the bat they told me it was due to the inverter board and gave me a time when it would be ready to be picked up (just in time for school). I readied myself to pick up my laptop, but decided to call just in case to get confirmation it was done (I had to drive an hour). Instead I was informed my computer wasn't done yet. Which you know, isn't really a big deal because it WAS a busy time of year. Still, no phone call to let me know? They told me someone was supposed to have called me, but I never received that alleged call. The next day someone called to ask me what was wrong with my computer ... aka they never got to it/ wrote down what was wrong originally/ or checked the invoice? After I told them what was wrong, they said I could pick it up later in the day. I brushed it off because I just wanted my laptop back fixed. I took the train down to San Francisco, and picked up my laptop. It was my fault I didn't check before I left, but the minute I turned on my computer when I got back to San Jose, the buzzing was still there. I dropped what is to me, a hefty amount for no resolution, and what ended up being a waste of money, money I can't afford, because did I mention? I'm a college student. When I called them, they told me it was probably because it wasn't my inverter board that was damaged, but my logic board. They offered no discount or even much of an apology. My problem was I essentially dropped money for nothing. I trusted them to figure out the problem and fix it. I e-mailed them later regarding how I felt about the situation. Since I work during their business hours, I missed the phone call and instead got a rude message because they misunderstood my e-mail and basically claimed I wasn't telling the truth. His words: "I don't want to sound accusatory buuuut.." His tone, etc. were enough for me to no longer feel safe doing business with them. So I'm going to give them credit and say my problem isn't common and they may have not known what was wrong, and maybe because it was a busy time of year their communication was lacking... however; that doesn't give them an excuse to jump to conclusions and replace the part without doing the proper testing. read more

I can't speak to their repairs, because I've never brought anything to them. I did, however, call to see if they repair iPads as my business is looking for a new shop. This message is for Daniel. I called earlier about fixing iPad screens and you went on to lecture me about how they cannot be repaired, how they can only be replaced, etc. I did hang up and I'm sorry if you find that rude and felt the need to call me back and leave a message and tell me that was rude. I found your lecturing tone and attitude rude as well and didn't want to waste more of my time. I simply asked if you had a referral after you said that your company did not do screen repairs for iPads. I didn't ask for a lecture. One of the things I've noticed over my 18 years in the IT business is that many techs simply love talking about their knowledge and don't know when to stop, you fall into that category. I also am a certified Apple tech and I am aware of the calibration facts, etc. I'm also aware that I've been having screens replaced, with little to no issues, for years. I'm just looking for a local shop that will do it, instead of shipping them off. To the point where the screen was oh so broken/cracked, And these guys were able to put in a new screen with a reasonable price. I called a few place's which gave me the run around asking for ridiculous amount of money to look at my laptop. Just when I thought I was going to have to shell out a grip of cash I turned to yelp and read good things about this place. I called the number and described what had happened to my laptop. He explained that my hard drive crashed, and they could take care of it within 2-3 days. The phone operator was very nice and very helpful. Overall I spent 225 buck for a new hard drive and labor. It also cost an extra 30 bucks to recover data, and if they cant recover your files they won't charge you. The Apple Nitwits at the Bay Street store in Emeryville tried to charge me $1250 for a STUCK DOWN trackpad button. That's right, my mouse was stuck, and they were audacious enough to blame ME for the stuck mouse, saying that there had clearly been some incident that caused this, and that it was my fault and that I'd have to pay to have the entire case replaced. The PowerBook Guy (a cool group of people, not just one Guy), took one look at the item and said "there's too much crap stuck in behind the battery. He took two seconds to clean out the dust and crap, and bam, the mouse is unstuck. He also recommended some software configurations that would reduce my heavy clicking, and save some wear and tear. He "fixed" it in 2 minutes, recommended a simple software solution to avoid future problems, and I was out the door in no time. And he didn't charge me a thing. It felt like some MegaHospital wanted to do an expensive organ replacement for some exorbitant price. And then I visit the holistic medicine guru and he literally uses PUFFS OF AIR to heal the wound and prevent it from future damage. This makes me so frustrated with the Geniuses that I'm going to go add a review about the Apple Store. Apple: It's in their best interest for you to accept responsibility for warranty-voiding damage, and for you to accept a "boilerplate" repair ("logic board replacement" or "case replacement"). They are all about their bottom line. If you have a display issue, good luck. If you hope they just give you a new laptop, don't hold your breath. Their decision to help you or not (and how much to charge you) is entirely based on how much it costs Apple. If it weren't for sane experts like The PowerBook Guy, I'd already be switching back to Ubuntu on a ThinkPad. He gave me a cost-benefit ratio of whether or not I should enhance my existing MacBook Pro or purchase the new one. Keane Mac Repair recommended enhancing my existing MacBook Pro. - Business Ethics: Keane Mac Repair did a diagnostic exam on my MacBook Pro and recommended I upgrade my MacBook Pro's RAM to 16 gigs as the first step of enhancing its performance. He recommended I do this first; and, if the RAM upgrade didn't satisfy my MacBook Pro performance needs, then he would provide me with the next steps. I like that he didn't tell me to dump a bunch of money on stuff that could or could not enhance my MacBook Pro's performance. I'm pretty good with computers. Like certified by Microsoft good. But when a friend's ibook went bad, I was stuck. "You're looking at a $400 repair" one guy said "I'd throw the laptop away" said another. "Oh rewiring the components of the laptop and throwing in some electrical engineering for good measure? - I can do that no problem and for a laughably low price" said powerbook guy. Keane Mac Repair seem like they probably know what they're doing. And they're a little better than the Mac store be/c they'll only charge you $125 and not $150 to look at your computer. My complaint is this: they'll never call you to let you know what's going on with your repair. And that date estimate they give you? The one where they say it'll take 2-3 days to be fixed? Yeah, that's just a made up number. I had to wait over a week just to find out what was wrong with my computer. And when I found out the repair was going to be more than the cost of the computer, I decided to just call it a loss and told them I'd be by to pick it up. Three weeks later I came to pick it up, and was told it was still in pieces and had to wait for them to put it together and give it back to me. Would I go here again? Nah. They don't smile. Aren't very friendly. And you can probably find some nice guy in Chinatown who's just as experienced and may even offer you a smile. read more

