I hope they put the smoked salmon omelet back on the brunch menu, because that was great. The beer selection is always good. And there is always a place to sit. Cons: the rest of the menu. A few times, I have come here outside of brunch hours, and I will not do it again. Once I got to the "das boot" pork loin, which appears to be a frozen pork patty that they heated in the oven. Once I got the smoked chicken, which is okay for $9. Twice, I ordered the charcuterie board. The first time, the board was a reasonable selection of cured meats, cheese, pickles, bread, jam, and mustard. The second time (today), it was just some sandwich meat (salami and ham), hard bread, and some jam and mustard (no cheese, no pickles, no cured meats). Really? $14 for maybe $3 of food? And for a board of food that doesn't even include the items described on the menu (cured meat and pickles)? I'll continue to come for brunch, but I've given up on the rest of the menu. read more

Fun beer hall near downtown Charlottesville. Massive indoor space great for groups and gatherings, with long wooden tables but also medium sized booths. The outdoor space is the true treasure--check out bocce balls, play jenga, or simply enjoy the sun! Despite being close to UVA, it does not seem like a college bar. Also, the kitchen makes great food--the fries are delicious and come with homemade dipping sauces. Definitely worth a visit. read more

I haven't eaten here, I've only drank, but the beer is good and there are several options. It's a great space for a big group. The tables are long, although it does get crowded. The outdoor area is spacious and awesome if it's warm enough. You can reserve the private back room for a fee, or reserve the front tables for no fee. Pros: Great beer selection, beautiful patio, friendly, helpful staff, background music is low enough on the patio to have an enjoyable conversation. Cons: Ordering process was confusing, we were underwhelmed by the food. A friend and I went here for the first time tonight looking for a good beer and some tasty food. We walked through the front door and immediately liked the casual ambiance and soft lighting and that we were greeted with "Hello's" by smiling employees. It is much bigger inside than it appears from the outside. After mentioning it was our first visit, we were led to a counter in the back with a large menu board where you place your order. I would recommend looking at the paper menu instead though because there are things on there not on the board, like the option to order a gluten-free bun for example. After you order, a server will then bring your food to wherever you decide to sit. They have a great draft beer selection of about 30 different beers. I told our server at the counter that I knew what food I wanted but that I wasn't sure what beer I wanted so he suggested I go over to the bar area to taste a couple of beers to help me decide and then come back and place my food & beer order together. My friend knew what she wanted so she went ahead and ordered. For some reason the server put her order on my tab and then put in my food order before I even had a chance to go to the bar. He said he didn't want to hold up the line. Instead, he could have just put her order in separately and say to me, "Do you mind if I take the order of the people behind you while you go decide on what beer you would like?" I would have had no problem with that. I ended up finding a beer I liked and the bartender at the bar added my drink order to my tab. This made me wonder why our original server didn't just say, "Okay, I'll put your food order in here and then you can just go have your beer added to your tab at the bar." Confusing all around. The bartenders were very friendly and helpful in helping me select a beer I liked. We sat outside on the beautiful large patio. It was adorned with trees and picnic table style seating. A food runner brought out our Portobello Burger and Salmon Salad. The flavor of the Portobello sandwich was good but there was way too much bun compared to mushroom. We both felt that the Portobello cap should have been much bigger. The salmon salad was not what we expected. We liked the dressing and addition of cannellini beans but the salmon had a chewy, fishy, flavor and was cut into such small strips, we weren't sure visually if we were biting into tomato, onion or salmon each time we took a bite. This was our fault though because we didn't notice the word "cured" in the description. All we heard was the server say how good the "salmon salad" was. Even if we had anticipated the preparation style of the salmon though, there wasn't nearly the equivalent of a decent portion. This place is definitely kid friendly. There were kids running around the patio during our visit. They have a whole stack by the front door of fun games for kids and adults alike. There are also two cement areas to play bocce ball. Kardinal hall is a wonderfully open, german-style beer hall. A large venue, it offers a variety of seating options both in doors and outside. It also has a pretty substantial menu to choose from. The food can be hit or miss but when it hits it hits great. I recommend the brats (don't recommend the schnitzel). There is a great rotating beer selection. Their octoberfest selection in is particularly good. With their big patio they are also a dog friendly establishment. Great for hosting parties and office events. Check it out! read more

Kardinal Hall Sunday brunch following a wonderful weekend of graduation activity was a smart decision. Socially-distanced and masked to order indoors, then sitting at the spacious picnic tables gave no anxiety during the confusing vague pandemic mandate relaxations. Chorizo omelet and biscuits and gravy were our menu choices, and I cannot imagine which other items could be better. The biscuits were excellent - large and flaky, and the gravy was one of the best I have ever eaten - chock full of sausage, and tasty base. Chorizo omelet delicious, but the main diner is off in the wild so I cannot say more. I need to find a reason to get back to Charlottesville to order more from Kardinal Hall. read more

