    The boat!
    Sarah T.

Diving with Garden Isle Divers is a fantastic experience - to quote Eric, the dive master and one of the two owners, "Best in Show". He and his partner Carrie take such good care of their dive groups, and its easy to see that they are passionate about what they do. One of the running themes of our dives when I joined was that what is considered "best" is going to vary, based on personal tastes in various categories. That rang true to me (hence the following review will be arranged as such), with the caveat that I've never had a bad day if I'm able to scuba. :) Dive Group Size: When I joined them on 8/16, it was as a solo diver with ~100+ dives under my belt, renting all my equipment, with my last dive ~1 year ago. We met on at the Port Allen docks, where their boat was moored, and I found out that it would just be 3 of us diving. The website had indicated the max dive groups were capped at 6; this enables Eric and Carrie to customize the dive experience to the people on board. The other two people diving with me were a couple whose last dives were 15 years ago -- clearly a disparate experience, but not something that phased Eric at all. He was extremely thoughtful and thorough about doing a quick refresher overview for them, as well as walking us through all of the equipment on the boat to make sure we were comfortable with their kit (more on that later). Equipment: I mentioned that I rented all of my equipment. Historically I bring (at least) my own boots, wet suit (if needed), fins, mask, snorkel, and "emergency stuff" (sausage, whistle, etc). This trip I decided not to, and instead rolled the dice on using Garden Isle's kit. It was a great decision. The masks were well maintained, and not overly scuffed. The fins were boot-fins, as opposed to slide ons, so no blisters. The BCDs were integrated with weight pouches as opposed to having to deal with weight-belts/lead (and bruised hip bones). The octopus/regulators were dialed in such that they had very easy airflow (no sucking/extra effort needed), and were color coded so that you didn't run the risk of accidentally using someone else's kit. Very pleased with all of it. Dive Sites: This is one of the categories that I think Garden Isle Divers really sings. We dove two locations on my trip - Poke Bowl and Hale O Honu (Turtle House) - and both were absolutely teeming with life. Naturally, you can't guarantee what you're going to see on ANY dive, but man, Eric has eagle eyes and we saw so many incredible things. At Poke Bowl, we started with several (large) green turtles. We also saw three different varieties of nudibranch, two different kinds of eel, a rare variety of puffer (guinea fowl), angelfish, frog fish, Hawaiian sergeants, and the others saw dolphin (I was distracted by other stuff). It was 47' max depth and I got 62 minutes of bottom time. Heaven! You'd think that couldn't be topped, but we meandered over to Hale O Honu (Turtle House), which felt like it was 5 minutes from Poke Bowl (who knows... we were all chatting... it was a fast ride). Once again, there were several green turtle waiting to greet us. Then, we descended an started wandering around, we saw more nudibranch, frog fish, an octopus, two eagle rays, barracuda, coronet fish, loads of beautiful cowries, Hawaiian sand dollars, lion fish, and a striped sea snake-eel that was out hunting (and spooked the heck out of two stouts just trying to live their best lives). This dive was 62' max depth and I got 65 minutes of dive time. Intangibles: Okay, I know this is getting long, but there needed to be another category to catch all the random thoughts that didn't fit anyplace else. First, Eric is an encyclopedia of fish, coral, invertebrate, and geological knowledge. That's awesome for nerds like me who want to learn while they dive. He carries a write-on board so that he can give details underwater, not just the perfunctory hand signals (which of course are also used). So if you like that sort of dive experience, he kicks it up to the next level. Second, Carrie, is a treasure. She makes the boat ride smooth/comfortable as the captain but she ALSO runs around getting everything set up and broken down for the dive, down to helping put on your fins so you don't have to bend over. Like, that's next level luxury as far as I'm concerned. All told, considering the above, it's a best in show dive experience, and one that I'm looking forward to returning to. I told my husband about my diving experience today, and he actually said he might like to come back with me (instead of golfing... and he LOVES golf). Guess this means its already time to plan our 2023 trip to Kauai. Thanks for everything, Eric & Carrie!!!

BEAUTIFUL REEF!! Everyone told me Kaua'i didn't have worthwhile corals. They were wrong.

They can't guarantee that they'll find you an octopus, but...they found me one on my first dive ;) Definitely booking with Garden Isle Divers again in the future, and you should, too. Eric and Carrie are fantastic! I went on two boat trips with them for a total of four dives. These were my first boat dives. Eric and Carrie were super professional about helping us into our gear and teaching me how to enter the water. Eric is incredibly knowledgable about the life found around Kauai. He is a self-styled 'fish nerd', and boy does he know his stuff! I told him I wanted to find my first octopus, and as stated above, he didn't promise that we'd find one, but he also said we'd look! Within the first 15 minutes of our first dive, BOOM! Hawaiian Day Octopus. I also asked Eric if we could look for a white-tip reef shark and a frogfish. He took us directly to where they were. He also showed us a huge red hairy hermit crab, Hawaiian Red Lionfish, Pyramid Butterflyfish, and so many other amazing species. Basically, he showed me everything I told him I'd like to see, plus so much more. Mahalo Captain Carrie and Divemaster Eric!

    Great boat dive!

