I realized yesterday that I've been eating at this place almost since it opened in the 80s! And it still looks mostly the same though the menu is definitely updated. I had a turkey burger and it was great. I loved the pickled onions and the chipotle sauce plus the bun tasted really fresh. The Cole slaw side was really good too, glad I tried it. My mom had a French dip and really enjoyed it, and my husband the steak and eggs. The steak was a perfect medium rare and he especially liked the hash browns. If you wanna grab some grub and a good price and good portions look no further. It's nice about this place is that it has a fairly large dining area. Even when it's crowded I've never had to wait long to get a table. The menu consist of some basic diner food as well as some more pricey options. My main go to is either the chicken Parm meal which I think is only $10. The breakfast burritos is good, so is the chicken fried steak. Also ask them about their daily deal being that it changes. I've been here quite a handful of times and I've never had a rude server. Yes, sometimes you do have to wait a little. Through patients in perseverance you will endure. The bakery case on the outside of the restaurant. Is a little more miss than hit. I've tried both the brownie as well as the cupcakes. I believe that they're a little dry. My family and I came up for a family reunion and stayed at this casino/hotel. Every morning we ate here and I'd say it was pretty decent food. It was pretty packed everyday, there would be a line out the door of people waiting to be seated! The food was average, not too bad. The first day I got a Bloody Mary and French dip with potato salad. I believe for dinner that night I got grande burrito with rice and beans, it was nothing too special but I ate the whole thing. The next day my family wanted to eat here yet again lol, so I got the joeys breakfast bowl with a side of sourdough toast, it was pretty good. I believe one of the other nights my cousin and I came down a grabbed some of the brownies that were outside the restaurant where you pay! They were really good, but super rich!! Wow, can't believe it's been over 7 years since my last review here. I was passing through on a Friday night and wanted to check out the C V Steak place inside the Carson Valley Inn, cause I hear they have a killer dinner deal for $29 including three courses. But we get there and the place is closed and undergoing renovations. The sign says opening April 25th, so oh well, I guess we'll go to the coffee shop restauant Katies. They have a prime rib special $18.99 for a 10 oz. cut served with salad and baked potato with veggies. The service was fine, not as nice as sitting in the steakhouse, but the food gets the job done. My food came out as ordered, med rare perfect. I liked my piece had a bigger portion of edge cap meat going around the eye. That's the most tasty part! The baked potato was cook perfect and I slathered a ton of butter in it! I'd say is was a good deal for $18.99. I just have to come back when the C V Steak reopens. read more

We went to the Carson Valley Inn last night because we wanted to go to the CV Steak House. It was closed so we decided to eat at Katie's since we were there. I didn't have high expectations but was pleasantly surprised. My husband ordered the meatloaf dinner that came with soup or salad, mashed potatoes with gravy and sautéed vegetables. He ordered the chicken tortilla soup instead of the salad. He said everything was delicious. Nothing fancy, just good comfort food. I ordered the tater skins. They were a little burnt and overcooked but I decided to eat them instead of sending them back. To my surprise, they were quite tasty! Our waitress, Jeana, was friendly and very efficient. Hugo completely violated my privacy and hounded me on the fact, if my dog was actually a surface Dogor not, I let him know that she has cancer at the moment so we don't wanna overwhelm her, put the vest on her and hurt her and as she is soothing me for my disability, and doing her job! he has the audacity to come and tell me that she is untrained and that she needs to lay down and not touch the seat and I let him know about my disability, which is also a completely violation of my HIPAA and my privacy and made me feel completely uncomfortable, but I will say the waiter that actually served us was amazing. Kept up with us gave us water. Every two minutes didn't even let us empty. The cup was absolutely amazing and the food is great. I will also say the waiter complimented my well-behaved dog and her training and had no issue with it, but Hugo couldn't shut up about it so apparently, if you have a disability or you don't look rich or up to their standards, you will not get the complete respect that you deserve. read more