I feel like I've been to Kardinal Hall a million times in the past few months. It seems to be everyone's ideal spot for a large group hang out, a casual night for board games, or a meal with something for everyone. I can't say that German food is my usual go-to, but there are plenty of non-sausage options for someone like me. I've enjoyed most of the appetizers I've tried, particularly the fries, but one gripe I have is the lack of beer cheese. This seems like a no-brainer for a German beer hall that proclaims you can add toppings to anything, but maybe it's not authentic? I appreciate their wide selection of alcohol, especially cider, and that they'll let you try samples of what's on tap before you make up your mind. Ordering can get a little confusing, since the expectation is that you order from the bar but then eventually a waiter/waitress does show up to your table. I learned to play Chickapig from an employee and have since enjoyed teaching others. Tuesday is officially Chickapig night, but really, you can play anytime you want. The service is always great. The outdoor patio is really spacious and is definitely the place to be when the weather is nice. There's also a back room inside that's a little quieter if that's your thing. read more

What an awesome place! So much room, lots of activities, cool staff, yummy food and drinks...what's not to love? I've been to Kardinal Hall in a few different contexts now--meeting up with friends for dinner and boardgames inside, meeting up with people for a beer on the patio in the summer, coming early on a Saturday (10am) to watch some English Premier League games before brunching on Belgian fries and sausages...and it's always been fun! Pro-tip: even if they open at 10am for EPL (which is awesome--they actually have all the games playing at once on different screens) their kitchen doesn't open until 11am. But the bar is open! It's a really great space for hanging out in any of those circumstances. Everything I've tried is delicious (the fries topped with garlic aioli are particularly awesome), and the staff is so friendly and accommodating. Also, their hashtag of choice is #takemetoyourliter. (In case that doesn't make it clear, they offer a liter of beer as a serving option.) How cool are they?? So cool. read more

I finally tried Kardinal Hall last weekend with a group of friends. It was a super-fun German Beer Hall style atmosphere with great (and unique) beer choices. I tried whatever German Lager was on tap and loved it. I also loved the traditional Bratwurst, and others in my group tried the other sausage options- none were disappointed. I give this place five stars because the prices are right, the beers are delicious (and unique) and the atmosphere is great for a fun night out with a group (or even just for a couple). There is bocce ball, too, if you enjoy that! They've done a great job at making this place a fun, relaxed and unique place to be. This place is cool. Art Deco 30's construction. Nice outdoor seating. Nice indoor venue. Good atmosphere. The line for food, the wait for food SUCKS! This place is new and obviously going through some growing pains, but they need to fix the food line quick or it will DIE. You stand in line for30 minutes to place an order. Suggestion: pare down the menu and drink selection to something you can handle. I see about 15 staff working their asses off and getting nothing done. A German beer hall has about 3 beers in the menu and about 8 entrees. Simplify and do it well. read more

