It started slow and we were accepting getting skunked, but it was still a beautiful boat ride out to the fishing grounds from Nawiliwili Harbor. Then came the first hit, a huge mahi mahi (dorado) that snarled all the lines, but it was brought on board safely. and lines were quickly put back in the water. Then another mahi, then a decent sized ono (wahoo), then a 30 lb. mahi. All of it was exciting as hell, especially for six novices. Captain Jeff made sure everyone had a turn reeling in the fish and we were all smiles. Then the big one hit. Something took one of the lines and fortunately, the strongest guy had the rod because it took a while to discover that a huge tuna was hooked. From one side of the boat to the other, several times, it took four of us guys to get the tuna on board! It was a happy trip back to the harbor and Captain Jeff cleaned one of the mahi to split up. We took four huge portions back to the room for some outstanding dinners. Delicious. It was the highlight of our week on Kauai and I highly recommend Captain Jeff and Island Kaui Fishing. We'll be back for sure.

I have to say it was a major disappointment on many levels. Three of the four of us are experienced in offshore fishing, having done many trips in Southern California up and down the coast. We understand there is no guarantee of catching fish, but, we do expect to have a good experience based on comfort and services. The comfort and service were lacking, I seriously suggest finding a different charter in Kauai if you want an overall good experience. I think Captain Jeff was likely a great deckhand at one point who decided to buy the cheapest (e,g, very bad shape) boat he could find and start a fishing business. He provided a decent intro/over view for the trip which emphasized safety, but, his reference to the life jackets "in the storage area" was simply, "you know, there's a few buckles and straps, not a big deal", was somewhat alarming for me, and, he didn't take one out to even show us how to use it, nor did he even reference "what to do" in the event we had to go in the water for a fire, etc. Safety is not a joke when on the open water and if something goes wrong, panic may ensue, the boat Captain has to ensure we know what to do and how to do it. The safety overview and preparation was severely lacking and of great concern. Captain Jeff's boat appears to be in poor condition, he asked us to remove shoes (with rubber soles for grip!) and fish barefoot to avoid damaging his peeling deck surface as well as slipping, well for me that was an issue because I didn't want to leave with severely sunburned feet, and, I prefer having shoes on. It wasn't really an option, he made it clear that he wanted no shoes on. Also, from a hygiene perspective, is he aware of how many foot problems can be transferred, athletes foot, etc? Again, made me very uncomfortable. Who was walking on that deck the day before, and the day before that, etc, etc. Seating on his boat is terrible, there's barely enough room for 4 on the infrastructure bench, all steel bench and seat backs, no padding, how expensive would 4 seat cushions and back cushions be Jeff? The other option is to sit on the steel engine cover lid, there is very little to no shade available to get out of the sun. Jeff did offer one inside seat to us to get out of the rain, but that's it, no room for anyone else. Jeff, your boat is extremely uncomfortable, but you don't seem to care. but I noticed you had a nice cushioned captains chair to drive the boat from. Lucky you, your back probably doesn't hurt as much as mine does today. We were told when our trip was booked that there would be drinks and snacks provided on the trip (again, 6 hours on the water), well there drinks but no snacks, NOTHING to eat unless we brought it ourselves, we were all very hungry at the end of the trip, again, a complete LACK of service (how much would 4 pre-made sandwiches and some chips have cost you Jeff? Maybe $20?? The final blow for me was when 2 of Jeff's troll lines were bit off he lost the set-ups obviously and was visibly upset about it, explaining the detailed cost of each component (hook, feather jig, etc) and that each was $60 and that "now it's gone, not here anymore to use", as if it was our fault for not jumping on the reel at hook up to keep tension on the fish. He never told us to set the hook, he was doing all the "fishing" and once hooked would put us on the reel to crank away. It's like taking your car to a mechanic for an oil change, they loosen the oil pan plug to drain the oil, the wrench breaks in the process and then he wants to charge you for the wrench. Seriously? And, on top of it, he didn't have a good supply of fishing jigs and feathers, we saw what he had in the storage area on the boat, I can tell you I have more jigs in my tackle box at home than this guy had, so disappointed when I saw this. He really has a bare bones operation, a piece of crap boat, and his customer service / communication skill is that of a Santa Barbara deckhand -turned boat captain. Jeff, you can refute this posting all you want, I'll be happy to provide additional info that I have spared here. I really believe the only positive reviews seen here are from people who were lucky enough to have hooked into some really nice dorado or tuna and therefore their trip was "awesome", "best ever". We had one Ono and one Skipjack come on board, and, Jeff was pretty hard over on keeping the Ono for himself "in lieu of a tip for him" and to "help make up for the lost gear". So sad, we were really looking forward to this island fishing experience, we'll find a different boat next time. Final point, Jeff has an interesting personality, at times very aloof and non-communicative, borderline rude for paying customers, did not answer 3 of my 4 direct questions on the fishing or fish, very perplexed by that. He didn't make me feel bad about being terrified to snorkel at first before I got comfortable breathing underwater. He made sure to point out all the different types of fish and sea creatures throughout our