Well usually I pass by on the weeknights since I'm close to Sophia grill but I really had a craving for a Bulgarian cuisine so after selling or donating plasma blood and being done by 12:00 I had to drive all the way from Chicago to here in Des plaines. Very busy and I'm glad they're open on Saturdays. Service was decently good but you have to remember with Eastern European restaurants you have to get the water ahead since they don't give you free tap water. Why I'm writing this review now is because I finally tried the tartar meatball plate and it was very delicious it's a very big patty with cheese inside and to stay healthy I went for the traditional shopka salad with cheese cucumbers, Bell peppers and tomatoes. I also was that hungry that I ordered their Bulgarian type soup which I've had before but I'm starting to like this a lot more than the cucumber Dill soup that they serve in the summertime even though it's that season. Do try it with the garlic peppercorn and lint vinegar. I finished off my dessert with the biscuit cake bread that they make in-house. Unlike some restaurants this is more of like a informal hole in the wall fast food. Otherwise really happy I went over here versus polish cuisine which was the other choice

Grilled chicken thigh with potato salad

I ordered the side of potato salad with chicken thighs. It was fillet instead of bone in, which made me unhappy. The chicken thigh was seasoned and had grill marks to give it a visually appealing appearance. Every bite of the thigh was tasty, and the quantity size was appropriate. The potato salad is distinct; it tastes strongly of dill and has a smooth, mashed potato-like texture. The biscuit cake, which included layers of vanilla custard, biscuit/cookie, and crushed nuts on top, was phenomenal. I like how smooth and creamy the custard was, and I'm glad it wasn't overly sugary.

I'd never actually had Bulgarian food before so this was a new experience for me. Let me tell you, I couldn't believe how good it was. I've had a few things from here but the top 2 without a doubt are the Shopska salad and the Beef patty. The salad is light and refreshing and the beef patty is full of punch! What seasoning they use for it I have no idea - but it's outstanding! The portions are decent, and I've never eaten inside, only had take out so far, but I'll be coming back for more.

Menu is small but food was great! Fresh ingredients and friendly service too! Place your order at the counter. Open seating. Ventilation could be better due to the grilling. Definitely worth trying!

As a typical ignorant American, I had never had any Bulgarian Cuisine prior to visiting Sofia Grill. With no idea what to expect, to say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement! The food was phenomenally seasoned and grilled to perfection. With a large variety of meats, salads and soups, Sofia Grill has options for everyone to get a glimpse into the Bulgarian culture. A quaint environment with a view right to where the magic happens is a great atmosphere to enjoy your Bulgarian feast. And there is even a snack station for the kiddos to try some authentic Bulgarian sweets, candy, and chocolate. Since it was my introduction to the cuisine, I tried to order as much as I possibly could; we tried the Kebapcheta sausages, the Pork Chop, the Sofia Salad, the Roasted Pepper Salad, but the one that deserves first prize was the Tatar Meatball! This large patty-like meatball was dutifully flavored and served piping hot with a delicious mozzarella suprise inside. I just couldn't save some of it for later and ate the whole thing! And to complete this grand feast was the decadent HOMEMADE Biscuit Cake. Creamy marscapone layered between sweet biscuits, topped with walnuts and drizzled with caramel. This delicious dessert hit the spot and was gone within seconds!! Unfortunately I was too enamored with the food to even stop and take pictures before I wolfed it all down... Whether you are a Des Plaines local, an out-of-town tourist, or a food aficionado, you MUST stop at Sofia Grill for a window into the flavorful spices and delicious desserts of Bulgaria!

Chicken thighs and shopska salad (mixed)

Sofia Grill is a small hidden gem in the burbs. The food is delicious, made to order, and simply flavored. It also makes the best chicken thighs (flattened & grilled!) I've ever eaten. Alexander greets you with a charming smile, and the small kitchen does their magic. Shopska salad is a fresh favorite, so are the hearty delicious soups they have on special rotations. Don't miss the crusty fresh baked loaf of bread! The condiment tray has the best imported season salt to shake on your foods, and a variety of oil and vinegars to customize your salads or veggies. Portions are generous. They do a lot of carryouts, and also cater events. Who knew Bulgarian food was so delicious?! It's one of our faves, and I try to visit frequently and you should, too!

This place has amazing food and I cannot recommend it enough. Reopened recently with new owners and staff and a friend took me there! Absolutely hits it out of the park! The meat is so tender and well seasoned you don't need salt, pepper, or any modifications! Fries are delicious, sides are delicious and everything is homemade so you can feel good about eating it! I will probably end up going every two weeks at least because I've craving it! Going this Friday!