We had two fabulous dives with Eric and Carrie! Eric was so knowledgeable about all things underwater. He scouted out two perfect spots to dive. He kept diving down to check things out before he would drop anchor. I really like that he only books one trip a day so there was no rushing. The spots had great viz and we even saw a white tip reef shark! We definitely will be back on the boat with Garden Isle the next time we are in Kauai! And thank you to his friend Paul for the great pics and the darling necklace from Bella!

Fun and education on the boat!

Amazing day and Eric and Carrie are wonderful! We will totally do this again when we're back in Kauai!!

Eric is so informative & thinks of everything! 2 tank dives with all gear rental available along with snacks, ice cold water & drinks provided on a reserved spot with chairs. Had a shore dive on Kōloa Landing & it did not disappoint. Saw white tip reef shark, several honus (turtles), eels & many tropical fish. Mahalo!

We had an amazing diving experience with Eric and Garden Isle Divers. We had three certified and four noncertified divers (ages 17, 16, 16, 13). First, the booking process was extremely easy. I was able to pick up the phone and speak with someone who helped facilitate the reservation. The communication all along was outstanding. Then, on the morning of a dive, July 11, 2022, everything continue to go smoothly. We met with Eric and he had all of the gear in equipment ready for us. Everything fits perfectly and worked out just fine. The instruction provided to the non-certified divers was informative, useful, and easy to understand. They had sufficient knowledge to safely dive. Then, once we got into the water, 'Erik showed us around the bay and we saw a lot of interesting sites (e.g., turtles, eels, Spanish era anchors, etc.). I felt very safe in everyone in our group received plenty of attention. No one was going to be left behind. Overall, the experience was outstanding. We will definitely come back and do it again. Next time, we are taking all the certified divers and going out on Eric's boat.

Shannon picked us up. We came to Kauai October 2014 on Crown Princess. We were there only 1 day and all dive shops advised that we docked too late to go on any of their boat dives. The few that would do beach dives required us to get to them. Shannon picked us up at the cruise port. They would only let her in the gate to where the car rental shuttles were picking people up, but we found each other and got off to a great start. She drove a long way with a short stop at a dive shop to a great cove that seemed to be an old boat ramp drive in entry. We suited up and she had us plan the dive to dive the rim of the cove one side and go across to dive the rim of the cove coming back into shore on the other side. The fish were great ... so were both turtles. She pointed out a scorpion fish hiding in a coral fan. It was an awesome dive. She would have done a 2 tank dive if we had wanted to. Price: $125 and that included everything, all equipment, snacks, fruit juices, including driving us there and back to the ship. I HIGHLY recommend Shannon. Captain Kai was competent, informative, and very funny, as was crewmember Vayden, and Collin's mai tais are not to be missed. Some things to be aware of: This cruise is on a catamaran; some of our party were expecting a small cruise ship that would have been a smoother ride. Waves are bumpy, and the windier parts of the trip resembled a mild roller coaster--if that's not your thing or you know you can experience some motion sickness, please factor that into your decision to book a trip. That being said, one person in our party experienced some light motion sickness and was really well cared for by the crew. We really appreciated their kindness and support. If you have sturdy sea legs and an adventurous spirit, I'd highly recommend this excursion. The views of Kauai from the ocean are worth it alone, but the information from the captain and crew about the island and its culture are also super valuable. The whole experience also felt very safe; the cruise will not go to areas with high wind/surf, and on our trip the captain explained why he was turning out of the wind/waves when he made that decision.

