Everyone loves a great restaurant success story…read more Someone takes a risk, opens a place, brings a point of view to the kitchen, and creates something people can't get anywhere else. MOQA is not currently that story. MOQA is what happens when a perfectly attractive café looks at the most generic corners of American brunch culture and says, "Yes, but what if we made this slightly more confusing?" The place itself is excellent-looking. Clean, modern, bright, polished. The room has energy, the clientele is stylish, and there is absolutely no shortage of people who appear to have made considerably better wardrobe decisions than I did that morning. Then the food arrives and the whole operation drives directly into a ditch. The breakfast sausage is basically a hot dog. I need to repeat that because my brain rejected it the first time. A hot dog. At breakfast. Sitting next to eggs like it has legitimate credentials. This is not innovation. This is witness protection for processed meat. Then there are the waffles, which seem to have emerged from an extended research program into how many ways one can misunderstand a waffle. A waffle is not complicated. Crisp exterior. Soft interior. Butter. Syrup. Civilization solved this problem a long time ago. MOQA has apparently appealed the ruling. The waffles are texturally confused, structurally uncertain, and generally give the impression that they are still deciding whether they want to remain waffles. And that is the larger issue with the menu: it has no clear point of view. MOQA feels like a restaurant with access to a far more interesting culinary identity that has instead decided to chase the same vague upscale-brunch aesthetic already multiplying across the suburbs like luxury apartment buildings. That is the real tragedy here. I don't need another place trying to reinvent eggs, waffles, and sausage for people carrying laptops and stainless-steel water bottles. Give me something distinctive. Give me breakfast with history. Give me strong flavors, unfamiliar dishes, interesting breads, meats, teas, sauces, spices--anything that makes me think, "I could not have gotten this at thirty other brunch places." Give me a reason for MOQA to exist beyond nice furniture. Because the frustrating part is that the foundation is already there. The space is attractive. The service is pleasant. The atmosphere works. People clearly want to be there. The kitchen simply needs to stop treating American brunch conventions like sacred scripture. 0 stars for the food. 1 stars for the potential. And one sincere request from a man who never wants to see another breakfast hot dog: Please develop an identity, fix the waffles, and make something memorable.

This came up in a search for vegetarian-friendly restaurants, which it's definitely not. However, I…read morelove housemade noodles and I've never had Uyghur cuisine, so off I went. They have half a dozen vegetarian salad options, only one of which features noodles (a cold noodle dish I might try later). ALso naan and a fried bread option. Zero vegetarian entrees, and sadly no vegetarian dumplings. However one of the two noodle main dishes, the Qorima Lagnam, can be made without meat, so I got that. Drinks and dessert are not shown on the menu; they have kompot, which is a delightful homemade fruit / sugar drink (I got the raspberry - delicious, and they just bring you a pitcher!), and a variety of fancy cakes. The noodles were very tasty, with a variety of vegetables, thick noddles with the right amount of chew, and an oily mild-ish tomato-type sauce (hot sauce available on your table). Serves one with enough for a snack later. The cakes are clearly from an outside bakery, but if you want a multi-layered honey cake or one of those candy-coated small cakes with styled to look like a giant piece of marzipan fruit (I had the blueberry), they got you. Service was friendly, though I think they changed shifts partway through (the second waiter was happy to sell me dessert), and the place is small but fairly spacious. Music videos from someone's early 2000s Spotify feed played on a TV over the counter. So while a vegetarian's choices are limited, I'd say it's worth a stop, particularly if you love noodles.

5 stars for the new Taste of Kalavara Indian restaurant!…read more This is a new restaurant that is also owned by the Indian grocery store owners next door. I got to try the Paneer Tikka Masala which came with a complimentary side of rice - it was delicious! There was so much flavor and the spice level was perfect - fresh and made to order. I'll start with the two minor nitpicks I encountered, but neither was any reason to take a star…read more One was the cocktail piano music (at home in an elevator), the other is the QR code menu (fortunately they have a printed one in the window, so I could see what the food looks like). The place is spotless and spartan. The two young men working the front are both Uyghur Americans, with perfect unaccented english, a big plus in ethinc dining for us! Food arrived promptly, both dishes at the same time. On to the food. I had Uyghur Laghman, the #1 iconic Uyghur dish. Simply prepared with bell peppers, a bit of scallion, thin-sliced marinated beef (tender. think Korean Chap Chae style) and traditional hand-pulled noodles, like a thicker spaghetti, and all of 39" long! Al dente perfection. Lisa had Osh Uyghur, a rice pilaf style dish with shredded beef. she loved it and we took some home. The food is down-home cooking, not high concept, but well executed. And Concept is nothing without execution. We'll be back real soon!

First time trying the Nomads restaurant. Was not too busy on a Saturday night, though they did…read morehave several tables reserved when we got there. No wait to get a table for us fortunately. There was a UFC fight night apparently so that was playing on a projection on a wall. Made for good dining entertainment while we waited for our food. The restaurant is gorgeous, decorated with what looks like articficle wheat stalks. I really wanted to try several dishes but it was just my family. We ordered the giant meat platter which was fantastic variety. A good choice in my book, we came away with leftovers as my eyes are bigger than my stomach. Thought overall it was decent value. It originally started bc I saw they had lamb chops, but I wanted more than just an entree worth of lamb chops...so before you know it I am starting a ribeye, chicken wings, fries, grilled vegetables, cheese filled burger patties, wok seared noodles, dumplings. And then my eyes peered at the other tables and their dishes, everyone had a pillowy fried dough bite dipped in cream. Oh yes. Get me some of that tooo. Yeah do good meal, great if I brought maybe another 6 persons to take it down. But we enjoyed the leftovers and the memories the next day. Yum. Loved it.

The menu mostly has Uzbek dishes with a few random items. One of the dishes we wanted which had steak, chicken and salmon was unavailable because the grill wasn't working, so we got our usual Uzbek dishes that we've had at several other restaurants: plov and boso lagman. The plov was pretty good. Decent amount of meat and the rice was cooked perfectly. However, the meat was more dry than other places because it was less fatty. It was tender, though. The boso lagman was excellent. Very flavorful broth, and the noodles were cooked perfectly. Most places go too al dente with their rice and noodles. Good meat and veggies, too. Service was friendly and pricing was fair.

The chicken was grinned nicely and the buns were steamed soft. I could eat a ton of these. For my meal, I got hot shrimp box which is spicy buttery garlic shrimp over white rice. I wish it was a bit spicier but the sauce was good and flowed into the rice.