I had a failed WD harddrive on my hands, with hundreds of gigs worth of raw footage for a film I've been working over a year on. The 2.5 TB harddrive had, one day, stopped turning on. I figured the power source had failed, so I took it out of the original enclosure, and put it in a new third-party enclosure. I plugged it in, and it turned on, but all my data was gone - the drive had been repartitioned automatically. I was freaked out, and took the drive to a data recovery shop in SOMA near my office. I also asked the IT guys at my work. The shop and the IT guys both said it looked like a serious issue - they weren't sure if recovering the data was even possible, and if so, it would cost hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. So I called around to a few other places, including Keane. The guys at Keane were the only ones who seemed to offer any other solution other than the costly data extraction. So I brought the drive in, and they took a look and within 15 minutes and only $25 had my drive fixed and my data restored. The guys at Keane knew more about WD drives than the tech support at WD did. They were professional, courteous, helpful, and most importantly, extremely knowledgable. Really saved the day. Conveniently located in a building along Market Street on the 10th floor (and super close to the Apple Store on Stockton Street) hides this office that has smart and friendly Apple-certified technician elves. And I don't call them elves because they are little people but elves because they are busybodies that work their magic. :) My lappytop froze on me about a month ago and one month later I was staring back at the screen of death. After four years my hard drive became very angry and died. Sad face. I originally went to the Apple Store and the Apple dude referred me to Keane Mac Repair because it was going to cost less (Thanks!). I came in all frazzled on a Wednesday afternoon and I was told for the second time that it was probably my hard drive. Okay. Fix it. Pretty please with a cherry on top?! I put down a $50 technician service labor deposit and let Andrew W. (Hi. Nice tattoos on your arms.) whisk my lappytop away. A day later he calls me with sad news about being unable to retrieve my stuff on my hard drive. I wasn't too too sad because I had backed it up most of my stuff on an external drive after my initial lappytop screen freezing frenzy. I could pick it up that very day but my schedule did not allow it. I picked my lappytop two days later with a brand-spanking new and larger hard drive for close to $100. So $50 labor charge + ~$100 hard drive + ~$10 tax = $160 for an almost-like-new lappytop. Awesome. Plus, I think they may have dusted off my laptop because I swear my keyboard and my screen were not that clean before. :) All in all, I will definitely come back to Keane for any lappytop troubles. It's a little premature because I don't have my computer back yet but these people (1) seriously know what they are doing, (2) are authorized Apple repair and honest, to the point of not letting either you or Apple get away with pulling stuff on each other, (3) try hard to fix your problem and (4) have a data recovery pricing mechanism that is both fair and practical - if it doesn't work you pay nothing, if it does you review the results to decide whether to proceed, and pay a reasonable fixed price for basic software recovery tools (no removing the media with tweezers and bombarding them with positrons or anything) . Their hourly rate is more than reasonable for special requests, and they're willing to try stuff. The only minus is that they are very busy and in demand so they can't always get to you instantly (unless perhaps there is some extra expedite fee). The Genius Bar is free so I would try them first if under warranty or you want to give them a sob story. But if there's a real repair that it's time for you to pay for, I would seriously go here first. read more