We been coming here for years as we go to Tahoe often and stop on the way up the hill or back down. Always been great food until now. It had been awhile since we ate here and the food was terrible. We met with friends for breakfast since it was too windy for the Balloon Races. They never been here and so we told them what a great place it was to eat. It was an embarrassment an we won't be back. Too many other good places to eat. Here are the complaints: 1. Our guests ordered a scramble and it came on a huge plate in a tiny cup. The plate was empty. Toast was separate and came much later. And early in the morning they were out of sourdough bread. 2. One of our guests ordered the bacon and eggs, it was slimy and the hash browns were burned. 3. My omelet was over-cooked and rubbery and very dry inside. No taste at all even with the filling (chili peppers and spinach). The forgot the cheese. How do you get an omelet with no cheese unless you order it that way? 4. The rye bread was so dry and stale that smothered in butter it was still hard to swallow. 5. Our server was not friendly and did not want to be bothered with anything other than running from table to table. We would have sent every plate back to the kitchen except we did not want to embarrass our friends. They were not happy with their meals either and it reflected on us since we told them how great the restaurant was for meals. Well, I have found one redeeming dish here at Katie's, and that'd be the Monte Christo Sandwich! Very few place even offer this sandwich much less do it right! Another deal I found here is the 1/2 carafe of house wine, it's just $4.00! 4 bucks for what amounts to 3 and a little bit more glasses of wine. House wine is $3.00 a glass , so getting the 1/2 carafe is a deal! You can even order a whole bottle of just $8.00! Such a deal! My Monte Christo sandwich was perfect, basically a deep fried french toast sandwich layered with turkey, ham and cheese with an extra french toast in the middle, what's not to like? The meals (classic hamburger and green chile cheeseburger) were both pretty disgusting. Very old buns, soggy lettuce. The cheeseburger was ordered 'well', but, at best, was 'medium'. The waiter checked on us once, when he dropped off our check, so 'you won't have to go looking for me'. The cashier asked if everything was good, we said no. I've always had decent service and friendly, personable folks ensuring I have a good meal and want for naught. My go-to comfort food is the chicken fried steak and eggs! I can never eat it all but enjoy it every single time I order it! Although connected to (inside) the local Carson Valley Inn Casino, the ambiance inside does not include the smoke smell nor cacophony of slot machine noises from the casino floor. To me that's the only draw back is having to walk through all the cigarette smoke to get there. I've seen what looks to be a side door along 395. I ordered their 12 oz prime rib medium rare, it comes with soup or salad, choice of potatoes or rice and veggies. The salad was nothing special but I asked for ceasar dressing and the was an additional upcharge for ceasar dressing, really!, the vegetables were diced squash that was an afterthought because they were way way overcooked. I did not know of many restaurants that don't know how to properly cook prime rib but this was one of them. They literally ruined a perfectly good piece of meat by brining the prime rib. Prime rib should not be ruined by brining it, The meat was overly salty due to the brining method. I think if I'm ever in the vicinity again, I will either try another restaurant or try their chicken fried steak instead. read more

This place is a regular stop when traveling the 395. I always get the chicken parmesan. Is it the best? No...BUT it is pretty damn good for the price. We've always had great service and most of the items on the menu are solid country cooking. You are garunteed to leave full. In a small town there aren't many late night food options, but Katie's has always been a staple for the community. From post football game eats in high school to family dining, Katies has a place in everyone's story. Depending on the day, their food can be typical diner food or it can be a delicious 5 star meal, but last night was the best food andservice I've ever received there. JV was so thorough, kind, friendly, made sure our order was EXACTLY as we placed it and went above and beyond to ensure we had a nice meal. I hope we see her again there soon. We ordered the New York steak and a ham and cheese scramble. The steak was buttery, tender, and flavorful. I was impressed with how well it was cooked and the amount of flavor. The scramble was great too! The ambiance is your typical casino restaurant with the slight sound of slots in the background, but it is not smoky at all inside of the restaurant itself despite the casino being increasingly smokier each time I've been through lately. read more