I seen this new place open up. I thought I would give it a try. I never tried Bulgarian food, there's always a first for everything! I had a sampler plate with all different meats! From sausages to pork chops and chicken! All were sooooooo good!!!! So very juicy! I loved their Sofia patty. So tasty! The owner of the place was super friendly and helpful! I also ate some of their desserts and had to take some home with me. I definitely would go again!! Absolutely loved this little gem!! Enjoyed time out with my friends as well! Best day ever!

Very good food!!!!! Delicious dishes, beautiful presentation and wonderful dessert. I recommend to everyone! I would like to come back here again and again.

I absolutely love octopus and figured I couldn't go wrong with it, but unfortunately, even that didn't compare to other places I've had it. That said, everything else is perfect. We did family style and shared everything. Prices were fair. Overall 4.5. -beef tongue 5 - kind of expensive but worth it. One of the best appetizers to get. Tons of flavor and very little chewing. -cheese bites mix 5 -feta and mozzarella cheese. The mozzarella sticks look different from your average American version. The cheese pull is not as stretchy but it's still well made. -seafood mix 5 - very fresh seafood. Perfect if you want to try a variety. The seafood is tender and moist. -Balkan style meats 4 - I love Balkan meats but the pork chop was painfully dry. The other meats were moist and robust. -lamb chops 5 - lamb chops cooked beautifully medium. Use the sauce provided. The rice was also very good. -skirt steak 5 - very tasty meat. It wasn't dry, cooked medium. Risotto was delicious. -garash cake 5 - The cake was light, not super rich. It's very good. -creme brûlée 5 - very creamy version of the creme brûlée. I never had one this creamy before.

However, as…read morethe day approached, the weather forecast consistently called for thunderstorms, heavy rain, and possible flash flooding. We decided it was not a good idea to drive to an unfamiliar area in inclement weather and canceled the reservation on Friday night. We were fortunate that Social Inn is close by and is a great restaurant for celebratory dining. Best of all, they still had reservation available. As it turned out, it was just light rain the entire evening on Father's Day, but we didn't regret the change at all. Although the restaurant was not filled to capacity, it was bustling with many families celebrating Father's Day, creating a festive vibe. It's the first time that we met the owner, Daniella, who's so warm and welcoming. She invited us to choose from available tables in three different dining areas. We selected the table right by the lounge that had a large TV, homey décor, couch and cocktail table. It was also right by the big window overlooking the small and charming front patio. Our server, Chis, was very friendly, pleasant, and attentive. I ordered a Lemonade ($3), my husband and daughter each enjoyed a glass of Mer Soliel Reserve Chardonnay (2 for $26). We shared a Grilled Octopus ($22) which was cooked to perfection. The warm, lightly charred pita points paired well with the creamy and tasty beet hummus. I had a Slow Roasted Lamb Shank ($39) which was tender and full of flavors. It was a very generous portion that I shared a big piece with my husband; and still had leftovers to take home. It made a delicious lamb sandwich for my next lunch. My husband liked his Spiked White Fish ($29) so much last time that he ordered it again. Our daughter enjoyed her order of Rigatoni Sausage ($23), another generously portioned dish that she couldn't quite finish. By the end of the meal, we were too full for individual desserts, so we shared a Crème Brûlée ($8), which was the perfect sweet ending. All in all, it was a wonderful dinner. With consistent delicious dishes, warm hospitality, comfortable seating, and a convenient location, we will definitely be back again.

In short, the food was fantastic but we felt like second class citizens in a first class restaurant. Atmosphere, was interesting. The first floor looked quite cool with dark lighting with blue undertones and an interestingly homey yet upscale space. I've never seen anything quite like it. But we didn't sit on the first floor. We sat on the second floor in the back near the staff service area and bathroom. So there were people constantly going back and forth, it was occasionally loud and I had to stare at EXIT signs all dinner. The table was also large and metal, which I'm sure is intentional for some reason, but it felt cold and uninviting. Note it's normal for typical restaurants to have good seats and bad seats. But at a great restaurant, there are no bad seats. And I was surprised to get one at a 2 Michelin star restaurant. Service / staff was very nice and even accommodated an unusual request on my part, which I really appreciated. While our main server who brought most of our food was sharp. It was clear that others were new. They'd talk low where you can't hear them or were clearly still "memorizing their lines." I totally understand that people have to practice to be good. But I've never been to a restaurant where I can visibly tell the staff in training versus the experienced team. Now the food. The food was INCREDIBLE. Every dish had an innovative twist in a way you've never had before. All the platings were creative and made you engage with the course in a different way. The highlight was the desert. The way they prepared in on the table was special. It was delicious and I'm 90% sure the music in the room actually changed as they prepared it. If it didn't, it sure felt like it.
