Fun day for the family! The 12 year old was happy and surfing easily and so was grandma by the end of the lesson! We loved it.

And honestly, I'm really glad we landed on this place. They offered us the best deal we found: $30 per paddleboard, no pressure, no weird upselling. Everything was explained clearly, calmly, and with patience. The boards were in good condition, nothing sketchy. They helped us load everything onto the car and made sure it was secured properly, which sounds small, but after a long day -- that matters. The whole experience felt easy. No rush, no attitude, no "tourist trap" vibe. Just people who know what they're doing and treat you with respect. After that, we had an amazing time out on the river. Peaceful water, beautiful views -- exactly what we came for. Four hours flew by without even noticing. If I'm back on the island, I won't even think twice. I'll come straight here. $30 for 4 hours, solid boards, good people, zero stress. That's all I need. Highly recommend.

Best place in Hanalei to rent a paddle board or a surfboard. We checked several other spots first,…read moreand everywhere else either had much higher prices or a bunch of restrictions and hidden fees (like charging $100 just to put a board on your car roof). None of that here. They have very reasonable prices, good-quality boards, and the staff helps you choose the right size board and paddle. We paid only $30 per person for a half-day SUP rental and $25 for a full day surfboard rental, which is a great deal for this area. One thing I'd recommend though - double-check that the staff actually secures the rope when they strap the boards to your car. The employee didn't want our help, but a few minutes into the drive the boards started coming loose. Luckily, we had a Jeep Wrangler with an open roof, so we were able to hold them. Turned out the ropes weren't even properly tied, just kinda thrown on. Hopefully this was just a one-off, especially since they do keep your card on file in case anything happens to the boards. Overall though best prices and conditions in town. Definately recommend!

    Hanalei Bay Beach - Mountains

Located on the north shore of Kauai, Hanalei Bay Beach consistently appears on top 10 beaches…read morelists, with a pinnacle of #1 beach in U.S. in 2009's list from Dr. Beach, and #4 in the U.S. by Trip Advisor. After my first visit, I understand why. It is an awesome beach. The entire bay is about 2 miles long, and consists of many smaller named parks, each with its own parking, green space, and facilities. To the far east is Black Pot Beach Park where the pier is located. Going west, there is Hanalei Pavilion Beach Park, centrally located with a large grassy area with a pavilion. Next is Wai'oli Beach Park, the largest of the parks with a big parking lot, sand volleyball courts, and ironwood trees. This beach will take you to the mouth of the Waioli Stream. There are more sandy areas beyond (Ines's secret beach and Waikoko) which are still on the bay, but would require walking on roads to get to. There is so much space that finding a spot to yourself is extremely easy, even on a busier day. The bay itself is protected and shallow, and has a very gently sloping ocean bottom. Depending on the tide, one can see people just hanging out far into the ocean, but still being able to stand up. And the frequent sand bars allow one to stand up as well. When we visited on a Saturday morning, the local surfing school was having a competition, using the large parking lot at Wai'oli Beach Park for gathering, and the nearby surf for the competition. One thing to note is that the main road to get to this area from the east is the Kuhio Hwy. On it, the Hanalei bridge crosses the Hanalei river and is only one lane with no traffic light. It wasn't so bad when when we came earlier in the morning, but it was pretty backed up trying to get to Hanalei Beach when we crossed back later that morning. I read later that the proper etiquette is to cross in a convoy of 5 - 7 cars at a time, giving a friendly wave to acknowledge that the other side is patiently waiting their turn.

We booked out surfing lesson before we left CA, but ended up switching the day (which they were fine with). Drew was our instructor and he was very helpful and patient with us, he also said that he's able to get everyone to stand up on the board (which turned out to be true for all of us!). Hanalei was a great place to learn because the beach is shallow and the waves weren't too big. I had a great time and would definitely recommend surf lessons through Kauai North Shore Surfing School, especially with Drew. The lesson was $60 a person, 4 people per lesson, and lasted for 2 hrs, definitely plenty of time to get up on a wave. We had so much fun we decided to book stand up paddle board lessons with Drew a few days later. It was at 8am (less wind) and consisted of a quick lesson, paddle boarding on a river (beautiful) and then Drew took us out on the ocean for a the end (it was pretty hilarious when all of us fell off once the water wasn't flat). All in all it made for a great time and I would definitely recommend it to anyone that wants to try surfing in a beautiful and friendly environment.
