The Kielbasa sausage with three pierogis is the ideal dish to order here, especially for those not all that familiar with Polish cuisine (like myself). The sausage is just smoky enough without it being too overwhelming, and the pierogi (get the raspberry and sweet cheese one to balance out your palette) are a great point/counterpoint to the meal. Afterwards, I debated between getting the waffle, or walking up the street and getting donuts at nearby Peter Pan. I decided on the former as I never met a waffle I did not like. This continues to be the case. The waffle is cake-like but not overly indulgent, and just the right size. Unfortunately the fruit is more on the tart side, but balances out the waffle well. Next time I will be better prepared. And oh yeah, I still made it out to Peter Pan and got my donuts afterwards.

We were the only people in the restaurant the entire time, though there were a few delivery orders. The restaurant has a homey interior, with callouts to their historic presence in Bay Ridge. We ordered the chicken klopsiki ($15.65) and the Hungarian pancakes ($20). Each dish comes with a house salad, which consists of red cabbage, sauerkraut, cole slaw, beets, shredded carrots, and lettuce. The salad had nice flavors and tasted fresh! I really enjoyed the chicken klopsiki, which is a chicken meatball. The meatball was moist, and the sauce had a nice flavor, like chicken soup. The only downside was that the mashed potatoes had no flavor and tasted like powdered mashed potatoes. I liked the flavor of the Hungarian pancakes, but the ratio of pancake to filling was heavily skewed toward the pancake, which was just fried potato with minimal flavor. Therefore, I would pass on the pancakes and just get the goulash if I decided to return. Service was okay. When I asked the server for recommendations, she wasn't enthusiastic, but I was asking generally, and I could have been more specific. She left during our meal, and we had to call someone to give us the check. So after giving us the food, service was nonexistent. Overall, I liked some parts of the dishes, but nothing was so amazing that I would be itching to return again!

Would it hold up, or was the disappointment inevitable? I'm happy to report that I've returned twice this year, and the white borscht is still as delicious as I remembered. It's warm, comforting, and a little tart, with slices of smoky, meaty kielbasa and hard-boiled eggs. You can get a 12-ounce "cup" or 16-ounce "bowl," and I like opting for the latter so I can bring the rest home and make it last a little longer. For other standouts on the menu, their fried cheese and potato pierogis are great, with a decent amount of filling and perfectly caramelized onions on top. The sour cream's a must, though I hate that it was an extra 75 cents. Their platters are also hearty and can easily be split into two portions. You can't go wrong with the flavorful Polish platter, which features stuffed cabbage, kielbasa, hot sauerkraut with meat (my mouth is watering just thinking about this), and three pierogis. My partner's enjoyed both the Hungarian-style potato pancake with beef goulash and the stuffed cabbage with mushroom sauce.

Once stepping into the store, you are met with large freezers and fridges stuffed to the brim with all things Ukrainian. Many of their dumpling items are in large packages (2-3lbs a pack) and range from $8-$15 per lb depending on the filling. $15 a pound for their lamb and short rib Pierogis. Price-wise, it's very fair! And you can taste to quality and heart they put into these Pierogis. Can't go wrong with any flavor. I got the lamb and it was stuffed with tender lamb pieces, no filler. And they make for great quick meals! I also snagged a box of cabbage rolls stuffed with a pork and rice filling. Simple home-y flavor and better than rolls I've gotten from restaurants. Just reheat and it's ready to go! $15 for 5 large cabbage rolls was a great deal as well! Would get again. Looking for a cozy and charming place to enjoy some delicious Polish cuisine and a great beer? Look no further than this lovely restaurant. With its old-timey interior and delicious traditional dishes, this place is sure to transport you to another era. The first thing you'll notice when you step inside is the charming decor. With its vintage wallpaper, wooden furnishings, and warm lighting, this restaurant has a cozy and welcoming atmosphere that's perfect for a night out with friends or family. And the beer! Oh, the beer! It comes in liters and even larger sizes, making it the perfect accompaniment to your meal. But the real star of the show here is the food. The traditional Polish dishes are simply delicious, with all the classic flavors and ingredients you'd expect. From pierogi to kielbasa to bigos, everything is expertly prepared and bursting with flavor. And if you're feeling particularly hungry, be sure to try the platter - it's a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. But perhaps the best thing about this restaurant is the friendly and attentive service. The staff is knowledgeable about the menu and happy to make recommendations, and they'll make sure you feel right at home from the moment you walk in the door. Overall, I can't recommend this place enough. Whether you're in the mood for a cozy night out or a big celebration with friends, this restaurant is the perfect spot. With its great beer, delicious traditional dishes, and charming atmosphere, it's sure to become a new favorite. read more

