One of my favorite spots for lunch in Oakland, with a central location in Schenley Plaza. The line is never too long and the food is ready quickly. Lots of nice places nearby to sit outside on a warm day. Based on a customer I overheard on a recent visit, they also offer order-ahead if you're in a hurry. Their shawarma wraps are just the right size for lunch (and also under $10). They offer several sides; I've tried the hummus (not too salty, like many hummuses, but a touch bland) and grape leaf wraps (large portion). One time I upgraded my wrap to a platter with rice and pita and it was way too much food (a mountain of rice). I've seen their platters with fries instead of rice and they are also ginormous due to the mountain of fries. read more

I used to come here as a student when I was at Pitt and it never disappointed. I recently stopped by here with my siblings and it was just as I remembered it. Very friendly and fast staff. My siblings and I were waiting outside and one of the employees walked out of the shop to bring it to us! How kind. The food is delicious as always, you cannot go wrong with anything you order from here. Now that I'm not anywhere near the restaurant anymore, sometimes I get a craving for this place and my heart breaks a bit on the inside knowing I don't have easy access to it anymore. The restaurant (if that's what you would call it??) has some nice outdoor seating and a beautiful view of Cathy, what more could you want??? I will definitely always stop by here whenever I am in Pittsburgh. LOVE this place!!!! read more

The food served here is really excellent! I have been craving some tasty Middle Eastern food, and this is just the place to get some. Decent location too. I tried their chicken shawarma arabi as well as the baklava. The food was delicious. I haven't seen many reviews of their baklava, but decided to give it a try either way. The baklava wasn't anything special. I believe it is made in house though. Good, but could have used more syrup. And somewhat expensive, although good portion. Honestly not really sure if the baklava is worth it. However, the chicken! The wrap! The saj! This was delicious. If you come here, you must try the Arabi (chicken Arabi or beef Arabi, either one). The saj bread it is wrapped in is perfectly crispy and incredible. The chicken is quite good as well. Nice little chunks of pickles throughout the wrap. Outside of the wrap, you get a little container of vegetables, like thinly sliced carrots and a few pickles. You also get a ton of fries with the meal. These fries were quite tasty, surprisingly. And I'm not usually much of a fry fan. They also have this incredible garlic sauce, which is used up very quickly. It's also included inside the arabi. I would buy a bottle of that sauce if they sold it. All in all, the food at Omar's Halal Grill is amazing. It's not too expensive and the portions are quite large. The quality is very high, and I would definitely recommend the Arabi. read more

Stopped in for a beef shawarma this afternoon. There were a couple people ahead of me in line and they gave up and were exasperated with the wait. That made it a little quicker for me thank heavens. It's not clear that you order from the right window and pickup from the left window so I think that may have led to a lot of unnecessary standing around for some people too. The shawarma with saj bread is quite good and the toppings were plentiful. Aside from the wait and unclear queuing this was a good experience and I'd go back again. read more

Stopped by here after visiting the Carnegie museum. This place is on the strip and is ran by a mother and son. The mom was doing the cooking and man, she knows what she's doing. I ordered the beef shawarma with side of fries. The beef was so juicy and tender. The fries were so delicious, crispy, and perfectly salted. I usually eat my fries with ketchup but these fries did not need ketchup or additional flavoring at all. This place accepts both cash and credit card. Service was 5-10 minutes. Plenty of table seating on the strip or you can sit on the grass. read more

This is a kiosk located in schenley plaza, so there is obviously no indoor seating, but lots of outdoor benches and a few tables nearby. The chicken shawarma wrap was good and easy to eat on the go. I thought the hummus was very weird and not good tasting. It was overwhelmingly lemony, almost tasted like a cleaning product. I didn't taste any tahini flavor. The texture was kind of watery and not smooth. Came with super dry, tough pita bread. I'm not sure if this is a different style of hummus than what I am used to from other halal restaurants, but regardless, it tasted bad. read more

DO NOT get any frozen drinks from the lemonade or cherry slushie machines they have out front. If you look at the nozzles there is black mold growing on the inside! Just arrived in town and wanted a quick bite delivered to my hotel. I love a good Greek salad, and Omar's Halal Grill came through! I ordered the house salad with chicken shawarma. The salad container was packed full with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, cabbage, and parsley. The dressing was tangy and not overpowering. It was mixed well throughout the veggies. There was a generous dollop of garlic sauce included. The chicken shawarma was very tasty. I had a couple of nice crisp, flavorful cuts, but it was all tender and well-seasoned. This place is the absolute greatest if you don't mind eating outside. There are no real drawbacks. This tiny spot on Schenley Plaza serves authentic shawarma with amazing flavors for a great price. A full meal can be as little as $10. I adore the beef pita wrap. I don't really know what Tahini sauce is but it's good. The service can be just a bit slow (10-20 minutes) but you can watch them cook and be certain everything you eat is fresh. Mmmm such savory food! This little location is easy to reach by foot, and it's surrounded by spots to sit to eat your meal. I've come here multiple times, and the folks who run the place have always been helpful and careful in the way they prepare the food. You do have to wait awhile before your food is ready, but it's always worth the wait. I've had the veggie wrap over and over, and I'm always pleasantly surprised how tasty it is without being too salty or greasy. I stopped at Omar's yesterday, deciding to try it instead of the pizza I had intended. I got a beef gyro. Wonderful. It came as a tightly wrapped tube instead of the stuffed pocket I'm used to. the meat was perfectly roasted, points there, but the real star was the seasoning, tangy and savory. One of the those places where I wished I could leave more than 5 stars. I had the beef Shawerma with sahlab for dessert and there are no complaints. Easily one of the best Shawermas I ever had. The bread and fries had a really good seasoning that I've never tasted before. A small shawarma stand with beef and chicken (no lamb). Turkish spices very well done with both beef and chicken. Hummus made fresh but with canned chick peas, but very tasty and blended well. Raj bread especially good, skip the pita. Was rather slow for a small stand but worth the wait. Very friendly and helpful owners that are there all the time. Definitely one to check out. read more

As with many cultural spots, the chef was preparing the meat with bare hands. To me that is the staple of good cooking but the turn off was when he opened the window after touching raw chicken. I still planned to try the beef shawarma until I came back at opening time to find the cook smoking his hookah pipe with same bare hands. He didn't see me standing there for about a full minute and the smoke was blown right into the raw meat on the spit. I'm no stranger to open food stands as a DC native but this was too much for me. Needless to say I spent my monies elsewhere. Definitely recommend the Porch right across the path. read more
