What an amazing dive shop! We decided to capitalize on the warm and beautiful waters of Kauai to get our Advanced Open Water and Enriched Air Diver certifications while on vacation here. From start to finish Fathom Five Divers offered an incredible experience. I picked this shop over the others in the area because their response to my email enquiries were so detailed and helpful. The shop itself is small, but well stocked. Everyone was incredibly welcoming and friendly. Our instructor for the dives was Devon. She was very knowledgeable and patient with our group. She made the dives fun and educational at the same time. Her passion for diving was infectious. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for an instructor or even just a guided dive. For the Enriched Air Diver course our instructor was Reid. He too, was very knowledgable and an excellent teacher. Also, when one of our divers had to cancel one of the course dives they were very accomodating in rescheduling his dive for later. All in all, we felt we were in great hands the entire time, we felt safe, welcome and well attended to!! read more

I ended up on the small boat with a couple of advanced divers, so we got a very personalized experience. Sean and Sergio took us out to some great sites. They were very thorough in their briefings and excellent company. Sergio handled the boat like it was part of him and Sean knows everything about Hawaii and will share it liberally. His favorite word is "endemic" and will find all the local critters for you to see. A suggestion for the snack selections: chips are fine for those who like salty high carb junk foods, but more things like nut or protein bars would be nice. read more

We did 10 dives with them and were disappointed for a few reasons: - Value: This was the most expensive boat dives we've ever done and was a very bare bones experience. If you're going to charge liveaboard like prices, you should deliver service to compete. - Dive change insurance? On top of the high prices, they want even more money for insurance against changes which was ridiculous. On the flip side, there was no discount when they rescheduled on us twice. - Light tanks: My average starting pressure was 2850 for our 10 dives - Dive profile: You basically just do circles around the mooring lines. Because they actively hunt these waters fish and octopus also tend to be very wary of people which means that you're basically looking at the geology (which is cool) and hunting in holes for small stuff. - Nitrox: No analyzers on the boats which is always a frustration - Not letting us set foot on the boat to double check gear setup they are ready to leave. When I didn't double check their setup I found weights in the wrong places, twisted straps and misplaced hoses which was irritating. - Not letting us take our gear off the boats and insisting that they hand them over to us. No big deal if it happened right away, but generally it took a while which led to us to shivering on the dock for 5 minutes while they hosed down gear and worked their checklist before they got to it. - Over communication: I stopped counting at 50 emails and also got several texts which was definitely overkill. On the positive side, the staff is great and we really enjoyed diving with Julie, Devin and Drake. They have a ton of experience and are fun to spend a day with. Overall it was a mixed experience. I'd say 4 or 5 star staff, but a 2 star operation which is where I averaged it out to 3. The smaller dive groups are great and we saw some interesting stuff, but the overall experience wasn't that great. I'd put them more in the "proceed with caution" bucket and would likely try another operation if I came back to Kauai. read more

My husband and I (67 and 65 years old) booked a shore dive with Fathom Five Divers. Reed was our Dive Master and he was incredibly caring, knowledgeable and capable. He was so patient with this old geriatric lady with limited hip and shoulder mobility. And WOW, did he know the area! We saw so many turtles, eels, octopi, and the fish! Even a Flying Gurnard! I did 2 dive trips with them this trip. One 3 tank trip to Nehau, and one 2 tank trip nearby (Fish Bowl & Sheraton Caverns). Both dives were great. Shaun (Nehau) & Reid were great. They really know both the sealife and diving instructions. The ride back from Nehau was wet. They warned us, and they weren't kidding. I'm ok with the wet, but the beanbags just don't work for me. If you are OK with laying down, then they might be OK. On this trip, we had 5 divers. They quickly got the 3 spots with some back support. Fourth one took the whole floor in the center. I ended up with the engine hatch. After 2.5 hours, my lower back was hurting. Really need a better solution. read more

Wow! What a professional crew. Divemaster Julie and Captain Drake took us on two amazing dives. They worked well together, communicating to us efficiently, being professional, exhibiting gear care, and being great leaders. The first dive was great, and Julie obviously (with 1000's of dives under belt) was full of new information. But it was the second dive in the lava tubes that made the day. Sleeping turtles sort of waved at her, we swam past eels, and schools of bright fish. Swimming through caves was one of those photos/videos that is used in advertisements. Expertise, knowledge, care, kindness, gentle humor... all made the experience great! read more

