My family and I initially wanted to rent from a different shop, but they close early in the afternoon. So, we ended up at Backdoor Surf instead. I recommend going to Hanalei Surfboard Rentals instead; it's cheaper, and they offer both half-day and full-day options. One of the store associates, David, was quite rude while loading the boards onto our car. My mother asked me to watch him so I could learn how to put the boards back on the car rack when we returned. I told her I already knew how to do it, and David interjected, "Then why don't you do it?" He had a poor attitude while loading the boards, despite us paying over $80 for two surfboards and one paddleboard. This place has a lot of cool items. My only complaint is how my husband and I were treated. The staff were not inviting or welcoming at all. When my husband and I went to pay we didn't even get a hello. After paying we said thank you and the staff member responds, "yup" as she plops the rain jacket on the counter. The whole experience was unpleasant even to ask questions about a certain item. A little customer service goes a long way. Rented an SUP and Paddle for 3 days. The board was ok, however the paddle broke after making only a few strokes out on the water. Took it back to the store and wanted to to charge me $155 for a new paddle, complained vociferously and eventuall they called the owner, who after looking at a picture of the paddle agreed to charge me only $55. Still not very happy with this since I had only used it for a few minutes. Moral of the story if you are renting gear from these people make sure that you check it out thorougly, if its a SUP and Paddle, for the SUP make sure they note every ding mark and scratch that the board has on the form theyuse and also make sure that you flex the paddle and make sure there are no cracks anywhere along the handle especially where the paddle joins the stem. I know its hard to make money in these places but a paddle that last five minutes, come on! read more
