It took me a year... but I finally got the courage to let a new stylist touch my hair since moving here to LA. I did a lot of research and had a couple of options, but chose Kalpana's Kapuree Salon based on location (10 minutes away from my place in WeHo), price (Groupon deal for $115: haircut and balayage) and seeing her raving reviews. I have absolutely no regrets! I swear, Kalpana reversed time and made me at least 5 years younger and gave me that extra " va va voom, she got money" look. She did such an amazing job getting my dark Asian hair to lift and toned to a more ashy/cool color ($40 extra for the toner, but so worth it). She also gave me a layered haircut which brought my limp dead hair back to life. I ended up paying $205 with tip because I loved it so much, but that price is still extremely reasonable compared to how crazy balayage prices can be for worse quality. Let's talk about how awesome Kalpana is. I went in with a Groupon for a full or ombre highlight coloring and cut, all for $99, which I got discounted at $79 (retails for ~$300 at her salon, so great deal even without the discount). I have done groupons for hair before and been disappointed, so I wasn't expecting much, and I decided to ask for something pretty straightforward and came prepared with a picture so there wouldn't be any confusion. She honestly went above and beyond my expectations, and I will definitely be coming back for everything I want done from now on. She is absolutely amazing. After I gave her a picture of the coloring I wanted and a loose idea of how much I wanted cut off, I let her take the reigns and make the little decisions (I ended up opting in for an extra $40 for toner, which I was fine with to not have orange hair), and it turned out excellent. I have super thick hair, which I don't trust to just anyone, so I really mean it when I say she did a great job and knew exactly how to handle my hair. And she is super nice to boot. She greeted me with a hug as soon as I met her, and answered all the questions I had about how the different processes worked and what I should be doing to take care of my hair, and I can tell she is very passionate about what she does. Short version: Went in for a trim and it turned out so badly I had to get my hair re-cut at a different salon. Long version: I bought a Groupon a few weeks ago and was excited because I enjoy trying out new hair stylists. I figured I'd check out Kalpana and if I liked her work I would visit her regularly. She was able to get me in at 11am on a Saturday on fairly short notice (a few days before) so that was nice. I had to wait about 15 minutes for her to finish up with another client, but that wasn't a big deal to me. When I sat in the chair I told her I just wanted a trim and I wanted to keep the length of my hair. I also said I'd like my layers added back in since they had mostly grown out, and I also needed my bangs trimmed. This is the regular cut I get whenever I see a new stylist, same instructions and everything, but Kalpana managed to give me the worst hair cut I've ever experienced. She asked if I wanted a blow out but I said no because I was going to the gym later that day. I have gone to other stylists and gotten my hair cut wet without a blow dry and it turned out fine, so I wasn't concerned. Kalpana showed me the portion she wanted to cut and I said that was fine because it looked to be about 2 inches. In actuality she took off about 4 inches. When I got home after my hair had air dried, I was looking in the mirror and it looked like one side was longer than the other. Just to be safe, I straightened it and it was indeed about an inch longer than the other side. My friend checked out the back and said it was pretty jacked up, so I texted Kalpana (after calling and leaving a message) explaining to her that the layers weren't blended and the haircut seemed uneven and asked if we could fix it. She texted me back a day and a half later saying "When can you come in? I'm unavailable Saturday". There wasn't an apology or anything, so I ended up deciding not to go back to her in fear that she would mess it up even more. I went to a different stylist who took pictures for me and said I should ask for a refund because it was so bad (see photo). I ended up texting Kalpana a photo of the haircut she gave me and told her I was really disappointed and I would ask for a refund, but I bought it through Groupon. Her response was "Good for you! Yeah ask Groupon for a refund." I though that response was rude and unprofessional, so I decided to leave a review warning others. I was surprised the whole situation went down like this because I had checked out her yelp reviews before buying the Groupon. After re-reading the reviews, I noticed most of the bad reviews have been customers who wanted a trim with layers and weren't getting anything added on top (highlights, blow outs, etc). This tells me Kalpana only cares about the customers who are getting hair cuts with added costs. I could have turned into a regular customer, but her lack of attention to detail and bad attitude turned me away forever. I would highly recommend new customers stay away. read more

I had such a great experience with Kapu last Friday. I work till 6pm every day and she was kind enough to accommodate my work schedule and penciled me in for a 7:30pm appointment on a Friday night. I felt bad that I failed to tell her my hair was super long, so as soon as I walked in, we both knew the appointment was going to last several hours. She was such a champ and we both left satisfied with the results. For months I thought my hair was unrepairable, but Kapu did a fabulous job bringing it back to life. hate leaving poor reviews, giving 2 only for the pleasant conversation. So, for one, I purchased a Groupon. Called / texted to make an appointment - only didn't get a response until days later to finally set it. Day of, she's late. Again, had sweet conversation and understood my hair is pretty long - so to touch up a balayage is a lot of work. Except she insisted I needed to rebleach it. Obviously I want to keep my hair as healthy as possible, but she's the expert so I trusted her. Btw charged me an extra $90 on top of the Groupon. I gave it a week, two weeks, and now nearing a month, assuming that the toner she had used has all washed out - my hair has never looked SO blotchy and uneven. It's the worst it's ever looked and all I wanted was a touch up. But what she did instead is comb through another layer of bleach that didn't level out evenly between my natural hair and the hair that was already bleached from a previous balayage. Hoping she'd fix it, I reach out for an appointment. Again, days to respond to my text before it got set. She asked to reschedule twice, so I just thought screw it - she'll probably only make my hair even worse. Clearly doesn't care about fixing her mess or about customer satisfaction...shmeh. read more

