Captain J's Nāpali coast tour was nothing short of amazing. Originally I wanted to go on a smaller adventure raft where you sit on the side and hold on to the ropes. My husband wanted a more relaxed trip so we decided on the raft boat that had seats. Man am I glad we did! We had a choppy day on the water and it was a crazy ride out to the coast. But I felt totally capable in the hands of Nono and Jeff who were our captains. Nono knew how to ride the waves and made sure we had a safe and fun time on the water. The views of the Napali coast are breathtaking. We went on the morning ride and in hindsight, the afternoon would have had better lighting to view the Kalalau Valley, as we had the sun coming up behind the mountains once we got there. Still got some amazing shots of the cliffs. The sea was too rough to enter the cave completely but Nono still got us in enough to experience the thrill in a safe manner. We saw spinner dolphins and some bottle nose dolphins doing flips and jumping out of the water. The snorkeling was great-we even swam with a sea turtle. The crew was helpful, making sure everyone was okay with snacks and drinks. It was an adventurous day in the water!! read more

Nono and Cannon were awesome. We did the afternoon Napali Coast tour. Gotta snorkel on the south end of the island. Saw a couple turtles and some awesome fish. We went into a couple sea caves with were so cool to see. The navigation was impeccable. If you have a bad back or get sea sick, you may want to skip it. Best thing to do in Kauai was this!!! Can't explain how amazing the tour was and how great Matt (the guy on the ship) was. Not only was the boat amazing, Matt did a great job of making everyone feel welcome. In my opinion, this was better than the helicopter ride. Beware, you will feel like you're on a 4 hour roller coaster with one hour snorkeling adventure. Wasn't promised but we got to see MANY fish while snorkeling, sea turtles, dolphin, whales (multiple) and the full Nāpali coastline. read more

We had a great time on the NaPali tour! Nohili was a great captain and Cannon was both an an awesome DJ and a great guide, explaining the significance of all the locations along the tour. It's always a treat to learn from true locals. The boats were a perfect balance. We still got to zip along and fit in the sea caves like the zodiacs, while not being too crazy bumpy or wet. And the bathroom on board was so clutch on a 5 hour tour. The snorkel masks weren't quite as nice as the other one we went on in Maui. Highly recommend this tour, as well as Nohili and Cannon! read more

I was dreading getting up at 6 to make it to Captain J's super raft Napoli Coast tour as we needed to be there 45 minutes early for the @7:30 start time. But when we got to the store front, the dread went away when I saw other people looking enthusiastic to get going. There were 24 people (28 is the max) in our group and it felt like a perfect amount. Captain Andrew and Shane (the guide) briefed us quickly before we took off, and made sure we were well informed during the rest of the trip. Today we were lucky to have mild waves and crystal clear water. We saw many spinner dolphins which was exciting as they travelled in a giant pod. During the snorkeling session, we saw many colorful fish and some sea turtles. Captain Andrew and Shane were very patient and helped everyone get in and out of the water. Since everyone was on time and the conditions were perfect, we were able to go a little further north and see more sea caves, which was pretty magical. Overall, we had a blast and would totally recommend the tour to anyone. read more

