Jacci took the time to explain everything as it was our first trip/ time surfing and Ka'ula quickly became my son's favorite instructor ... we came back 3 times total! He was up and surfing almost immediately day 1! Ka'ula was an outstanding instructor; both encouraging and supportive. How do you adequately say thank you to someone who teaches your significant other how to surf so that she now understands what all you've been talking about in that surfing will change your life. That is what I owe to both Ka'ula, and Jacci. Aloha Surfing School is where you want to take your surfing lessons. Ka'ula is immensely patient and a skilled, adaptable educator who can adjust the lesson plan to accommodate any student. Additionally, there is no better surfing backdrop than Hanalei Bay on the North shore of Kaua'i. After spending a little bit of time on dry land education perfecting the pop-up, Tammy was in the water catching waves within minutes. I recorded over a dozen waves ridden clear to the beach. The enormity of her smile was unparalleled, and she was now totally hooked on surfing. After her surf lesson, she was good and tired, and we chilled the rest of the day. She loved looking over the videos of her surfing. I cannot recommend Aloha Surfing School, Ka'ula, and Jacci highly enough. Rest assured that you will have a fantastic time and leave with the fondest of memories, and this will be the highlight of your trip to Kaua'i. We are already looking to plan a return trip and plan on staying in Hanalei versus Kapa'a, which we called base camp on this trip, as all Tammy wants to do now is continue to surf and get better at it. I'd give them 6 stars, if I could!! Our two sons, ages 15 and 12, took surf lessons at Aloha Surfing School during our family vacation in June, 2024. We were advised by a local beach lifeguard that this was the place to take lessons because the owners were "good people" and he was definitely right. From our first interactions with Jacci & Ka'ula (owners) in their booth conveniently located in the Ching Young Village Shopping Center, we knew our boys would be well taken care of. Jacci took the time to explain everything and even advised us which day would be the best conditions since we had flexibility on which day we took lessons. The day of the lesson, Ka'ula and Roy (our sons' instructor) drove our boys to Hanalei Bay in their UTV, which they thought was pretty cool. After explaining the basics on land, Roy got them into the water and, with his help and guidance, they were both able to stand up on their first or second attempt. Roy was an outstanding instructor; both encouraging and supportive. Both boys said the surf lessons were their favorite part of the vacation! From start to finish our experience with Aloha Surfing felt like we were hanging out with friends. Setting up the training date and time was quick and easy. We arrived and were met with smiles and the girls were set up with rash guards before we all were driven out to the surf site. The girls were provided with clear instructions and some practice on land before getting into the water. Paid this guy $430 for a family private lesson and get yelled at for arriving 5 minutes before for a scheduled "private"departure. He was totally rude and said "you get what you pay for" and "he's the owner of the business" after I told him we were getting off on the wrong foot. I was hoping for a nice family experience and the owner was exactly what a "locals only" surf jerk was portrayed in Point Break. Totally ruined my expectations of a nice family experience. He did get my wife on standing on several waves and my kid was up as he had some board experience. read more

Highly recommend! My family and I spent the day relaxing on the beach at Hanalei Bay (no intention to surf at that time), and after basically spending the day watching different surfing instructors, I was really impressed with the smaller group sizes (mostly 2-3 people), the quality of the instruction, and Ka'ula's vibe. I decided to sign my daughter and I up for a 90 minute lesson the next day and Jackie was able to squeeze us in. It turned out to be the highlight of our time on the island! Spent the start of my first full day in Hawaii and 30th birthday learning to surf! Approached the stand (which is conveniently located in the Ching Young Village Shopping center) on a whim and was greeting by the friendly owners Jacci and Ka'ula. They supplied a rash guard top, surf board, and transportation to Hanalei Bay. I tried surfing once in LA and wasn't able to get on the board. This was my second attempt and it was a success! The lesson started with some instruction on the sand then we made our way to the water to apply the techniques. Couldn't have asked for a more positive and encouraging instructor in expert surfer Ka'ula! The couple also surprised me with a birthday gift after my lesson! We did a private lesson for our 6 year old and a group lesson with three adults and two kids. The instructors were very patient and watched each of us giving us instruction for each of our individual skill level. We had one person in our group ready to catch waves on his own and one kid taking each wave almost down to the shore. Everyone of us got specialized tips and tricks. My 6 year old loved her lesson and stayed out catching waves for the full 90 minutes. They did just enough land time to make sure we knew what we were doing but wanted to maximize our time in the water. It was an amazing experience will definitely do this school again. read more

My 10 year old daughter had a 60 min surf lesson with Aloha Surfing School and loved it! She lucked out and got two instructors - Ka'ula and Hayden - who were both great. Ka'ula pushed her into the waves and Hayden helped her get back to him. They were very patient and and gave her some good tips. She had so much fun that she said she wanted to do it again the next day, but she ended up being too tired. Otherwise we totally would have signed her up again. Highly recommend! read more
