Reviewing for the beer/atmosphere - not the food situation! (Which, as previous reviewers mentioned, needs to be fixed...that line gets LONG! and I've never had the patience to wait :) Anyways, the atmosphere at Kardinal Hall is fun! Both times I've been, it hasn't been insanely crowded so I haven't had to wait much to get served at the bar - perhaps the initial rush is over...It does indeed get quite loud inside, but don't most beer halls get quite loud inside? The outside area is also really nice with lots of seating. Now for beer, the tap selection was decent with ~8 international beers, ~8 domestic, and ~8 local/collaborations. They also have a number of cans and bottles that I didn't even begin to look at. For non-beer drinkers, there's also cider, wine and mixed drinks. As a side note, Marcus who works at Kardinal Hall is awesome! He helped take care of a broken glass situation and was a pleasure to talk to in the process, so kudos to Marcus! In sum, I think KH still has some kinks to work out but will ultimately be a staple. read more

We visited opening week and really enjoyed the modern beer hall vibe (decor, food, and drink) as well as game offerings. There fare can mostly be described as German with a twist. We got the "kasekrainer" sausage, "das boot" schnitzelwhich, waffle iron mac n' cheese, and cheese curd poutine, the latter two of which are absolute MUSTS - so yummy. Can you tell we were hungry?! They also have an extensive draft beer selection, which makes sense since it is owned by the same people that own Beer Run. Seating is picnic-style and community tables which are conducive to playing the many table games that they offer. We played Jenga while we waited for our food and then headed out to their huge biergarten-esque patio for some legit Bocce ball after we ate. Outside they have two permanent courts, tons of seating, and heat lamps for year round use! The service is a problem as other reviewers have mentioned, in that it is self-serve and all-around a bit chaotic. I generally prefer the self-serve style (go to bar for drinks, register for food, seat yourself, etc.) to having a server, and it works for them in all aspects except for the food. The line can be long and slow and moreover it cuts right through the main seating area, making it difficult to get in and out whether you are in line or seated. Another detractor is that the restaurant is not near much else so you likely won't be walking to it or bar hopping after. read more

While the food and the drinks are good. They have no wait staff due to covid. You have to go and order your food and drinks at two different stands in the restaurant, each taking 30 minutes and only one staff member working . This involves large groups of people closely waiting in line, which defeats the purpose of what they are trying to do for social distancing. I would never come back here during covid. read more

Kardinal Hall has great drinks and a great atmosphere. However, their food is sub par. The beer cheese tastes cheap, like honey mustard mixed with water and pimento. Came here for the first time tonight with a few friends, initially impressed with the environment and atmosphere. The beer selection was relatively well priced, however I was underwhelmed with the food. We ordered the ribs and they came out burnt, tough, and honestly kind of disgusting. The potato salad was good, however the salad that came with it was interesting and not that good. I really wanted to like it but I just couldn't. The atmosphere is solid for a beer hall/place to catch a game. The outside seating is decent - all picnic benches, like most tables inside. Food is not very good, inconsistent. My child was served burned chicken nuggets, spoiled house made applesauce. I've had some okay salads there, but the proteins always leave something to be desired. Like Three Notch'd at IX, Kardinal Hall is a great place for group gatherings. It's self-seating with a long bar, so you can easily order your drinks, and a separate food-ordering section, so you can easily order food. I had the BBQ butternut squash with pickled onions substituted for the green bean slaw. It was really good and the reason why I'm giving Kardinal Hall 5 stars. It was also really cheap at $8 but also really small that I had to order a pretzel, which is really large, to fill my belly. The pretzel is so soft and delicious, but I forgot to ask for it without butter/if it contains butter, so make sure you do so to make it vegan. Lastly, I recommend you try two local creations: Chickapig, a locally created board game (they also have other games for your entertainment), and the Passionfruit Gose locally brewed at Three Notch'd. read more

