As someone who moved to Castro Valley from Hayward, I can honestly say that the choices for Mexican…read morefood isn't as plentiful. Im kinda particular about Mexican food because not many places has the more exotic meats choices like cabeza, lengua, and my favorite tripa. So as I was settling in to Castro Valley, I was very happy to have found Tacos El Campo. I have been here about 10 times in the 7 or so months I have been living here and have enjoyed every meal I ever had. The family that runs the place is very nice every time I come in. They do offer a discount if you pay cash to make sure you disclose that when ordering if you are paying by cash or card. The food comes out really fast, Id recommend ordering there in person instead of calling in so your food can be hotter. A MUST try is their vampiros, which I have never seen on a menu before coming here. It is basically a marriage between a taco and a grilled cheese sandwich. I have been to a lot of taquerias and not many places have these on the menu so I cant stress enough that you should give these a try. If I was younger, I could easily put away 5 of these and a big bottle of Mexican coke. If I tried that now, Id be asleep for the rest of the day and probably gain 5 pounds but if you dont care, go for it, it's a good way to put yourself to sleep. I have tried their burritos and tacos and they are solid, I usually get tripa or cabeza. Their tacos some with a side of grilled peppers and onions. There is also a good sized salsa bar as well. While I do miss Hayward, Tacos El Campa has made adjusting to life in Castro Valley much easier. This is my go-to spot for Mexican food and gets my vote for best Mexican spot in Castro Valley.

I've only had the al pastor and fish tacos...unfortunately, wasn't a fan of chopped tilapia but the pork had a slight sweetness which I liked. Pretty standard and nothing wow but what I like is their salsa bar! Plus a STAR! Variety of items like pico de gallo, hot/spicy sauce, salsa verde, orange sauce and Mexican pickled vegetables (escabeche). Friend really liked the pork chili verde plate and said it flavorful . Plenty of items on the menu and will try their burrito, breakfast, nachos or a combination plate and agua fresca next time. Place is clean with tables for dine in. Service straightforward and wouldn't say it was welcoming (as noted in other reviews) when I visited. Small discount (credit card fee) offered when paying in cash. Private lot parking so you don't have to find a spot on the busy Boulevard. Drive thru available for call in orders/pickup

Ive…read morebeen told by a lot of folks that the food here is delicious and judging from the line I saw when I came in, it looks to be the case. Note, this is more of a review of the taqueria attached to the market and not the market itself, though it looked like it had all the essentials. Meat wise, it's definitely missing my favorites but in this case, it's actually a good thing because it means I'll order things I dont normally order as much. I went with a chivo (goat meat) taco and a super carne asada (grilled steak) burrito. I also picked up a bag of chicharron con carne (pork cracklings with meat) and a side of refried beans. They lady that took care of me was super nice. I love places like this because it gives me a chance to practice my Spanish. What's so awesome about this place is that they are grilling the meats right in front of you, which makes me want to order everything. I took everything home to the family they all loved it. The steak was super juicy and it might be one of the better carne asada I had. Everything tasted super fresh. The chivo taco was very moist and delicious as well. As for the chicharrons, it's chicharrons, it's almost always going to be good and the beans, were delicious as well, wish I ordered some arroz on the side to go with it. I bought the pre-packaged chicharrons by the checkout but if you want yours a little warmer, you can buy at at the meat department in the back of the store. All in all, Im definitely coming back and looking forward to trying their other meat options like al pastor and barbacoa. Given how small their work space is and how busy they might be, be prepared to give some extra time, especially if you are like me and bringing the food back home.

The location has been consistent in delivering great food--I always get either their carnitas cheese fries or their barbacoa cheese fries with a bit of consommé (broth) added to it. Their cucumber limon agua fresca always hits, and I recommend their sandia fresca when it's available. Over the years, it's been a place where I have positive memories, as it carried my wife and me through tough days back in college. This was, and still is, a great and affordable meal that acts as both lunch and dinner due to how generous the portion is. The only caveat I have since trying the location after a few years of not stopping by is that they changed their French fries. I think right now they cut potatoes and deep-fry them, versus what it was before, where they were more "restaurant style" fries. The texture is slightly different; however, the flavor has been consistent and still tastes like what it was 10 years ago. A true hole in the wall--the only issue is parking can be quite hard to find, lol! Service is fast if you make it before peak lunch or dinner hours, haha! Love this place.

Food: Al Pastor Taco - good, generous amount of meat, topped with diced onions, cilantro, and salsa verde, the al Pastor had good flavor, wish there was a bit more char and pineapple but pretty tasty, corn tortilla was excellent, soft and pliable with nice toasted corn flavor Carne asada - very good, perfectly cooked steak that was tender with a char from the grill, also topped with onions, cilantro and salsa verde, same great corn tortilla, favorite of the proteins that we tried Suadero - okay, brisket was a bit dry and had the shredded texture reminding me more of carnitas, same toppings as the other taco, generous portion of meat, this one benefited from an extra squeeze of lime juice and some salsa roja from the salsa bar Service was solid, order at the truck window grab a number and wait for your corder to be called. Wait for our food was about 10-15 minute. They do have a topping and salsa bar with two types of salsa, limes, radishes and cucumber. Overall really enjoyed Tacos Gonzales, more of a 4.5 star overall, food was flavorful and freshly prepared. The carne asada was some of the best I've ever had in the bay area.

We were brought fresh tortilla chips to start, which were great, along with a Lazy Susan-style setup of salsas and toppings. Unfortunately, this was a bit of a miss for me--there were raw onions, raw jalapeños, a green salsa, and more of a plain red hot sauce rather than a true salsa. I would have preferred something more traditional like a good pico de gallo or a more balanced house salsa. Ordered a bottle of Dos Equis, which at $7 felt a bit steep. Most entrées were priced between $17-$25, which is pretty standard. I had the carnitas and they were excellent--really flavorful and well-prepared. I also tried a bite of the chile relleno, which was solid as well. Overall, the food was good and the service was strong. That said, it's a bit out of the way for me, and while I enjoyed it, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come back.
