I am so BLESSED to have had Dr. Iwata as my OB. She's the one of the kind... I've had a very complicated pregnancy and she was right there by our side throughout everything. She saved my baby's life at 18 weeks performing an emergency Cerclage. Until the day of my birth at 33 weeks she was right there. My C-section surgery/ bilateral tubal ligation went smoothly. This was the worst doctor I've ever encountered. During my pregnancy, I was bleeding, but she never bothered to check if it was okay or not. It turned out to be an ectopic pregnancy , and she failed to diagnose it in time, forcing me to undergo surgery and resulting in the loss of my fallopian tube. She dismissed my concerns, claiming bleeding during pregnancy was normal, even though I felt something was wrong. After the surgery, I had to find a new OB-GYN because I felt like she didn't care about her patients or follow proper procedures. If she had checked earlier, I might have saved my fallopian tube. Despite everything, she still calls me post-surgery to see how I'm doing... I was so upset and disappointed. read more

I have mixed feelings about this doctor. I initially felt as though she was caring, patient, kind and that everything would be great. She came and sat (side by side) next to me the first time we met, went over my chart from another dr and took her time. Oh how things have changed! Since the first time I saw her she rushes through the appointment, has one foot out the door and minimizes any concerns you have. When reviewing my birth plan more than a few points within were shot down because of the "hospital" rules which I learned later were her own preferences and she was not being truthful. "No your husband can't cut the cord, no you can't watch the birth..." Dr. Iwata can be pushy, dismissive and has a poor bedside manner. She seemed like an improvement from the previous doctor but I could have used an even better step up. Her office staff (older lady who sets appointments) is incredibly rude, tries to make assumptions about what your appointments are for and when you need them (and she's always wrong). Pros are that she did the paperwork needed to be on leave, was timely with completion and has a convenient office location that usually has available parking you don't pay for. She will also listen and answer your questions if you can manage to remember them and get them out before she runs out the door. My advice to you is to do your research. See if what the other reviews mention is acceptable and if her personality won't stress you out. If I could do it over I would have gone with someone else but for the area there aren't many options that have decent reviews. She isn't worth the headache and unsettling feeling you may have once it comes time for the birth. You deserve better from someone who really wants to be there and walk with you through your pregnancy and the birth. read more

I was a patient of Dr. Iwata's for 2 years which included one well woman exam and the initial 15 weeks of my pregnancy. During my first well woman appointment I found her demeanor brisk and formal, which was fine, however as I progressed in pregnancy and expressed my intention for an unmedicated birth I realized our differences quickly. I found her practice to be outdated, her knowledge to be lacking in certain areas of new research, and her scope to be biased. She was unwilling to converse on topics of unmedicated birth and shared insight such as "since this is your first birth, you'll probably have an epidural and won't need a doula". She responded to questions flatly, made limited eye contact, and gave limited depth to attempts to gain more knowledge on my behalf. (I am not interested in finding a best friend in a doctor or one who will engage in small talk over other topics, I want to discuss the health of my baby, my best options, and keep the conversation positive and proactive.) Based on this as well as other smaller issues I had (i.e her calling my baby a "pregnancy", giving me numerous ultrasounds), I ultimately left her practice at 15 weeks. I subsequently chose an amazing OB/Gyno who was extremely knowledgeable and willing to engage in discussion and established rapport easily. (I did deliver my healthy baby girl unmedicated after 9 hours of labor with a doula at my side.) I believe Dr. Iwata wants patients who are uninformed, defer to her entirely, and will be guided into having medicated births which may ultimately lead to unnecessary c-sections. I am happy that there are positive reviews of her work and practice, I understand she may be talented in other areas I did not experience. Although I didn't have a medically complicated pregnancy, I wouldn't recommend Dr. Iwata to a friend, colleague, or stranger on the internet. I would recommend becoming informed, researching the birth you wish to have, and learning as much as you can. read more

