Kassab's was the first place I tried falaffel - back in 1996. This restaurant is a South Side institution and it honestly is the best Lebanese food in Pittsburgh!!! I get the Baba Ganaouj, the dolmas, and we do a beef schwarma sandwich. The food is so good, just eat here! Everyone who works here is so kind -- tip them!! But mostly, eat at Kassab's. This place has been around forever, and I don't think it gets the credit it is due!! read more

I stopped by here a couple of Monday's ago with my wife for lunch. We happened to be out for the morning and so I fired up Yelp looking for a place to eat and we decided on Kassab's. This restaurant is located right on E Carson St in the South side. Whenever we entered the restaurant at shortly before noon, we were the only patrons there. As you would expect then we were promptly greeted and given our choice of tables. The inside of this restaurant had a number of tables, murals on the exposed brick wall, a bar and then a display case for some of their baked goods. For lunch on this day I decided to go with the moussaka while my wife went with the falafel sandwich. Since I had ordered an entree, I got a salad while my wife did not and that came out first. It consisted of some heavily dressed lettuce and then a couple of slices of both tomatoes and cucumbers. The dressing had a slight mint flavor which I enjoyed and was refreshing on the salad. I also enjoyed how heavily dressed it was but can imagine others who would not. Once I had finished with the salad the rest of our food came out. My moussaka ended up being decent and I really enjoyed the bechamel on the top. Then while I liked both the meat and eggplant, I wish that there had been a bit of a thicker layer of each as most of the moussaka ended up being bechamel and potato. My wife enjoyed her falafel pita with her favorite part being the crunchy falafel. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. It has been a long time since I have had moussaka and so it definitely hit the spot for me and I would be interested in trying more of their food in the future. read more

Wow!! Low key local spot but plenty of tables and good and friendly service. We took our Lebanese friend who were visiting from out of town and he agreed "this is as good as it gets!" Falafel was the best I ever had. The hummus and babaganou were really good. I enjoyed my filet mignon kebab platter. The artwork on the walls in this place is just stunning... Although it's a bit dark and dingy, the staff is very warm and welcoming. You will be treated like family from the moment you enter till the moment you leave. And the food... Come for the spanakopita and stay for the Gyro... Both absolutely enormous and incredible. Had a fabulous lunch at Kassabs in the south side! We started with a mezza platter and grape leaves. The hummus was exceptional, very creamy and homemade flavor! The grape leaves were also delicious but I wish there was more meat inside! For our entrees we got salads- one house salad with filet and one fatoosh salad with chicken. Both were so good- the filet was done perfect on the house salad but I wish I would have gotten it on the fatoosh salad- the dressing on that one was just perfect, lemon and olive oil. Husband and I had the best Saturday lunch here! DH had the lamb pita sandwich. He loved it! It wasn't as flavorful as he likes things so he took some of my salad dressing to dress his pita sandwich. I had the house salad with added filet. I asked for the filet medium. It was cooked well. The best things... the hummus and pita was a very generous serving, and delicious. The iced tea was excellent. We also ordered the baked kibbe. It was so very good, especially with the hummus. They had raw kibbe on Saturday... but we were too nervous to try it. Baba, hummus, moussaka, lemon yogurt dip, kibbee baked or raw, grape leaves veggie/meat, minarets, loobee, salad with light delish dressing, shishabobs with tender flavorful meats... To celebrate special occasions we go to Mt Washington restaurants or Kessabs. They have polar opposite ambiance, with Kessabs being very casual, diner like. My boyfriend and I tried Kassab's for the first time this weekend and were so pleasantly surprised! When we walked in the restaurant was empty, but pretty small. We were seated right away and the waiter was very attentive and polite. They do have alcoholic drinks as well but we went for lunch so we didn't get any. I ordered the Chicken Shawarma and my boyfriend got the Filet Kabob. I was amazed with the flavors in my Chicken Shawarma. It was so delicious and also ginormous! I tried my boyfriends Filet and it was tasty too. I will definitely be going back! If you've never had Lebanese food and want to try something new you should definitely stop in. read more