time snorkeling on the north side of Kauai. He was very organized and came with all of the necessary gear for us. He even took pictures with his super cool underwater camera! We also appreciated that he didn't charge us until after the tour - that shows real integrity. We weren't sure the conditions of the water and wouldn't be charged if it was too murky to see anything. Yesterday we went on the most memorable deep sea fishing trip we could have ever hoped for. We are…read morein Kauai for our Anniversary/Babymoon and I'm very obviously 6 months pregnant. Jason was our captain and the three of us set out on a half day charter fishing trip on a day with 6ft swells. I was pleasantly surprised that he took my pregnancy in stride, checked on me throughout the trip to make sure I was okay, but never made me feel incapable. From the moment we stepped onto the boat, it felt like we were just hanging out with a friend. He showed us around the ocean, gave us some history of the island and taught me about the basics of deep sea fishing. I went on this fishing trip for my husband. I know nothing about boats or fishing terms but I felt totally comfortable. Jason was the most friendly, relaxed, down to earth, knowledgable, and passionate captain we could have ever hoped to take us on this trip. The moment the spools started spinning, we knew we had something huge on the line. Jason sprung to action, I took the wheel, and my husband took the reel, and Jason took the line. Jason was so coordinated in letting us both know what to do and when. It looked like a perfectly choreographed dance. His quick lesson on how to keep the line directly behind the boat made me feel confident when I took the wheel. After 22 minutes of a hard battle, the two of them reeled in approx 165 lb Yellowfin Tuna (we get the final weight today!). The entire time, Jason was leading us, but it felt like we were a team. From cruising around on the ocean, catching a tuna, to meeting his awesome Fiancé (owner of No Problem Charters)- the entire experience was something we will never forget. I can't imagine we would have come even close to this kind of experience on another charter. Lee is currently on maternity leave but you can see that her passion, knowledge, and personality are so similar to Jason and I have no doubt that when she gets back on the boat, she will give the same amazing experience as Jason. Highlight of the day was shooting line at a GT (Giant Trevally) that cruised through our lanes. She's very experienced, knowledgable and put my mind at ease on shore and in the water. Felt incredibly safe diving with her and excited to explore the underwater wonderland of Kauai. My two boat dives with Julie were enjoyable as well. The water was a bit choppy on the surface after a couple days of wind and rain and she did a great job of explaining what to expect, keeping the group together underwater and ensuring everyone was safe, enjoying themselves and seeing lots of cool things. Her enthusiasm is contagious and she has an amazing eye for spotting sea life - from a massive octopus, to turtles, harlequin shrimp, moray eels, domino damselfish and more. If diving off Niihau is on your bucket list and you're hoping to have one of the best dives of your…read morelife...you will not be disappointed. This dive was truly an adventure. We're a family of four (parents and two boys in late teens) who flew to Kauai from a visit in Maui for this dive experience specifically. We've done many of the other Hawaii dives (Molokini back wall, Lanai cathedral, Kona manta rays) and were hoping for something on the wilder side. Fathom Five delivered. The hard part is the "commute." It's a 2.5 hr boat ride (each way) from the pier in Poipu. The head on the boat wasn't working the day we visited, which was a scary prospect. But Fathom Five had the innovation of waterproof beanbags, which made the trips as relaxing and enjoyable as they could be. We thought Drake's attentive driving as we battled back into the afternoon trades helped a lot as well. Sean, our guide, was a true pro. He knew everything about the biology above and below water, the geology of the islands, and the history of Niihau. We dove Vertical Awareness first and immediately knew this was going to be special. We were met by an inquisitive sandbar shark as soon as we got to the bottom and soon saw our first (of probably a dozen) monk seals asleep and nestled into the wall. The visibility was essentially infinite. The layers of volcanic sediment result in crevices that are home to lobsters, eels, and nudibranchs. Bring a dive light. The second dive was the Ledges. The rubble from the collapsed wall of the crater is striking. I just remember thinking to myself while I was underwater, this is the best dive I've ever done. The final dive we did was the Arches. A little less visibility. A little less wildlife. But the swim-throughs might have made it the most memorable. Couldn't recommend this dive and these guys enough for a once in a lifetime experience.

Kayak Hanalei is a great activity, and the setup is excellent. We didn't do a tour; we rented our…read moreown kayaks for the day. You park in the back lot, rent your kayaks, and they put them out on ramps leading into the river. You climb in with your gear (a dry bag is a good idea -- you can rent one from them if you don't have your own), and they launch you off. From there it's a picturesque, serene trip upriver to the wildlife sanctuary. We spotted lots of freshwater turtles lounging on branches near the shore, a few herons in the trees, and beautiful scenery the whole way up and back. Fantastic day out. We went the upriver route, but you can also head downriver to Hanalei Bay and back, which is a shorter trip and gives you the option of hanging out and swimming at Hanalei Beach. Don't forget to use ample sunblock and it's a great idea to have a long sleeved swim shirt, wide brimmed hat, and sunglasses. Bringing a towel to cover your legs is also a good idea. You are on top of the kayak in direct sun (or cloud cover UV rays) for 2-3 hours.
