Chris guided me through sizing, how to use the gear, and what type of products he uses and why. I added some chairs too. His prices are SO reasonable. The fun of a vacation is the interesting locals you meet. I've gotta say that Chris, the owner/operator of Kauai Bound, is a delightful guy! He is cheerful, knowledgeable, and gave us great advice - and terrific, clean, high level gear! We have now rented from his shop TWICE and will do it again, too. The fins, mask, snorkel, carry bag, lens defogger, and even fish identification card were in pristine condition. He visually sized us up so everything fit perfectly, and he had us double test it in the shop. He gave us great advice on where to go and showed us his live feed surf cams to back up his point. He also rents golf clubs, beach chairs, boogie boards, and other related items. His rates were great for the week. Drop off was super easy on our way back to the airport. What a fantastic shop! We rented the snorkeling gears from Sylvia, she took her time to help get all the fitting right, and recommended this banana looking float belt that ended up being super helpful for our 6 and 8 year old girls. On top of the gears, we also got the anti-fog solution as a part of the rental package, this worked wonders. Sylvia also gave us great tips on where to go, including specific part of the beaches, and also her recommendations on where to eat. We even got tips on local traffic and what to avoid! Since we weren't sure whether our girls will be able to snorkel much or simply whether they will even enjoy the activity, Sylvia said they'll switch the daily rental to weekly if we end up keeping the gears for more than four days (which at that point, weekly rental would be cheaper). Upon returning the gear, Chris (owner) saw all the notes that Sylvia had kept in the system, and changed the price to weekly rental right away. Both Chris and Sylvia are fantastic people, and I highly recommend getting your gears here. Snorkeling literally was the absolute best part of being in Kauai for us, we ended up snorkeling all but one day during our week long trip. If you have little ones, we believe the best bet is to have them learn at Lydgate, then head over to Poipu Beach once they get a hang of things. We were traveling on a cruise to multiple islands and were scheduled to make a snorkeling excursion in Kona when the swell blocked operation of the tenders and thus resulting in the cancellation of the port visit. We scrambled in vain to book a replacement in Kauai (The next and final port) to no avail. We decided to go it on our own. A search of the available snorkeling rental shops led me to Kauai Bound. It was extremely convenient when on a cruise. located right by Kalapaki Beach on Rice St. with easy access either by shuttle to the beach from the port or by car. There was ample parking right next door. Very easy to get in and out. The shop was small but loaded with absolutely first-class gear at a reasonable price and great rental terms. Renting a day means returning by the close of the following day. The owner (Christopher Holmes) was fabulous. He is first class customer service personified. He explained all the gear: why it was the right choice, all the features, what steps to take to fit masks, supplied anti-fogging agent, explained its use, how the purge valves on the snorkels worked, fitting masks, fins, etc. He took numerous extra steps that went above and beyond just renting gear. He then took the time to explain where to go, what to expect there, where to enter the water, where to get out, what to see around each location, and even offered suggestions for lunch spots and other very helpful things that were fantastic for someone who is brand new to the area. Even better, all of his advice was right on the money. We saw turtles, dozens of different species of fish, great video w/ our go pro to revisit later, had simple entry to the water, zero fogging of masks, had a great lunch, and had a wonderful time. Getting out of the water I had not remembered his exit point and boy I wish I had. It was very difficult amongst the coral and lava rocks. After exit, I remembered his words and wished I had remembered, so take heed of his advice. Return of the gear was inordinately simple and he was very gracious and thankful for our business. I will return each and every time I go to Kauai to patronize this business. Choose Kauai Bound. You will not regret it. read more