To be honest, it was average. Maybe a little disappointing. This place is on the more expensive side when compared to other Mediterranean places, so I expected the quality to be quite high. It was not, sadly. I tried their rice pudding, meat pie, gyro sauce, and meat skewers. The meat pie was decent. I got delivery, so the condensation from it being hot did detract from the texture. But even with that aside, it wasn't very good. It was oddly sweet. The meat was dry and crumbly. I honestly would not recommend. The skewers were pretty good. You can't really go wrong with this sort of meat (actually, yes you can, if it's under or over cooked. But it was well cooked here). A bit on the costly side for the portion, but not terrible. Came with some vegetables as well, but not much else. I had to add the gyro sauce to get anything to dip my meat in. Nothing was included (while most places do include sauce with the meat). It's good quality sauce. Creamy and delicious, in a small container that costs just 75 cents so not too bad. The rice pudding was really good. It's anything I would want in a rice pudding: creamy, lightly sweet, and a good portion. You can still feel the rice kernels; it's well cooked with a good texture. And the price wasn't bad either. I would say this best menu item that I tried. All in all, I was somewhat disappointed with Kassabs. I was thinking of bringing guests into the restaurant, but after the experience, I'm probably not going to. It's not bad but just underwhelming. Better places in Pittsburgh for Mediterranean food. If you do come, get rice pudding as a dessert and load up on sauce. read more

It has been a few years since I've been to Kassab's. I'm so glad that we came back now that they're open to in person dining. Everything was amazing. I got the filet kabob platter. Wow! The meat was one of the most tender pieces of beef that I've ever had. It was also so well seasoned, moist and flavorful. It was a party in my mouth. You get six giant pieces of meat plus a huge plate of rice. The tomato sauce that it comes with was unbelievably flavorful on the rice. I wanted to pick it up and drink it. My husband got the mixed platter with filet and chicken. His filet was a little too rare to eat today. However, it will be perfect when he heats it up for leftovers. He said the chicken was pretty good with the hummus because it was a little bit too dry. We decided to get a side of hummus. So glad that we did because it was so creamy and delicious. OMG! We absolutely loved it with the pita and the filet or chicken. Definitely check them out either for takeout or to sit inside. We were the only people in there. I visited Kassab's for lunch on a weekday. Somehow I've didn't the restaurant existed. The restaurant is built into your typical E Carson St building sharing similar character to surrounding establishments. I ordered the lamb shank as that's always my go which came with a pretty large salad and I split the spicy hummus. This was a ton of food and an app wasn't needed. The lamb was great and came with additional sauce. I enjoyed the hummus and vegetables as well. I'll definitely return. read more

We recently had a nice meal at Kassab's before attending the first show of the 50th season of The City Theater. We shared several appetizers because everything looked so good. My favorite was the vegetarian stuffed grape leaves. They were larger than I've had from other places, and the flavor was perfect. We also had the green bean and tomato dish, which I've forgotten the name of. It was good, but in my opinion could have been better with more garlic. We also had the sleek and it was delicious! The service at Kassab's was just as I'd prefer - unobtrusive yet attentive. Our orders were taken, drinks were kept filled and the food was served promptly. Avoid this place (insert puke emoji here) If you're here for the short version: - several hairS in my food - a half ass apology from the waitress - and an owner who refused to speak with me after it happened (surprise, it was his hair!) If you're here for the long version, saddle up. I practically had to beg my husband to eat here tonight. We usually grab pizza on fridays but I've been working out and was feeling something more healthy & fresh. My mom is half Lebanese so I grew up on lentils & rice and as a vegetarian, this kind of cuisine is like my soul food. He reluctantly gave in... as long as it was take out. Turns out I wasn't able to find an official menu online because there's no website. We could only find a couple of photos people had posted, which in my experience isn't always accurate. I have a bad relationship with food... so it really stressed me out to not be able to order from an actual menu provided by the restaurant. That lead to us dining in. No worries, we're south siders trying to support a local business so it wasn't a big deal to go dahn there. When we got there, the place was empty at 6:30 on a Friday. That should've been our first sign. We ordered our meals from a friendly blonde waitress. According to the menu, my entree came with a house salad (listed on the menu for $5.99 a la carte) so I asked if I could sub for the house red lentil soup (listed a la cart for $3.99) This was no problem, after all, it saves them money, and the soup is already made! Win-win! The soup came out and was fabulous.... It was just the soul food I was looking for! The falafel entree on the other hand, was the toupee on the bald man's head. After enjoying just one falafel and a little rice, I came across a short dark hair buried in my rice (quick callback to my relationship with food) After some years of recovery therapy, I took a deep breath, reminded myself it was ok, accidents happen, removed the hair and the entire section of rice to another dish. After another internal pep talk, I finally talked myself into starting from the other side of the plate. Three bites later... another hair. CRINGE. I regretting going back for more! By this time there were two other tables dining. After finally getting the waitress's attention.. She asked from across the room how she could help. I discretely shook my head no, and waved her in closer so I could show her without disrupting the other diners. When she saw it for herself, she did seem genuinely surprised, and asked if I wanted more water. I said no, thanks... I just want you to take this plate away please. I looked down at my bowl of the lentil soup, (whose saucer I had used to dispose of the first hair and rice...) and saw a few bites left behind. Since this felt sage & comforting, I asked her if they could just pack me up a little soup to go to make up for it, and we could just move on. She was friendly said sure and walked away. She came back with an empty to go container for me to pack up the two bites I had left in the bowl. I apologized for the misunderstanding and asked for them to pack me up a fresh one to take home to eat when I'm feeling up to it. She told me there was no way they would give me a cup of soup for free. I explained that this would be the make it or break it factor to determine if I would give them a second chance or never come back. She shrugged it off. At this point I was starting to break out with a stress rash on my face and chest and took medicine to try and reduce my anxiety. I told her I would be outside trying to prevent a panic attack and that if she couldn't bring me a cup of soup to go, she should send the owner out front to talk to me. Again, this was all in effort of being discrete for their other customers, while also being my own advocate in this situation. I stood outside while my husband paid for his meal & came outside. They comp'd mine... as they should since it came with an added topping of human hair on a vegetarian dish... but no one ever came out to speak to me. I went in and reminded her I was waiting to speak to someone. She acted surprised, like this was brand new information, then went to the back to speak to someone. A women came out of the kitchen, stared at me for a minute, didn't say a word, then headed back in. When the waitress came out she said "unfortunately the owner is also the chef and he's busy making other people's food right now so he won't be coming out" I was shocked. Without even thinking I replied with "oh yeah, busy making food with his hair in it?" She didn't have anything to say. I was stunned. What kind of owner refuses to talk to a rightly disgruntled customer... who not only had SEVERAL hairs in their food... but YOUR very own hairs. At this point I was furious. I was done being kind & discrete about the matter so I made sure to let the other patrons know to check their food for hair before eating. I wish I could give negative stars. read more