I'm 48 years old with a Mirena IUD and a diagnosis of hyperplasia with mild atypia. This means I get an endometrial biopsy every year or so to ensure my uterine lining hasn't become cancerous. Anyone who's had this godawful procedure knows what a nightmare it is, and at this point I know the right drug cocktail to enable me to tolerate it. Due to an interstate move and change in insurance, I found myself needing a new OBGYN to keep an eye on my uterus, and my HMO primary care doctor referred me to Dr. Iwata since she's in the same medical group. While I can't say enough about the positive vibe in the front office and friendly, good-humored office staff, I walked out of my appointment with Dr. Iwata. An OBGYN who scowls, gruffly asks my medical history, suggests my hyperplasia is caused by hormones in my supplements (without knowing the brand or ingredients, and which I started taking long after the hyperplasia), scoffs when I say I don't want a hysterectomy and practically rolls her eyes at me is a doctor I want NOWHERE near my parts. And a doctor who expresses doubt she can do an endometrial biopsy around an IUD (after two already have, sight unseen), suggesting (with a sigh) she needs to look at my cervix first gets to go NOWHERE near my parts. No, it's not OK for you to look up my vagina Dr. Iwata and whatever your reason for treating me with casual disdain NO ONE deserves to be disrespected like that when they go to you for care. read more

I went in for the first time to get a papsmear and she seemed kind of stoic but professional. Then she called me back to tell me it was abnormal and I told her my fears and reservations and my past history and she told me, "well you're going to just need to be calm" but not in a reassuring, comforting way, but "tough luck, suck it up" kind of way. I immediately told her I wanted a referral. Bad bedside manner. As if women don't go through enough, here's a female doctor with no empathy. I came to Dr. Iwata because I needed a bartholin cyst drained. I told her it was something that I was embarrassed about and when I told her what I had, she laughed. Throughout the appointment, she made me feel worse and worse. She seemed grossed out during the procedure and was totally unprofessional. Afterwards, when I was asking about the healing process, she abruptly cut me off and left the room. Apparently, she was done. I've never been with a doctor with such terrible bedside manner. I read a lot of Reviews about Dr. Iwata, good & bad. But I still decided to give her the benefit of the doubt. My first experience was nice. The staff was friendly and the clinic was clean & cute. She saw me physically and then she spoke with me in her office about my family history and everything Doctors need/want to know. She said to me that given the fact that I had a c-section with my first (3 years ago) I would need one again. She didn't give me much explanation as to why. Simply that my uterus could rupture, I could bleed to death and my baby would die. I went home crying feeling like I'm never going to get a chance to give birth naturally. Something I was looking forward to trying. My visits with her kept getting colder and colder. Not too informative and a little impatient. I took my son and husband with to 2 of my appointments and she never acknowledge them. In one of my appointments, I told her I felt the baby move (4 months into my pregnancy) and she dismissed me by saying "no, I'm sure that was just gas). After speaking with my mother & friends who had a successful vbac, I started to wonder "well, why can't i do it?" So I approached her about it again and she wasn't too happy. She said "bottom line is that a vbac is a huge risk." (Again she said) my uterus could rupture and my baby would die." She didn't give me any statistics or any chances were of me having a rupture. I simply expressed that I'd be willing to try a vbac if everything looked well but I'd have an open mind to having a c-section if was the best choice at the moment. But she said "if you want to go natural, good luck finding a doctor who is willing to sit by you and wait all day at the hospital because I'm not." Yes, She said that!!! Reading into her reviews, I realized almost everyone had a cesarean with her. And if that is how she likes to practice her field, then I'm not ok with that. Everyone has their right to choose their birth plan. But her cold attitude and lack of information drove me to switch obgyn. And the one I switched to has been amazing and is willing to work with my birth plan. read more

I was referred to Dr. Iwata by my primary physician when we got pregnant. She was very straightforward and kind throughout my pregnancy. I also really liked the nursing and front desk staff -- they were always very helpful and empathetic. My main issue came when I went into labor. The day before my water broke, five weeks early mind you, I felt like something had changed with the baby and got a little scared. We went in and they monitored her heartbeat and mine, but did not examine me. I did not see Dr. Iwata at that last minute appointment, but I should be able to expect the same care from the other doctors in her office that she would provide. The next day, my water broke unexpectedly. I'm sure everything would have happened as it did regardless if they had examined me, but you just never know - perhaps they would have had advance warning/put me on bed-rest/etc. While I feel forever grateful that Dr. Iwata and the hospital staff safely delivered my premature baby via c-section, my experience afterward was very disappointing. Doctor Iwata saw me immediately after having the baby and then not at all. The OB is supposed to visit you each day and check on you -- especially if you have had surgery. I was well taken care of by the maternity ward nursing staff at least. I finally had to call Dr. Iwata's office to find out if I was being released on my fourth day, and she and her staff were totally unaware that she was supposed to come that day. It turned out that another doctor was supposed to cover for her and see me each day -- and they never did. I think it was her responsibility to make sure that she was properly covered, that I was informed I would be seeing a different doctor, and perhaps even check in with that doctor on my condition. While again, I am grateful that the baby arrived safely (she spent 10 days in NICU but is now very healthy) -- I feel like the care I received after giving birth was unacceptable. For that reason (and the lack of examination the day before my water broke), I would not be able to recommend Dr. Iwata or the other doctors in her office. Which is too bad -- as the majority of my care was great and the nursing staff was excellent. read more

