With well over ten years of SUPing experience, we knew we didn't want to paddle up the river on recreational SUP boards. I sprung for two touring boards which turned out to be a good decision. Keylan was very professional and helpful answering all our questions. He showed us an aerial view of the river on his computer screen so we had a visual of where we were going before heading out. He set us up with two 4" x 4" foam "boards" which were placed on the car roof before loading the SUP boards. He provided us with straps to hold the boards securely up there for the very short drive (about five minutes) to the launching spot on the river. The paddle up the river and the hike to t he waterfall was definitely worth the effort. We did that first at Keylan's recommendation, then went to see Fern Grotto. Allow yourself lots of extra time for the return trip as you will be paddling into the wind which can be quite strong in certain areas. We had a great day thanks to Kauai SUP and Kayak. Justin is the man! I called in at 9 and he said he would hold 2 boards for me, the wife and the kids. He's a super hard worker with a positive attitude and chill vibes. He helped me out with a lot like reserving boards, info about boarding and where to go. Wet bags, life jackets, blocks and straps to transport paddle boards on top of car and an ankle leash is all included in the very affordable price. Now onto the tour...my wife paddled one board with our daughter on her board and I paddled the other with our son on mine. It took us about 45 minutes to get from dock to beginning of hiking trail. It took about an hour from the beginning of the trail to the waterfall. Keep in mind that our 3 & 7 year old walked the whole way. Paddle boarding on the way back is a lot tougher due to winds going towards you and boats constantly going up and down the river (which we didn't mind at all). Whole trip took about 4 and a half hours. Including spending time at the waterfall. This is was great experience and I would highly recommend doing this whether you have kids or not. Hubby and I have been paddling for over 15 years together. We don't have our own SUP/kayak bc (1) its heavy and i don't like carrying it (2) its hard to clean (3) and lack of storage. I must say, it wasn't that bad. Yes, we had to carry the board from the parking lot and tie it to the top of our SUV, but we did it and it was worth it. Hubby wasn't completely honest or i wasn't paying attention - it was 2 miles there AND back on the SUP and 1 mile there AND back hike to the waterfall for a total of 6 miles TOTAL PPL so if you're not used to SUP and walking it might be hard. I was worried and mad at hubby for not telling me (or at least emphasizing it) but we made it back just fine. Justin is a super hard worker and makes it look easy to put the boards on top the car and take them off. If you can paddle you should def try this. We heart Justin he was really nice. This place was great! We decided on a whim to spend a day paddle boarding, which neither of us had done before. We stopped here and the person who helped us was so helpful and friendly. He gave us lots of good advice and made sure we were all set before we left. It was easy to find the parking lot / entry point into the river, and then we were off. We had a great time! It was a bit of a workout but not too strenuous. Coming back was harder than going out because of the wind and the current, so keep that in mind. We also did the hike to the waterfall. I don't know that I'd recommend doing it in flip flops like I did, but it wasn't too bad and was definitely worth the view. I'd definitely do this again if I were back in Kauai! read more

We dropped in Sunday to try to rent some boards. Brandon was so helpful loading up all our boards and showing us how to get everything up, down, and secured. When we got back, he unloaded all our boards for us and got us the shirts we wanted (which are only $15). Many people do kayaks, but I noticed that you have to return the kayaks sooner, and also it's harder (or possibly discouraged?) to go to fern grotto with the kayaks - don't know what the deal is there but I'm definitely glad we went, it was really cool. Plus you don't really need a guide with their good map so the freedom was definitely better. Kayaks go faster but who wants to go faster? The SUPs you can lay down on, move around more, and in my opinion, enjoy more. This was definitely the most economical and fun version we could've chosen. They also give you all the gear to put it on your car and help you out when you depart. We had a great experience on the river, super fun, and all enabled by this place! read more

We had a terrible experience with Kauai SUP. The employee was very rude the minute we walked into the pickup spot. We had 4 of us and he said it would be too difficult to stack all 4 boards so we would need to make two trips. We said no problem that we could do that. We had a large SUV and when he was about to load the boards, I asked him how we would get the boards down when we got to the river, and he told us I don't know you all rented a big vehicle. I said I was concerned as to how we would get the boards down and then he started being very rude and was not helpful at all. We paid around $250.00 for our rentals and did not even paddle board because he made it seem like it would not be possible for us to load and unload the boards on a big vehicle. read more

We had a great day of paddling on Wailea river! We were able to do both the secret falls hike and look at Fern Grotto, and even found the swimming area that Justin recommended. The whole excursion took about 5 hours, but it went by really quickly because we had such a great time. Kauai SUP was fantastic and Justin is a lovely guy. Definition of adventure: Paddleboarded down a river, hiked a mile barefoot in soft mud, and swam in a waterfall. HOW COOL IS THAT?! This was the best outdoor experience I could have asked for. And thanks to this shop's cartoon map, we were surprisingly able to find where to launch at the river, where to start the hike, and where the destinations were (waterfall or swimming hole). I felt like I was in the sequel of Pixar's Up. There were even chickens everywhere at the waterfall. Tips for doing this excursion / how to be more prepared than I was: - Bring water shoes. It will make the hike easier as you have to cross through streams and tennis shoes will be soaked. - Bring a waterproof phone case so you can take awesome pics - Reapply sunscreen since this whole thing took us 6 hours. (Could take less depending on how fast or slow you want to paddle) - As big tour boats pass by, wave at them and they'll think you're a local. At least 30 will wave back. - Bring plenty of snacks and a lunch to eat at the waterfall. read more