My first experience ever at the sea and on a boat. This place is fantastic. The captain Jay and his assistant Noah make this experience the best of my life. The boat was very equipped for an emergency. The tour shows everything you need to know about the island. Because the boat wasn't big, we can enter into caves to see how wonderful God is and his creation. They stopped and people snorkeling. Tour is aprox 4 hours in a half. Let me start by saying that this company, from start to finish, really helped create the best experience for us here on Kaua'i. Every crew member we had (6 different ones), and the front desk ladies were amazing. They created a great environment. This company really cares about you getting what you paid for - which is an awesome time out on the water & seeing the most you can. The boats are very nice, and while the trip doesn't have a lot of fancy embellishments - I preferred that. So here I go in my in-depth review of our 3 trips out with Captain J's! When we first landed we saw this advertised in the airport. I had done a lot of research on different boat tours, but hadn't seen anything that really fit the bill in my mind. I had some older members in my party that weren't interested in a "holding onto the raft" zodiac rides (which I love), and I wasn't interested in a overly expensive catamaran trip... When we saw that their boats were a nice compromise between the two, we decided to book with them! We started with a whale watch. Our first crew members were Landon & Matt. They were great, but the whales just were not preforming. In fact, we didn't see a single one! And you can't control nature! But then Captain J's really shined through... they worked with us to get booked again! I have never EVER had a tour do this. It really made an impression that they cared about you getting the experience you paid for. So we rebooked for later in our trip. It was at this point we decided we wanted to do a Napli Coast tour. Now while this may change, at this time, if you booked this tour with them and they had to reroute, you could choose not to go and get a refund. Based on the research I had done, I did not see this offered by any other tour! And winter in Kauai - the weather on that coast is very unpredictable, so I appreciated this! We then went on our second whale tour with our favorite crew!!! CJ & Nohili! They were absolutely fantastic and were so much fun. We saw at least 10 whales, and had such a great time. It really was a blast. The next morning we got up early for our coast tour. Now - let me say: the waters on the coast were serious. Ryan, our captain - handled the water great, but if you're wondering if you can handle the weather, I would suggest giving serious consideration to if you can handle this trip in the winter. The two older members of our party did not do this trip, and I think that was the best decision. As their website says, this is an adventure tour! So be prepared for one! On the coast trip we saw more whales, hundreds of dolphins, and the coast was breathtaking. In the morning, the sun starts filtering through the cliffs, and with the sea mist rising - the area looks fierce. It was quite a sight to behold. Afterward, they took us back to smoother water, to a nice area to snorkel. It wasn't anything over the top amazing, but there was plenty of sea life and more coral than I had seen in other parts of the island. Light snacks and drinks are provided, and you can always bring additional food. Like I said - no frills, but I wasn't interested in paying $75-100 more for a nicer lunch. Over take-aways: This is a no frills tour that centers on the adventure. The staff is great, and focuses on giving you the best experience possible. I am so glad we found this tour group, and booking with them really completed our trip to Kaua'i. Mahalo to the entire Captain J's team! read more

On July 4th, 2025, my sister (Veronica) & I went on Captain J's Tour of the NaPali Coast (afternoon trip). It was excellent & I highly recommend it! Nono & Kahena were our captains/tour guides. They were extremely friendly, knowledgeable, funny, kind, & took safety seriously. We learned a lot & saw a lot! Thankfully, the weather & waves were great that day so we were able to also go snorkeling & go into the cave. The entire trip was amazing and the scenery breathtaking. Ryan and Jeff are great. We went out on a breezy day and were surprised by a long bout of whale viewing during our Na Pali coast trek. They patiently let us watch the events until the "ooooh's and aaahh's" gave way to more subdued watching, and then steered us off to the coast as intended. Great and fun excusion. read more

