"Super Burrito"with mounds of tortilla folded into the burrito.
    Nicole J.

I've been frequenting The Burrito Shop since I was a little girl. My Mom used to get her nails done across the street from the one on College Avenue in Oakland, and this is where I fell in love with the Super Ground Beef Burrito with jalapeños on the side. This review is a little over 2 weeks past due. I contemplated on if I were going to post. What brought me to moving forward is that my last three visits have not been acceptable. I know that we are in the weirdest times and times are tough for everyone. But, I feel if you're going to continue to run your business run it with the utmost respect, quality, quantity and your loyal customers in mind. These are the people who keep the lights on. The Super Burrito is now the size of a regular burrito. You'll see in the pictures attached, how much tortilla is folded into the burrito of sparse fillings. The folded mound of tortilla on the right and you can clearly see the fillings on the left. Super now obliviously just means adding sour cream. Well upon my last visit as I'm chewing a bite, the food that's in my mouth isn't dissolving. It's because apparently it's a piece of the meat wrapper or a piece of parchment paper. Either way it was inedible. I was baffled! Then I got scared. Then I became disgusted, because I really didn't know what I was chewing on. If you look at the picture, it looks as if it's a piece of lettuce, or even tortilla, however it's not. I haven't given up on The Burrito Shop just yet. I just think it's time to try the other locations that are left. This is just the closest to my home.

Ordered a shredded chicken burrito and added prawns found out the hard way they don't clean their prawns so prawn waste is in the burrito AND some shell for an extra layer of crunch! Bon appetit added a star because the chicken is good and the service is good

We got the nacho plate with two kinds of meat - Birria and Al pastor. Both meats were incredible,…read morethe birria was stewed well, flavorful and tender and not grisly like some stew meats can be. The Al pastor was nicely grilled and not too fatty, much better than the last time I was there. My only complaint is the guacamole does not taste nor look like it was made on premise. Otherwise, it was one of the best nacho plates I've had! They have an open salsa bar with lots of choices for salsas as well as pickles and pico de gaio. Chips are the thick restaurant style ones I like.

As someone who moved to Castro Valley from Hayward, I can honestly say that the choices for Mexican…read morefood isn't as plentiful. Im kinda particular about Mexican food because not many places has the more exotic meats choices like cabeza, lengua, and my favorite tripa. So as I was settling in to Castro Valley, I was very happy to have found Tacos El Campo. I have been here about 10 times in the 7 or so months I have been living here and have enjoyed every meal I ever had. The family that runs the place is very nice every time I come in. They do offer a discount if you pay cash to make sure you disclose that when ordering if you are paying by cash or card. The food comes out really fast, Id recommend ordering there in person instead of calling in so your food can be hotter. A MUST try is their vampiros, which I have never seen on a menu before coming here. It is basically a marriage between a taco and a grilled cheese sandwich. I have been to a lot of taquerias and not many places have these on the menu so I cant stress enough that you should give these a try. If I was younger, I could easily put away 5 of these and a big bottle of Mexican coke. If I tried that now, Id be asleep for the rest of the day and probably gain 5 pounds but if you dont care, go for it, it's a good way to put yourself to sleep. I have tried their burritos and tacos and they are solid, I usually get tripa or cabeza. Their tacos some with a side of grilled peppers and onions. There is also a good sized salsa bar as well. While I do miss Hayward, Tacos El Campa has made adjusting to life in Castro Valley much easier. This is my go-to spot for Mexican food and gets my vote for best Mexican spot in Castro Valley.

We were brought fresh tortilla chips to start, which were great, along with a Lazy Susan-style setup of salsas and toppings. Unfortunately, this was a bit of a miss for me--there were raw onions, raw jalapeños, a green salsa, and more of a plain red hot sauce rather than a true salsa. I would have preferred something more traditional like a good pico de gallo or a more balanced house salsa. Ordered a bottle of Dos Equis, which at $7 felt a bit steep. Most entrées were priced between $17-$25, which is pretty standard. I had the carnitas and they were excellent--really flavorful and well-prepared. I also tried a bite of the chile relleno, which was solid as well. Overall, the food was good and the service was strong. That said, it's a bit out of the way for me, and while I enjoyed it, I probably wouldn't go out of my way to come back.

My wifes chicken taco had plenty of chicken and she said it was ok. The chile relleno was thickly battered and a bit bland. My Molcajetes had beef, chicken, chorizo and shrimp. The only thing edible was the shrimp. The chorizo was hard and dry. The beef was literally like chewing on leather. Over cooked and dry as sawdust, I had quite a time just cutting it into bite sized pieces. Unedible! The chicken was not much better. The server asked if everything was ok. I calmly told him no and what the issue was. I said I will pay for it but you can throw it away. He offered something that I couldn't understand what he said and I said to get rid of it, I don't want it. Didn't offer to reduce or remove the cost. I usually roll with it when things aren't great but this needed to be addressed. As expensive as things are restaurants can't rest on their laurels. You had better be on your "A" game or you will be out of buisness. I literally do not want mexican food in my future for some time based on our experience at this restaurant. -5 stars.

The bartender/server was attentive and quick with our drinks and food. Ordered the ground beef tacos and their version of loaded fries along with a pitcher of margs. The fries were bomb. They season their fries like curly fries, so flavorful. The steak on the fries was cooked well and didn't get any fatty pieces. The tacos also had good flavor. The margs did the job too. We had a group of 10 people come in on a Sunday afternoon and this is my take: ATMOSPHERE First of all the restaurant was freezing. It was literally 63 degrees (see pic) and the staff were wearing ski jackets and hoodies to stay warm. I went up to ask the staff to turn the heater on and they said only the owner has access to the thermostat that was under a locked box. I asked them to give him a call and I would talk to him as they seemed scared to make the request. They reported back that he agreed to turn up the thermostat. The entire restaurant was dimly lit and gloomy. They probably keep the lights low to hide the dirty floors and tables. See pic. FOOD As soon as I saw the menu I could tell it was Americanized Mexican food and had zero hopes of anything tasting good or authentic. The food ended up tasting better than expected and by that I mean it wasn't bad but it was flavorless. Just dead. They need to learn how to use spices and produce when cooking to liven up their flavors. All of the salsas, sauces and guacamole were pre-made and tastes like they can from a can, jar or previously frozen. None of it tasted homemade. SERVICE The servers were very nice although probably unhappy to work at a miserable place.
