Every know and then you come across a sleeper spot. I will not go on about how delicious the hot dogs are. I will say they are perfectly cooked and prepared. The buns are steamed to perfection. Like many others, I read about Karmen's and decided to try their all/ beef hot dogs. While attending Cal, I lived around the corner from Casper's with a C on MacDonald ( now Corkey's Famous Hot Dogs) and fueled with many a pork/beef hot dog! The same crunch of skin being punctured I savored back in the 1970s was evident when I bit into a Karmen's dog. At both spots I loved watching the staff precisely slice ripened tomatoes & sweet onions and add mustard & relish. Such pride in preparation of each dog. Although I agree with some reviewers that the pork/beef dogs are juicier, I love both versions. At Karmen's, my husband & I were greeted by 2 friendly females (one who had worked at this spot since age 19). The sit-down area was very clean and tables were cleaned after each guest's exit. I'm happy to report that the legacy of Kasper's Hot Dogs lives on at Karmen's in Castro Valley! I was a huge fan of Kasper's Hot Dogs, which was an East Bay institution. I was very sad to learn that the owner decided to retire and close the remaining locations. Thankfully, Carmen (who worked at this CV location) has taken over ownership of the business and is serving the same exact 100% beef hot dogs along with the rest of the menu, including tamales. Btw, I love that she named the restaurant Karmen's with a "K" as a nod to the Kasper Koojoolian family legacy. If you're craving a Chicago style hot dog, I highly recommend you go to Karmen's! At first I was so sad this location was closing (so many Kaspers and Caspers in the Bay Area have closed). However the franchise owner would not sell this location to Carmen who has managed it for many many years and so she kept the location and changed the name to Karmen's. The dogs, nachos, and tamales are still available! Can't wait to keep coming here for years to come! read more