This was our 16th time diving with Fathom Five and just like it always does, it didn't disappoint. Our dive master was Shawn and our captain was Sergio. We've been on trips with both multiple times and they are by far the best we've had at Fathom Five and the island on the whole. Shawn's pre and post dive briefings are incredible. He goes super in depth on all the conditions of the sites and all of the animals we will see. He brings his iPad which he has some great examples of what to look out for. Sergio is incredibly personable, helpful and always seems like he enjoys being there. Fathom Fives amazing crew is definitely part of why we love diving with them. Our last charter we did a two tank twilight boat dive. We dove at lunch plate and Sheraton caverns, two amazing sites. We've done the Sheraton caverns countless times but it was totally different at night. The lights they gave us worked great. We would totally do this charter again. read more

Great experience diving with Fathom Five and an incredible day trip to Niihau, but there were several issues that left us disappointed. Positive aspects: -Wonderful diving and a memorable Niihau experience. -Clear passion for the sport and good underwater sights including sharks, dolphins, seals, tons of fish and more! -Bean bags on board were a great option to maximize the small space. -Guide's historical knowledge on the island and fish photography greatly complemented the diving day experience. Areas for improvement: 1) Staff attentiveness and on-board safety -We observed multiple instances of guests feeling sick, including frequent vomiting. It seemed staff were not consistently attentive or readily available to assist passengers in distress. -The two dive masters could have communicated and checked in more frequently with affected guests. -When safety concerns arose, there didn't appear to be immediate action to address mess or sanitize affected areas. We noted wastewater or ocean water being used to wash vomit, which felt inappropriate and concerning. -The captain and guide appeared preoccupied with other tasks (e.g., a sports game) rather than focusing on boat operations and guest safety. 2) Food storage and allergens -It would be helpful to have a clear system for noting food options, preferences, and any allergens upfront. -We also had concerns about some of the food storage and spoilage risk during the trip; Proper temperature control and handling of food are important to prevent potential illness. 3) Niihau day alignment (equipment and sizing) -We scheduled a pre-Niihau dive to align wetsuit sizing and weights, and were told our sizes/weights from the first dive would be used for Niihau. -In reality, wetsuit sizes and weights were not consistently accurate, which affected buoyancy and comfort during the Niihau dive. 4) In water safety -During the dive, there was a safety concern that was not properly addressed and there was confusing guidance for divers to go up on a line that had no boat attached when they had plenty of air left. Bottom line We loved the diving and the site, but the service and safety practices did not meet our expectations. Given these concerns, we'll consider alternative operators for future trips and recommend others verify attentiveness, safety protocols, and equipment management before booking. read more

Fathom Five Divers was fantastic from the very beginning. They were incredibly accommodating by phone, helping us schedule our dives and making adjustments as needed leading up to dive day. Their communication was clear and friendly, which made everything feel smooth and easy. On the day of the dive, we were lucky to be paired with Cat, our dive instructor. She was patient, responsible, and created a calm and supportive environment. My partner had a little trouble equalizing, but Cat never rushed us or made us feel pressured. She gave us the time we needed and made sure we felt safe and confident every step of the way. Cat was also deeply respectful of the marine environment. She was careful not to disturb anything and encouraged us to be just as thoughtful. Her knowledge of the local marine life was outstanding--she pointed out all kinds of fish and underwater creatures and helped us better understand what we were seeing. We had completed our classroom and pool work back in Oregon and came to Kauai to finish our open water certification through a referral. We could not have asked for a better experience. Everything went well diving with Fathom Five from reserving, paying, checking in, sorting gear, meeting up with dive masters at dive sites, refreshing after 8 years away, and actually diving. The gear they offered for warmth was perfect for the water temp. The wetsuits were clean, fresh, fit well and performed properly. The air and Nitrox were as promised. The gear was clean. The refs and gauges worked well and did not look over used or underserviced. It was good gear. The lamps provided for the night dives were great wrist mount with adequate light strength without too much weight or bulkiness the dive masters briefed their dives and followed their dive plans. (I had been away from diving and instructing for about 8 years to upgrade body parts like knees, hips etc. my dive buddy/ goddaughter was freshly certified. I had an A+ 3 tank dive day with Dive Master Julie and 3rd generation boat Captain Drake. Both were outstanding, experienced and really friendly. We did the specialized 3 Tank dive trip over to Ni'ihau and Fathom Five Divers did not disappoint! At all! Also, we were in for such a treat being able to dive with Janette, the one and only legend! Loni was also great and extremely communicative with me the day before our dive which was SUPER nice because I told him that it was one of our birthdays and if they do anything special and THEY DID! So sweet of them! During lunch, they actually brought out some cupcakes and we all sang Happy Birthday and it was honestly so fun and meant a lot to us that they went out of their way to do that for us. It was a little thing but honestly made our whole day! All of their time stamps were very accurate, too. Which was good because you knew what you were in for prior to getting into it. It was also nice because the group was small, so it felt pretty personal between the dive guides, Julie and Drake, who were both wonderful. You can tell that Julie truly really is passionate about the big deep ocean blue and a fish nerd as she put it, and Drake was helpful because he made it very easy getting in and out of the water as well as in between dives FEEDING US! We did the two tank dive in the morning with Sean. It was after the storm, but it's still ended up being quite pleasant dive, and Sean was able to point us out lots of endemic species and gave us a bunch of history about the islands and how the reefs were formed. We were given 3000 psi tanks and dive times were anywhere from 40 to 55 minutes on air usage. Even though some of the others wanted to ascend, we were able to stick around a little longer underwater. read more