Like other reviewer's comments, Dr. Iwata isn't very caring, takes minimal effort to connect with patients - bit of cold personality even, "just get the job done" kind of approach all the way. My experience with Dr. Iwata - when I was pregnant - was just okay. Not so great, I kind of wish I had somebody else. My overall impression of her is cold, not so friendly. She is straightforward and to the point which is good. The fact that she helped me delivering a healthy child is very good and I'm thankful for that. But... I guess she knows what she is doing with many years of experience, but I wish she was more approachable. I also recall she only gave me minimal information about my pregnancy and pregnancy in general -- I wish she told me more "educational" things so to speak, like what I should be eating more or what I should be careful etc. etc. etc. especially when I was late childbearing. But the only informational thing I received from her office was some lousy multi - generation xeroxed prenatal handbook thingy, which was almost impossible to read. I wonder if she still hand that thing to her patients...? I hope not. Verdict: I'm sorry to say but I would go somebody else if I ever got pregnant again. read more

While I may have to update this after I deliver my baby I just had to write a review (and I am a rare reviewer). Dr. Iwata's office helped me in a crazy situation. I am 36 weeks pregnant and had to switch doctors, hospitals and the whole shabang due to a change in my insurance. Not only was the office staff so kind about getting me in they actually went above and beyond to give me advice on how to get things transferred quickly. The women at the front desk were some of the nicest people I have ever dealt with in an office setting and I have been in healthcare for 7 years. Dr. Iwata was great and concise. I didn't feel like she was rushing me, I felt that she was experienced and confident and was open to helping us with any questions we had. Dr Iwata is the gentlest OBGYN I have ever had. Her exams are careful and you barely feel them. She is patient and listens to all concerns. I have been a patient with her for almost a decade and have been treated well by her and staff at every visit. They have taken care of both of my pregnancies. Both with many complications. The care they have given has been considerate and understanding. They have always gone the extra mile for me. From taking time to listen when I was in tears from pregnancy issues, to letting me take the 3 hour diabetes test in their office after passing out at the lab. They have kindly helped me with issues pertaining to Endometriosis for years and were extremely helpful and proactive with fertility issues when I was trying to get pregnant. I have 0 complaints about this office and Dr Iwata in particular. She is a kind, open hearted, gentle and wonderful Doctor. read more

A poster posted that she prefers C sections and that is not true. If she felt a C section was necessary I would trust her opinion or another doctors; not your own opinion. I do see how shes gets down to business quickly and if your looking for alot of hand holding maybe go elsewhere. Dr Iwata is not my regular doctor (thank God). She was seeing me in place of dr Hartford who was on vacation. It was my first time meeting this lady and she was very short and to the point. She came in to the room to do an ultrasound on my babies and her first comment was "ok let's check to see if there is still a heart beat" .... wait. What? You don't alarm patients like that. Her bedside manner was very ugly and harsh. She worried me for no reason whatsoever with her stupid comment. Since then, I can't stand the woman. I don't know who gave her good reviews, but they probably have the same dry personality as her. Steer clear of dr iwata if you want genuine patient care for you and your baby. read more

i was referred to dr. Iwata by my primary physician. i was hoping for a good doctor. I went in with my standards up pretty high because i loved my past ob/gyn, she was really caring, but due to insurance changes i had to make that change. So my initial impression of Dr iwata was very cold, and that she didnt have a good relationship with her patients. Well i figured i'd giver her the benefit of the doubt, but after a year of having her as my ob/gyn she did not prove me wrong. Every time i asked a question she rolled her eyes, and answered sarcastically, this is not what i look for in my doctors. Im obviously there because she's the doctor and i the patient, if i knew the answers to my questions i wouldn't be asking!!! She at times just seems like she has no sympathy for her patients, and its just a job for her, she has no compassion, or any relationship with her patients. I am now with another doctor and i'm happy, sorry to say but i would never refer anyone to dr. iwata, The only good thing i can say is, the front desk staff was always very helpful, very attentive, and professional! read more