What should've been a fun night turned sour fast. While eating our wings we noticed they were severely undercooked! Raw enough to be a health hazard. It killed the vibe and left us both upset. This wasn't just a bad meal; it was unacceptable. I called Katie's right away. They said they were too busy and a manager would call me back. Never happened. The next day, I called again, and they had no record of my issue--like my complaint vanished. They told me to wait for the general manager. Big surprise, no call. I called a third time, and they offered me a $25 coupon. For food that could've made us sick? Not only that, but the no call backs left a bad taste in my mouth. I asked for a refund; they refused because I didn't have my receipt. I didn't expect I would need it. I didn't know the wings wouldn't be safe to eat, otherwise I would have saved my receipt. My mistake. This is beyond frustrating. Katie's showed zero care for their customers or food safety. Their management dropped the ball, and their "solution" was a slap in the face. I lived in the valley my whole life and I used to enjoy this place, but I'm done. They treated me like an issue, when I was the one given undercooked wings. I won't eat here again, Keep your receipt if you go, and don't hold your breath for a callback. Pro Tip: Save your receipt, because Katie's won't back you up without one. Had the worst lunch at this restaurant today. First it took over 35 minutes from the time we ordered until we received our food. During that time, not once did our waiter stop by to refill our ice teas. I ordered a sandwich and asked to add tomato. No tomatoes on my sandwich but did bring some slices. Did not have ranch with my fries as I had requested. Another order was apple walnut salad. The salad was warm, totally wilted and very unappetizing. It looked like it had been sitting out. Again I had to request more ice tea. After finishing lunch, it took another 15 minutes to get our bill. Don't think I would return here for another meal with such poor service and unappetizing meals. read more

The eggs were runny and under cook. The bacon was over cook and hard, it broke to the touch. I have sour dough bread toast, and it was hard to bite. Even when I put butter on the toast to make it softer it was still too hard to eat. The hash browns were the best thing on the plate, but they had a ware taste, like a ware oil. I try everything and leave all on the plate. The server never asks how the breakfast was or he seen my plate was full of my breakfast, when he comes back with the bill. He only thing he did, took my order, come back with the food and then give me the bill. So, the best thing was the water I ask for at the beginning. This place has very reasonable food prices for what you get. It's extremely convenient and the daily specials are good. I had the pork chops, and they were thin and dry. Mashed potatoes and gravy were great, however. We got the ham steak breakfast several times and it's fantastic. Largest and juciest ham steak I have ever had. Tried the shrimp louie and it was loaded with shrimp. Unfortunately, theThousand Island dressing is terrible. Fish and chips was my co-diner's truly inspired choice: three sparingly breaded, perfectly fried cod fillets alongside French fries cooked crispy to order, and an added side of decent coleslaw. The side salad included with my entree was satisfactory. However, the menu described pot roast as "Served with...its own natural juices," and at $13.99 it was a fully priced, unnatural disaster. This preformed, rectangular piece of easy-to-slice processed beef possessed no traceable natural juices, was practically flavorless, and was covered by gelatinous gravy that looked like a brown plastic sheet. Moreover, it was served lukewarm. The side of fries was perfect. Plain, unseasoned veggies were just OK. A major quirk of mine is, when served something displeasing, I put on my thinking cap and imagine ways to improve the leftovers. For next day's lunch the thick slab got sliced in half lengthwise, which became two seasoned, broiled cheeseburgers on sourdough that weren't half bad--and, no, they weren't ALL bad. But, yeah, I shoulda sent it back and got me some fish and chips too. Don't misunderstand this review. Lots of people like this place, and they order stuff that isn't fouled up by some chef's or executive's culinary confusion or demented decision-making, respectively.