Awesome food! I wish I would have tried this place a long time ago - but I'm glad I finally did. I stopped here for lunch on Friday. There was no one in the place except one other pick up order. I asked the wait was what her recommendation was and she suggested the kafta or the schawarma. I went with the steak schawarma. The beef was crispy and garlicy. There was a tasty sauce and crispy lettuce. I was missing a pickled veggie or two but overall very delicious. I also ordered the baba. Very creamy with a little twang. This place has some wonderful food!! Don't walk past it because it doesn't have a flashy entrance. I sat at the bar and it is BYOB. I started with the spinach lentil soup and OMG is it delicious!! If I could buy a gallon and keep it in my freezer I would. It is the ultimate soup for a winter day. It is healthy for you and so thick and creamy. For my main course I had the Moussaka. It was so flavorful and a perfect portion. The beef and eggplant were cooked perfectly with a nice balance of spices. The meal is served with a house salad with house dressing. WOW! I really enjoyed visiting this spot as the food and service were fantastic. For my meal I ordered the mixed grill and chose skewered lamb and kafta for this dish. The lamb was perfectly cooked and had a wonderful flavor (I just wish I received a little more), and the kafta had a great spice and it was a generous portion as well. The side house salad with feta was really delicious (one of my all time favorite salads) and the rice that was served with my skewers was honestly some of the best I have had. I thought the tomato sauce was nothing to write home about so I requested their garlic sauce and I am really glad I did. A southside hidden gem! Head to Kassab's if you are craving classic Middle Eastern and Mediterranean-style food. In my handful of times at Kassab's, I have yet to have a bad experience. Their customer service is top notch, and their food is not to be missed (although it is easy to pass up driving down East Carson Street). I have been to Kassab's with just two people, and with groups up to about 20 and they accommodated both with ease. Kassab's frequently has a $5 menu of favorites like hummus and even chicken shawarma. The mezza platter is great to start with (hummus, baba, tabbouli, feta and olives served with pita), but make sure you have a handful of people, since the appetizer is a healthy size. My favorite thing to get at Kassab's is the lamb sheesh kebab. On one occasion I even tried the raw kibbee, which I wouldn't try just anywhere, but was PHENOMENAL! Best Middle Eastern Restaurant in city. I used to work at Samrini's on Balmblvd. which used to be The best.... they are closed now, but Kassab's is really authentic... One caution. The Lamb Shank is super, but is cooked in a tomato basting. Ask to leave bast/rub off and put on side and be sure to put the shank under the broiler for a few minutes before serving. Red sauce or rub almost overpowers the taste of the lamb---- still good however! read more