KAPU! She is an angel. our story is great. Seven years ago, my bushy eyebrows and I were walking down Melrose when I saw a place called "Thread." I had only heard of threading eyebrows before. It sounded painful and exotic. And I wanted to try it. When in Rome, I went in and met Kapu right away. I explained to her that although my eyebrows appear unruly, I do like that they are big and thick. And I knew one day, because I can predict the future, that thick/bushy eyebrows would be in style. Her and I immediately got along great. She said she totally understood what I meant by just cleaning up a little bit and not taking much off. I have trust issues with both my hair and my eyebrows, because I have gotten horrible services before. I trusted her. There is something about her calm, professional nature that made me feel at ease right away. Of course, threading will always feel a little bit painful, but it's quick and the results are great. Only takes about five minutes and it costs $15 cash. Make sure to tip your threader. I highly recommend her. She had moved on from Thread to her studio at her house. I followed her everywhere she went. She's been now at Salon Republic for a few years. It's very convenient, parking is validated as long as you are under an hour I think. Maybe it's two hours. I always enjoy going to that complex because there's a lot fun things to do. You can get a massage, go see a movie, go grocery shopping at Trader Joe's, get a spray tan and a protein shake at Body Factory...Etc. But those are just a few examples. I hope you enjoy Kapu. She is a darling and she has great services. She also does hair and she is amazing. I was sitting next to a client of hers who went from long brown hair to a short, platinum blonde Bob. I have sooo many positives to share! Kapuree is a salon inside of Salon republic; STE 3. 1. QUALITY QUALITY QUALITY. She is definitely celebrity level colorists and brows! AND the cut was fantastic; I'm just so happy about it! She is also super knowledgable about all hair and seems to genuinely have my hairs best interest in mind. I've had my hair colored ombre at three different salons and Kapu did the most thorough job of anywhere I've been. I asked for it to be subtle for work and she did exactly that-- it's professional and classy while still being fun. Kapu also cleaned up a dreadful cut that I got at another salon. I came home and my husband says to me: "You look really pretty!" On top of giving me a great cut and color, Kapu is also just a really cool person to talk to. I'll definitely be going back! GETTING THERE: Kapuree Salon is located in Salon Republic on the second floor of the mall at the southeast corner of Sunset and Crescent Heights. Kapu is a MASTER at natural, sunkissed highlights. I came in for ecaille highlights, cut and color and loved the results. The final color was so flattering and even though she lightened my hair, when I left it felt much healthier, not over-processed at all! The tone was perfect and so well-blended. She definitely understands the art of subtlety when it comes to hair. My hair was very damaged before I came in, but I wanted to keep the length so she expertly cut my layers, still managing to keep the length pretty long. She was also very sweet and lovely to talk to. Overall, I think she's phenomenal as a hair dresser, however I didn't give 5 stars because: 1 - my hair took 4.5 hours... which she explained was because my hair wasn't lifting properly since I've used box dyes in the past. So, I do appreciate that she wanted to make sure it was done correctly, but this seemed too long. 2 - When I've gotten highlights in the past, usually this includes the price of a toner, but this was an additional charge. If I'm not happy with it, she's not happy with it. First things first, PLEASE DO NOT COME TO THIS PLACE! When I came in, the lady asked me to blow dry my own hair because she was tired and had a long day. I understand she had pain in her hands but I, too, was tired from work. If I am paying for this service, I don't expect to help the person actually dye my hair. She had me help her fold and pass her the tin foil paper and I honestly just wanted to get my hair dyed (I had no idea I was going to be an assistant). Then, she started saying that my hair would probably not take in the brown coloring (started blaming my hair). I paid the extra $ to get the color I wanted and in the end, the work was AWFUL. It was the worse balayage I had ever seen. Multiple types of brown in my hair (dark, light, medium) and it just looked so bad. I was so embarrassed coming out of the salon that I just tied my hair up. I told her I liked it to spare her feeling but the next day I let her know that I didn't like it and asked if she could redo it. The day that I was supposed to come in to redye, I texted her asking if it was too soon to redye (it was only 4 or 5 days after the first dye). She didn't reply to any of my text and never even confirmed the appointment (unprofessional), so I asked if I could book an appointment in 2 weeks so that I wouldn't damage my hair (still no respond to that). The NEXT day, she text me and says that I am rude for not showing up to an appointment she never even confirmed. I got mean text from her and it's just not okay. I still asked her if she could please redo my hair and I have not gotten a response. PLEASE DO NOT COME HERE! There are a lot of other salons with really amazing people, I would HIGHLY suggest you don't come here. read more