A little history first: I started diving with Jeannette and Fathom Five in 1993! A few years later in 2011 I organized a family Discovery Dive with my adult children. Yesterday we did the same family Discovery Dive which included my grandchildren! Jeannette, owner and dive master, and her team are wonderful instructors and guides. Since we don't dive every year, we find that the Discovery dive serves as a refresher for those of us who are certified and allows the younger family members to experience their first dives. Yesterday Jeannette and Carlea made sure we all felt safe and comfortable in our first dive. That was an accomplishment since we range in age from 11 to 80! Carlea paired with our 11 year old. Carlea's style of teaching and encouragement allowed our granddaughter to dive with the whole family. Jeannette's ability to spot little problems and remedy them quickly helped all of us have amazing dive experiences. Jeannette also helped us see some great sea creatures: leaf scorpions, frog fish, eels, turtles. etc! My 7 year old grandson has decided that he wants to dive with his grandma when she's 80! read more

Our guide Devyn and captain Sergio were amazing! Wind and current were a bit more than desired, but they did a great job getting us in the most protected areas and checking in with us the entire time. I'm still in the beginner phase of diving and was diving by myself (no buddies). Devyn was fantastic! Checking in on me, making sure I was good and comfortable, and making sure we all got a chance to see the awesome things she found on the reefs. Devyn and Sergio checked with other dive groups to get more up to date current conditions to ensure we had a good 2nd dive as well. Saw a couple pods of dolphins on the way to our 2nd stop and Sergio slowed down, did a couple of big loops so everyone got a chance to see them. Amazing. Overall an amazing experience, would dive with them again if I had family with me or not. read more

I am a certified diver and wanted my fiance to try it out. We booked a discovery dive with fathom five. They were amazing. The day we were supposed to dive we got a call from the shop saying it was slightly rougher waters than normal and let us reschedule to the next day no charge. Reid took us on a dive and was super patient with our group and my fiance. Even though she couldn't clear her ears to actually do the dive he was very patient and didn't make her feel bad but encouraged her to try again a different day. During my two trips to Kauai spent two days each diving with Fathom Five. So glad I went with them. They don't dive with a large group like some other companies do, which was nice so you don't feel crowded or rushed. Our dive master Julie was extremely knowledgeable and picked some great dive sites for us to explore as well. And I always appreciate when I see the staff care for the ocean and pick up things that don't belong to help preserve the beautiful ocean. And my last trip earlier this month Bob was the DM. Older gentleman but extremely careful and caring of the divers. He was so patient with two green divers and also on a day with all experienced divers took us out in Kippu Kai to explore some place new. I did rent a bcd and reg as part of my dives. The reg comes with a dive computer if you don't have one. I also recommend double checking your air before entering the water.. one of my dives I started with 2500 psi vs 3000 That's my one negative and my lesson learned. But I still saw a lot and got some great bottom time. All in all I was really happy with my dives and the DMs. I'd highly recommend them for future dives read more

My 13 year old son and I dove with the Fathom 5 dive shop on June 11, 2025. The check in at the dive shop was very easy and the QR code direction to the boat made the drive to the harbor easy. The dive shop is super organized and clean. We did not rent any dive equipment but the rental equipment looked great. We met Sergio (Dive Boat Captain) and Shaun (Divemaster / Guide) at the boat ramp. They both did an excellent job of letting us know the safety features of the boat and how the dive day would proceed. Great pre-briefing by both Shaun and Sergio. I really appreciated the fact they let us decide if we wanted to put our equipment together or if we wanted them to do it for us. Since I was diving with my 13 year old son, I want him to continue to learn and to practice setting up his own equipment. My son and I enjoyed two great dives together off the coast of Kauai. The first lasted 56 minutes and the second lasted 61 minutes giving my son some quality underwater time. Sergio was great to be around above water and Shaun was a great underwater guide and above water I enjoyed learning more about the marine life we were able to see. Dave read more