We saw multiple breaches, tail slaps, fluke dives, and surface activity--the whales were active the entire time. The crew positioned the boat so well that we were able to stay in one great viewing spot and still see everything without moving around. The crew was incredibly attentive without being overbearing. Drinks and snacks were always taken care of--Mai Tais, coconut cookies, and snacks kept coming--and it genuinely felt effortless to just relax and enjoy the experience. The team was knowledgeable, calm, and respectful of the whales, offering helpful context without over-talking. The boat was comfortable, well run, and the two-hour length felt just right. We were originally a group of 7 (4 adults, 3 kids) but there weren't enough spots available. After booking online, Ryan promptly called to confirm and I explained that we needed 3 more spots. No problem. He added our friends and reached out to them as well to coordinate and didn't even take their payment in advance. About a week before our dive, Ryan called again to explain the upcoming weather (including a couple of big swell days) to see if we could switch days for better conditions. Despite his many other bookings, Ryan went above and beyond to accommodate ALL of us. It was at this time that I mentioned that my 9 year old scuba/snuba obsessed Autistic son wasn't the best swimmer and that he also had gotten a cold which we agreed might compromise his ability to equalize pressure at any depth. Admittedly, both of my kids had colds the week before leaving the mainland and this could have completely compromised our ability to even get to Kauai! Thankfully, our Covid tests all came back negative and we had no travel issues. Sadly, however, my son's congestion didn't much improve and I alerted Ryan by text that he and my wife would likely need to cancel. In the couple of days leading to the dive, I sent another few texts saying that we were going to show up and have my son try to equalize and then rescinded upon better judgment, despite the looming tantrum when we had to officially tell my son he couldn't do the dive. So when all was said and done, our reservation for 7 became a reservation for 4 as my wife, my son and my buddy's wife all had to cancel. And then my 11-year old daughter started getting nervous and threatened to cancel as well. Ryan graciously handled my back and forth calls and texts with professionalism and compassion. The location for the dive at Lawai Beach (Beach House Restaurant) is very easy to find and there is ample free parking directly across the street, either on the street or in a parking lot right there. There's also a public restroom and a neat little snack shack which was perfect for grabbing hotdogs, ice cream and really good shave ice after the dive. We met Ryan and his team at the Snuba Van which was parked right across from the beach and they outfitted us with gear and thoroughly explained the rules of diving to the kiddos and tailored them simply so the kids could understand (my buddy and I are already seasoned scuba divers). My daughter's nerves seemed to ease with Ryan's calm and friendly reassurance that we weren't going too deep or too far and that the mostly enclosed bay was perfectly safe. So in we went...the 4 of us and Ryan and his 2 wonderful assistants which clearly was a great ratio to ensure that our kids were well taken care of while my buddy and I could also enjoy the dive. At the beginning of the dive, my daughter had a tendency to float at the top with the float, dip below for a few breaths only to return to the float. After I mentioned to her that she should stay down, she did just that and we had an amazing 50+ minute dive together. LET ME JUST TELL YOU...diving is a wonderful hobby that takes you to another realm. Diving alongside your 11 year old daughter as she discovers how amazing it is and seeing the nervousness slip away with the current and replaced with fascination and absolute joy is an experience I will remember until the day I die. Ryan and his team were wonderful guides underwater. They had heard that a turtle had been spotted in the area just before our dive but try as they might, it had eluded them. But in the last 5 minutes of the dive, my daughter and I rounded an outcropping of coral to find it hiding underneath! What amazing luck! Ryan and SNUBA Tours of Kauai made for us an absolutely epic adventure. They took care of absolutely everything for us as a solid tour company should and went above and beyond to make everything absolutely perfect. Oh, by the way, Ryan took a bunch of photos of us all throughout the dive. Did he try to sell these to us for some extra dough like so many other tours? NOPE. He texted them to us within hours after the dive. And when I apologized again about all the back and forth with the reservation and the cancelations prior to the dive and mentioned that I understood that I'd be out the money for my wife and son's spots, Ryan very generously and graciously only charged me for me and my daughter. Tip top notch! A++++++++ experience.

Then another, an hour before our departure. AND THE BOAT RIDE WAS GREAT. I was all smiles and adventure and breathing -in the ocean air and wind! Unlike, a few folks, who were NOT doing so well. (One or two barfed over the side, but thankfully I didn't notice. Know how your body handles boats and waves. Don't do tours like this, without proper prep. It will NOT be fun if you underestimate it.) Check-In staff was super friendly, and personal. They remembered me from my original email. Sweet. Parking was easy. Shuttles team was super friendly. The strangers we rode with, all turned out to be cool. 2 boats go out (mini-catamarans, with cover from the sun). They expertly traverse the waves, and cliffs, and the caves, giving you some amazing first-hand visuals and photos. But yeah, that boat will be a rockin', during those up-close cave moments. Spoiler: You probably won't see whales, unless you're there before May. But we DID see a cute pod of Dolphins, who cozy'd up to our boat for a while. Our boat had Casey and Spencer. They were wise beyond their years, in all things Kauai. Funny and friendly. Spencer navigated the heck out of those waves, while Casey handled the nauseous passengers with MOTHERLY CARE. Spencer was 50/50 on allowing us to snorkel, based on conditions and a previous scare, a few weeks prior. But he ultimately made the call to GET IN THE WATER. He wisely kept us on a leash (not literally), whistling at swimmers when they got too close to a reef (with waves that could wash you onto the reef). It was fun and chill. Steven also shared a lot of stories and cultural backgrounds about Wailua River and parts of the trail leading up to Secret Falls. We were provided with double-kayaks, and my partner and I were able to get through the somewhat rough stretch of Wailua River, though we often fell behind the others (haha!) but thankfully we did not flip over into the water! It's about 40-45 minutes in each direction and there is a designated section at the trailhead where we will leave our kayaks. Lots of other tour groups and those hiking and paddling independently! It had been a few years since kayaking a longer distance; the last time for me was Flat Island and Mokulua Islands in Kailua on Oahu in January 2017. As for the trail itself, yes it is muddy here and there and can be slippery. Therefore, it is best to use closed-toe water shoes and a hiking stick, as you will have to cross through at least 5 streams along the way and depending on the weather and other factors, the water level can get up to the knees or even waist-high and the currents can be strong too! The wet season is certainly a good time to see Uluwehi Falls (Secret Falls) at its finest! My oh my was it flowing! Lots of other people came to take a dip in the water, and eat their lunch nearby. Be aware, there are lots of feral chickens in the area so you really have to keep an eye on your food, otherwise they will literally steal it if you are not paying attention! When we got back to Kayak Kauai's main offices and store, we all had some delicious pineapple, and definitely much-needed after a long excursion! Overall, this is such a great experience and I would totally recommend it!