My favorite place to have a drink or quick meal in Charlottesville! Kardinal Hall did a great job of creating a modern interpretation of a traditional beer garden. Also, so glad to see the old Coca Cola building revitalized and full of life. It's a family friendly atmosphere and is a great place to bring groups. They have a wide selection of beers on tap, and I enjoy being able to get a liter of my favorite brew. The board games they have available are a lot of fun to enjoy with friends, and they have several TVs that let them show sporting events. Their food is delicious, I highly recommend their bratwurst and fries. I wish ordering beer at the bar was more efficient, it'd be great if they added a few waitstaff to run beers as traditional beer gardens in Munich have. Hopefully people also begin to realize that the large tables are communal as the popularity of Kardinal Hall often means it's very full inside. ** Oh, go for lunch and play bocce outside! Kardinal Hall hosted and catered a brunch after my daughter's wedding. They did an outstanding job! Many people told us that the food was great and the service was excellent. The recommended chocolate chip cookies were a big hit. The venue was perfect! But it was the planning and oversight by Chrissy that made the whole package a success! Despite it being her day off, she was present for the party on Sunday and offered to spread a bucket of wildflowers that we had brought to the party. The food was great! It was a bit pricey, but the whole environment was so fun. There are bocce courts and tons of boards games to play while you eat. You have the choice to sit inside or outside. Had a private event for a group last Thursday. Everyone really enjoyed the space and food. We got the cheese platter and charcuterie platter. The food was authentically German and great for a large group. The drinks were well priced and the beer selection was awesome. Malcolm, the manager, did a great job taking care of our group. We went to KH last night to eat some of their delicious but overpriced Poutine ($11). This was 7oclock on a Saturday, and they told us they were out of potatoes. So then we decided to get a delicious but overpriced pretzel ($9), and we were told they were out of pretzels as well. So we left and went to Bodos, where they were NOT out of bagels. I understand that if it were opening night, or say 11PM on a Tuesday, a restaurant could run out of fundamental foods like potatoes, but 7PM on a Saturday for a place that has been open for over a year? For the life of me, I have not been able to figure out the KH business model. You have to go to the bar to order, go another place to order food, the food comes out randomly (some people got their French fries before their burgers and some got their burgers and the fries showed up 30 minutes later. The sandwiches and burgers are blah and don't even come with a side dish. The food generally is ok but certainly not worth putting up with the poor service. Last night was about the 5th time I've been there and doubtful I'll give them another try. There was 11 of us at a table that we had to stake out and hover over in order to sit down because there is no host. None of us were pleased. Hopefully they'll re-think the way they do business. So disappointing. This was one of our favorite spots, especially on Wednesday for their sausage and fries special. Yummy sausage on a pretzel roll, hot fries sprinkled with garlic and cheese, and a long list of beers - what's not to like? Sometime over the fall or winter things changed, and not for the better. Last time I ordered a burger and it was so dry I couldn't eat it. Ok, an "off night", it happens. Tonight I got my favorite sausage and it was dry and served on a stale, dry pretzel roll. The fries were over cooked and both my husband and I got nothing but small pieces of fries, like what was left at the bottom of fryer, and there was none of the garlic and cheese sprinkle. We came to watch UVA in the NCAA finals and called ahead to ensure we didn't need a reservation. When we got here (3 hours before the game) there were three very obviously underaged frat boys reserving three six-tops for their "pledge brothers". We waited at least 20 minutes for these "brothers" to show before we sat down, since the hostess had assured us it was "first come first serve", they called over their cronies on the staff and loudly whispered "tell them we have a reservation" and kicked us out of their empty table since it was their "territory". A thoroughly corrupt staff serving minors alcohol, obviously an embarrassment to the community. Would not support this place. On top of that, they placed a "hold on food" during a night when people are expecting food. Do not waste your time at this joke of a bar. read more

This establishment is best for the locals, UVA students and UVA ALumni who meet up before a game. When you honestly take a look at this place the food is bland, service is very slow and the staff is overall uninterested in providing good service. We recently went there and the wait was very long 30 minutes for our order. I think the purposely take their time so you will order another drink while you wait for average food. We were sitting at the table when the "bus boy" was cleaning off some tables and he obviously overloaded and as he was walking back to the kitchen water and other liquids splashed out of the tub onto two of our party and the table behind us. Went to this place for a few drinks for a friend of my wife's birthday, she ordered a drink for us and asked to close the bill off.. After waiting a few minutes for the bill she asked where her card was, barman yells rudely that he always places the card in the same place on the bar and then ignores us for 5 more minutes. We ask for the manager he says he will call the manager. We wait 5 minutes more then he tell us to go wait in the corner, 10 minutes later a manager comes by says nothing more than what is the name on the card. He wanders off looks on the floor for a minute then proceeds bar side and starts stacking glasses!!? At this point we walked away and decided it's time to start cancelling the card. 5 minutes later the manager comes with the card, turns out it was behind the bar where the cards are kept, nice! 25 minutes of stress later, no apology, drink on the house? Forget it! Don't waste your time guys this place has had one drink from my wallet, no more! WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER!! read more

Sad face. This is typically one of my favorite places in Charlottesville (yay brats fries and beers), but we had a tough experience today at brunch. Ordered the Spicy Chicken and Waffles only to be slightly bewildered when the waffle arrived cold with a single chicken thigh less than the size of a pack of cards--and the sunny side egg was fully cooked through, not runny. My husband had ordered this before and it came with substantially more chicken befitting the price--we mentioned this to the server who apologized and said more was coming, and eventually...an even tinier piece came out by itself 20 minutes later (maybe the size of a credit card, literally, and after we'd finished). Very bizarre. I am guessing they ran out of an ingredient or something, but better to take it off the menu rather than try to rip off the customers.