Cozy Ambiance but Long Waits at Karczma, Brooklyn I recently dined at Karczma, a charming Polish restaurant in Brooklyn, and had a mixed experience. The highlight of my meal was undoubtedly the schabowy cutlet, served with beets and mashed potatoes, which was absolutely delicious. However, the chicken soup I started with, while flavorful, was served barely warm instead of hot, which was a bit disappointing given the otherwise authentic presentation. The decor of the restaurant is authentically Polish, contributing to a cozy and inviting atmosphere that makes you feel like you're dining in a rustic inn in Poland. This tilt towards traditional plates and settings was greatly appreciated and added to the authenticity of the experience. However, the wait times at Karczma were a significant downside. For such a lovely establishment, the long waits were quite a turnoff, especially for someone in a rush. It seemed that the kitchen and staff were not prepared for the volume of patrons, which could be frustrating for guests expecting a quicker dining experience. Overall, while the food was delightful and the ambiance was spot on, the issues with the soup temperature and the long wait times might make me think twice if I'm on a tight schedule. For those who aren't in a hurry and want to savor traditional Polish cuisine, Karczma is certainly worth a visit. read more

Karczma, a cozy Polish spot in Greenpoint, is the kind of restaurant that makes you feel right at home the second you walk in. The warm, rustic décor, complete with wooden tables and old-world accents, sets a relaxed, family-style vibe that's perfect for gathering with friends or loved ones. The food? Absolutely incredible. Everything we tried was hearty, flavorful, and felt like it was made with love. The pierogi were soft, perfectly stuffed, and just the right amount of buttery. The kielbasa was smoky and delicious, and the bigos (Polish hunter's stew) was rich and satisfying. Even the simple sides, like the potato pancakes and beet salad, were spot-on. It's the kind of meal that leaves you full and happy but still dreaming about what you'll try next time. The service matched the vibe--warm, friendly, and attentive without rushing you. It felt like they genuinely wanted you to relax and enjoy your time there, which made the experience even better. Karczma nails that family-style atmosphere where you can laugh over shared plates and feel totally comfortable. Pair that with comforting, authentic Polish dishes, and it's a place you'll want to visit again and again. Whether you're in the mood for a casual dinner or introducing someone to Polish cuisine, Karczma is a spot that doesn't disappoint. read more

Just saw how many great reviews this place has gotten so Im not sure I have much to add to what has already been said. Bottom line, Karczma is a real gem of a restaurant. The place is unpretentious and real but, at the same time, the space is large, the ceilings are high, the seating comfortable and the lighting is just right. But it is the reserved, but friendly, waitresses and the incredible food that make an evening at Karczma a real treat. One of my favorite dishes is their white borscht soup (served in a bread bowl in the evenings). We also love their Beef Goulash, served with potatoe pancakes, but even their simple breaded cutlets are phenomenal - especially when eaten alongside their famous sauerkraut. But all that aside, what is truly astounding about places like Karczma is how they are able to offer SO much for the prices that they charge. You can go to McDonalds just up the block and probably pay about as much as you would at Karzczma. If you are looking for a restaurant that is unique, affordable and totally enjoyable, I strongly recommend an evening at Karczma. You will not be disappointed! read more

Me and my boyfriend decided to go to Karczma for dinner! We have dined there many of times, but tonight was probably our worst experience! We were seated quickly, and our server promptly took our order, but the rest of the service went down hill! The next two times we saw our server was when she brought our meals, and when we asked for the bill! Maybe she had a bad day, but we expected better! And the funniest part was when we told her what we wanted wrapped to go, we were brought to go boxes for us to pack! Unbelievable! Anyway, food is good, but service needs improvement! P.S- we are both in the business; me being a bartender, and my boyfriend working as a manager of a restaurant! Maybe next time! read more

My Polish co-worker suggested to go to this restaurant for last year's company holiday dinner, and we all loved the food. The waitresses are all very friendly and they have a great beer selection. My favorite things on the menu are white borscht soup and steak tartar. Everything is really fresh and authentic. Since the holiday dinner, I have gone back there a few times with my friends. For the quality of food, it's really inexpensive too. When two of my friends and I went there recently, we had more food than we could eat, some beer, and a bottle of wine, and we each paid about $30. You can't beat that. read more
