Sure enough, Marta came right on over while we entertained ourselves with the adorable shop cat. I picked up a few tops for when my little is bigger as well as some adorable little summer dresses! I also got two beach cover up dresses and a facemask (you can never have too many these days) for myself. Items are definitely on the pricey side, but all the fabrics were hand painted by her husband Ambrose and sewn by Marta herself so I was not surprised given the work involved. The shopping bag and tissue paper had an adorable little illustration that I learned was created by her daughter when she was growing up. They've been in business since the early 80s so I loved that we could support an amazing local, family-owned business for our Kauai souvenirs! Extra bonus points because while the credit card reader was taking it's sweet time Ambrose stopped by the shop to give us fresh fruit from their garden (freshest mango I've ever had) and a hand painted fish watercolor!

The clothing prices are fairly expensive, but the quality of the fabric for both the Tori Richards and Pineapples pieces is very good. Great pricing on sterling silver jewelry, although I cannot speak to the value on the local pearls. The clothing had a nice range of sizes, although was somewhat lacking in women's size medium for some styles. I visited the shop three times over the course of a week-long stay nearby (my indecisive husband was picking out a shirt), and I did not experience the poor service highlighted in other reviews. Each time, the clerk welcomed us and was ready to answer any questions. I also got a good, informative overview on the local pearls and why their selection has some imperfections from one of the clerks while my husband was trying on shirts, without feeling pressured to buy jewelry.

She didn't even bother greeting me or my daughter and she was just in front of us as we walked in. But I noticed that she was welcoming other customers who came in the store! (Things that make you wonder!) I asked her a question about the clothes designer and she didn't even bother to look me in the eye when she responded. Instead she made it a point to talk to another customer ! At that point I was done. I work in the travel industry and good customer service is number one for me! I provide it and I expect it , especially if you work in a major tourist destination where you can ruin someone's day by just being plain rude and unwelcoming. Anyway I left and went to Ayatar, the clothes boutique across from this store. The sales person at Ayatar was friendly and accommodating so I bought $500 worth of stuff from her because I always reward good customer service.

This review genuinely makes me sad to write. We've visited Tiny Manini every year. It became part…read moreof our family tradition whenever we came to the North Shore. A children's bookstore should feel magical. It should feel like curiosity, discovery, imagination and the joy of finding something unexpected. For years, that's exactly what this place felt like. The people working here used to introduce us to local authors. They'd recommend books we never would have picked up on our own. They'd engage with our family. They'd make the experience feel special. This visit felt like the complete opposite. We arrived shortly before closing with our children. That's on us. We weren't expecting anyone to stay late. We weren't expecting special treatment. We simply wanted to browse for a few minutes and hopefully buy a few books. Instead, we were repeatedly reminded how much time was left. "Can I help you?" "You have about five minutes." "Anything I can help you find?" Over and over again. Not in a warm way. Not in a helpful way. Not in a "let me help you find something before we close" way. In a "please hurry up and leave" way. The saddest part wasn't even what was said. It was what wasn't. Nobody greeted my children. Nobody asked what they liked to read. Nobody pointed them toward a favorite book. Nobody shared a local recommendation. Nobody created even a single moment of wonder inside a children's bookstore. And just like that, the magic disappeared. The irony is that bookstores aren't really selling books anymore. You can buy books anywhere. They're selling atmosphere. They're selling community. They're selling the feeling that wandering through shelves is still worth doing in an age when everything can be ordered online. That's why this visit was so disappointing. The books were still there. The shelves were still there. The store was still there. But the warmth that made the place special seemed completely gone. After years of visiting and happily spending money here, I walked out feeling like my family had overstayed our welcome. For a children's bookstore, that's a surprisingly sad thing to feel. We won't be back. Update after the owner's response: The response mostly proves the problem. My review was never about the exact minute we walked in, whether closing procedures exist or whether the shop prefers to be called a children's retail store instead of a bookstore. Those are technicalities. The issue was hospitality. We came in with our kids ready to buy before leaving the North Shore. Instead, the visit felt managed, rushed and oddly defensive. Explaining the drawer, the folding, the vacuuming and the five minute window may explain the staff's priorities, but it does not change the customer experience. Future customers can decide for themselves. My point is simple: a children's shop should know how to make families feel welcome. This visit did not.