We decided before leaving for Kauai that we wanted to stand up paddle board while we were there but there were so many places to rent them we opted to find one there that was convenient. Not only was Kauai SUP convenient, they were wonderful. It was a Saturday and many places were closed so we were calling around. The owner (I can't remember his name) called us back and gave us so much great information not only about when they open, pricing etc but about paddle boarding down the river. We got there about 15 minutes before they opened and met Justin as he was opening up the shop. Describing him as friendly and helpful is an understatement. He is exactly what aloha is all about. He got us all set up with the equipment needed, helped my husband get the boards on the roof, and showed him how to do it on our return. We took longer than we anticipated and called him as we got back onto ground and he was so relaxed about it and appreciative for the heads up on us running a bit late. What a great experience from the moment we walked into the bright and welcoming shop to the detailed information given to the easy ride over to the most beautiful boards and paddles you'll probably ever rent. If you're debating going supping here, just do it! We got to the boards around 1015am and did both the waterfall and then paddled to the other side to the swimming area and got back to shore at 330pm. On the way back the wind and current picked up, but it wasn't that hard. if you sit/kneel part of the way then it's a bit easier. I suggest water shoes if you do the waterfall hike. read more

My husband and I rolled in without reservations around 10am, and were able to rent two boards. Justin was the employee working, and although he was busy with another large group, he made sure we felt welcomed and were not ignored. The rental process was quick and easy, including foam racks to attach the boards to our rental Jeep, which Justin helped get us set up and taught us how to do ourselves for the way back. They also provided us a nice dry bag for gear to strap to the boards, and a map of the river/hike. The drive to the marina was super quick, and getting into the water was easy. It was a beautiful paddle up the river, and the hike was relatively easy, although muddy. However, a swim at the waterfall was definitely worth it! I do recommend bringing snacks and water to enjoy at the waterfall to power yourselves for the paddle back. My husband and I are pretty experienced paddlers, and we found the way back to definitely be more work, but not too challenging. You won't go as fast as the kayaks, but it's still fun to just cruise the river. Back at the store, Justin welcomed us back and helped unload the boards and being a local, he offered us some great lunch suggestions in the area, which we really appreciated. Return of the equipment was quick and easy as well. If you are looking for a great half day adventure, this is a great place to rent from. Kauai SUP - Our new 11 foot VESL Cove SUP - Paddleboarding Near Me - Kapaa, Hawaii

SUP To Grotto and Swimming Hole We popped in to say hi a few days before we actually planned to rent. The first thing I noticed in the shop was that they use real boards, not cheesy ones you get from Costco. These were legit boards (I think the company was VESL). We enjoyed getting a bunch of information ahead of time. We came back a few days later, rented, and were out in the water in less than 20 minutes (I would suggest tipping a few bucks, they cart the boards down to the Wailua river for you if that's where you're doing it). The river bottom was muddy due to the recent massive storm that hit Kauai a few weeks before us. The water wasn't clear either. The waterfall fork was "closed". The river is very calm and just about anyone could do this trip. Paddling goes by faster than you think as well. We got to the fern grotto (bring mosquito repellent) and explored a bit there (got very muddy, again I think due to the flooding). The grotto has bathrooms (building not port-a-potties), and sidewalks. Continued further up for the fork and never really saw the swimming hole. But we did go as far enough to see cows! Saw some turtles (small river turtles) and fish as well. The day sprinkled/rained a bit, but it was still fun. All in all, the boards were great (they provide dry bags for you and your gear, along with bungee cords attached to the board) and the river was very easy to paddle and navigate on. I'd suggest this to anyone wanting to spend 2.5 to 4 hours on the river, hopefully the water is clearer for everyone else! I would definitely rent from them again, and possibly take the boards elsewhere on the island to surf or find other places to SUP. read more

They have nice stable boards as well as light carbon fiber paddles, which makes a big difference when you're paddling all day! I recommend paying for an all day rental, as there is so much to explore. I did the Wailua River. It's definitely an all day experience and some work heading back down the river, so get an early start! They provide dry bags for your belongings. I suggest you bring a lot of water, snacks & sunscreen.. and your phone to take pictures of all the beauty. We've come to this place 2 years in a row and it's a great experience. They have good quality boards. You can choose touring boards in addition to higher stability models, so there's something for everyone. The reservation process is easy and service always great! They will drop off the boards at the dock for you at the Wailua River State Park and come pick them up when you are done. You can just leave them and give them a call, and they'll come pick them up. Had a great experience today with Kaua'i SUP. My husband and I were looking for something fun, and affordable to do with our day. We rented a couple stand up paddle boards and made our way to Wailua River. We rented for the whole day, and for the both of us it came out to around $100. Hard to find a fun outdoor activity like this in that price range on Kauai. We also really enjoyed the independence. Didn't have to follow a guide, we set our pace and decided when to stop, go back etc. The process was super easy, just paid for the rentals at the store and then picked them up at the river. We were nervous since we've never paddle boarded before, but with the instructions given to us and the map everything worked smoothly and we had a blast. We decided to paddle up to a swimming area and had a quick lunch. Highly recommended. Will definitely be coming back the next time we're on Kauai! read more

One of the most professionally-run businesses I've ever seen in HI. Jonathan or his colleagues always pick up the phone. If they miss your call, they call you back. We rented paddleboards from them for the day to do the 2 mile paddle boarding to the falls, and back. The boards were top quality, not heavy, but very stable. They gave us detailed, super thorough directions. We were just a bit confused at times about where the trail was, but there were other groups we could ask along the way, so we didn't get lost. Exactly, as they predicted, it took us 4 1/2 hours to paddleboard, hike, and paddleboard back. We went there after it hadn't rained for a couple of days, and it was still pretty muddy. We both just wore our tennis shoes without socks...in and out of creeks, the river, and the fall.... worked out well. The fall is beautiful and good fun. Remember to take food and water for when you rest at the falls! An amazing day! read more