Power Book guy can save your day, or your paper, or your husbands life....or at least his sex life. My cute but clumsy significant other spilled a whole bottle of water close enough to my macbook to contaminate it. I couldnt get any power up- wahhhh! It was just a splash but it was enough to do some real damage. I spent a sleepless night wondering if I would need a new one?? Can I do a data transfer? Do I have enough info backed up etc??. Macbook guy had saved my work computer once before, so I thought maybe he could work his wonders once again. Have you ever had to deal with the pompous ass at a "genius" bar? I dont know whats worse their attitude or their turn around time. meh. Pssst...you dont need them. Powerbook guy is a pro and it wont take him 3 days just to get around to your computer (which BTW is key if you have moisture problems) and he will save you money. You know those stories about people spilling entire pitchers of water in their macbooks, waiting a few days, and it just starts working? That so didn't happen to me. I didn't even spill anything on mine. I sprayed some cleaner on a paper towel, dabbed to get rid of crustiness and.. my keyboard stopped working. For weeks. I finally gave in and went to Keane due to a fear of the geniuses and good yelp reviews. I was very pleased with the service, was helped immediately by a nice young man in the gorgeous Flood building. The guys here also gave me numerous phone calls throughout the process of my repair and turned it around in a couple days. Thanks to apple's design, I had to replace the whole case around the keyboard as well as the keyboard, so my stupidity didn't come cheap, but hey, I'm back and typing on my baby..they even cleaned her up nicely and got some dust out that was wedged behind the glass of the screen! Extra points for having a dude there with a cute brit-pop haircut, but alas, I am an old married woman.. read more

I've been to these guys twice and I find them helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. However, the first time, they sold me a hard drive that lasted only 9 months. A head unseated itself and completely destroyed the disk and all data. So, I'm not crazy about the quality of the materials they are selling. They did offer to negotiate on my behalf to get the hard drive (still under warranty) replaced, for $50. Given the drive they sold me was bad, and as a result I just lost everything from the last nine months, I feel ripped off they want even more money from me. Also, they strongly recommended DriveSavers in Novato to try to save the data they couldn't. DriveSavers were OK but far more expensive than the local company that also has a clean room. I felt like they made their recommendation based on a financial agreement with DS and not because it is the best. All in all, I am wishing I had gone elsewhere when my laptop acted up the first time. If I had, maybe now I wouldn't be missing 9 months of work history (and my current project!). read more

Daniel is great. I broke my screen and contemplated buying a new computer, but found Keane Mac Repair. I had a new screen within one day. They also did a little tune up and recommended a new battery (which I suspected needed replacing). Great job! read more