Great spot that I think will be a really good time once the initial rush has worked itself out. This is going to be a great place to add to the Friday night crawl. Really good food if you are into as proper German beer food, and a good selection of beers. I will be doing much quaffing here in future. I love the fact that you go up and order at the bar and food counter and don't have to wait 30 mins to get your bill as everything is already paid up. Only problem is I kept getting hit my ping pong balls. A great idea in theory, but I would loose the ping pong table and get a couple more long benches. I've always had a pretty good experience here! Usually the staff are extremely friendly, the food is great, and the beer selection is fantastic and fairly priced. Tonight however we had a group tonight that stayed until about five minutes until close, finishing our beers. With multiple tables still left inside, one of the staff come up to us and rudely demand that we finish our beers while he's at the table. When my boyfriend says that he's not done, the waiter says "oh it's time to be done. You don't have to finish it" with multiple large parties that still have half a liter left to go. Kardinal Hall is a modern take on the classic German beer hall & garden, so with that being said it's definitely a different style than a lot of the restaurants here in town--which is awesome! They have a great selection of beers & wines, and the food is delicious without being overly pretentious. They have offerings of German food, but they're not limited to that style only and often have all kinds of killer items from steak salad to smoked chicken to mussels on the specials menu. You can enjoy a stein of beer & a spicy brat with lots of toppings while you play ping-pong inside, or sitting out on the patio--a huge space with cool string lights & two bocce courts! It can definitely get a little noisy inside on the weekends when it's busy, but that's what you expect from a beer hall! People having a fun time & putting off great energy! How it differs from other restaurants is the family-style of dining, and the way in which you order. Instead of having a server come to your table and take your order, you order at a food station, grab a number, and they'll come find you. I think this style is great for a beer hall because you can move around from table to table as you see people you know and you won't mess any of the staff up (you just have to bring your number). Okay, let's try this again. I was super excited to try Kardinal Hall and maybe judged it a little too harshly when it was in its infancy. Since my first review of my two earliest visits, I'm now singing a different tune about Kardinal Hall. I have been back several times since then, and each time have been more impressed than the last. Their kitchen puts out some great options that are above your standard pub fare. My favorite starters are the pretzel--don't skip the obatzda--and the poutine. I also really liked the mussels that were on special one night. For my mains, I really like the das boot and the quinoa/bean burger. I was surprised by how good the quinoa/bean burger was! The food service has significantly improved from the few times I visited. Sometimes, my food has even arrived at the table before I've returned with a beer. They always have several regular options on tap, and lots of local brews that rotate. I love that you can get liters of great German beer! one thing that could be improved upon is the wait time for drinks at the bar. It seems like they could use another bartender because usually there are only two pouring drinks. Also, I have been standing up at the bar several times, and other customers that have just walked up have been served before me, which shouldn't happen with experienced bartenders. Now with the warmer months approaching, seating is never an issue. There is tons of space inside and even double that with the outdoor space. I've almost always been able to snag a table outside even when it is really crowded due to beautiful weather. read more

I also have to make a plug for their garlic fries - literally piled on with chunks of garlic and it is amazing. They also have a more private room in the back that can be perfect for a smaller get together. Parking can get a little iffy on busy nights, but other than that, I have no complaints! read more

My experience here over time is well-modeled by an exp(1) distribution. The first time I went here, it was awesome. I got some sausages and an order of the poutine, and the food and drinks were so good. The second time, I also had a great time. The food wasn't quite as good, but they had some really cloudy IPA that hit the spot. They overcooked the fries and put too much garlic on them... OK whatever. The third time... Food and drinks were just average, but the waitress was super friendly and talked a lot about her experience working at some famous restaurant. The fourth and fifth time... the food sucked, it just wasn't good. They didn't have any good IPAs and the waitress was being a total jerk to people. Apparently they try to route people to some other counter to order food when it gets busy... no problem! The issue is she acted as if somehow we all should have just read her mind and known to go there, despite no signage or anything to let people know. I witnessed her act very rudely to multiple guests. Listen... we all have stressful jobs; you aren't special. Just be polite to people. We don't know the silly rules of your business. First off, If you're out of more than one beer on your big chalkboard beer list, update your big chalkboard beer list. The bar staff also very clearly favors large groups of girls over anyone else. It took 15 minutes of hand waving and two different bartenders to close my tab. Don't just stand there smiling at the girls in pretty dresses while they hem and haw over what they want to eat. Food looked good but we were discouraged from ordering from the absurdly long wait times advertised by the one bartender who actually paid us half a second of attention. I was so excited for Kardinal Hall to open since my husband and I are big fans of Beer Run. I will say that the first time I came a few months ago, I was underwhelmed. It might have just been working out the kinks. But this weekend we came back, and it was the perfect place to sit outside in the nice weather and relax with a drink. I got their Cab Sauv and thought it was great for the price, it was also a very heavy pour so one glass lasts you a while. My husband enjoys their large beer selection and it seems really reasonable priced. The system is that you walk up to the bar to order drinks and you can either order food there or at a separate stand in the back. You've given a number and the food is brought out to you when it's ready. I will say that sometimes the bar gets a bit backed up and it can take some time to order. We sat outside in the beer garden-style tables. There were a lot of people playing games and we were able to watch some bocce. It gets crowded but there seems to be enough space for everyone. We also ordered a pretzel with cheese and it was great. The pretzel was warm, tender, and really salty. The cheese was interesting in that it's cold and was an orange cheese with chunks of what almost tasted like a brie. It was definitely different and fun to try. This place is such a great concept. Went here on a Saturday night and it was pretty busy. They did forget to bring me my drink for a good ten minutes but brought my boyfriends within the first minute of sitting down. The poutine fries were not at all what we were imagining but more melted cheese on fries with little to no gravy.. pretty disappointing. Also we ordered wings and again they forgot. Their white bbq sauce tasted like watered down ranch.. again disappointing. I will say one of the workers, Laura, did an awesome job at bringing us exactly what we were missing and offered free drinks to make up for it. She was so incredibly nice and accommodating.