Needing an ob-gyn while pregnant is daunting. Having no references to go on except for a few yelp reviews made me super nervous. Although I knew traffic would be never a problem to get to the office, there was something unsettling about going out of my comfort zone. But I called. With my guard up, I cautiously thought to myself: Can the sweet sounding voices on the phone, truly be this nice in person? Amazingly, yes. Skeptical, I waited at my appointment thinking there's no way that my Dr. can possibly be nice and efficient, too. Oh, my... So I was so very wrong again. Dr. Iwata is able to balance being informative, getting you in and out; all while maintaining a calm, kind bedside manner. (Which is wonderful to have if you're going to have her deliver your future children!) Everyone in this office just sweetens the deal! I recently moved to the area and made an appointment with Dr. Iwata after seeing decent reviews for her elsewhere. Her office is close enough for me to walk to and is on the bus line (beware the hill you will need to walk up to get to her office building though). The front desk staff were friendly and got me through the new-patient paperwork quickly. The office is clean, there are plenty of magazines to read, and the view of mountains from the waiting room was nice. As a I was waiting, two new mommies came in with their kids just to say hi which I take as a good sign. My wait wasn't long and I was soon taken back to a room. The nurse took some additional info and soon Dr. Iwata came in and introduced herself. She suggested we go to her office to discuss medical history and I thought this was a nice touch. I don't think I've ever had a doctor take me to their office to have a discussion in a less clinical setting. The exam was an exam but was over quickly enough and Dr. Iwata kept up the conversation to keep time moving. I feel good about her being my doctor. The only reasons I didn't go with 5-stars were: 1) it seems weird to rate such a doctor this way and 2) once she knew which bc I was on, it seemed kind of case-closed as far as which one she would prescribe. I mentioned a concern that a generic wasn't available and she said it would be out soon. I could have persisted I guess but it didn't seem like a huge deal particularly because I use mail-order. read more

How do you write a yelp review for someone whose experience, caution and compassion saved your child's life? Being new to the area and surprised by a pregnancy, we chose Dr. Iwata based on online reviews and that she was in my insurance network. Quite the gamble! Her staff from the beginning was always warm and helpful and on my first visit she sat down with me to hear about my previous son's birth and help her set a game plan. She is confident and can be direct, but has a huge laugh, and I immediately felt at ease with her. The nurses and office staff all are long-tenured and clearly enjoy working with each other and for the doctors. But it was Dr. Iwata's caution, keen advice and experience that made a potentially very tragic situation have a happy ending. My husband and I trusted her completely. She was also not afraid to show emotion afterwards either. She's an incredible doctor and a kind person, and we are so grateful that we chose her to care for us. Some critical reviews suggest that she ignored patients' requests but dr iwata proceeds with great caution and thoughtfully weighs choices to ensure she's making the safest decision. I don't doubt that she would step in if she felt a patient wasn't making the safest choices for mom and baby but to me, that's why I choose an experienced OB! I was referred to Dr. Iwata through my primary care physician after I had an abnormal papsmear with high-risk HPV. I went in to my appointment with a list of questions I had written down. She refused to even let me ask a question until she had finished examining and taking tissue samples from me. After the procedure when she finally allowed me to ask a question, her reactions and answers were cold, curt and she barely gave me any information. She told me over the phone that the results of my biopsy showed precancerous cells and that there is nothing I can do about it, all I can do it wait 6 months and get another papsmear. Perhaps she is right, but she left me feeling so uninformed about my condition and the risks it involves that I am having all my medical records forwarded to another doctor and going to get a second opinion. Overall this woman's bedside manner is terrible and her demeanor leaves you feeling ashamed and dumb for asking a question. read more

