I was sad to hear the owner was shutting down but glad to hear that it was staying open with new owners. I ask myself all the time why do I go here and spend that kind of money for a hot dog? It's because I love the bun it's steamed it's soft I love the spicy dog the right amount of heat, I love the chopped onions I get extra relish but most of all it's the lemonade I love the lemonade. Visited Casper's Hot Dog with a "K" today since it was in the same shopping center as Crossroads Specialty Foods in Castro Valley. It's been ages since I've been to Casper's and/or Kasper's Hot Dogs in awhile but grew up eating their hot dogs as a kid so visiting was a bit of nostalgia. Casper's originated as a San Francisco Bay Area-based chain of hot dog restaurants established in 1934 and Kasper's is a branch-off of the original and no longer affiliated...though their menu options are the same. This location is clean with friendly staff...all condiments in bowls sitting on the counter for hot dog prep based on your request. I opted for a chili dog and it hit the spot. Nothing fancy but the hot dog has that slight snap which is nice. Pricing for a hot dog these days is about $6 without a drink or chips. Adding those items start at $2.25 each. Friendly folks and good dogs. I got the Pickle Dog and Cajun Link with the link being my favorite of the two as it had a great snap and a little kick. The other one was just alright as the pickles were the basic Mt. Olive jar condiment. The pickle spheres were too thick, mushy, and sour, ending up overpowering the sausage. I'd recommend just getting a regular hot dog instead as it alone tasted great and had the perfect texture. I wasn't a fan of their in-house Orange Soda, as it was too sweet for me, but it does taste like they turned an orange cream pop into a soft drink, so I recommend giving that a try too. I will likely come back to try their Chili Dog next time. read more

Not how I remembered it to be when I was a kid. I was craving Kasper's hot dogs and hot tamale. I was actually surprised that they were still around in a small shopping center that has had businesses come and go over the many years. I was also surprised that there were quite a lot of people inside already seated for lunch / others who were standing in line to order - it must have been the time of day and maybe people who regularly visited. Two people on staff were manning the front - one to handle the food and the other for payment. The menu is fairly simple and they have most things prepped - like the onions, tomatoes, ketchup, mustard, relish, jalapeños I think they were... the day I visited they were not selling the tamales and I was disappointed. It was a little difficult to understand what the reasoning was for when I had asked them. Prices have inflated over the years - I think they doubled since I remember them years ago. For that reason and the way I had high expectations of my nostalgic childhood come to be once I got to bite into Kasper's again, it wasn't enough to make me want to go back and spend that much money for something that was mediocre at best. I think I can put together my own at home or I'd rather go to NYC and get a hot dog from a street vendor. I did like how they never changed the interior though -- aesthetics appeared to be the same as before like I was walking into a time capsule. Chips are expensive these days too, lol. I remember when I was a kid in middle school and I would pay 75 cents for a bag (that was also expensive back then! sodas were also $1 at school, lol). Met with a couple of wait people behind the counter, one who assembles the dog and the other man the cash register and drinks. They like to engage with the diners. I was working across the street and in need of a quick bite. I stumbled upon this hidden gem that you can easily overlook by not knowing it's here. Located in a corner shopping center if you can call it that, with about 4 small businesses and a nice sized parking lot. I ordered the Cajun dog with sauerkraut, mustard and cheese and my coworker got a chili dog. Idk if it was because I was at the end of my shift and starving or if this place has been in business for over 40 years because of the great taste that I experienced. I only ordered 1 dog and chips to hold me over but if you want to make a whole meal of it then 2 dogs will definitely do the trick for the biggest of appetites. Just to double back on the years of service, they obviously have committed regulars that come here. There were a handful of people in line that were talking to the ladies behind the counter as if they frequent here often. With that said the employees were very nice, friendly and efficient in their work knocking the line down and getting us on our way in good time. Sidenote: I originally thought this was the other hot dog joint Caspers which is very comparable and almost identical. Be advised, I have been to this Kasper's on 3 separate occasions, having driven from Oakland to eat some food. Each time I arrived as the store was 'supposed' to be open....but it never opened on time. I had elderly people in my care so I had to leave without eating because it was not open when it said it should be! Also, I went on a Sunday to buy many hot dogs for a football gathering, only to learn they are closed on Sundays! What food provider is closed on weekends? I no longer will go to this Castro Valley Kaspers and instead, I will go to the Caspers in Hayward which is always open. I am very disappointed with the Castro Valley location. read more