Honestly one of the best activities I've done . We had a ride scheduled with another company and we were canceled the day off . We called the receptionist of Captain J's so last minute and she was able to get us in . We were a bit nervous about it being a raft but I'm honestly so glad it was . Our captain CJ and guide Matt were so nice and knowledgeable. CJ somehow outran the rain all day and got us to every spot . Matt was so helpful and shared so much knowledge. Also stopped to see goats on the hillside and lots of dolphins plus 1 turtle. The ride was not as bad as some people stated. We did not take Dramamine and my 82 year old mother was just fine. Had a fantastic afternoon out on the water with Noihui (NoNo) and Max. So much fun! We started off getting to see a monk seal out at sea. So cute. We got to see whales spouting and whale tails. We also had an exciting group of spinner dolphins usher us back to port. Nono was very knowledgeable about whales and Max was fun to chat with. They were very accommodating for a fellow passenger who didn't take to sea waves well and made sure he was well taken care of. Absolutely a must do with this company! Captain Andrew and Matt were the best hosts you can imagine! My family of 5 had the best time. Great and comfortable boat, super fast, great music playlist while we were in full send mode. Matt knew just what to do when our 10 year old started feeling a little queasy and helped her not get sick (it happens more often to people than you think)-and Matt kept checking on her the rest of the trip which she didn't have anymore issues. The caves rides and views were epic with a good amount of Hawaiian knowledge shared by both Captain Andrew and Matt. We were so lucky to see dolphins, turtles, many fish, and a monk seal and baby seal. Snorkeling was really good, and easy process. We got handed fins based on our foot size once we reached our site, then handed a mask and snorkel, and easy jump from the boat to water. Captain Andrew and Matt once again sprung into action to help the little ones and some older people move around the boat with their assistance. After the swim, it was a quick shower rinse, snacks and drinks, and we were headed back to Port Allen. We would sign up for this again in a heartbeat! Logistics Note: you will take off your shoes when you get to the dock and not see them until ride is over. Don't bring spray sunscreen, bring lotion from a squirt tube (it deteriorates the inflatable tubes and makes the deck slippery). They provide a dry bag once you get in your seat for the boat ride, give it back at the end. Also, bring cash to tip (you can use Venmo too)-this crew works hard and did a phenomenal job! read more

Went on a whale watching tour and had a great time! The super raft boat was incredibly fast and smooth (though I took a dramamine in advance, I know there was someone on our tour who got seasick). Captain Andrew did his best to find whales and we saw a ton! They provide snacks and drinks and there is a toilet on board. Things to know: Bring some cash to be able to tip the Captain and his mate at the end of the tour. Of course they can't control the weather, so plan accordingly (bring ponchos for Hawaiian rain). This being said, it rained before our tour and the seats (though they flipped them over) were very wet so it wasn't so fabulous to sit on a wet cushion for 2 hours. The captain was generous and stayed out a bit later than two hours since it was the last tour of the evening. They play music on board, which was nice to an extent but also prevented us from really hearing any whale noises and their spouts. This tour was more about finding the whales, there wasn't an extensive breakdown of information/learning other than where they came from, what they were doing here, and how long they usually stayed. I wish I learned more but that was about all that was shared about it (unless I missed hearing about it since I was at the front of the boat and the captain was at the back). To be desired: we had originally booked a 3:45 whale watch tour and we were called at 11:30ish to let us know due to lack of staff our tour was cancelled. We were offered a 1pm tour instead, but we were busy. Luckily we were able to move things around and take the tour the next day instead, but for others who are have a stricter schedule this would be really problematic. read more

The most memorable day in Kauai was with Captain J's. We did the afternoon Nāpali snorkeling tour, but it ended up being so much more. We saw several pods of whales, dolphins and monk seals. Our captain Landen and deck hand Matt were so attentive and took multiple detours to admire the magnificent marine life. The views of Napali are breathtaking and learning the history of the local culture was fascinating. Landen was able to expertly navigate into sea caves and waterfalls giving us the full experience. Easy check-in, thorough safety brief for the boat ride and snorkeling. The entire experience would not have been the same without our two excellent guides, No-no, and Kena. Both were knowledgeable of the landmarks and the islands history! The crew was very attentive during snorkeling in the open water. Captain No-no's control of the boat taking correct angles and throttle management when driving through the big swells in the open ocean was not only impressive but made for a pleasant boat ride/experience. Our morning boat ride with Captain Andrew and Matt was the perfect way to kick off our week in Kauai! They were not only incredibly knowledgeable but also super kind and welcoming. We learned so much about the area and even got to see some dolphins! We visited in mid-December, so the waters were a little rough at times, but they were very upfront about what to expect. Super raft tour was awesome, I recommend without hesitation!! The tour included two guides, one was mainly a driver and the other had great comments about the history of the beautiful nature surrounding us and was a great photographer. They were so knowledgeable about the water and picked an AWESOME snorkel place that even had sea turtles! I know the morning tour is early, but it was so worth it because we saw several dolphin pods and the dolphins even did some jumps and twists in the air for us!!!