Wow.. we're do I begin.. This "person" is not deserving of the title Doctor, She is the most rude, disrespectful, cold hearted woman I have ever had the displeasure to come across. I regularly see Dr. Hartford, he is a great doctor, I have absolutely no complaints what so ever regarding him. So I went to the hospital (Glendale Adventist ER) due to severe hives, a few hours later I decided to call my OB Dr.Hartford, but I forgot that on Friday's they close early, but the on call doc was Iwata, so they told me I would be receiving a call from her shortly so I can explain what my concerns were. Well I get a call, I say "hello" and her response was "Mmm Hmm" not "Hello this is Dr. Iwata" so after that, I explained to her how I was feeling, I was telling her that i was feeling short of breath and weak and was concerned about my baby and if she could advice me as to what to do and if certain symptoms were normal, and her response was "well you don't sound short of breath to me" and was just being completely rude and cold and uninterested in what I had to say, and that is were all Hell broke lose, my husband had to almost take the phone away from me because I couldn't contain myself from telling her off. Now, I am not some ghetto person who is disrespectful and rude to others, who uses foul language just to get her way, I am the complete opposite, I usually bite my tongue, smile and avoid confrontation, but I was so disgusted about the way this person treated me, I was so worried about my baby, I was looking for reassurance, pease of mind, and some one who could guide me in the right direction as to what to do, but instead I ended up getting that reassurance from Dr. Google if you know what I mean. She should not be allowed to practice, a doctor should be compassionate, caring, understanding and patient. Regardless of how "stupid" my concerns or questions might have been, she should have not treated me like that. It's a shame she is allowed to practice medicine. I had to see her because my dr. Was out of town. I was heavily bleeding due to an ovarian cyst rapture. the care she provided was trash... she didn't know how to connect with a patient... I have a medical background so the things she was explaining were misleading.. after she gave me an attitude she agreed to do an ultrasound (poor quality)... if she were the last dr. In the world I would prefer to die from pain and bleeding... the reason I went to her was my bleeding (as an anemic patient I was worried) but she did not even go over it ... all she did came to the room for 3 min. .. explained my cycle (wich I was very aware of).. with a MEAN tone told me to wait for an ultrasound (waited 2 hours) .. without any final report to me as a patient ... read more

I moved to LA last year and was referred by my GP to Dr. Iwata since I am trying to have a baby. From the start, Dr. Iwata has been unfriendly, rude, uncaring, and acts like my questions are unwelcome and idiotic. After having a HSG, I had recurring pain that she barely acknowledged and consistent spotting in between periods. She examined me and set up an ultrasound with the technician. My cervix looked fine to her, but the ultrasound technician told me I had a ruptured cyst that I should speak to Dr. Iwata about. Dr. Iwata did not follow up by phone until I called her and when we did speak she was curt and sounded annoyed that she had to speak with me. She also told me I should see an infertility specialist, even though the sign on the door outside her office has the word "infertility" next to her name. In my experience, Dr. Iwata did not care about me as a patient and provided the minimal amount of work required for her job. read more

I don't understand the haters in some of these reviews. This review is long overdue actually. I've been going to Dr. Iwata for several years now and have never had a bad experience whatsoever. She has always listened to my concerns, answered my questions and spent whatever time with me was necessary. I've always been seen promptly except for one recent visit, and when she did arrive, the doctor explained the reason for being (not even terribly) late and apologized, which gave me a sense that she was very respectful of my time. She and her staff have always been friendly and responsive and, most importantly, treated me with respect. Most recently, I asked her to see my daughter regarding a specific issue. She could have not have been more considerate during our visit and was the first health practitioner out of several we've consulted for this problem to offer concrete and constructive suggestions which have provided some relief. Dr Iwata should be removed from practice altogether. She receives mixed reviews and showed my pregnant wife and I utter disregard for our first pregnancy. She should serve time in the worst prison available for her complete and utter misrepresentation and direct mal-practice! My wife and I went through months of worry and needless frustration every moment of six months. She tortured us with accusing my wife of being obese when she carried average weight since first trimester. We were told to fast and eliminate portions to avoid gaining weight at all. My beautiful wife of 163 pounds struggled to not intake the needed nutrition our baby ever so desired. We researched every possible diet that was "mother with child" safe and racked our minds as to how starving a young baby could ever be the way to go. Nonsense! Mother's have cravings for a reason! Every woman is different during every pregnancy. Iwata was prepping us for a c section delivery! Not because it was needed, but because it produces a higher commission for her, with less effort! Second trimester came around fast and we were furiously trying not to gain weight and still feed our unborn the vitals. Hesitating the visits to her office as they began to be closer together. Continuing prepping us for c section, Iwata touches on weight and that excercise is needed! Work until your water breaks she told us. She dictates in her notes scheduling a c section. Poor wifey and I deepen our research, finding out all the negatives about c section deliveries. How our 2 nd and third planned offspring will NEED to be delivered the same way.