I absolutely love Kaspers!! I have been going to Kaspers since I was little and their hot dogs have always been the same- and I love that consistency!! When I go to Kaspers, I usually just pick up my food and bring it home or bring it somewhere to eat it. I never eat at the restaurant, however there is plenty of seating if you do want to eat at the restaurant. I typically order a hot dog with ketchup, mustard, pickle, and cheese and it is delicious! Kaspers steam their hot dogs and buns. They also have polish dogs and a few other items on the menu. They used to have tamales, however they do not sell them anymore. I was sad to hear that because I liked these tamales. However, I believe this was out of their control. You can also buy individual chips with your hot dog. Kaspers has a few drinks that you can get as well. I really like their lemonade! This Kaspers location is known for their chili so if you are a chili person, I definitely recommend that you try it out! I forgot to mention that the people who work at Kaspers are super friendly and I enjoy seeing them when I go in. Overall, Kaspers is my favorite place to get hot dogs. I love their hot dogs and they taste the same from when I was little and so Kaspers always reminds me of my childhood! If I am wanting a hot dog, Kaspers is my go to place. Kasper's with a "K"! Don't be fooled by Casper's with a "C" if you're looking for the original Chicago-style hot dog from the Armenian who started it all in Oakland, Kasper Koojoolian. These are the BEST hot dogs in the East Bay...bar none! These hot dogs are 100% beef, unlike the ones sold by Casper's. This is easily verified by looking at the ingredients of the Casper's hot dogs sold at Costco. Oakland, San Leandro, Castro Valley, Pleasanton, and Concord are the last Kasper's locations that are still running. I've seen the Fremont and Hayward locations close in recent years so I'm hoping the other five are here to stay! On a related note, I would love it if the "Original" location on 45th and Telegraph in Oakland would reopen. That place has been closed since 2003. Anyway, whenever I come to Kasper's, I always order the 1/4lb-er with cheese, tomatoes, and ketchup. YUM!...I'm hungry just thinking about it! I've always enjoyed Kasper's hot dogs and was pleased to learn that there is a location in Castro Valley. I had the cheese dog, macaroni salad, and a Coke which I had hope to enjoy there at the restaurant. However, the service was less than pleasant. The two women at the counter were having a somewhat heated discussion punctuated with F-bombs. Neither one of them had any idea that they were putting on a pretty sad performance. It got so bad as I was paying for my food that I had to tell them to knock it off. I asked for a bag and had my Kasper's hot dog lunch in the peaceful ambience of my car. I helped the Utility Crew lay a cement pad for a Memorial Bench ,then had to go to another park with a co worker and hand load 40 - 80lb bags of cement and a pallet of bricks in Sweltering heat. I had recently started back at Casper's on foothill in Hayward as I went to Kasper's in Castro Valley only to find it closed when should have been open. I think the owner has a soft spot for hiring the less fortunate that have issues. It is a uniquely East Bay hot dog restaurant that I have been living off of since I could eat them. As a child, I used to go often to the one off of Foothill Boulevard, but this one has been a staple for me since High School (about the time it opened in this small shopping center). However long I have been going here, it has always felt homey. The lady who runs it gives the warmest smiles and greetings when you come in the door. She explains everything and aims to please on every order she or her coworkers make. That alone sets this place apart from others that put number of visitors over the quality of interaction with them. Each hotdog and bun is steamed prior to use. All ingredients are fresh. My favorite is their cheese dog. Although, on occasion, I love their tamales, too. I usually add a drink and some chips. It makes a fabulous lunch that one can eat either inside or take to-go.
